TO OUR FRIENDS AT TEMPLE BETH EL Be sure of our prayers and support for you during this difficult time of bereavement and loss as a result of the Pittsburgh Temple massacre. As Christians we abhor this terrorist and anti-semitic act of killing innocent religious worshipers. We must all work to create a different culture in our land that respects human life and religious freedom. May God hold you, our brothers and sisters of Temple Beth El, in His loving embrace. Shalom. Your Brothers and Sisters of Saint Joan of Arc WISH LIST: SUPPORT CATHOLIC EDUCATION If you would like to support Catholic Education, your donation towards the next school year s tuition costs will help a family who otherwise would not be able to send their child to our school. 3 Christian Response to a Religious based Massacre PASTOR S MESSAGE This week we have all had to pray and reflect upon the massacre of Jewish worshipers in Pittsburgh. As Christians, we abhor such anti-semitic terrorism and its causes. We know that historically Christians have discriminated against and persecuted Jewish people and that we have a lot to be sorrowful for and to repent for. Only in the teachings of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s and 1970s, have we as a church clearly condemned antisemitism and tried to foster understanding and fellowship with our Jewish brothers and sisters the Children of Abraham. It is quite a challenge to undo thousands of years of prejudice, caricature and persecution but we must actively try our best. Our Interfaith celebration every year with Temple Beth El is a solid step toward mutual understanding and respect. The active involvement of the children of both communities gives hope that the future can be different than the sins of the past. It is also incumbent upon us to actively disassociate ourselves from disrespectful and cruel antisemitic jokes and all other forms of hate speech that contribute to violence and terrorism. Only if we really love across religious boundaries and prejudiced beliefs can hatred be overcome. Antisemitic violence in our country has increased by 300% over the past few years and is living proof that when it is unchecked by the actions of people of good will that it increases like a horrible plague in our midst. On behalf of all of us at Saint Joan of Arc, I have shared our love and prayers and solidarity with Rabbi Dan Levin and the members of Temple Beth El. Our relationship is concrete witness that an alternative way can be envisioned and lived. Msgr. Michael D. McGraw 31st Sunday Ordinary Time CLERGY DEVOTION The scribe who asks Jesus the question in the Gospel is obviously a good man who is sincerely seeking the truth. Jesus sees in this man not just a scribe but a person who is trying to make his life in union with the will of God. Jesus informs the man that the whole law can be summed up in two commandments: love of God and love of neighbor. Note that the kind of love spoken of here is freely chosen and freely given, this is not the kind of love that is emotional but a love that is the giving of one s self freely for the other without thought of return. The relationship that we have with God, in the view of Christ, should be the most important thing in our lives. When we think back on our last few days or even weeks, how many of us can say that our priority during this time was our relation-ship with God? Jesus does, however, pair the command to love God with that of the love of neighbor. The implication of this aspect of the interrelatedness between the love of God and the love of neighbor gives us great hope. It seems that our love of God expresses itself in the love that we show to our neighbor who is our brethren in the creation of God. This situation enables us to demonstrate our love of God in every act of kindness and charity that we show anyone who we meet on a day to day and week to week basis. So while we may find it difficult to keep God in mind throughout the course of the whole day, we do have His creation before us constantly and we can act out of love to all humanity thereby demonstrating our love for our mutual Creator.
