Dear brothers and sisters, as we move from one stage of life to another we are required at some point to let go of past ways and move on adopting newer ways of life. For example, as infants we had to be carried and fed, as children we had to hold our parents hands as we moved about. As teenagers we tended to be independent and yet we needed guidance and help sometimes. As adults we believe we can manage on our own. Nevertheless in our faith relationship we always need God and cannot manage without Him. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord; we are given a new presence of God within us. The first reading begins with the first chapter of the book of the Acts of the Apostles, that links the birth of the Church to the moment Jesus is taken up to heaven, reminding us that the Church itself is the new presence of Jesus in our midst. Indeed, the disciples believe that they can manage by themselves relying on their own resources, they are ordered not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for the promise of the Father. For us who are used to plan and action, one of the most difficult things is to wait for God to act. If we look at our own experiences, we are always making plans for ourselves and for how God should act in our lives. We even sometimes set deadlines for when God should act in our lives. Our plans usually spin around like: I, me, and myself while God still has more wonderful plans which will unfold if we wait on Him. In the Gospel we have Jesus bidding farewell to His disciples. He makes them understand the recent happenings and how they fit into the Father s plan. He opened their minds to understand the scriptures and told them to go into the whole world and proclaim the Good News to every creature. He told us that the Holy Spirit comes to give us the gift of understanding. The Word of God comes alive and makes sense when we can see how it connects to our life, when we see that it all fits in. However in order to understand we have to stay until we are filled, renewed by the Holy Spirit. Stay here in Jerusalem, in the Church, in your prayer until you are clothed with the power of the Holy Spirit. We may have wonderful ideas and plenty of experience and feel that we can manage with what we have. But if we are ready to wait, if we are ready to surrender to the Holy Spirit, something still more wonderful vwill happen in our life. The Gospel concludes with Jesus being taken up into heaven, He withdrew from His disciples sight and took His seat at the right hand of God. His mission was accomplished, now the mission of His disciples was about to begin. You and I are his disciples. Have you ever started the mission of Jesus by proclaiming the Gospel, by praying, serving, helping and loving your brothers and sisters yet? If you haven t started, when are you going to start? - Fr. Dominic Toan-Tran MAY 13, 2018 YOUR CARING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN DOWNTOWN MAY 13 ST. BOCA JOAN RATON OF ARC 1

3 PASTOR S MESSAGE FIRST HOLY COMMUNION AND MOTHER'S DAY 2018 Please check out this bulletin for pictures and faith formation articles. As we experience first hand, our church is a very busy place. Masses daily and many on weekends, Baptisms, Marriages, Funerals, Confirmations, Penance Celebrations, personal devotions and prayers and recently Communal Anointing of the Sick. All of these sacramental encounters with God strengthen us and help us to grow in holiness. Our church truly is the House of God and where the People of God encounter the "Living God" in ways that are transformational. This Saturday we will gather to celebrate our greatest sacrament, the Holy Eucharist, being received for the first time by 132 children of our parish families. This reception of the Holy Eucharist is a significant and joy filled occasion for all of our larger parish family and for the families of our children. We are "One Body In Christ". This is because the Holy Eucharist is both the center of our spiritual lives and the source of our unity with each other and with God. For over 2,000 years Catholics have gathered to be fed by Word and Sacrament and to be united in Christ as baptized members of His Body. As the Parable of the Vine and the Branches reminds us, united with Christ our Vine, we flourish, unattached to Him, we spiritually languish and die. The immense privilege of being united with Christ in the most intense way possible is what we are sharing with our children. Each family present for the First Holy Communion Mass will be passing on a priceless heritage and a most important family value and practice. Families pass on, form and support faith and, like Christ, each family is itself a spiritual vine supporting the faith of all family members especially our youngest. Participation in the Holy Eucharist should be understood as the most significant moment in the faith life of the family. It should be one that completes the fabric of family prayer, scripture reading, spiritual devotions, love and forgiveness and care for neighbor. The "First Communion" is just that, the first, in a lifetime of Holy Communions that will support and nourish our children spiritually throughout their lives. Families that together participate in the Holy Eucharist faithfully will be blessed with an abundance of love, peace and joy. As important as the food that we share around our tables, the Holy Eucharist keeps us spiritually alive and capable of living out our baptismal promises. We congratulate and are prayerfully united with all of our First Communicants and their families as they take this most important step in their spiritual development. This weekend we also celebrate Mother's Day and have an opportunity to recognize and thank all of the mothers of the parish for the immense gift they are to us. It goes without saying that most of us received our first religious instruction from our mothers. It was not so much teaching with words but by the example of their generous and self-sacrificing love. For all of these lessons of love, we thank our mothers and pray that God's most abundant blessings shower upon them and bless them. Mary, Our Blessed Mother, pray for us and keep us always in your love, especially our mothers. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw MAY 13 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

May we also take the time to recognize the sacrifices our mothers have made for us and recognize they answered "yes" to the vocation of motherhood. May we remember their special love, understanding and important role they play in our upbringing and in bringing us into the Church and helping us to grow closer to God. Please pray to the Mother of God, and for your mothers, grandmothers and godmothers. A BLESSING FOR MOTHERS FROM THE BOOK OF BLESSINGS Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ our Lord. A Happy and Blessed Mother s Day to all! 4 ST. 5 FROM THE SJA PARISH MINISTRIES & ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR May is here again along with the end of the School Year at Saint Joan of Arc School where we created many great memories, joyful and fun experiences sharing Parish Activities as a Spiritual Family. We are also having our First Communions and the world is celebrating Mother s Day on the day of the Ascension of The Lord, the same day that we are having the Crowning of Mary with Religious Education students. But most importantly for our faith, we are celebrating the month of our blessed mother and the world is joining us, honoring motherhood with Mother s day in the same month. As we are getting ready for our summer vacation we have more time to bond with our beloved ones with the slower pace of the summer lifestyle. Keep in mind to continue and persevere in our efforts to keep our families together and share in community as a Spiritual Family. Women and many men that nowadays for various circumstances have the important role as mother and have a big impact on how a Family stays together. We ve all heard the phrase families that pray together stay together. This simple statement is made manifest in the lives of many different kinds of families, that we have today... a married couple, a divorced or single parent with their children, a widow, a single parent with adopted or foster children. These are the families who regularly practice their faith together and seem to exude that wonderful sense of marital joy and family wholeness that all of us hope to achieve. Mary is an influential woman in this journey. Mary can comfort and guide anyone who asks her for help. We honor this special woman who was so instrumental in the life of Jesus and in the life of the Church this month. Pope Francis in his homily at Mass in St. Peter s Basilica on January 1, 2018, opened the year in the name of the Mother with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Mother of God is the most important title of Our Lady. The Holy Father reminded the congregation that the Church has declared that Mary is not only the Mother of Jesus but the Mother of God. That shows a magnificent truth that God took on our humanity. The word mother (mater) is related to the word matter, the Pope continued. In his Mother, the God of heaven, the infinite God, made himself small, he became matter, not only to be with us but also to be like us. This month is the in the name of the Mother. Mother of God is the most important title of Our Lady. But we might ask why we say Mother of God and not Mother of Jesus. In the past, some wanted to be content simply with the latter, but the Church has declared that Mary is the Mother of God. We should be grateful because these words contain a magnificent truth about God and about ourselves. From the moment that our Lord became incarnate in Mary, and for all time, he took on our humanity. There is no longer God without man; the flesh Jesus took from his Mother is our own, now and for all eternity. To call Mary the Mother of God reminds us of this: God is close to humanity, even as a child is close to the mother who bears him in her womb. The word mother (mater) is related to the word matter. In his Mother, the God of heaven, the infinite God, made himself small, he became matter, not only to be with us but also to be like us. This is the miracle, the great novelty! Man is no longer alone; no more an orphan, but forever a child. And we proclaim it by saying: Mother of God! Ours is the joy of knowing that our solitude has ended. It is the beauty of knowing that we are beloved children, of knowing that this childhood of ours can never be taken away from us. It is to see a reflection of ourselves in the frail and infant God resting in his mother s arms and to realize that humanity is precious and sacred to the Lord. Henceforth, to serve human life is to serve God. All life, from life in the mother s womb to that of the elderly, the suffering and the sick, and to that of the troublesome and even repellent, is to be welcomed, loved and helped. For Mary is exactly what God wants us to be, what he wants his Church to be: a Mother who is tender and lowly, poor in material goods and rich in love, free of sin and united to Jesus, keeping God in our hearts and our neighbor in our lives. To set out anew, let us look to our Mother. In her heart beats the heart of the Church. Devotion to Mary is not spiritual etiquette; it is a requirement of the Christian life. Looking to the Mother, we are asked to leave behind all sorts of useless baggage and to rediscover what really matters. The gift of the Mother, the gift of every mother and every woman, is most precious for the Church, for she too is mother and woman. While a man often abstracts, affirms and imposes ideas, a woman, a mother, knows how to keep, to put things together in her heart, to give life. If our faith is not to be reduced merely to an idea or a doctrine, all of us need a mother s heart, one which knows how to keep the tender love of God and to feel the heartbeat of all around us. May the Mother, God s finest human creation, guard and keep us this month, and bring the peace of her Son to our hearts and to our world. Bring your prayer requests and intercessions to Mary. Ask her to take your needs to her son, Jesus. After all, she has a lot of influence. Just remember how she helped a newly married couple at Cana (John 2:1-10)! Ask her to comfort you in times of trial. Our Lady of Sorrows knows what suffering is like firsthand. Invite her into your home, just as her cousin Elizabeth welcomed her. Know that her presence will be a blessing for you and your family. Our Blessed Mother will always hold a very special place in our hearts. So let s pray together that Mary, the Virgin full of grace, will continue to pray for us, now and at the hour of our death. Ask her to help you rediscover what really matters this summer season, and give you the will to give back to those less fortunate having the opportunity to be an example with your testimony of LOVE...and MAKE THE DIFFERENCE in the world! 13 OUR ADULT FAITH FORMATION CORNER SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER / ASCENSION OF THE LORD LIVING A NEW REALITY By Mary Katharine Deeley Part of my ministry involves sitting with families as they plan a funeral service for a loved one. There are often long pauses as thoughts flood their minds and memories fill their hearts. They share stories and grief. With great care, we select readings and songs and talk about prayers. Inevitably, we talk about what will happen after the funeral. I tell them grief is a process, that everyone does it differently, and that it would be good to be gentle with each other. In my experience, it takes about six weeks just for the reality to begin setting in and to begin adjusting to this new situation. Things don t get better. They get different, and we go on. I can only imagine how the disciples felt when Jesus, whom they loved, was crucified in front of them. They had only just begun their grieving. I can only imagine the joy they felt when he appeared after his resurrection, eating with and teaching them again, giving them everything they needed for what was to come. I can t help but wonder how they felt when he left them again, ascending into heaven not dead, but so very clearly not with them in the same way. We celebrate Jesus ascension just past the six-week mark from Easter. I like to think the reality of the death and resurrection has just started to sink in and that we re learning to move on in this new situation. It s no accident that Jesus last command to us is to live that new reality and tell the world about him. THE PRIVATE PAIN OF INFERTILITY By Julie Irwin Zimmerman The year after our wedding, I sat in church on Mother s Day and daydreamed about how joyful the holiday would be the following spring. My husband and I decided to have a baby, and I imagined we d have our newborn the next Mother s Day. But the following May and the one after that we went to church with empty arms. To our dismay, we d been diagnosed as among the 25 percent of married, childless couples in the U.S. who have trouble conceiving or carrying a baby to term. It wasn t only Mother s Day that was hard to bear. Baptisms and baby showers were difficult. Sometimes, merely seeing a pregnant woman or a couple with a baby sent me into despair. The months developed an unwelcome rhythm, beginning with hope, then anxiety, and ending in tears. My prayer life had taken on the same rhythm: first, optimistic appeals for pregnancy; then, frantic pleas for help getting through the month; and finally, silent anguish when I felt my prayers had been ignored. I wondered: What have we done to deserve this? Why hasn t our simple wish for a child been granted? Although infertility is common, it can be isolating to sufferers. Often friends and family don t know what to say, make awkward jokes, or avoid the topic altogether. There are moral, ethical, and financial mine fields to navigate, and it s easy for spouses to disagree about what to do. Couples facing infertility have three options: seek medical treatment, pursue adoption, or live without children. While it s understandable to want to end the ordeal of infertility as quickly as possible, these decisions are important ones deserving prayer and discernment. Catholic teaching on infertility treatment is often misunderstood. While the Catholic Church encourages couples to welcome children, not all medical options for infertility are considered acceptable. Surgeries and treatments that restore or enhance a couple s ability to conceive naturally or which assist the conjugal act are encouraged. Procedures that involve a third party, replacing natural conception, or the conjugal act artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, and donor eggs or sperm are considered unacceptable. A document by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Life-Giving Love in an Age of Technology, reiterates the long-standing position of the Church. Fortunately, there are an increasing number of physicians using NaPro Technology, which treats infertility in harmony with Church teaching. The Pope Paul VI Institute is a leader in the field, and an internet search can help couples find local providers. Adoption is also a path to parenthood that s filled with many blessings. Seeking out adoptive parents and hearing their stories can affirm for infertile couples the role God played in bringing them together. And, of course, even in the midst of infertility, couples should take time to nurture their relationships and acknowledge that they re already a family. A weekend away, a walk in the woods, even setting aside dinner hours free from infertility talk helped my husband and me remind ourselves of our love and how satisfying our marriage was. The experience of infertility helped me understand what Jesus did when he willingly accepted his cross. Before encountering infertility, I still believed if I worked hard enough at something, I could achieve it. Those years taught me a difficult, invaluable lesson about giving up control over my future and trusting God to reveal a future that was beyond my hopes and fears. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. MAY 13 ST. JOAN OF ARC 15
