1 education with a Higher purpose English Station Elementary NEWSLETTER CHRISTIAN ACADEMY SC HOOL SYSTEM Upcoming Events November pm - Open House for Prospective Families November 18 - Operation Christmas Child November Thanksgiving Break December 16 and 18, 6 pm -1st, 2nd & 3rd Grade Christmas Programs December 22 - January 2 - Christmas Break Operation Christmas Child Parents, please join us for chapel November 18 at 7:50 am in the red gym. "What goes into an Operation Christmas Child shoebox is fun. What comes out can change lives forever." - Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child is a ministry dear to our hearts. If you are unfamiliar with the outreach, it involves packing shoeboxes with small toys, candy, school supplies, and/or personal items for children ages 2-14 all over the world. In addition, they will be introduced to the love of Jesus Christ in a Bible program called "The Greatest Journey". So, come on, let's pack some boxes and plant the seed of God's love at Christmas time! What: Use the labels coming home with your child to pack a box for a boy or girl of the age(s) you choose. Look on Pinterest for some great ideas! You can pay for shipping online and receive a tracking number to follow your shoebox! When: Bring shoeboxes to the gym on Tuesday, November 18 during National Collection Week! We will pile the boxes on a giant map, pray over them, and stay in the gym for a special chapel beginning at 7:50 AM. Why: It is a simple, inexpensive (Dollar Store) project that will provide your family the joy of giving and a child the joy of knowing our Father. Thank you, thank you for your prayers, your boxes, and your time! Dear Parents, From the Principal s Desk It s hard to believe that the first quarter of school has come and gone, and we have Thanksgiving looking us right in the face. I believe that we have had a great start to our new year, and I am always happy to see each child walk through our hallways. I also have a great view of the preschool playground. This morning, while I was talking to a parent in my office, a little one came up to the window, face pressed close, to simply say hello and then ran off to play. How could I not love my job? Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit a fourth grade classroom during Bible class. Students were looking up verses, reading and commenting on how the Biblical truths apply to their lives. In this instance, the theme was about glorifying God. Consider these verses: Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 1 Corinthians 6:20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God with your body. 1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. I couldn t stay out of the discussion. So I shared with the students that we don t just glorify God when we are in church or chapel, and not only when we pray or read the Bible. Paul tells us that whatever we do, do all to the Glory of God. I love this! Studying, playing sports, travelling in the car; these are all opportunities to glorify God. And while we all dream of doing great things for God, I like what Brother Lawrence said 100 s of years ago: We ought not to be weary of doing little things for the love of God, who regards not the greatness of the work, but the love with which it is performed. Brother Lawrence, The Practice of the Presence of God To God be the Glory, Victor

2 Dr. Hoovers Notes Fifth Grade Chapel Praise Team This is the second year that we have had a Fifth Grade Praise team. This year, the group includes 45 fifth grade boys and girls who lead chapel each week! These dedicated students practice before school on Fridays, and then praise and worship God at our Tuesday morning chapels. It is so wonderful to have them showing spiritual leadership in this way. On some weeks, the Red Team leads worship, and the following week, the Blue Team acts as our leaders. We have even had the boys of the praise team lead our worship, as well as the girls. On some weeks, both teams join together to raise their voices to the Lord! It is exciting to think about how God will continue to use these children as they grow in the Lord! Parents of first, second, and third graders may have noticed your child singing Christmas songs! The Elementary Christmas programs are scheduled for Tuesday, December 16 and Thursday, December 18. Your child is specifically assigned to one of these nights, based on their regular classroom. Participation in this program is required and is an important part of their music grade for the second nine weeks (see the Family Handbook). Costumes: Costumes should be very simple, even homemade (i.e., shepherd s costume made out of robe, sandals, towel or cloth for headpiece, etc.). PLEASE make sure your child s costume is not too warm, as the stage lights make it quite hot. Parents may choose their child s costume from: shepherd, angel, a Biblical peasant, Roman soldier, or Wise man. Please, no shepherd staves or swords. Angels should have halos, but NO WINGS. (Wings block the view of too many other students and crowd the risers.) Each parent is responsible for acquiring their child s costume. Students should report in costume to their classroom teacher at 6:30 p.m. on the night of their performance. The program will be finished by 7:45 p.m. The following classes will perform on Performing Arts Club This year, the Performing Arts Club (PAC) consists of about 65 students in grades 3-5. PAC is led by Dr. Hoover and Mrs. Hart. They will be performing a musical, Back to the Manger, on Monday evening, November 17 at 7 p.m. They will also perform for the elementary school on Friday afternoon, November 21 at 1 p.m. This musical is a time traveling adventure in which the main characters learn the REAL meaning of Christmas. It allows for some fun but meaningful songs set in the 1940s, 1950s, 1970s, as well as other decades! We are excited that Mrs. Major of CAL s Signing Club is leading PAC in a beautiful song, The Angels Knew. Tuesday, December 16: Hawkins, Hendrix, Del Bosco, Simmons, Williamson, English, Curtis These classes are assigned to Thursday, December 18: Warlick, Aylor, May, Cabal, Oakley, Wheat, Webb *Concurrently with the Christmas program, we will be showcasing the art work your children have done with Ms. Le Compte. We will have a display of art work in the hallways for you to enjoy before and after the program, as well as a reception with some Christmas goodies. We are calling this our first Christmas Night of the Arts! Thanks, Parents, for all your help with costumes! I look forward to hearing the children singing and praising God! I think they will make us all say, Merry Christmas! PAC will perform a second musical in March, so registration will be open again in January for that semester.

3 Intramural News from Athletics Intramurals for the Fall 2014 has wrapped up with great participation. We had over 70 girls play Intramural Volleyball. They were so dedicated to their Saturday morning games. They improved their skill as the season progressed. Way to serve it up CAL! The students worked on their tennis skills with encouragement from the great coaches and high school tennis team volunteers. Way to go CAL tennis! Intramural Cross Country had just under 30 runners. The runners participated in two meets: The Lampe Run and the Dragon Invitational. They practiced twice a week and increased their time for the mile. Way to go runners. For the Winter: Intramural Basketball (Boys and Girls) Basketball Assessments were held on November 3 and the 6 at English Station Cro PARENT SURVEY Dear Parents, What a blessing it is to partner with you in the spiritual, academic, social and physical development of your child. The survey can be found by accessing the link below. The survey is available for completion through November 13, Click here for the link to the survey. Please allow me to offer myself as a resource should questions or concerns arise regarding your child s experience at Christian Academy. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you. 4 Chapel News Put Socks in the Box How can a third grader help homeless people? Well, homeless people need socks. They also need coats, mittens, hats, food, shelter and most of all the love of Christ; but third graders can at least give socks. Here s a third grade paraphrase of something Jesus said, When you give socks to a homeless person, it is like giving socks to Me. Noah Conlon, a student in Mrs. Cabal s third grade class, proposed that the class bring in new socks for homeless people during October. Noah s mother volunteered to take a box of socks from the class to Wayside Christian Mission. It was lots of fun to Put Socks in the Box and know that Christ was pleased. Father Daughter Dance Rescheduled for Friday March 20 Our theme this year in Chapel is Loving God in 3D: God, Each Other, and the World Our verse for this year is Mark 12: One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, Of all the commandments, which is the most important? 29 The most important one, answered Jesus, is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. So far we have been challenged to realize that we want to offer God ALL of ourselves including our brains! We have also been blessed to have an awesome praise team (50 members strong) to lead us in worship! The Signing team has also shared their gifts in worship! November we will consider Loving God with Our Strength (Nov 4 and 11), Loving the World by Giving as we bring in our Christmas Child Shoe Boxes (Nov 18), and Being Thankful as the Kindergarteners share with us. All are invited to come and join in worship each Tuesday at 8:15 (we are done by 8:45). FYI: when you come your child is welcome to come and sit with you this is really a joy to your student! Pray for us and join each Tuesday! Dr. Michael Troy Shell Chapel Coordinator

5 Operation Christmas Shoe Box Tips We recommend using a durable plastic shoe box instead of a card board box. The approximate size to purchase is 12 x 6 x 5. Put a rubber band around your box. If you would like to giftwrap your box, wrap the lid separate in paper and then line the box with gift wrap. Do not wrap the entire box or any of its contents. Do not include war related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; seeds; chocolate or food; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; or aerosol cans. Label your box for a boy or girl Include a check for $7 to cover shipping Pray The CAL Signing Club is a group of 4th and 5th graders that meet after school and learn American Sign Language. They perform monthly for elementary chapels. Our goal is to praise our Great God through worship and interpretive sign in a way that is unique and fun. 2nd Grade Hubers Orchard
