1 FROM OUR STUDENT MINISTER Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) As I write this on a beautiful sunny day in Ayr, my thoughts are for those that are struggling through tornado winds and torrential rain in Texas. I cannot imagine what is like waiting on the roof of your house for someone to rescue you, as you see all your belongings washed down the road that now looks like a river. It is difficult for us to comprehend the situation. One man was interviewed after a harrowing air lift from his roof, he had lost everything and yet he was laughing; he said, I just thank God that I am safe. You just have to trust God. Having just completed a course on the Hebrew Bible, I am reminded of the journey of the Israelites as they left Egypt: like many Texans, they too had lost all their belongings; they faced days of travelling through the desert not knowing exactly where they would find safety; at times food was short and water was sparse; and like the people of Texas, I am sure they were worried about their future. But they trusted God. Isn t that a reminder to all of us? We just have to trust God. When we don t know where funds will come to pay for the accessibility project at our church trust in God. When we seek new music ministry at Knox and are uncertain of the road ahead trust in God. When we face injury or sickness and are not sure of how long it will take to recover trust in God. When our personal lives seem in turmoil and we face uncertainties trust in God. As you get back into routine this week, children return to school, summer draws to an end, and your minister returns to church, remember that we may not know what lies ahead for us, but we are called to always trust in God! 2 Page 2 THE COUNCIL CORNER September is upon us and so too a little more consistency and routine in our church. Many of you have joined with me in welcoming Gail back from study and holidays last Sunday. Mike and Merry will be our music directors for the month of September. We are so grateful for all they have voluntarily contributed over the past years. As their lives are incredibly busy and their commitments many, however, they have recommended that Council approve advertising for a full-time Music Director for Knox. We will still look forward to Mike and Merry's musical talents as they sing in the choir and enjoy more freedom on Sunday mornings. Our music program is an important part of worship and we will pray for successful music leadership ahead. As Ephesians 5:19 says, "Speak to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." Also. at our Council meeting on Wednesday night, was the presentation of details for the Knox concert on Sunday, October 1st. It will feature singer/songwriter, Kiley Joe Masson who will sing songs through the past decades accompanied by his guitarists. Due to Kiley's dedicated following and the anticipation of ticket sales, the concert will be held at the NDCC and will include a light meal of beef on a bun etc. following the concert. For tickets please call Suzanne Gillow at or Betty Butcher at Let's all support this endeavour to raise funds for the accessibility project! On behalf of our congregation, I extend sincere congratulations to Elizabeth Millward on her recent marriage. Elizabeth was married during a beautiful wedding ceremony in Stratford on August 26th. We so appreciated her work at Knox as a Youth Group Leader with her sister, Julie, a few years ago. We wish her the very best. I will see you at the park this Sunday as Knox and Glen Morris United Church join together for our last of summer services in the park. Blessings to all, Betty Butcher, Chair of Council Holiday Services in the Downtown Gazebo During the long weekends of the summer, the Ayr Ministerial holds a combined outdoor service in Ayr's Centennial Park Gazebo. The next service date is September 3rd. Hosted by Knox United and officiated by new Student Minister of Glen Morris United, Megan Gilholm. In the case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the church that is hosting that day. Service commences on Sunday, at 10:30am. This year, loose offerings or undesignated offerings will be given to the

3 Page 3 NEW INFORMATION Knox Music Ministry: MINISTRY & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE Merry Schmidt and I met on August 30th with Gail Fricker, Janet Millward (Worship), and Betty Butcher (Council Chair) to discuss the future needs concerning our music program at Knox. As you know, Gibson McMillan provided music direction and services on alternate Sundays to give Merry and Mike Schmidt a well-deserved break. An ad was placed in the RCCO website (June & July) in the hopes of finding a replacement for Gibson. Unfortunately no candidates responded to the ad. Gail has been in contact with the Laurier University Music Program as well. After considerable discussion, Merry suggested that it is now time to place a new ad in the RCCO Website for a full-time music director. (7 hours weekly) M&P Committee members sent this motion to Knox Council last evening (Aug.30th) and it was passed. I have sent this ad to the RCCO office this morning. If you have any questions in this regard, feel free to contact Merry or myself. Church Office Hours: Please note that beginning September 1, 2017 the office hours for Barbara, Administrative Assistant will be Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 am. - 12:30. Susan Humphrey, Chair, M&P Attention all men of Knox! The Men's breakfast is the first Wednesday of the month, September 6th starting at 8:30 a.m. at Tim Hortons. Come out, order, and join in the conversation. The Upper Room Daily Devotionals have arrived for September/October. Please pick up a copy, located in the Communications Nook on your way up to the Sanctuary, on the right hand side at the bottom of the stairs. The Upper Room is a great way to start or end your day thinking about God and thanking Him for all our blessings.
