2 Samaritans Purse Samaritans Purse - Operation Christmas Child October is the month to complete your shoe box to send to kids in poor countries. The box can contain Hygiene items, toys, clothes, craft items and accessories. Please don t pack any liquids or war related items. The boxes are available from church, please see Sandi (0830hr), Kerryn (1000hr) and Deb (6pm) for further details. The boxes are due back at the end of October. 2

They love transparency. Carey Nieuwhof ( Church Leaders magazine) When you share your weaknesses, everyone (including Christians) resonates. 12. They invite their friends if they like what they re discovering. They will be your best inviters if they love what you re doing. 13. Their spiritual growth trajectory varies dramatically. One size does not fit all. You need a flexible on ramp that allows people to hang in the shadows for a while as they make up their mind, and one that allows multiple jumping in points throughout the year. 14. Occasional is regular. When they start coming, they don t always attend every week. Giving them easy, obvious, and strategic steps to get connected is important. Disconnected people generally don t stick. 15. Some want to be anonymous and some don t. So make your church friendly to both. Also see the previous point. This is huge. 5

6 Every Friday during the school term our church youth group meets in the church auditorium. Our night consists of a small bible study, crazy games and a meal together. Youth is now open to year 5/6 students. Every Friday at 7pm Dinner is provided for a $5 donation. Please bring along your friends! Just on a quick side note about the youth group, recently we had Stephen Kearns join the team of leaders as a weekly addition to the youth ministry. Stephen plays a rather large role in our youth group and has extensive influence on the youth that attend. We ve had all kinds of fun times already and it s so wonderful to have him on board with our ministry! So Thank You Stephen! 6

9 In other news: we have some pretty exciting filming commencing in our area and more specifically in our church! With a Mel Gibson picture being filmed in Richmond and at our church! The film is titled Hacksaw Ridge, directed by Mel Gibson, the picture takes us back to the WW2 front lines. This true story carries us to the front lines following Desmond Doss, Andrew Garfield, a front line soldier who refused to carry weaponry. A source reveals that the filming of Gibson's first Australian film and first directing effort in a decade, will commence in September across NSW. Gibson shares his excitement surrounding the film in an interview. "I'm so glad to be here again, working here again, bumping into people I've known for years, decades, again... and moving forward - it's been great," Gibson told reporters at Sydney's Fox Studios on Thursday. 9

10 50/60 Ministry Further to the articles in the previous newsletter, I would like to reflect on one of the issues facing not only this congregation, and that is the matter of ministry to people in a seeming no-man's land between empty-nester dom (children leaving home) and grand-parenting. Demographically this group might be in work but realistically they will be facing retirement in the next 10 years or so. Services and activities in mid-week like the senior s luncheons and TOFMS do not coincide with the current lifestyle necessities of this group. Yet all people need to be ministered to and so I would like to raise this matter of concern to the general Congregation. This in-between time has its own worries. Pre-fifties might still be concerned with career and child-raising. Retirement people have already dealt with the question of where they will find their purpose after work. But finding a new purpose and identity are big issues particularly for the in-betweener s. These subjects, like mental illness and death and domestic abuse seem not to be spoken of. Therefore, I am wondering if there is anyone who might be interested in the ministry area of 50-60s and in joining a group? 10
