2 OLOS Service Program Our Catholic faith calls us to serve, to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world, offering works of mercy to our brothers and sisters within our homes, our parish, our community and our world. From volunteering on a summer mission trip, to learning about Catholic Social Teaching, to taking part in or chaperoning a one-day service event, to donating food for our students to prepare and serve at a local soup kitchen, OLOS offers various opportunities for YOU to use your gifts to bring Christ to others and to encounter Christ in the world. Three-Part Service Reflection Series Service Orientation Wednesday, September 28 or Sunday, October 2* in O Connell Hall, 7-8:30 p.m. Learn about each of the service opportunities offered at OLOS, why we as Catholics serve and what it means to bring God s mercy to the world. Mid-year Service Reflection Sunday, January 8 or Wednesday, January 11* in O Connell Hall, 7-8:30 p.m. Reflect on the acts of service you have done so far this year and learn about the intersection of service and social justice. End-year Service Reflection Sunday, May 21 or Wednesday, May 24* in O Connell Hall, 7-8:30 p.m. Conclude a year of service with reflection, prayer, and discussion about integrating the lessons learned through service into our everyday lives. *The same session will be held on both dates listed. Please consider donating items for this cause. We need: brown lunch bags, Ziploc baggies, bags of chips/pretzels/snacks, juice boxes/ bottles of water, pasta sauce, spaghetti, bottles of salad dressing and parmesan cheese, packaged (non-perishable) cookies, and boxed brownie mixes. Our expectation is that 70% or $6,700 will come from the weekly offertory. Parishioners contributed $3,390 (excluding weekly mail-in offerings) for the week ending September 4th. Youth Soccer Challenge Open to all children ages 9-14 All boys and girls ages 9-14 are invited to participate in Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge on September 25th at 12 PM at Friends Field, Foxboro, Ma. This competition consists of 15 penalty shots with points awarded to the different areas of the net. The winners of the Foxboro competition go on to compete in the district and then state levels. All participants will compete in their respective age divisions. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. 4 What s Happening at OLOS NEW Fall Mass Schedule The new Fall Mass schedule begins September 10th as follows: Saturday: 4:30 PM AND Sunday: 7:30 AM, 8:45 AM and 11 AM (EXCEPT for Sept 18th Mass at the Lake at 10:45 AM only) Mass at the Lake September 18th at 10:45 AM Coffee hours moving back to O Connell Hall Beginning September 11th Registration for Religious Education Classes NOW open You can now go to and register your child or children for Religious Education Classes which begin September 25th. You can also complete a form at Coffee Hours or by stopping by the Rectory Office. ECO-TIP OF THE WEEK: Coffee & Climate Climate change poses a serious threat to coffee production because coffee beans are only able to grow in very specific temperatures. Take steps to reduce your carbon footprint starting with your coffee cup! Invest in a reusable to-go mug for that morning cup. Many coffee shops and cafes will provide a discount for customers that use their own cup. Additionally, try not to use individually packaged sugar/creamers, toss coffee grounds in the compost or use the grounds as a fertilizer. Lastly, check you coffee product for its fairtrade certification mark; this indicates that the coffee was made under safe and fair working conditions. Let Father Pinto Paul, C.S.C., of Family Rosary, guide you through a short workshop. You will learn what type of parent you are, the role each member of the family fulfills, how that impacts the family and how to modify behaviors and interactions. Bring your children! We will have separate fun, faith-filled activities for children of all ages. This is the entirety of Chapter 15 of Luke s Gospel. It is known as the lost and found set of stories. Alcohol, Marijuana, Opioids, and Your Health Parents, youth over age 12 and community members are invited to this presentation by Dr Kevin P. Hill. Dr Hill is an addiction psychiatrist, Director of the Substance Abuse Consultation Service in McLean Hospital s Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. As we drove, we would look for landmarks along the way that would measure for us how much longer the trip would last. A shopping center, a hamburger stand, an old factory that once employed our great-grandfather became markers of time and distance. We looked for them every trip and tried to be the first to spot them. We knew how much further we had to go, and it kept us busy on a long drive. Every family has their own landmarks that measure their life together. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, weddings, funerals, baptisms, and special occasions remind us of what we have accomplished and what yet lies ahead. We need to celebrate these times. They strengthen the bonds of love, renew our sense of identity and offer a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. But life can have its speed bumps and people can drift apart. Don t give up. Reach out to those who have been alienated, or are hurting, or are disagreeable. Yes, it will be awkward and it will require some humility and apologizing and forgiving. But it is so worth it when we can make the trip together. Just try and welcome everyone to the family.
