1 From the Student Minister s Desk In Halifax, NS Inside this issue: Council Corner Services in the Park Skylight Festival Food Bank (Jul) 2 3 Well, as you can see by my wonderful wall of cards that has grown bit by bit every day, reminding me that you are all praying for me and thinking about me it is now time to come home (or at lest get rest at the cottage with my family). These last two weeks have been very tiring with late night assignments and heavy readings. But, it has also been exciting grappling with Old Testament doctrines of creation, merit by deeds, atonement, and even purgatory! I have had wonderful stimulating conversations with my peers (sometimes over a glass of wine!) and I have enjoyed becoming acquainted again with the books of Genesis, Daniel, and Exodus as well as introduced to the book of Tobit! Don t be surprised when I preach the odd sermon or two from the Old Testament when I come back I believe that our Christian faith has lots to learn from our Hebrew roots. I want to thank you all so much for supporting me throughout the last 6 weeks my wall of cards has been quite the envy of my peers I ve even shared the odd or two when I felt someone really needed an boost! One colleague has taken a photo to show her congregation in the hope that they will take the hint to do it for her next year so Knox, your caring and loving spirit is shining all the way to Halifax! See you soon and enjoy the last days of summer! Peace, Gail. 2 Page 2 THE COUNCIL CORNER As summer moves along, we continue to have an interesting schedule at Knox with a variety in ministry. Our student minister, Gail, is just finishing her course of study in Halifax this week and will now enjoy a well-deserved summer holiday. This Sunday, let us all welcome back Rev. Randy MacKenzie, retired minister from Brantford, who helped us so much a year ago. Randy will also be with us on Sunday, August 13th. On Sunday, August 6th, we will enjoy our service in the park with Christ Anglican Church leading. Then there will be one more lay minister as in the past few Sundays before Gail's return on August 27th. Our church council took a break in July and will meet again on August 30th when Gail has returned. If there are any concerns or thoughts that you would like brought forth to council, please do not hesitate to phone or see me at church. I hope everyone is enjoying the beauty of summer with so much lush growth from the warm summer rains. It seems the birds, butterflies, pleasant temperatures and flowers are at a peak now and need to be appreciated each and every day. I'm reminded of the well-known and cheery hymn, "All Things Bright and Beautiful... in love, God made them all." I hope it brings joy to you as well as you recall those words of praise in such a beautiful hymn. Blessings to all, Betty Butcher, Chair of Council Holiday Services in the Downtown Gazebo During the long weekends of the summer, the Ayr Ministerial holds a combined outdoor service in Ayr's Centennial Park Gazebo. The next service date is August 6th with Christ Church, Anglican hosting. In the case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the church that is hosting that day. Service commences on Sunday, at 10:30am. This year, loose offerings or undesignated offerings will be given to the Woodland Cultural Center, and Neighbours Helping Neighbours.

Church heating boiler inspection Every two years, a steam boiler servicing company must come to do work on the church heating system. The boiler must be drained, both ends unbolted to open, inspection ports opened, fully inspected, new gasketing installed, new flue cement added, and put back into service. This work was due and carried out July 14th. The result of the inspection was that the boiler is in good working condition at this time. Below find a photo of the boiler room with the end of the boiler swung open. (info from Wayne and Wayne)

Throughout the week of July 30, 2017 We pray for the churches and their pastors in Ayr Ministerial: Glen Morris United () We pray for the churches in the Hamilton Conference: Underwood-Wesley (Bruce Presbytery) As we participate in the Monthly Prayer Cycle: (July) Ryerson Camp, Vittoria Pray for Our Church - Bay of Quinte Conference Prayer requested by British Columbia Conference Dear London Conference: Last week President Joyce Payne reached out to her counterpart in British Columbia Conference, President Rev. Cari Copeman-Haynes, to express London Conference s concern for the people and pastoral charges dealing with the wildfire crisis. I offer an excerpt from President Cari s response (with her permission). Please share it widely with your congregation and continue to hold all at risk in prayer. We are so grateful for your expressions of solidarity! Our Conference staff have been keeping the ear to the ground in the areas most affected by the wildfires, and what we have been hearing from ministers serving in those congregations is that prayer is the biggest request. For some folks, the memory of the events of 2003 has been stimulated by this experience, so there is also a cascading trauma-memory for those who are not directly in the path this summer. It s a complex situation and the weather is not helping - which of course raises the issue of climate change and the larger context of peak oil and our dependence on carbon. Everything is connected... But we are grateful to be connected to you, and to our faith tradition, and to the praying communities of faith you are writing on behalf of. Thanks be to God for our siblingship in Christ! President Rev. Cari Copeman-
