In doing this he is telling his followers to go and follow this man, he is the one that we have been waiting for, that He is in fact the Son of God. John realizes that the fulfillment of his mission has come to fruition, and now that Jesus has begun His public life it is time for John to fade into the background and promote the teachings of Jesus. In this Gospel we are also being told the same exact thing, that this Jesus is the one whom we are to follow, to pay attention to, and to come to know. The only problem that we have is that Jesus lived back in the time of John the Baptist and we do not have the walking, talking Son of God among us today. Some people say that this is what leads them to not believe in the divinity of Jesus. They claim that if Jesus were really the Son of God then He should appear to them in the here and now and then they would believe. God, however, does not work that way. God always allows us to come to Him by our own free will, not forcing Himself upon us through miraculous revelations, but rather revealing Himself in more subtle but very concrete ways, through the Gospel, through His Church and through one another. God does this so that we may freely choose to love Him and follow in The Way, because without choice there could be no love. Our response to Jesus and the way that we behave with regards to His message is crucial for our relationship with God. It is through participation in the Sacraments and studying the Word of God that we can grow in our knowledge and love of our Creator and thereby securing that for which we were created, our eternal life in heaven. - Deacon Bill Watzek Baptisms Every 1st & 3rd Sunday (English): 1:30pm 3rd Saturday (Spanish): 12 noon Confessions Saturday: 3:00-4:00pm Sunday: 5:50-6:20pm (Spanish & English) Confessions by appointment during office hours JANUARY 14, 2018 YOUR CARING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN JANUARY DOWNTOWN 14 ST. 2 WHY ARE WE PARISHIONERS AT ST. JOAN OF ARC? "In 1990 I became a Catholic in large part due to the love and acceptance I felt at our St. Joan of Arc Church. When I met people at church, I felt kindness, caring and community. The people I met seemed humble and non-judgmental. I was treated as an equal in a Bible Study class despite my being non-catholic. On a walk with a friend one day, I referred to St. Joan as my church. I joined RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) where I had my questions answered and was confirmed several months later. I love our church and continue to enjoy learning about Catholicism, now, at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach where I attend classes with many future priests and deacons." We extend a warm WELCOME to all newcomers and visitors! If you are a new member of our St. Joan of Arc Parish Family or are visiting us for the first time, be sure to stop-by our Parish Office. There, a member of our parish leadership team will be happy to inform you about our parish life, ministries, organizations, and service opportunities. We look forward to meeting you! 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE MINISTRY AS COMPLETION OF OUR SPIRITUALITY In this New Year, whenever we pray, we might begin with a spiritual circle of reading Sacred Scripture, quietly reflecting upon the meaning of the scripture text for each one of us uniquely--"what does this mean for me?," responding personally in an intimate dialogue with God, finally, putting the words of Sacred Scripture into action in some way. The final phase of the prayer period brings the prayer to a moment of completion through a ministry involvement that takes us out of ourselves and connects us with our neighbor. Ministry is anchored and grows out of our spirituality and prayer. Parishes of today are incredibly dependent on the active ministerial participation and dedication of parishioners. In the 1950's this would be unthinkable. More often than not ministry was then the realm of priests and nuns and perhaps a few devout lay persons. Our parish life at Saint Joan of Arc offers over fifty different opportunities for ministry discipleship: Worship and Spirituality ministries, social ministries, educational and faith formation ministries, administration oversight ministries, outreach and charitable ministries are only some of our possibilities. All of them bring to a circle of completion our spiritual lives. It is often said that volunteerism is its own reward. I agree with this proverb based upon my own experience and that of others. Whenever we extend ourselves in active care and concern for our neighbor we are enriched on many levels. We make new friends, help to make an important difference in other people's lives and experience deep satisfaction at the enlargement of our hearts and energies. I love the parable of the Good Samaritan because it summarizes Jesus' teaching on ministry. In response to the question "Who is my neighbor? Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan who stopped and helped an injured man while other more "respectable" people walked right by him. Jesus said of the Good Samaritan, "Go and do Likewise." We are to move from disengaged bystander to active helper for those in need. All of our ministries at Saint Joan of Arc in some way or another do just that. I would like to invite all parishioners to come to our Ministry Fair and Ice Cream Social in Mercy Center this Sunday after the10:45 Mass. Representatives from our ministries will be present to answer questions and to recruit new volunteers. A good time will be had by all in the service of the great good of parish volunteerism ministry. We know that we will receive much more than we give and will grow our disciple hearts. We will also enjoy ice-cream! - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw JANUARY 14 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

5 FROM THE SJA SCHOOL PRINCIPAL ROTATION STATIONS IN THE ST. JOAN CLASSROOM What is blended learning? According to edglossary.org, the term blended learning is generally applied to the practice of using both online and in-person learning experiences when teaching students. For example, blended learning may be provided in an existing school by a few teachers or it may be the dominant learning-delivery model around which a school s academic program is designed. Online learning may be a minor component part of a classroom-based course, or video-recorded lectures, live video and text chats, and other digitally enabled learning activities may be a student s primary instructional interactions with a teacher. In some cases, students may work independently on online lessons, projects, and assignments at home or elsewhere, only periodically meeting with teachers to review their learning progress, discuss their work, ask questions, or receive assistance with difficult concepts. Again, the potential variations are numerous. At St. Joan of Arc School the blended learning model that numerous faculty members are striving to administer is a station rotation in order to better personalize instruction, provide enrichment, exploration, adaptive student learning, opportunities for pursuit of interests, and optimized skill practice. The rationale for this push is that according to Bloom, 1984, tutorial learning achievement yields much greater achievement than in a conventional classroom or even mastery learning program. Via blended learning, the teacher is considered the coach. There are three main stations: online, a teacher lead group, and a collaborative activity station (students work with each other and each student is assigned a specific role). In classes with younger students, there often is an additional floating adult assisting in the process. What requires a lot of preparation on the teachers and their expertise is coaching, data reflection (IOWA, MAP, STAR), Socratic dialogue, debate, conversation and correction, and guiding students to discover the connections to other content knowledge. Also, the online component requires effective differentiated instruction. The teacher assigns the appropriate online level and activity per child. This academic school year, we have made a concerted effort to have more student individual goal setting in reading and in math starting in 4th grade (student/ teacher data chats ) as well as more teacher/ parent conferences. For example, at our January 2018 teacher workday, we invited middle school parents and students to come to the Sports Arena to individually meet with our faculty. Lastly, as part of our Florida Catholic Conference reaccreditation process, we are excited to share that the St. Joan of Arc Team is working on getting our FCC STREAM Certification (Florida Catholic Conference Science Technology, Reading Engineering, Arts, and Math). St. Joan educators must be able to demonstrate at all grade levels the integration of all these subjects through interdisciplinary project-based and inquiry-based learning. Both the teachers and the students make evident the authentic use of technology as an integral part of learning and teaching as well as the use of data to make informed instructional decisions. 12 BRINGING HOME THE WORD DRAWN TOWARD CHRIST By Mary Katharine Deeley When I started in campus ministry, I was fortunate to meet a wonderful priest who had worked with college students for many years. I watched him carefully on Sundays and at student gatherings, picking up valuable information about how to talk to students, conduct myself professionally, and bring out the best in others and in myself. Over the years we worked together, I observed many campus ministers all age ranges, lay and ordained seeking him out for advice and counsel. I referred more than a few. I also enjoyed our conversations and nearly always left our meetings with more wisdom than when I started. I wonder what Andrew and the other disciples thought when John called Jesus the Lamb of God. Whatever it was, they must have seen in Jesus someone who could answer their questions or give them something they were lacking. Maybe they saw a person their teacher admired and decided to seek his wisdom for themselves. Whatever it was, something compelled them to follow Jesus, and Jesus own invitation to come and see whetted their curiosity and desire even more. Today we might call that the impulse of the Spirit, who draws us to Christ even when we re not sure why. The challenge for us is to have the courage to follow Jesus, ask where he s staying, and walk with him even if we can t see where it will lead us. Our desire to stay with the Lord is, in itself, our comfort and our joy. SUNDAY READINGS 1 Samuel 3:3b 10, 19 The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, Here I am. 1 Corinthians 6:13c 15a, The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body. JOAN OF ARC JANUARY 14 Lord, draw me close to your heart that I may come to know and love you more deeply. From Peaceful Meditations for Every Day in Ordinary Time, Rev. Warren J. Savage and Mary Ann McSweeny JANUARY 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME BECOMING PEOPLE OF SEXUAL INTEGRITY By Jim and Susan Vogt The U.S. statistics on premarital sex (81 to 95 percent), marital infidelity (15 to 80 percent, studies vary widely) and births to single mothers (40 percent) are open to interpretation. They might reflect a loss of morality or be manifestations of searching for how to live as sexual beings. These numbers and their interpretations can disturb Catholics, who have been taught that sex outside of marriage is wrong. A committed Christian can feel like an alien in a foreign land. Is fidelity in marriage passé? Is chastity a virtue only for priests and vowed religious? In its fullest sense, chastity applies to everyone not just those who take a vow of chastity since it means using one s sexuality according to one s state in life. The Church calls single people to chastity because human sexual expression carries with it the power of intimate union and of creating new life. It s nothing to take lightly. If a man and woman aren t committed to one another, the bond created by their sexual union isn t a total gift of self and is thus conditional. How does a faithful Catholic stay faithful in a culture that seems to minimize or ignore the importance of keeping the sexual expression of love within marriage? One approach is to rail against those who engage in sex outside of marriage. But that won t change the reality that there will always will be those who can t connect the dots between sexual intercourse and marriage. We can t control another s behavior. We can only love the person. Does the Church have a message for spouses who are trying to live with sexual integrity? Is it just a matter of not having sexual affairs? After years of working with engaged and married couples, we ve learned that infidelity usually doesn t start with sex. It starts with not paying attention or paying too much attention to someone or something else. Infidelity may start as an innocent office friendship. It may be fueled by boredom with a spouse. Children naturally divert energy from marriages. But adultery also comes in nonhuman forms. The mistress might be excessive dedication to one s job. Technology becomes the other woman when a spouse spends hours on the Internet. It might not be pornography, but it s still taking the place of time with one s spouse. Chastity in marriage isn t only about what a couple shouldn t do, but also about what they should do. Theology of the Body emphasizes that our God-given gift of sexuality requires a total giving of self to the other. This sacrificial love means keeping love alive through words and deeds: letting my husband have his way even if I think my way is better or giving up a favorite TV program because my wife wants to talk. It also includes making time to nurture romance so that one s marriage doesn t drift toward substitute loves. Focusing on the positive qualities of your spouse builds the relationship. It may sound flip, but a compliment a day keeps divorce away. If you re a parent of a teen or young adult, your concern may be the sexual mores of the younger generation. With premarital sex and cohabitation becoming normative, what s a parent to say? Not much. The time for sharing your values is before they reach the age for these choices. After that, you continue to model wholesome relationships, pray for them, celebrate with them if a relationship grows into a permanent commitment, and stand by to help pick up the pieces if it doesn t. The bottom line? Are your human relationships, whether or not they involve sexual expression, life-giving and generous? What must you do to make them so?

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you d like to make. 1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.) A bequest can be made in a number of ways: A specific dollar amount. Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney. An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits. As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes. STEP 4 Contact us. We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.) Feliz Domingo Diacono Edgar Caceres.
