1 Friday, June 9, 2017 From the Student Minister s Desk Report from Hamilton Conference A couple of weeks ago (May 27 th -29 th ) I had the opportunity to participate in Hamilton Conference. It was my first United Church Conference, and I wasn t quite sure what to expect. I found that it was a wonderful chance for me to connect and worship with other ministers across the Conference. The highlight for me was most certainly singing in the choir for the Ordination Service for some of my fellow student ministers two of whom I have come to know quite well through Presbytery meetings. What a fantastic service of celebration, and a privilege to be part of it. Throughout the weekend, we had times of theological reflection, based on the theme of Holy Shift. We listened to a reading and then in our table groups, we discussed the following questions I thought it would be good for us to also reflect on them as a congregation: How do we respond (as leaders and as people of faith) in a time of Holy Shift? How do we live into change? What will we choose to take with us? What do we want or need to get rid of? What are the best roots (traditions) that we have received in the church? What are the best roots that we can plant? At Conference we spent some time looking at the relationship between our Indigenous People in history and today; again, the focus was how do we change to ensure that we live into the promise? Keeping on the theme of change, we heard a report from the Affirming Network. A motion was made, voted on and passed to accept Hamilton Conference Affirming Mission Statement: As an Affirming Ministry within the United Church of Canada, the Hamilton Conference provides leadership and resources so that the life and work of Jesus Christ may be known in the Church and the world, while seeking to recognize and celebrate the diversities of sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, ethnicities, races, ages, geographical realities and the socioeconomic circumstances of all people; and holding sacred all diversities in the life and work of the Conference. We were encouraged to think what being an Affirming ministry may mean in our own congregations? How are we, for example, identifying and working to remove barriers for participation in the life and work of the Church at Knox this would include our vision for our accessibility project. And how are we providing and promoting resources and educational opportunities such as our Church in Action s proposed book club to study Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese and potential visit to Woodland Cultural Centre. I believe at Knox United, that we are recognizing the need for change. We are opening up our hearts to be radically welcoming, but always need to remind ourselves to be aware of how we can create belonging spaces where all are valued and cared for. Thank you for allowing me to attend Hamilton Conference, and for the wonderful Lay Team who lead worship while I was away. Peace, Gail Friday, June 9, 2017 Inside this issue: Council Corner Sunday, June 11th Knox Cafe 3 Messy Church 4 This Week details 5 VBS 6 Baby Bottle Drive 7 St. Luke s invite 8 Pictures 9 Service Schedule Volunteer Schedule 2 10 This Week at Knox 11 Scripture Reflections Prayers for The Week 12 Knox United Church Student Minister: Gail Fricker Church office Tel: admin@knoxuayr.com Webpage: knoxuayr.weebly.com
2 Friday, June 9, 2017 Page 2 THE COUNCIL CORNER One of my favourite hymns is "Come in, Come in and Sit Down" and continues "You are a part of the family." It's a song that has such a welcoming feel to it and I think we all like to feel a part of something greater. It will be great to see our church members compiled in one "album", our church directory. It will indeed feel like we are part of a church family. A special thank you to all the members of the Congregational Life Committee who made the project possible. They arranged appointments and also generously gave their time to host the photography sessions, afternoons and evenings. Your gift of time was so appreciated. Thank you Pat, Anne, Janet, Karen, Shirley, Marilyn, Karen, Linda, Ina and Heather! On another note, it's hard to believe that nine months have passed since our student minister, Gail, has been with us. We have appreciated all the talent, enthusiasm, hard work and compassion she has blessed us with and we wish her the very best in her studies in Halifax over the next couple of months. She will leave on June 17th but we look forward to her return in September. May God truly bless her with safe travels, inspiration and endurance in her studies. See you in church, Blessings to all, Betty Butcher, Chair of Council Sunday June 11th- Come Celebrate! Celebrate with the Sunday School teachers as Sunday school wraps up a great year. Celebrate Gail's last service before leaving for her studies in Halifax. Cake & ice cream following the service provided by M+P & Congregational Life Committees. God Bless CAN YOU PROVIDE SOME TREATS? We are looking for donations of a plate of treats for the Knox Café music evening on June 9 th. If you can help, please drop them off at the church in the afternoon of Friday June 9 th. Thank you for your support
3 Page 3 Friday, June 9, 2017 Rejoice & Sing! We are on our way to purchasing 50 copies of More Voices Each book costs $20. Donations of $20 can be made to purchase a copy for the church in memory of someone special or from yourself. An inscription will be place inside the book. Donations should be placed in an envelope, marked for More Voices and submitted to the Church office. Please include the name(s) of who the book is being donated in memory of and from who. A CAFÉ is going to be held in June to help raise funds to offset any costs of the purchase.

Fill it with your spare change and return it on Father s Day weekend, June 18th. Tax receipts will be issued and all the proceeds from the campaign go directly to the operations of Marillac Place and have an immediate impact on their residents and their infants. Marillac Place provides a safe home for women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five who are pregnant or who have a child, or who are attempting to regain care of their child. Mothers who come to Marillac Place receive 24 hour guidance and support, continue their education and are enabled with the life-skills they need to care for themselves and their child. Marillac Place is located in Kitchener and can accommodate 10 mothers and 11 children up to 24 months of age. Residency is permitted for up to 12 months. We provide chances for brighter futures to mother-led families, helping them to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Baby Bottles are available at the back of the sanctuary. Filled bottles (with change or a cheque) can be placed on the offering plate or dropped off to the church office.

Tickets need to be purchased/ordered ahead of time as there is a limited number of tickets available. Contact: Rev. Debra for tickets or further information Help Saint Luke s United Church, Hespeler celebrate their 180th Anniversary and Canada s 150th Anniversary by joining us on Thursday, July 13th, 2017 for a 2 hour ride on an antique (100 year old) Steam Engine passenger train. Be at the St. Jacob s Market train depot by 1:40 p.m. for a departure time of 2:00 p.m. returning at 4:00. We will try to arrange for car pooling. SUNDAY SCHOOL 2017/ The Sunday School program is in need of a couple more teachers for Sunday School next year, For those of you who aren t familiar with how our program runs, each teacher normally volunteers to teach about once per month. We sign up about a month in advance so we can pick a week that works for us that month. There are 2 teachers and typically about 5-10 kids in attendance each week. We take a one room school house type of approach. When Sunday School first starts, we all sit together and go over the lesson for the week. After the lesson, we break off into two separate groups, depending on how many kids are there. We normally keep the kids from about JK to Grade 2 separate from the older kids so that the older kids can do a more in depth lesson and an age appropriate craft or activity. If there aren t many kids there that week, we normally just keep all the kids together. We follow an online curriculum so you can see the lesson in advance and plan a craft or activity to go along with the lesson that week. There are plenty of ideas online so finding a craft is not difficult. If you have any further questions about teaching or if you re interested in signing up, please contact Heather Raby either by heather.raby@outlook.com or by phone at CHURCH in ACTION Church in Action is scrapbooking! We are going to make a church calendar for a look at what s happening at Knox. We are looking for a few pictures from each event that takes place at KNOX. They don t have to be of an individual person - we don t want to single anyone out - just a panorama of the event. If you have 1 or 2 pictures from any of the events, please them to: acarroll@carrollenterprises.ca
