1 FROM OUR STUDENT MINISTER October 31 st, 2017 marks the 500 th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. It is arguably the most significant event in Western history. Still, a lot of water has passed under the bridge in the roughly 500 years since. So why should we care? Here are four Reformation teachings that still matter, posted on our United Church of Canada website, from Rev Trisha Elliot: God is bigger than we are. The reformers emphasized God s grace, teaching that grace isn t something we can control, or buy for the right amount of cash, or require a requisite of religious or political standing. At great personal risk, the reformers helped us to see the vastness of God, a God that is beyond the power of human institutions and political constructions. A God that can not be limited. How do you see pod being limited today? An informed faith is necessary. Emphasizing the importance of the Bible, reformers set out to translate scripture, so people could read it for themselves, decide whether the church s actions were compatible with biblical teachings, and inform their own faith. The Reformers gave us the Bible in multiple languages. As a result, literacy skyrocketed. The idea that we are each responsible for doing theology, for applying our reason and intellect to our faith, is a gift of the Reformation. Theology should never be an elitist exercise but the work of all believers. How do you apply your intellect to your faith life? We stand on the shoulders of others. While we tend to attribute the Reformation to Martin Luther, there were several attempts before his to reform the church. For example, French preacher Peter Waldo ( ) emphasized poverty and simplicity and was excommunicated from the church for questioning points of the church s theology. Oxford theologian John Wycliffe ( ) named clerical abuses of power and helped translate the New Testament from Latin Vulgate to English. The moral: None of us ever really succeeds on our own. We stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before. Who are the unsung heroes of your successes? Change takes courage. The reformers opposed the political, economic, and religious powers of their day, powers that operated on and enforced the idea that God gave them absolute authority. When Martin Luther criticized the church, for example, he was well aware that fellow critics had been burned at the stake in Czechoslovakia and Florence for doing the same. The Reformers inspire us to live with conviction, to be prepared to sacrifice for what s right, and to take courage from our faith. How does your faith encourage you? Take some time this week to reflect on these teachings that are key foundations to our faith; thank God for how far we have come; and reflecting on what reform is needed in our church today. Peace, Gail. 2 Page 2 THE COUNCIL CORNER What a blessed people we are in our corner of the world! The corn harvest has been plentiful, the bean crops harvested and the hay crops preserved with multiple cuttings. This fall, rainfalls have been timely and temperatures boasted record highs. S ome even reported having Thanksgiving dinner outdoors and the possibility remained for the next two weekends. It doesn't get much better than that and despite the lack of frost, the autumn burst of colour reached its peak this week. Summer's lush greenery transformed into a patchwork of rich shades of crimson, bronze, orange, gold and yellow. We see God's glory everywhere and we need to give thanks for both bounty and beauty. To sum up Psalm 136, our mission is to seek today not to increase what we have but to increase our thanks for what we have. We are to "give thanks in all things." Perhaps most of all, we need to be very thankful that it is so effortless for us to feel close to God and to pray giving thanks at this time of harvest and splendour. When we praise God in our prayers today, may we also pray for those whose difficulties prevent them from seeing the same world. Yours in Christ, Betty Butcher, Chair of Council SUNDAY SCHOOL The Sunday school kids will be leading the church service on October 29 th. The children led their first church service last year and had a great time! Please pass along the message to anyone you know with kids who would like to be a part of it this year. The children have been practicing during the month. However, if you were not able to make it to Sunday school prior to the 29 th, but would like to be a part of the service, you re more than welcome to just show up this Sunday morning and we ll be glad to find a spot for you! Children, please be at church early on the morning of Sunday, October 29th to practice for the Worship service. Please be at the church at 9:30 am.
