A key step in pursuing wisdom is pursuing knowledge. The more information we have about everything (God, the world, our role in the world, etc.) the better equipped we are to determine what are the right choices to make in life. As the first reading poetically acknowledges, wisdom can nourish us in a way that allows us to be at peace with the decisions we make. Some of the knowledge/wisdom most of you already have is the recognition that merely having information is not enough. We are called to incorporate the knowledge to the various circumstances of life gained through the God-given (but sadly under-utilized) gift of common sense. Yes there are the significant decisions we make (which vocation we chose, where we go for advanced studies, what career path, etc.) Yet throughout each day we make so many choices without even thinking about them. And the choices we make on the seemingly-insignificant decisions of our lives directly and indirectly influence the larger choices. For example, if we justify making the wrong decisions thinking, it s only a tiny sliver of my life the consequences of those decisions can substantially cloud our judgment on the greater life-decisions (among other consequences; but the opposite is just as applicable the more we act wisely the better we ll know how to act in the future). The more we can prayerfully discern with common-sense upon all the decisions of life, the more frequently our lives will be spared the sharp pain of regret, and the more easily we ll be able to discern future consequences of our choices how they contribute to our relationships, how they facilitate our journey in life, how they give the peace of mind of knowing that we are striving to live the best way we can all with God s help!! 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE THE GIFT AND RESPONSIBILITY OF FORMING OUR CHILDREN IN THE FAITH WHAT A BLESSING! Please check out this bulletin for pictures and faith formation articles. What an incredible gift and blessing our children are to us as the Saint Joan of Arc parish family. I am filled with joy when I welcome them before and after Mass and see the love that they receive from their parents and give back in return. It is great to hear a baby singing or to bless them when they run up to receive their special blessing. It is also very uplifting to visit our school and our religious education classes and observe the faith being passed on with such commitment and dedication. Because our children are our most precious gifts, it is also true that the spiritual dimension of their young lives needs to be attended to with great care. As parents and as religious educators, it is critical that we explain in understandable ways the truths of our faith. It is also important that we pass on in our homes the devotion to Mary, the Saints and other culturally specific spiritual practices, for example, the Colombian and Filipino practices of family novenas. If from our earliest days, we are surrounded by family-prayer and devotional practices, as we mature, they grow with us and become even more significant. The ancient practice of praying at the beginning and at the end of each day teaches our children that their lives and destinies are God s gifts to them and that God accompanies them throughout the entirety of their lives. Each moment of their lives, whether awake or asleep is watched over by their loving Father. Another natural opportunity to pass on our faith is the family habit of praying before and after meals. I realized that a meal with all family members present is a miracle today, but, as often as possible, God should be thanked for the gift of life and nourishment. Those responsible for the cooking should also be mentioned with gratefulness. Celebrating birthdays is also a great way of recognizing the blessing that each child is to your family. It is a time for praising and recognizing each child s unique characteristics as the real purpose of birthday parties and gifts. The presence that each child is to the family is the real birthday present. Our school and religious education programs have recently started up again. It is an appropriate time for mothers and fathers to prayerfully consider how you will pass on your faith this year. What spiritual practices will be celebrated in your home? When will the Bible be read? How will you teach the Gospel values of unconditional love, forgiveness, generosity, truthfulness, gentleness, mutual respect, rights and responsibilities? It goes without saying that the teaching needs to be done with words and living example. Whatever successes are achieved in passing on of our faith in schools and classrooms, nothing is as important as the faith formation that occurs in the domestic churches of our parish families. I want to assure all parents of our prayers and support as you live out your vocation of Christian parenting during this upcoming year. Greeting you and your children at our church doors each Sunday is the high point of my week. As Jesus said, Let the little children come unto me, for to just such as these belongs the Kingdom of Heaven, Please let Jesus welcome them, nurture them and bless them each Sunday. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw AUGUST 26 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

5 S FROM THE SJA PARISH MINISTRIES & ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR Andrea Lewin SJA Parish Ministries & Activities Director ummer is almost over and we are back to our daily routines. We enjoyed our time bonding with our beloved ones in slower pace summer lifestyle, but we might be still unsatisfied. Certainly, we can find happiness in this world. Marriage, the birth of a child, a fulfilling job, learning something new, a nice vacation these are all paths that can bring us happiness. But even with all of these paths, we can still long for something more, and that longing keeps us unfulfilled. We sense that there is more to life. Something inside us tells us that our hearts will remain restless until we find our rest in God, as St. Augustine has said. Be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18) The second reading for this Sunday mass give us the chance to test ourselves and see how close we remained to our Lord during this Summer. Fill in the blank identify five important transitions in this passage: 1. From foolish to w _ (verse 15) 2. From ignorant to understanding the w _ of the Lord (verse 17) 3. From drunk on wine to being f _ with the Spirit (verse 18) 4. Addressing one another in p _, h, and spiritual s (verse 19) 5. Giving t _ always for everything (verse 20) Paul said, Be filled with the Spirit, and he told us how: 1. Read one psalm and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with God s grace and wisdom. Try to sense what he is saying to you: perhaps a new insight, perhaps a sense of encouragement, perhaps guidance on how to act at work today. 2. Thank Jesus for all of your blessings. 3. Address every person you meet today with kindness and love, generosity and patience. Make this your spiritual song to them. Jesus is knocking at the door of our hearts and asking us to open ourselves up more fully to him and his revelation (Revelation 3:20). God reveals himself to us, it s more than data or information. He doesn t just tell us about himself or about Church doctrine. His revelation is also a personal experience in our hearts. It s an unveiling of his life and his love in a way that changes us and helps us become more like him. God speaks to us in creation, Scripture, and Tradition we can receive this grace of revelation through a divine exchange between God and us. God pours out grace and blessings in exchange for the time we spend coming to him in prayer or caring for the people in our lives A divine exchange Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20) This is probably one of the most important and dramatic revelations God has given us: Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, wants to enter our lives and take an active role in them. He is knocking at the door of our hearts, eager for us to invite him in. When we open the door and invite Jesus in, a divine exchange happens. Jesus takes our meager efforts, our weak faith, our attempts at obedience, and he exchanges them with a sixty- and ninetyfold blessing. We can also see this divine exchange at the Last Supper, Jesus told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would guide them into all truth.... He will take from what is mine and declare it to you (John 16:13, 15). He also promised that when this happened, they would be filled with joy (16:22). The message couldn t be clearer: God wants to reveal himself to us. We can get distracted and forget to open our eyes to the Lord. In my own life, I have found that when I open the door to Jesus, my faith comes alive. The truly good news of the gospel, is that I can know him personally and intimately as I set aside time for him. I can have a greater conviction about who I am as a child of God. The Holy Spirit wants to open your eyes as well, whether you are the holiest person on earth or the weakest member of your parish. Pope Francis said: God gave us the Holy Spirit so we can live as His children, and we see in His Words and in His Commandments, not rules and prohibitions that make us slaves, but His fatherly love, that gives us life, liberty and illuminates our walk. So let s pray that the Holy Spirit will give all of us a spirit of wisdom and revelation (Ephesians 1:17). Let s pray that the eyes of our hearts will be enlightened, so that we can be more like him and be ready for his call. Let s make a difference GO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!! AUGUST 26 ST. JOAN OF ARC 5

10 D During the past years, our Lady, embraced us all when the greater Saint Joan of Arc community celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Charity Patroness of Cuba. Parishioners joined in a procession, a Mass, and a social gathering in Mercy Center where we enjoyed refreshments and each other s company. Who else but a mother could bring out the best in each one of us and ignite the flame of our love that allows us to see beyond races, to hear beyond languages to find in each other our brothers and sisters in Christ? This year we will celebrate Her Feast under the title of Caridad del Cobre (our Lady of Charity) on September 9 with a procession starting at 6:00pm followed by a Bilingual Mass at 6:30pm and refreshments immediately after the Mass. Everyone is invited to participate in this joyful parish gathering. Please call Constanza at or Andrea at for more information. O Join the Altar Society! This is a great way to give a small amount of time in return for truly great rewards. For more information please contact: Rosario Gonzales (561) Deacon Bill Watzek (562) Bible Study Join us on Thursday mornings for an eight week Bible study on the book of First Corinthians. The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today as Christians. With divisions, immorality, persecution, and other trials of the faithful, the message of St. Paul to the Corinthians is a much-needed message for our own times. First Corinthians: The Church and the Christian Community explores the key elements that the apostle Paul introduced to a new and growing Church. St. Paul taught the Corinthians about the nature of grace and the Church as the Body of Christ. In addition, he introduced the Corinthian Christians to the most powerful gift of all, the Eucharist. Classes will meet at The Ark house (across the church parking lot) from 9:30-11:00am beginning on September 6th. 12 OUR ADULT FAITH FORMATION CORNER TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME CHRIST, OUR SPIRITUAL FOOD By Mary Katharine Deeley I have a clear memory of leaning over to the classmate in the next row and complaining about an assignment we had just been given. I wasn t the only one. Throughout the classroom, pairs of heads came together in a wave of rolling eyes and muttered remarks. I suppose we thought it went unnoticed. Is there anything you would like to share with the rest of the class? the teacher asked. No, thank you, was the general response. We were a little embarrassed at having been found out. That long-ago recollection surfaced as I read that the crowd murmured when Jesus said that he was the bread that came down from heaven. The word is also used of the Israelites who murmured about their hunger in the desert. Jesus calls them out by answering the question they thought he didn t hear. When he explains that he is greater than the manna that kept them alive in the desert, they can t believe their ears. They couldn t see that Jesus was far more than they understood him to be and they did not have faith in him because of that. Has there ever been a time when you have murmured to yourself or someone else about God? Maybe God called you to ministry and you didn t believe him. Maybe he asked you to give up something and you complained like I did in that class of years past. Maybe you think God has been unfair to you. Save you breath; God hears you. Instead, go to him. Pour out your questions and fears and, with an open and willing heart, listen to the promise of life he alone can give you. + RESPECTING ALL LIFE By John Feister You shall not kill (Exodus 20:13). I ve stood as an adult at life s portals several times: once each at the birth of my sons, watching, encouraging, witnessing; again at the bedside of my mother as she passed into life hereafter. All were transition times: My sons surely were alive well before their birthdays; most parents can tell you that there are plenty of signs of life from the outset. At the other portal, I witnessed my mother s passing with awe as she continued her journey to life everlasting. When I consider those times, I am reminded of Jesus words in John s Gospel: I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly (10:10). That positive promise of life is how I approach the Fifth Commandment, You shall not kill. It is certainly a prohibition, but like the other commandments, it is a command that we live to the fullest the life that God gives us. We have a sad history of ignoring the promise of life from the earliest times the story of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4:8 12) tells us that. But one could argue that respect for life never has been a more urgent issue than it is today. In his encyclical The Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae), St. John Paul II named our culture s lack of respect for life as one of the signs of our times. When we talk of living abundantly, the deepest meaning of You shall not kill, we re talking about birth and natural death, but we re talking about much more. We re talking about openly and actively opposing abortion, but also talking about fighting those other things that take life away. Global Solidarity Anyone who has worked in the Third World or among the poor in our United States has witnessed how poverty takes away life and how our culture can strip human dignity, that is, take away respect for life by allowing or even causing poverty. Being prolife, that is, against death, includes standing in solidarity with those who are powerless, from womb to tomb. It is among the brightest witnesses of the Church that acts of solidarity are everywhere in the good works of people building houses, working at soup kitchens, staffing pregnancy centers, opposing the death penalty, and advocating just laws, for example. All of these honor the Fifth Commandment. The culture of death as John Paul called it, dishonors God. Taking of life medically by euthanasia, for example, puts us in the driver s seat reserved for God. God s command, You shall not kill, also gives us a grave responsibility to avoid war. Catholics believe, of course, that there are times of legitimate self-defense, when killing is unavoidable and ethical. But nations, including our own, often cut a broader swath, resorting to war when war is unjustified. Words of Life It is the teachers of the Church, the bishops, who have framed the challenge of the Fifth Commandment so effectively. An American, the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin, introduced the concept of a consistent ethic of life as a way to tie together all of the life issues that challenge us today. Jesus taught us that all of the commandments are about being in right relationship with God and neighbor (Matthew 22:34-40). In an age where we can assert all manner of new and wonderful creativity and control over creation, the Fifth Commandment reminds us of the only true author: It is God, the giver of life, who calls us to have life, and have it more abundantly Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO Scripture quotations in this publication are from New American Bible, revised edition, 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, DC. Do I share Christ s message of love with others? A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS Amid the din of so many voices, the Lord asks us to distinguish between what is from him and what is from the false spirit.to distinguish the word of wisdom that God speaks to us each day from the shouting of those who seek in God s name to frighten, to nourish division and fear. Jubilee for socially excluded people, November 13, 2016 SUNDAY READINGS: Proverbs 9:1 6 [Wisdom says,] To any who lack sense I say, Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed! Christine Appleman TO LEAVE A LEGACY FOR ST. JOAN OF ARC STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property. STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you d like to make. 1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.) A bequest can be made in a number of ways: A specific dollar amount. Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property. Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan. A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met. An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc. STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney. An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits. As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes. STEP 4 Contact us. We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.) Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) or horton_wendy@stjoan.org. AUGUST 26 ST. JOAN OF ARC 13
