Traditionally, the older son typically had the status, privilege, blessing, right of inheritance. However, the second sons Abel, Isaac, Jacob, and the Prodigal Son were, in fact, favored by God. Birth order does not assure God s blessings; rather, fidelity to the way of righteousness and doing God s will does. The chief priests and elders of the people were like the firstborn; they were the chosen ones, the privileged ones. Jesus says two things to them. First he asks their opinion about two sons who respond in opposite ways to a command from their father. Then he tells them his judgment: they are being unfaithful to the way of righteousness and doing God s will. By contrast, the tax collectors and prostitutes heard the call to repentance, became faithful, and are now favored by God. Which son are we like? The firstborn? The faithful one? The Son? Jesus challenges us not to be like the chief priests and elders of the people in the gospel by merely paying lip service to doing the Father s will. Instead, we are to be among those who come to deeper belief in Jesus, change our way of living, walk the way of righteousness, and do the Father s will. What is Jesus saying to us? What are we saying in response? How are we saying it? What is Jesus judgment of us? 3 FAITH FORMATION And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it. Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them. This story from Mark s Gospel struck home for me. Two weeks ago our Faith Formation Ministry for our children began. It was a pleasure to see the number of families who brought their children to us, seeking to have them experience the joy of receiving their sacraments of Reconciliation, Holy Communion or Confirmation. The group of children we have seeking their sacraments or who just want to continue their faith journey ranges in age from 1st graders to high school juniors. That age span is greater than our current catechists can work with. We need your help! Will you consider donating 4 to 6 hours a month to help our young touch Jesus, and maybe in the process enrich your own journey? Pray on it. We will provide the support and materials you will need. If you are interested, please contact Deacon Rick at ext COME, FOLLOW ME PARISH DISCIPLESHIP RETREAT Next Saturday, October 7, 2017, is our first Parish Discipleship Retreat! We will gather from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the St. Patrick Large Hall. Lunch will be provided! BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Introduction to This Weekend s Readings 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time In today s gospel Jesus challenges us truly to do the Father s will by living the way of righteousness. As we prepare to celebrate this liturgy, let us beg God s mercy for the times when we have failed to live according to God s will... First Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-28 In this selection from Ezekiel the word of the Lord clearly calls the house of Israel to conversion of life. The consequences are life or death. In the gospel Jesus clearly calls us to make a choice: to choose life by taking up the way of righteousness and doing the Father s will. Second Reading: Philippians 2:1-11 Paul urges unity. The one thing we should think on is the unity that must be based on the Christian community s threefold experience with the Holy Trinity: Christ, God the Father s love, and the Spirit. His appeal to Christian humility is rooted in what appears to be an ancient Christian hymn. The hymn focuses on Jesus humility and self-offering that was demonstrated in His obedience unto death. Gospel Reading: Matthew 21:28-32 Jesus pointedly indicts the chief priests and elders of the people by equating them in this parable with the second son who does not do the father s will. Surprisingly, who does do the father s will are tax collectors and prostitutes. Their sinful lives indicated an initial no to God, but then they came to belief, changed their minds, and repented when they heard a call to the way of righteousness. Believing is not paying lip service to doing the Father s will. Believing is changing our way of living, walking the way of righteousness, and doing the Father s will. Believing is walking the walk with Jesus, even when that walk includes confrontation, suffering, and death. Truth be told, all of us are a little like both sons in the parable. Sometimes we hear and respond faithfully to God s will, but at other times our actions don t carry through what we hear and believe. The good news in this is that God does not change the divine mind about calling us to salvation. Whether we say yes or no to God s call, God does keep calling us. We are the ones who need a change of mind. We are the ones who must believe in God s offer of salvation and faithfully do God s will. Prayer Gracious God, you call us to be faithful in carrying out your divine will. Hear these our prayers that one day we might share in the fullness of Life you offer those who dwell in your kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Your Generosity to St. Patrick Church is Greatly Appreciated. The altar ministry and environment is a group which divides tasks to include preparation of linens, flowers, candles, banners and sanctuary and altar decorations in order to prepare the sanctuary for Mass. The Altar Ministry follows closely-written guidelines which structure our actions. We kindly ask that any changes or additions to the sanctuary or altar should be approved by Fr. Chris who works closely with the Altar Ministry. Get tickets at the door or by calling me, Nancy Koring at DO YOU HAVE YOUR FUTURE PRE- PLANNED? Choose How You Would Like Your Life Celebrated On 9-11 when the planes hit the Twin Towers, some of the people in the buildings had less than a minute before the towers collapsed. Most of them had 401k s and life insurance, but had any of them pre-planned their funeral Mass? In 2010 within 10 days of each other, my wife and I had to meet with two different mortuaries and crematory for two different family members. One was in Southern California and one in Chico, California. No pre-planning had been done. What readings do you want? What music would you like at your funeral Mass? On November 4, 2017, the Ministry of Mercy/Ministry of Consolation will be hosting a workshop on pre-planning your Celebration of Life along with other subjects such as: Following Our Faith Personalizing Your Funeral Mass Cremation and Myths About Grief/Helpful Tips on Grieving. These are just some of the topics that will be covered. Preregistration will be required. For questions contact Mark Frederick at jmarkk2@sbcglobal.net or Sharon Gerhart at smgerhart@gmail.com.
