1 Friday October 28, 2016 From the Student Minister s Desk The United Church is Changing! You ve heard people say, Church isn t what it used to be! or perhaps we used to have these pews filled what happened? Well, the United Church of Canada feels that it is time for us to stop looking back, and begin to look to the future. The General Council of the United Church knows that our society has changed: church is no longer an inherited priority from one generation to the next; the government no longer consults with church leaders over decisions; a Sabbath Sunday with no shopping or organized activities no longer exists. We can mope and whine about how things have changed or we can change too! And that s what the United Church of Canada is doing! Next year, all congregations will be voting on some important changes within the United Church foundational policies. We call these Remits. There are 5 key issues: 1. We are currently in a Four tier system: General Council, Conferences, Presbytery s, and Congregations. The proposal is to move to a Three Council model: National (in place of General Council, but will be called Denominational Council), Regional (in place of Conferences and Presbyteries, but far less of them), and Local (the congregations, which will instead be called Communities of Faiths.) A good link to understand this is : 2. The United Church will eliminate the Transfer and Settlement process, which means that all ministers (students and ordained) will be responsible to find their own churches, and churches will no longer be sent a minister. For more information and a discussion of the pros and cons: wondercafe2.ca/index.php?threads/remit-2-elimination-oftransfer-and-settlement.2334/ Cont d Friday October 28, 2016 Inside this issue: From the Student Minister s Desk Cont d New Announcements Knox United Church, Ayr Church office Tel: Secretary: admin@knoxuayr.com Student Minister: Gail Fricker Minister: Rev. 2 Friday October 28, 2016 Page 2 From the Student Minister s Desk - Cont d 3. A central denominational office will be set up to act as a professional organization and disciplinary office for ministers. For more information: 4. There will be a change in the way that the new model is funded, moving away from Conference and Presbytery assessments, and towards one General Council Assessment, that will be administered centrally. For more info: 5. There are currently various streams of ministry: Designated Lay, Ordained, Diaconal etc. The motion is that these will all be blended into One Order of Ministry. More info: These changes DO effect you at Knox United. Don t just sit back and let things happen find out about them before you vote! There will be a full day (9am- 5pm) information session for Waterloo Presbytery on Saturday November 19 th at Three Willows United in Guelph cost is $12 for lunch. Please call the church office at Knox before Nov 5 th if you wish to attend. We will also be holding an information session at Knox in the new year. Let s move forward to together! For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11). Peace Gail New Announcements The Upper Room Daily Devotionals for Nov./Dec. are now available in the Communications Nook, located on the right-hand side leading up the hallway to the Sanctuary. 3 Page 3 Friday October 28, 2016 THE COUNCIL CORNER For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. -Matthew 18:20 This past Friday night Kindred Spirits and friends had the pleasure of attending Footloose at the Dunfield Theatre. The outing was planned by Debbie Martsch. Many enjoyed a delicious meal at Café 13 before heading over to the theatre where we met up with the rest of our group. We had so much fun conversation during supper and the show was wonderful. A week before Bob and I joined with friends from Knox for the Progressive Dinner. What a great night. The food was scrumptious; the hospitality was top notch and the fellowship, priceless. We are blessed at Knox to have many opportunities to join with one another and share in fellowship that is incomparable. Many times the occasions are social events that allow us to get to know one another better. I find that even the times we are together for a cause; we find so much enjoyment in each other s company that it doesn t feel like work. There are many worthy events coming up in the next few months. Look for something that interests you and join in. Blessings, Glenyce Maus Chair, Knox Church Council

10 Operation Christmas Child Christmas is coming!! Maybe it is not quite on your radar yet as we haven t even celebrated Hallowe en but Knox Sunday school is getting into the spirit of giving and we hope you will too. On Sunday, November 13 th, the Sunday school children will be packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. This is an important international outreach which our congregation has supported for many years and helps spread the word of Jesus love in a very meaningful way. On the Samaritan s Purse website it states that Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God s love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Please take time to pick up a few items to add to the shoeboxes and bring them to the fellowship hall on November 13th or pack a shoebox or two yourself and we will make sure it gets headed on its way. If you would prefer to support this project monetarily, it takes $7 for each shoebox to be delivered to its final destination. For more information contact Heather Raby, or go to the Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child website. FILL YOUR SHOEBOX Fill your shoebox with a well-balanced variety of items from the following categories: School Supplies - Items such as pencils, pens, pencil crayons, note pads, and picture books Toys & Other Gifts - Items such as stuffed animals, small musical instruments, hair clips, toy jewelry, t-shirts, socks, and candy (loose, individually wrapped hard candy in a sealable bag) Hygiene Items - Please place soap in a sealable bag Personal Note - Include a personal note and/or a photo in your shoebox (not inside the donation envelope) DO NOT INCLUDE: Toothpaste (due to customs regulations) Food and any chewy, crumbly, or soft candy: Including gum (due to customs regulations) Used items (due to customs regulations) Playing cards (other card games such as UNO are allowed) Liquids or items that could leak, melt, freeze, or break - Shampoo, creams, lip balm, bath gels, mirrors, or glass, etc. (these can damage other items in the shoe box). Items that can scare or harm a child - War-related toys, knives, and toy guns, etc. Using a backpack instead of a shoe box is problematic because it creates unfair circumstances at distribution events. Backpacks can also cause problems when cartons are being packed, and when shipments are going through Customs. - See more at:

11 October is Peanut Butter and Jam Month! These often forgotten items are a necessity in every home. Please remember those less fortunate than you in your weekly shopping. Thank you for your on-going support of the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank. Knox generously donates the Fellowship Hall for the Food Bank to provide service to Ayr and North Dumfries residents once every two weeks.
