Jesus rebukes Peter by saying, You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. Indeed, Peter has to learn to think differently, and he will have to learn to think like Jesus did. But how does one begin to think differently? We understand Jesus to say that it is learning by doing; For whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. Jesus is turning things on its head, and He seems to suggest that one becomes a disciple not by thinking discipleship but by doing discipleship. Perhaps, this is what St. James means in today s second reading when he says, What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? And then he concludes, So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Therefore, if Descartes said, I think therefore I am, Jesus and St. James are telling us, I do therefore I am. Christianity is a doing. Jesus has just told His disciples for the first time that His destiny is death at the hands of the religious authorities. Can you imagine the shock of the disciples? They had abandoned everything to follow Jesus, and their intention in following Jesus was to gain something. And just when there was no turning back, Jesus not only tells them that He will be killed, but also tells them that their gain too lies in self-denial. If they must save their lives they must lose them. Very soon after this teaching on discipleship, Jesus would do exactly what He taught. He would deny His own self, be submissive to His Father s will and lose His life on The Cross. Today, instead of Jesus s question, Who do you say that I am? what if the question was, Who do you say you are? How do we think about ourselves? If you and I say that we are Christians, we are His disciples, then, like Jesus, our actions must back it up. We simply have to take up the cross, deny ourselves and follow Jesus! As St. James says, Faith without works is dead! So my dear brothers and sisters, the Eucharist we celebrate is an action. It is a doing and this doing does not end here. It must lead us to the world, and we therefore are ambassadors of Christ. Fr. Dominic Toan-Tran SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 YOUR CARING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN SEPTEMBER DOWNTOWN 16 ST. 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE Please check out this bulletin for pictures and faith formation articles. THE HEALING POWER OF CHRIST IN THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK One of the unique characteristics of Roman Catholicism is our Sacred Tradition of celebrating seven sacraments. They are often grouped into the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist), Sacraments of Healing (Penance and Anointing of the Sick), and the Sacraments of Commitment (Marriage and Holy Orders). This system of interrelated sacraments evolved over the first centuries of our Church's history and are all rooted in the life and ministry of Jesus. In fact, the truth of the sacraments is that they are all the words and actions of Christ expressed in and through the Church, the Body of Christ. Christ is the Celebrant of all of the sacraments and it is His saving presence and activity that makes them holy, transformational and efficacious. The Priest Celebrant acting in the person of Christ allows His presence to be visible and powerful for us. It is important to remember that because the sacraments are the words and actions of Christ expressed in and through the Church, His Body, they are always objectively speaking an occasion of grace (power, presence and life of God). Christ's offering of Himself as Savior and Lord is always present, always powerful. However, subjectively speaking, our faith, preparation and participation are also critical in determining what difference Christ's saving words and actions will make in our lives. The Anointing of the Sick traces its origin to the many times that Our Lord showed compassion, anointed, laid hands upon, prayed for and healed the sick during His Public Ministry. In fact, some of the most compelling encounters that occur in the Gospels involve Jesus healing the physically disabled and those struggling with physical or emotional illnesses. Often, Jesus would drive out demonic forces that bedeviled and kept people captive and suffering. His words of healing and compassion had such power as to transform and set people free not only from the power of sin but also from the power of sickness and disease. His command to His apostles and disciples was to imitate Him in their ministry to the sick and suffering, so our Church has always shown special love and care for the sick. Sacramental healing that may be spiritual, emotional or physical continues to be Christ's way of continuing His compassionate presence for all times. In our parish, the Anointing of the Sick has a very important place in pastoral care. The Sacrament has several important elements: prayer, imposition of hands on the person's forehead, anointing of the forehead and the hands, scripture readings and blessings. Sometimes the Anointing of the Sick is also accompanied by Penance and often with the reception of Holy Communion. This powerful combination of the words and actions of Christ strengthens the faith of the sick person and often is an occasion of physical healing as well. Church practice usually reserves the Anointing of the Sick to those who have a serious or protracted illness. The sacrament may be received more than once but a reasonable period of time between anointing is recommended. The Anointing of the Sick is such a saving encounter with Christ, that the sacrament itself accomplishes freeing form sin especially for those who are very sick or terminally ill. Because the Anointing of the Sick is best received while the person is alert and conscious so as to be able to actively participate, past practices when the sacrament was delayed until near death are discouraged today. It is an incredibly powerful experience for a sick person to be surrounded by loved ones, prayed for, read scripture, anointed, blessed and given Holy Communion. As is the case with all of the sacraments, the invisible love and power of God made visible in the words and actions of the Anointing of the Sick, make Christ as present and as real as He was in His earthly life. True to His promise, through the sacraments, Christ The Divine Physician, remains with us today and until the end of time. Msgr. Michael D. McGraw SEPTEMBER 16 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

5 FROM THE SJA CATHOLIC SCHOOL PRINCIPAL Mrs. Caroline Roberts SJA Catholic School Principal ST. JOAN OF ARC SCHOOL FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT - TECHNOLOGY Miss Christian, our Middle School STREAM Coordinator, facilitated our first Family Science Night on Friday, September 7 th. The Sports Arena buzzed with enthusiasm as the packed-filled room, ranging from Pre-K3 to 8 th grade students and their families, circulated to nine stations while enjoying pizza. Our middle school STREAM students proudly took charge as they chose which station they wanted to create and run for the event. Our evening showcasing our future leaders in action ended with a farewell prayer and our STREAM students thanking all our guests and volunteers. A special thanks to Ms. Vasile, our STREAM Parent Coordinator, who assisted in planning this educational and fun-filled evening! Station 1: Electronic Kit Cecilia H. & Maya M. Students were able to build a circuit to create various projects such as an alarm, a bell, and a fan. Our participants learned about electricity and circuits. Station 2: Dash (a coding robot) Freddy A. Students had to code something for Dash to do such as getting Dash to move toward a target. Station 3: BB8 (a coding robot) Ally R., Isabel M., & Brianna A. The goal was to get students to use more advanced coding and get BB8 to go through a maze. Station 4: Stop in Motion Alejandra P., Alessandra R., Ava R., Guillermo H., & Calleigh N. Students used play dough, animal figures, Legos, stones and hair gel to create their animations. Students would add a piece and take a picture. They repeated the cycle and created videos of moving snakes, spooky space aliens, boats, and much more. Station 5: 3D Printing Louis C. Louis demonstrated 3D Printing by showing some 3D objects ranging from nametags to hangtags. Our visitors were able to see the long process of creating a sign stating SJA s STREAM Go Gators. Station 6: 3D Printing Pens Isabel R, Luca Q., & Jackson B. Participants had the opportunity to use a 3D Pen. The pen doesn t get hot but the tip does get hot! Our students had downloaded templates for students to make glasses or the Eiffel Tower or they could create their own masterpiece. Jackson even made a 3D Pen birthday cake creation for Hudson. Station 7: Augmented and Virtual Reality Belen A. & Isabel C. Students used their phones to make it look like a dinosaur was running around in our Sports Arena. Station 8: Virtual Reality Katalina A., Celeste E., & Chris C. Children would put on the VR goggles and felt as if they were walking on the moon while seeing planets and stars. They also had the choice of pretending they were having the thrilling experience of riding a rollercoaster. Station 9: Coding using code.org Liliana C. & Gabby T. (St. Joan Graduates), & Alex B. Our students used computer code to move characters around the screen with our new donated laptops from our 2017 Gala & Auction Call to Heart. Our 3 rd grader Rocco was a pro using Coding with Minecraft to create a bridge for Steve to safely cross a river. SEPTEMBER 16 ST. JOAN OF ARC 5

12 OUR ADULT FAITH FORMATION CORNER DISCOVERING GIFTS FROM THE POOR By Mary Katharine Deeley The undergraduate students with whom I work are part of a generation whose opportunities to serve others began in grade school. Regardless of religious affiliation, culture, or race, these students raised money, contributed to canned food drives, helped at food pantries, or built houses with their classmates or fellow club members. Now in college, they have hundreds of opportunities to help those less fortunate who are sponsored by this nonreligious institution alone, let alone the many more offered by their respective religious houses and communities. For the most part, they serve willingly, even eagerly. But I find that few of them sit down to reflect on the good work they do. They rarely consider the call to solidarity with the poor or the command of Christ to love one another. They just have a felt sense that they should. For Catholics, as for all Christians, this felt sense has its roots in the faith we proclaim. If we truly believe that Christ is the Son of God and our Savior, our faith compels us to do what he did and to love as he loved. And it is more than that. Many people do service work because it s the right thing to do or because they want to give back. Those are good reasons. But we are called to be in a relationship of love with those we serve. We are challenged to see not only how we might serve them but to see the gifts they bring to us and how they shape our lives. We are called to accept them as our brothers and sisters. + TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME For Jesus this was not pie in the sky, by and by but an expression of his trust that God was faithful and that life extended beyond the realm of suffering and death. But there was another reason why Jesus blessed the poor. Those who are poor embody a truth that the rest of us often forget. The poor know what it means to be dependent on others. They know firsthand how fragile life can be, and have no illusion about being in control of their destiny. These realities apply not just to the poor but to everyone, yet having a lot of resources can sometimes delude us into thinking we are the masters of our own destiny and do not need others. Hard-won Wisdom The Bible appreciates the hard-won wisdom of the poor and knows too well the illusions that can befall the rich. That is another reason why Jesus blesses the poor paradoxically, their dependence and lack of autonomy reveal how everyone ultimately stands before God. It s hard to read anything nowadays without thinking of the terrible crises gripping the world. How should we read Jesus words about the poor now? Surely we are more aware of the growing chasm between the haves and have-nots that creates so much enmity and suffering. Jesus words and actions remind us that God cares for the poor and that as Christians we have an obligation to share our resources with those in need. All of us are poor before God and depend on God s abundant and gracious mercy for our lives. + THE WISDOM OF THE POOR By Donald Senior, CP Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours (Luke 6:20) Jesus words have punch, and this beatitude from Luke s Gospel is a good example. Unlike the version in Matthew 5:3 ( Blessed are the poor in spirit... ), in Luke s Gospel Jesus speaks directly to the poor, adding no qualifying phrase like in spirit. The people addressed here are the real poor, without resources, and truly needy. Why would Jesus tell poor people they are blessed? The unemployed, those threatened with eviction from their home, those with no food for their hungry children all might be enraged to hear someone say, Don t worry, you are blessed to be suffering. Advocates for the poor have long criticized those who pat poor people on the head and say, in effect, Hang on. God loves you and your reward in heaven will be great. Luke s Gospel makes clear that Jesus response to the poor was more than empty words. He was a healer who waded into the sea of broken humanity to heal bodies and spirits. He threw his lot with the poor, eating with them and welcoming them (15:1 2). Right after the beatitudes in Luke s Gospel come the woes. The first of these pulls no punches for those who had resources, yet refused to share them: Woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation (Luke 6:24). Jesus words were so provocative that he earned the anger of his opponents and put his life at risk. Ultimate Vindication So Jesus blessings to the poor were not idle words. He believed the poor are truly blessed because, despite everything, God cares for the poor and would ultimately vindicate their suffering. This is a fundamental conviction of the Bible. The God of Israel, the God of Jesus is on the side of the defenseless and those without resources. And while Jesus worked hard to alleviate suffering, he also firmly believed that those crushed by poverty would, in God s realm, be lifted up and filled with abundant life Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO Scripture quotations in this publication are from New American Bible, revised edition, 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, DC. When serving the less fortunate, am I willing to accept them as my brothers and sisters? A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS [Jesus said,] If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me. This is not an ornamental cross or an ideological cross, but it is the cross of life, the cross of one s duty, the cross of making sacrifices for others with love. Angelus, June 19, 2016 SUNDAY READINGS: Isaiah 50:5 9a The Lord God is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. James 2:14 18 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? Sgt. Douglas, PVT 1st Class Brendan Nestor, Sgt. Maj. John Hermeling, Capt. Christopher Allen & PFC Lee E. Palmer, David Schuler, Lance Corp., Lt. Ryan Appleman & his wife, Lt. Christine Appleman TO LEAVE A LEGACY FOR ST. JOAN OF ARC STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property. STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you d like to make. 1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.) A bequest can be made in a number of ways: A specific dollar amount. Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property. Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan. A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met. An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc. STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney. An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits. As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes. STEP 4 Contact us. We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.) Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) or horton_wendy@stjoan.org. 14 ST. JOAN OF ARC SEPTEMBER 16
