3 PASTOR S MESSAGE Wash Up Big Time! Wash the car, wash your face, wash the dog, wash behind your ears, wash the dishes! We are all very familiar with the different kinds of washing that we do each day. The Feast of The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of the most important washing that ever happened to us. On that day, although most of us don t remember it, our life was forever changed. We were washed clean of any sin and emerged as a beautiful pure new creation of God s mercy. We were dressed in a white garment and joined all of the angels and saints in praising and glorifying Jesus. Our parents and godparents were presented with a lighted candle to symbolize the Christ, the Light of the World. We were also anointed with aromatic and blessed oil to symbolize our new, elevated royal state. The Baptism we received bound us to Jesus in an eternal union so that we became one with Christ and were filled with supernatural life. Our Baptism also opened up for us all of the other sacraments so that gradually as we mature in faith we are blessed at each stage of our spiritual development. We also receive the quest and elevated challenge to witness to Christ and to the Church in all of our words and actions. Baptism begins a vocation that lasts a lifetime. Jesus showed us The Way and we should all be filled with joy because of our Baptism and give thanks for the Wash Up Big Time we received on that grace filled Baptismal day. Msgr. Michael D. McGraw CLERGY DEVOTION Our Christmas season is formally coming to a close this weekend. And although this may be an unsettling thought the psalm reminds us that God always wishes to comfort and bless us with his peace. This is important to remember as we strive to return to our jobs and responsibilities and studies with an enthusiasm and 100% effort which seems more difficult to maintain when compared to the excitement of the Christmas season and its many extra enjoyable activities. Compounded by all the uncertainty and challenges and expectations, we need God s peace. -We need to cling to peace to knowing God s with us no matter what. -We need to cling to peace of knowing we are the beloved children of God and he wants to help us more than we could even imagine as we persevere to be faithful to our various responsibilities and relationships. -We need to cling to the peace of doing what we were created to do. Fulfilling the purpose God created us to have is the greatest honor any of us could ever have! Even if things seem to be out-of-control around us, the one thing we never have to lose is our internal peace from God. And the more consistently we can remember this reality in the various challenges in life (even if you feel like you have to remind yourself thousands of times a day), the more pervasive that peace will become, and the more others around us will draw closer to God as they too realize that God s peace is a necessity! Celebrating 60 years of Catholic presence in Boca Raton So Many Success Stories from Parishioners in 60 Years! We moved to Boca Raton the summer of 1979 and started attending Parish s Masses. Our son started CCD classes and was confirmed at Church. Having been active most of my life in parish work, I chose the Hunger Fund Ministry as my first place to start volunteering at St. Joan s. As I recall, we had 7 projects. Mine was local and I sent them quarterly checks to help with their food bank. We had monthly collections to help fund our ministry and our group started the Annual Spring Spaghetti Dinner. The contributions are now going to the Ministry of the Good Shepherd in Peru. The monthly collections now go to our own SJA Care Ministry. Another group at that time was devoted to helping Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Delray Beach. Each year I enjoyed working with the SJA Care Ministry for the Haitian Children s Christmas party through the care ministry. Sister Josephine asked me to be an EM (Eucharistic Minister) at the 6:45am Masses. From her kind invitation, I eventually became the captain of volunteers for that Mass, the early Sunday Mass. I then I was informed that part of this job was also to recruit more volunteers. I am in awe of the volunteers constant, faithful, and loving service to their positions. I went on to be trained as a Lector and Altar Server. Being an EM at St. Joan s also required one to bring Holy Communion to our three local nursing homes, hospital and homebound. One day I received a call asking if I would extend this help (along with my general support of families) with the Funeral Ministry. I ve also been involved with the SJA CCW (Council of Catholic Women). When I first joined, we were making sandwiches for three after school programs. It broke our hearts when the Health Department shut us down. One day Allan (my husband) and I read about a new ministry starting at St. Joan s called The Respite Ministry. We took the one full-day of instruction and we were assigned a number of clients. This ministry work was an adventure beyond our wildest dreams. And then the Fresh Start Prison Ministry. We helped individuals being released back into society. Another adventure beyond our wildest dreams. I could go on and on about what Adventures Beyond Our Wildest Dreams means. We are so blessed and grateful to Church for all the joy, love, friendship and experiences that St. Joan s has provided us over these many years. Mary Springs *To help celebrate our 60th Anniversary year-long celebration, St. Joan s would love to hear your success stories too! Please Fr. Martin at dunne_martin@stjoan.org and we ll likely include your account of how this parish has greatly affected the lives of you and your loved ones!* 7
