Besides the Incarnation which made it possible, the redemptive suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ is the single event in all of time, in all of salvation history most important to humanity. It is important because this event opens up eternity for us, allows us to be born into eternal life in joyful being with our God in the heavenly kingdom. What used to be called eternal death now becomes eternal life. The resurrection appearance stories that we hear in the Gospels during Easter are full of wonder and awe, nothing like this has ever happened before and will never happen again. The only question is how will we respond to this wondrous event? Will we believe and change the way that we live in response to this amazing gift of God, or will we ignore the message of the Gospel and live our lives as if nothing extraordinary has happened. The choice is always left up to us, God will not force us to be His. All He will do is present Himself to us. We are the ones who have to respond, just as Thomas did today in the Gospel. Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. - Deacon Bill Watzek Family Faith & Fun Day APRIL 21 10:00am-2:00pm at st. joan of arc $10 per child Children 2 and under FREE YOUR CARING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN DOWNTOWN APRIL 8 ST. 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE IN THE AFTERGLOW OF EASTER. WHAT NOW? Please check out this bulletin for pictures and faith formation articles. The Easter Vigil began the "glow" as we basked in the soft light of a thousand candles reminding us of our Baptismal dignity and of our Baptismal promises. The lighted Easter Candle representing Christ Resurrected pierced the darkness of the Church and symbolized the triumph of light over darkness. On Easter Sunday we heard again the proclamation of the empty tomb, the wonderment and fear of the apostles and the promise of Jesus to the angel "He is risen and goes before you into Galilee". These events that we tell over and over again have a power that is transformational. During Holy Week, we have journeyed with Jesus through his suffering, death and resurrection and now we must figure out what to do. Today we are not so different from the apostles. They were unsure of their future but remembered the presence and the glow of Jesus' words and the power of His example. So, too, must we. In a world that is sometimes very dark, we must follow the light and live in its glow. The teachings, example, miracles and powerful deeds of our most compassionate Savior can inspire and enliven us. We cannot be overwhelmed by the reality of a broken world but, rather, see in it our vocation and mission. To live in the afterglow of the Resurrection is to see with the eyes of faith that the world longs for redemption and for transformation. God's grace working through us is to be the catalyst for the new creation that is unfolding right now. To live in the afterglow of the Resurrection is to imagine possibilities and to help them to become realities. We can help to end hatred and violence, war, famine, homelessness and insecurity. We can imagine a world free of them and a world that God wills for us. The changes required began with ourselves and all those over whom we have influence and power. The challenge is even greater than an individual one though because it challenges us to work together, create together, vision together the Kingdom of God. The afterglow is far from nostalgia or sentimentality. It is a clear eyed and courageous world view that is the gift of faith and its farsightedness. This Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday and it teaches us that it is "mercy and not sacrifices" that God requests of us. To model "Divine Mercy" in our interpersonal relationships can transform them into connections with the transforming love of God. What a powerful connection! May we live in the "afterglow" of the Resurrection for a while yet but not let it just comfort us but also enliven and invigorate us for the year to come and the fire of Pentecost. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw APRIL 8 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

6 SJA HOLIDAY FAITH & FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY EASTER BRUNCH Easter Brunch was so special! Everyone relaxed, made new friends from St. Joan and left feeling like a family. The Easter Brunch at Via Mizner Golf & City Club was perfect in every way... yet the best part was our two tables of parishioners - who clearly reflected the Love and Light of Jesus. SJA SCHOOL LIVE STATIONS OF THE CROSS As part of one of St. Joan of Arc's treasured traditions, the sixth-grade classes performed a live "Stations of the Cross" for the rest of the student body. The students had various roles from narrating to singing to acting as they prayerfully brought the passion of Jesus to life. Thank you Dr. Brown, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Diana Bricker, Mrs. Fran DiBetta and all the parents who made this possible. 6 ST. JOAN OF ARC APRIL 8

7 SAVE THE DATE: DECEMBER 7, 2018 FROM THE SJA MARRIAGE MINISTRY DIRECTOR Originally Published on Page 7 of "Living Together and Christian Commitment, A Reflection for Engaged Couples who are living together," by James Healy, PH.D Some couples believe that nothing will change after they marry. However, many find that their relationship does change in unexpected ways. For instance, by its very nature, one thing that cannot be practiced in cohabitation is a permanent commitment. The security of a public commitment means that one or both partners may be more bold in bringing up their expectations, desires, or concerns about the relationship after they marry than before. Then again, marriage (especially with children) often moves us in unexpected ways toward more traditional sex roles, and this can be very threatening to couples who hope for more freedom. It is important to remember that married couples regularly go through times of challenge that open them to new growth. Cohabiting couples do not avoid these cycles through having cohabited, and should not be overly alarmed when they occur. Cohabiting couples should expect some turbulence in their relationship after marriage, and should search for support among other couples who value marriage and its long-term benefits. What does the Catholic Church offer cohabiting couples? The Catholic community believes that persons who give themselves sexually to each other are offering not just an action, but the totality of their very selves. Ultimately, their dignity and honor as human persons can only be protected in a relationship that intends to be permanent, faithful, and open to life. Therefore, the Catholic Church calls couples into relationships that are a) lifelong, not by dint of a vow said on one day and then taken for granted, but a promise to reaffirm daily our commitment to each other through the way we live. The sacrament is more one of Christian marrying than one of Christian marriage. b) faithful, not just sexually, but in every aspect of life- our time, our attention, our finances, our future plans. c) open to life, not only open to children, but caring in some way for all those who come into our life. Our children are simply the guests who stay the longest. Rosario Gonzales SJA Marriage Ministry Director APRIL 8 ST. JOAN OF ARC 7

11 ST. JOAN OF ARC'S ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT There was lots of fun to be had at St. Joan of Arc's Annual Easter Egg Hunt! Children were visited by the Easter Bunny and had the opportunity to hunt for eggs on the athletic field. Inside the gym, there were many exciting games to play, such as ring toss, egg race, and pin the tail on the bunny. Everyone enjoyed pizza inside the gazebo and made their own bunny trail mixes, iced and decorated cookies, and made great pictures at the coloring station. APRIL 8 ST. JOAN OF ARC 11

13 ADULT FAITH FORMATION CORNER LIFE REBORN By Mary Katharine Deeley In the first few days after our first child was born, I wasn t conscious of time. I d sit still and look at this miracle of life, knowing that I loved her with all my heart and that our lives would never be the same. I d get to the end of the day and wonder where the time had gone. And when she was married last year, I remembered those days like they were yesterday. Something like that is happening now, but the first week of Easter is more than a recollection of the empty tomb. Each day s Gospel reading refers to appearances of the risen Christ to his disciples. In this way we mark the new creation brought about by Christ s resurrection. For many of us, the week was another round of work or school. Our busyness might have kept us from giving much thought to the feast we just celebrated. But in our spiritual lives, time has stood still for a little while so we might ponder this miracle of life. It s a reminder that we re born new in this moment, an invitation to savor the experience and allow ourselves to be changed by it. In today s reading, St. Paul gives us a glimpse of what life reborn looked like for the new Christian community. There was unity of heart and mind and generosity toward those who were in need. After the resurrection, their lives would never be the same. The Church takes its time with Easter so that, no matter how old we get, we ll remember it like it was yesterday and live accordingly. GOD S EXTRAVAGANT MERCY By Bishop Robert F. Morneau There is a scene in Shakespeare s Hamlet that addresses forgiveness. The king, Claudius, has murdered his brother, married his brother s widow, and stolen the crown. In his soliloquy, Claudius reveals what is transpiring in his tortured soul. The king knows that his fault is past but prayer does not serve him well since the effects of his crime the stealing of the crown, the sinful fulfillment of his ambition, and his adulterous relationship with the queen all remain. He senses that his murder cannot be forgiven as long as the effects of the murder remain. Our faith tells us that God s mercy is always available through the salvation gained for us in Christ. We need but turn to God with sincere intent and resolve, confess our sins, and receive divine mercy. No one is excluded from this grace. God s will is that all be saved. What is blasphemous, what blocks God s extravagant mercy pouring into our souls is not any particular sin that is unforgivable. Rather, the blasphemy happens when we refuse to forgo the effects of our sins (power, pride, possessions) and are unwilling to reform our lives with a sincere purpose of amendment. It is not that sin is unforgivable, that God withholds divine mercy. Rather, it is an obstinate disposition that hardens the heart, preventing the rain of divine mercy from penetrating the soul. MERCY ACCEPTED, REJECTED In the Garden, Peter spoke words of betrayal, denying that he knew Jesus. Subsequently, Peter acknowledged his sin, wept bitterly, and was forgiven. With humility and courage, Peter faced his failure. We know the rest of the story. For just thirty pieces of silver Judas also betrayed his master. Unable or unwilling to accept Jesus merciful gaze, this disciple took his own life. Mercy was afforded to both; it was accepted by only one. In some way Judas got stuck in himself and could not believe that he still retained infinite human worth. His sin shattered his sense of dignity and led to self-disdain. Saint Augustine, in speaking of sin, describes it as curvatus in se, that is, turned in on oneself. Sin does exactly that. It refuses to breathe the fresh air of God s mercy. It suffocates us, cutting us off from God and others. There is a disconnect, a partial or total SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY) severing of the branch from the vine of God s life. Jesus came precisely to reconcile us to God, to one another, and to ourselves. APPROPRIATING GOD S MESSAGE In another Shakespearean play, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo sees his beloved at some distance and says to himself: O it is my love. O that she knew she were. Juliet doesn t know it! God says to us, his beloved daughters and sons: O you are my love. Would that you knew you were! Could the unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit be our refusal, upon hearing the message of God s love in Jesus, to appropriate this message and let it shape our lives? Joseph Campbell once suggested that the unpardonable sin was the sin of inadvertence, of not being alert, not quite awake. The spiritual life is about staying awake to the infinite love and mercy of God given us in Jesus. Though Shakespeare as a dramatist is not a religious writer, his plays provide clues for understanding the great mysteries of sin and forgiveness. For these clues, we should be grateful Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO Scripture quotations in this publication are from New American Bible, revised edition, 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, DC. Christine Appleman TO LEAVE A LEGACY FOR ST. JOAN OF ARC STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property. STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you d like to make. 1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.) A bequest can be made in a number of ways: A specific dollar amount. Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property. Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan. A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met. An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc. STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney. An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits. As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes. STEP 4 Contact us. We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings.
