1 November Newsletter 2012 November is a busy month at YOUR Church. We open the month with our All Saints celebration on the 6th, moving right into the Turkey Dinner on the 10th. The 11th will be an especially full day! We will have one worship service that day and there will be a special emphasis on children and youth and how we as a church can minister to young people in more effective ways. Pleas put this special hour on your calendar and DO NOT MISS IT! On the evening of the 11th there are two special events. For our leaders, there is the Charge Conference, held at Milan UMC at 6:00p.m. I hope that members of our Administrative Council (Committee and ministry team leaders) will make it a point to come and add your voice to the proceedings. At the same time, everyone who does not attend Charge Conference is invited to support the community Thanksgiving Service, sponsored by the Ministerial Association, at St. Louis Church at 7:00p.m. During the week following the Turkey Dinner, we will once again serve as a drop off site for the Operation Christmas Child ministry, sponsored by Samaritan s purse. Watch for your opportunities to help out as we collect shoebox gifts from the congregations in Southeastern Indiana and prepare them for shipment to the children who will be blessed by this effort in various sites around the world. What a wonderful way to be able to bring blessings to children who live without many of the advantages we take for granted! When we add these activities to the normal schedule of worship and activities and toss in the Thanksgiving holiday, you can see that the month fills up quickly! I hope that you will take advantage of the opportunities to serve Christ that are offered this month and that you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration, filled with laughter, fellowship and praise to the One who delivers us from slavery to sin. American Servicemen & Servicewomen overseas Sunday School News: The Adult Sunday School Class has just completed Adam Hamilton s excellent video presentation entitled Christianity s Family Tree consisting of eight Sunday classes each giving a brief history and major beliefs of a Christian denomination. On Sunday, November 4, we will begin a new four session video series, Can Christmas Still Change The World?. We gather in the church parlor every Sunday at 9:00A.M. Please come and join us! 3 News From The Food Pantry! Many Thanks for the October cookie mix and muffin mix drive. In the month of November, we will continue to request the cookie mix and the muffin mix. These items provide extra holiday food items for the Batesville Food Pantry clients. Help Wanted Our congregation has the opportunity to staff the Food Pantry in the month of December. The Pantry is open from noon - 4pm on Wednesday and we have 2 hour shifts and 4 hour shifts available. We need 8 people to work each Wednesday. If you want to be part of one of the most fun activities of the holiday season this is the job for you! please contact Nance Widdowson at or if you can donate some time on the following dates: 12/5, 12/11, 12/19. There are openings from noon - 2pm, 2pm - 4pm, and noon - 4pm. Experience is not necessary, the benefits are great! UMW NEED YOUR HELP The UMW is in need of donations of candy and fruit for approximately 350 to 400 kids bags at the Food Pantry in December. All donations should be brought to the church by Sunday, December 2nd. We already have some fruit donated but will need more. Apples and Oranges would be the best to donate. Please let Linda Schumacher know if you are planning to donate fruit or money to buy the fruit. PRH News: Overheard at PRH Band: Do the same on the intro as the outtro. 4 OUTREACH NEWS As we approach the end of the year, out Outreach Team will be putting together the budget for We will be working on this budget at our next meeting scheduled for Monday, November 19 at 6:30 P.M. Our intent is to distribute the budget to everyone in January, 2013 prior to our annual Faith Promise Mission Sunday, scheduled for February 3, Lowell and Claudia Wertz will be with us that day to share the latest developments in their mission station in Tanzania, Africa. We are currently in our twentieth year of supporting them. At our last meeting it was decided that one of our annual budget items, called Six in One, needed some elaboration so that everyone would be aware of what this is. We have carried this item ever since the separate Faith Promise Mission budget was set up (1992). It was decided then that the six separate separate envelopes for the Methodist Conference, at six different times per year would be consolidated and handled by the Outreach Committee. This way we could meet our obligation more conveniently, without the burden of six separate envelope collections throughout the year. The six items ($100 each) are defined as follows: One Great Hour of Sharing Golden Cross Sunday Retired Ministers Fund World Wide Communion Sunday United Methodist Student Day Bishops Christmas Offering March May September October December December We recently paid the October 1 item, $100 for World Wide Communion Sunday. We plan on reminding everyone of these payments as they occur. We in Outreach are so very privileged to represent you as our Church reaches out in advancing the cause of Christ in service to others. Thank you for your support. Turkey Supper is right around the corner! In the final push towards November 10th, we need you to sell as many tickets as possible to your friends and neighbors. After selling tickets, please return the money to the office in the original envelope with your name on it as soon as possible. Turkey Supper is our opportunity to show the community what a friendly church family we are. Let's seize this moment! To this end, members of our Church should follow the same practices as we expect from our guests. If you are eating dinner at church on the 10th, you will enter through the sanctuary and be directed to the basement using the stairs at the far end of the classroom hallway (not the stairway off the alley). At the bottom of the stairs you will give your ticket(s) to Larry or his surrogate, choose from among an array of delicious desserts, set your dessert down on the table and stand in line at the serving hatch. Once seated, servers will come around and offer you beverage choices and second servings of food. We share our food, our cheer, and our rules with them. In the past as our community guests shuffle off, full of turkey and cranberry salad, the night's workers sit down and break bread together before the work of clean up begins. If you are working at Turkey Supper, please postpone taking a break to eat until then (or grab a meal beforehand.)

5 Youth News: Here are some opportunities to work side by side with the youth and to serve our community! Operation Christmas Child (shoebox mission) Our church will once again be a Collection Center for this wonderful Samaritan's Purse mission. Consider working with youth in our church to collect shoeboxes throughout collection week November ! Mark you calendars now to work with the youth on the following days: Mon Nov 12 10:00am 1:00pm Tues Nov 13 5:00pm 7:00pm Wed Nov 14 6:00pm 8:00pm Thus Nov 15 5:00pm 7:00pm Fri Nov 16 9:00am 12:00pm, 3:30pm 6:00pm Sat Nov 17 9:00am 12:00pm, 2:00pm 4:00pm Sun Nov 18 1:00pm 3:00pm Mon Nov 19 9:00am 11:00am Drivers with large vehicles will be needed on November 19 th to transport all boxes collected at our collection center to Connersville United Methodist Church. We will start loading around 4:15pm then head to Connersville immediately following the loading. Country Store is quickly approaching!! Turkey Dinner is right around the corner (November 10 th ) and that means the youth will be putting together their biggest fundraiser of the year! The Country Store will once again be setup and ran by the youth during Turkey Dinner. As you are working with your arts and crafts consider making a few extra for the Country Store. We always take in baked goods, candies, cookies, etc. Please start thinking about what you would be willing to donate to the youth. The youth ALWAYS appreciate your donations and your time!

6 Announcing the marriage of Craig Stutler (formerly of Batesville) and Ashley Pearson (of Greenwood, IN) on Sept. 22, 2012 at Roberts Park United Methodist church. Craig is the son of Dennis and Valerie Stutler. The couple now resides in Indianapolis. 7 ABC Preschool News and Events Are you aware that ABC Preschool is now with us? Tammy Hullemeyer is the director/owner. The preschool gathers Monday through Friday in the upstairs classrooms. Karen Casper and Naomi Melia are assistant teachers. During the day our church is alive with the sound of children s laughter, song and learning. The children have Show-n-tell, letter sack days, craft days, picture day, as well as field trips to the fire station in Batesville, Vogt Farm, and many other trips are planned in the Spring. This week they children dressed up as their favorite Halloween character and paraded to Larry, Laura, and the Monday morning Bible study ladies! Larry had his Pink Panther Tennis shoes on as well as his pink helmut. Laura Dressed as a Denver Broncos football fan. During the Fall break, Tammy, Naomi, and Karen spent many hours sprucing up her classrooms and they look fantastic! There will be updates on our website on the preschool s ongoing activities. As a church we are truly blessed to have a preschool. prayers are needed and appreciated, however, for Tammy s 4 year old niece (Peyton) who is having serious health issues. Beta Sigma Phi Holiday Bazaar 11/4/2012 Batesville Primary School, 10am - 3pm This holiday bazaar consists of vendors with their crafts and goods. A traditional cookie walk and lunch are offered. 8 Turkey Dinner at Batesville United Methodist Church Saturday, November 10, :30-6:30 Adults $8.00 Children $5.00 Carry Out 4:00-6:30 Tickets are available in the church office Monday - Friday 9:00-12:00 Many have requested the recipe for the "Batesville United Methodist Church Cranberry Salad". This recipe is found on page 8 in the Treasured Recipes cookbook published by the church in These books are available for $10.00 each in the church office. 1lb fresh cranberries ( not cooked) 1 2/3 c. sugar 2 apples chopped 1 orange, ground ( with peeling) 1 c. celery. diced 1 c. nuts, chopped 1 large pkg, red jello (preferably cherry or strawberry) 2 c. hot water Grind cranberries. Set aside. Make red jello, using only 2 cups hot water; do not add any cold water, otherwise it will not gel properly. Add all of the ingredients to the jello.
