1 Friday, November 10, 2017 FROM OUR STUDENT MINISTER Remember! Last Sunday, we gathered To Remember and to honor our men and women in the armed forces, past and present. Tomorrow, on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, people across the world will gather at cenotaphs and take two minutes of silence, To Remember. We will remember. These are the foundational words for Remembrance Day. On this day, we remember the Canadian men and women who sacrificed their lives, in an attempt that others might live free from oppression and violence. We will remember. We remember the horrors of the trenches in World War One. We remember the millions that were killed by guns, bombs, or in gas chambers in World War Two. And we remember, the thousands that returned home from war, but were never the same. We will remember. And in remembering, we hope that it will push us to live in peace in the present. In remembering, we hope it will enable us to value individuals of all nations, cultures and religions and recognize everyone as part of God s creation. In remembering, we hope that it will encourage us to teach love and acceptance, not hate or prejudice to our children. We will remember. And we will not forget that our freedom is fragile. The news of the horrific mass shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas reminds us of the hurt and despair in our world. As we lift our hearts in support and pray that the love of Christ will be felt by those affected, we will not forget that while we live in peace, other parts of the world still live in devastation and at war. We will not forget the vision of Christ s Peace for the world - a vision that spurred on our brave men and women, both in the past, and in the present, and will continue to do so in the future. We will remember, and remembering will give birth to giving thanks, giving thanks for the incredible blessings of life here in Canada. Remembering will ensure that we work together for freedom, not just for ourselves, but for the world. Remembering will encourage each of us to do our part to create a future of freedom and acceptance around the world. We will remember to remember, not just on November 11 th, but every day. Prayer: Loving God. Help us to remember and give thanks. We know that our freedom is fragile, and comes at an immense cost. We honor our soldiers that give their lives at home and abroad to protect our freedom. Help us to do our part in teaching love and gratitude, so that we may all work together towards a vision of Christ s Peace. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. 2 Friday, November 10, 2017 Page 2 THE COUNCIL CORNER Thankfully, the painting of the outside trim of our church is completed and the equipment has moved on. All seemed to go well with the exception of the attic window frame (which was crumbling and consequently boarded up and painted like the trim) and the rose window which also had framework problems. Administration committee members Harry Humphrey, Wayne Bourne and Ron Cochrane are earnestly patching and working on the frame of the rose window to preserve it's beauty as it peeks through the golden pipes. What a blessing to worship in such a wonderful building with the sincere caring and efforts of so many! Just last month, a visitor to one of our church services was Cameron MacDonald, a former Knox church member who has been a resident of Toronto for many decades. He recalled that he had been christened by Rev. Currie and was thrilled to see the "gallery" of photos of former ministers displayed on the wall across from the church office. Expressing a great deal of discouragement, he spoke of the lack of upkeep and crumbling walls inside most churches in Toronto. He asked me to pass on huge praise to the supporters of our church for an outstanding job keeping up all parts of our building. He said that everything looked so perfect that he was in total awe of what had been done to maintain its beauty and grandeur. At the end of my brief chat, Mr. MacDonald added that he would go back to Toronto absolutely inspired and also with good memories of one of the most beautiful and moving services he had ever attended. His encouraging comments should serve to keep us all from taking for granted our many blessings on Sunday mornings. We must always maintain a clear understanding of the difference between Church and the church building. owever, we must never lose sight that it is the church that allows "Church" to gather for worship and for instruction and fellowship. The church allows community to gather for a plethora of purposes. May our Knox building serve our Church and community for many years to come with the continued, faithful support of all. ("So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary to see Your power and Your glory... Because Your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You." Psalm 63) Yours in Christ, Betty Butcher Chair of Council 50 Manley Street, AYR Book Sale Friday, November 10, pm - 8:30 pm Saturday, November 11, am - 3:00 pm Fundraiser for CLAY (Canadian Lutheran & Anglican Youth gathering)
