2 Family is Where We Learn to be Christian Rev. Chip Hines Pastor I was reading the Pope s message for the 49 th annual World Communications Day that was just published on January 23 and it struck me that he took an interesting angle towards the subject. The Pope spoke about the family as the essential unit of communication. He writes, The experience of this relationship which precedes us enables the family to become the setting in which the most basic form of communication, which is prayer, is handed down. Interesting that he calls prayer the most basic form of communication, but when you really think about it, it makes sense. What s more basic than our relationship with our creator? What s more intimate than our time with God? The Pope is telling us that the family fosters this relationship, or it should. He goes on: When parents put their newborn children to sleep, they frequently entrust them to God, asking that he watch over them. When the children are a little older, parents help them to recite some simple prayers, thinking with affection of other people, such as grandparents, relatives, the sick and suffering, and all those in need of God s help. It was in our families that the majority of us learned the religious dimension of communication, which in the case of Christianity is permeated with love, the love that God bestows upon us and which we then offer to others. Powerful stuff. Parents, you are so instrumental in the religious training of your children, you pray for them, you teach them to pray and you show them that our God is the God of love. That s a heavy responsibility, if taken seriously, and I believe most parents who attend Mass and practice their faith do take it seriously. My friends, we cannot just pay lip service to the responsibility of teaching the faith in the home. You can see it very clearly if a family prays that prayer has an effect on us, so the Pope is telling us that this family prayer time is important. Build it up slowly and work with each child to their ability and you ll see a difference in the child as he or she grows up into a prayerful person. The Pope continues, More than anywhere else, the family is where we daily experience our own limits and those of others, the problems great and small entailed in living peacefully with others. A perfect family does not exist. We should not be fearful of imperfections, weakness or even conflict, but rather learn how to deal with them constructively. The family, where we keep loving one another despite our limits and sins, thus becomes a school of forgiveness. Communication can lead to conflict but the Pope says it can be a school of forgiveness. The family needs to be a place where we can talk about the things that bug us, the things that make us happy or sad. The family is where we have our first relationships with other human beings, and so it will happen that there will be disagreements and hurt feelings. How we deal with these disagreements and hurt feelings is dependent I believe on our dispositions. Are we disposed to forgive? Perhaps daily prayer will help us with this. I believe it does and it sounds like the Pope and I are in agreement on this point! Always good to agree with the Pope, right? Part of my job as pastor is to teach and preach and so while I cannot be at every single educational opportunity, I hope through these messages and my homilies that I teach fully the faith as the Church gives it to us and in a way that is both challenging and comforting. I guess it is my hope that we can all keep learning and growing in our faith, in our relationship with Jesus and I encourage you to always keep studying and praying!

4 Blessed Sacrament Parish Ten Diamond Street, Walpole, MA, BlessedSacramentWalpole.org Photo: UN Photo/Eskinder Debebe. Can you go hungry for 6 hours? The Middle School Youth Group on Saturday, February 7, noon 6pm, will participate in a Six-Hour Famine. They will play games, watch video clips, and do group activities to learn about hunger issues in the US and the world. Water and juice will be provided, but in a spirit of solidarity, they will refrain from eating for 6 hours to get a glimpse of what hunger feels like. Bring a friend and an item to donate to the Walpole Food Pantry! Questions? Contact Margaret at youthminister@blessedsacrament.org This Week: Second Collection This week s second collection will be the monthly Balance the Budget collection, typically held on the first Sunday of each month, and is used to do just that: balance our operating budget. The weekly collection has not kept up with skyrocketing expenses, especially insurance, salaries, and utilities, and so the monthly Balance the Budget collection helps to offset the deficit. Many thanks for your generosity! Photo: Winnifredxoxo/Flickr. Book Club: The Church of Mercy Blessed Sacrament Book Club meets next on Tuesday February 10 at 7:30 in the community room. The book selected for discussion is The Church of Mercy by Pope Francis. The Church of Mercy is a book for our time: the memorable message of love, mercy and compassion in the words of the man whose deeds incarnate these values in our time. Not only Catholics but every human being who values what is best in us will cherish this book. Newcomers are always welcome. Morning of Prayer We welcome back Sr. Nancy Sheridan on February 25 to lead us in a Morning of Prayer. Sr. Nancy s theme for the morning, Jesus Lenten Journey: A Change of Heart, is certainly very inviting and will allow the group to reflect on the person of Jesus. We will gather in the Community Room immediately following the 9am Mass on this day. Light refreshments will be served. 4

We are asked to remember in our prayers all our shut-ins, our unemployed, our sick, our grieving, and our own parish dead. Tower Renovation Update Many thanks to all of those parishioners who contributed to the With One Voice campaign. To date over $607,000 has been raised and pledged for this important project. The contractor for the project was Thompson Waterproofing, Inc. of Quincy. The original contract amount was $393,700 and the final cost of construction was $441, The difference was primarily related to some areas of the tower that had asbestos material and needed to be professionally remediated before that repointing work could take place. In addition, a change order was added to the project to re route some storm water drainage pipes in the tower. Some of the remaining funds raised by the campaign will be used to offset the cost of our engineering firm, Gale Associates, Inc. of Weymouth. Gale Associates worked closely with our contractor and the engineering consultant hired by the diocese to ensure that the project was completed professionally and to the specifications of the bid document. The campaign funds will also be used for much needed repairs to the parish organ. A new blower motor was installed this past fall which has resulted in an organ whose mechanicals is far quieter so we can appreciate its music more. Additional work to the console portion of the organ is in the planning stages. At the recommendation of our engineer and the engineer hired by the diocese for the project, we have held off on any cosmetic repairs in the chapel until this upcoming summer. It was recommended that we make sure that the project successfully reduced the water infiltration from the tower and allow any internal surfaces to completely dry out. We anticipate the chapel repairs beginning this summer. Many thanks again for the continued support and flexibility of the parishioners throughout this project. 5 Blessed Sacrament Parish

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word, Be thou ever with me, and I with thee Lord; Be thou my great Father, and I thy true son; Be thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight; Be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might; Be thou my soul s shelter, be thou my strong tower: O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power. Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise: Be thou mine inheritance now and always; Be thou and thou only the first in my heart; O Sovereign of Heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of Heaven, thou Heaven s bright sun, O grant me its joys after victory is won!; Great heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all. After a very busy Christmas Season, the Staff of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish wants to officially give Judy a warm welcome to our community. Please come to O Connell Hall for coffee and say hello to Judy. Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Brother Lawrence (in Practice of the Presence of God): The holiest, most common, most necessary practice in the spiritual life is the presence of God that is to take delight in and become accustomed to His divine company, speaking humbly and talking lovingly with Him at every moment, without rule or system and especially in times of temptation, suffering, spiritual aridity, disgust and even of unfaithfulness and sin. We must continually work hard so that each of our actions is a way of carrying on little conversations with God, not in any carefully prepared way but as it comes from the purity and simplicity of the heart. 7
