In the first reading the people of Nineveh appealed to, and accepted, God s offer of mercy in spite of the sinfulness which nearly led to their self-destruction, and the apostles in today s gospel accepted Jesus call to be his apostles and among the very first disciples and in spite of their seeming unworthiness as poor fishermen of Galilee. Two of the most extreme examples of history: neither group let their feelings of unworthiness get in the way. So how can we? Do we feel unworthiness for receiving God s forgiveness? Maybe that means we still need to forgive ourselves. Maybe that means we still need to forgive someone else. Maybe that means we still have to trust that God s mercy will always be infinitely greater than whatever wrong choice we may have made. Maybe that means we still need to let go of something in our lives we already know is causing harm. Maybe that means we have yet to see the redemptive value of our past by incorporating the hard lessons learned from our missteps into insuring that we live the rest of our lives more completely. Do we feel unworthy to be God s disciples? Maybe that means we still need to receive God s forgiveness (see above!). Maybe that means we have not yet seen the very act of God forgiving us as our greatest opportunity to show others that God is also offering his forgiving transformative love to them. Maybe that means we do not trust that our unique God-given talents can be used in helping others seek the joy of the gospel. Maybe that means we haven t yet taken the opportunities we already know of to serve those who are depending on our help. Maybe that means that we don t fully believe that God will always be with us to give us what we need to fulfill our purpose (often at the most unexpected moments). Do we feel unworthy to enjoy God s blessings? Maybe that means we still need to receive God s forgiveness (see above!). Maybe that means we have yet to accept that we are each in our own unique way the beloved children of the one true God who desires our happiness (more than we desire it for ourselves) and has already given us so very much! Yes we can struggle with the feeling of unworthiness because we still could be working on overcoming one struggle or another but that s precisely why we can t allow that feeling to get in the way of accepting God s offer of love in all things. In the process we will not only be living our lives to the fullest but also we can become more worthy. - Father Martin Dunne, III Baptisms Every 1st & 3rd Sunday (English): 1:30pm 3rd Saturday (Spanish): 12 noon Confessions Saturday: 3:00-4:00pm Sunday: 5:50-6:20pm (Spanish & English) Confessions by appointment during office hours JANUARY 21, 2018 YOUR CARING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN JANUARY DOWNTOWN 21 ST. 2 WHY ARE WE PARISHIONERS AT ST. JOAN OF ARC? "First and foremost, is my faith. I am a cradle Catholic, so naturally, I attend Church. Wherever I live, I attend, Sunday and mostly daily Masses. While retiring to Florida, in 2009, I landed in Boynton Beach, and attended St. Mark s. Soon, I found myself dating this lovely lady who attended St. Joan of Arc, so I too started coming to Mass, First Sunday Mass. Then I learned she attended daily Mass, at 6:45am. (My daily Mass at St. Mark s was 8am. I was not too certain about 6:45am and the early morning drive from Boynton to Boca.) Yet, I did wake, make the drive, sat in the pew for 6:45 Mass, and there she was. SO one thing lead to another, and soon we were dating, engaged, married. So why do I like St Joan of Arc? It s a dynamic parish, the campus is constantly a hub of activities. The Masses offer my spiritual rejuvenation. The homilies, from our Pastor, parochial vicars and deacons are inspiring. They bring the gospel to me in today s understanding of my world. The energy of the congregation, the choir, the ushers provide a feeling of welcoming and community. The various ministries, care, bereavement, Knights, spiritual life, Bible Study provide fellowship and support during this time when we are bombarded with the instant communication from a world of instant insanity and fear. The congregational family at St. Joan of Arc, through the guidance of our Pastor, provide a steadfast anchor to the love and teaching and goal to be with Christ for eternity." We extend a warm WELCOME to all newcomers and visitors! If you are a new member of our St. Joan of Arc Parish Family or are visiting us for the first time, be sure to stop-by our Parish Office. There, a member of our parish leadership team will be happy to inform you about our parish life, ministries, organizations, and service opportunities. We look forward to meeting you! 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE THE 45 TH ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE FOR LIFE & THE DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN This week parishioners from Saint Joan of Arc participated in the Forty Fifth Annual Pilgrimage for Life in Washington, D.C. It was a weekend of prayer, marches and Christian solidarity to protest the Supreme Court Decision Roe vs. Wade and its legitimizing the availability of abortion in our country. The parishioners who are on pilgrimage stand for us all and register the commitment that we have for the sacredness of human life. CELEBRATING OUR PARISH SPIRITUAL VITALITY SACRAMENTAL PARTICIPATION 2017 Baptisms 121 First Communions 150 Confirmations 145 Marriages 15 Funerals 52 PARISH MEMBERSHIP 2017 New Parish Registrations 240 FAITH FORMATION & SOCIAL MINISTRIES RCIA, Bible Study Groups (English & Spanish), Adult Faith Education, Men's & Women's Retreats, Koinonia Retreat, Columbiettes Retreat Day, Parish Lenten Mission, AIM Retreat, Ministries Volunteerism (hundreds), Adult Social Activities (Yah-Yah Club), Youth Ministry Activities and Parish, School & CCD Faith Formation. Thanks Be To God! On Monday, American Catholics are also invited to observe a Day of Prayer with reflection and political action. The sad truth of the matter is that even with a gradual decline in the number of abortions, thousands of abortions were recorded in the State of Florida during Our prayers and activism continue to be critical as we seek to reverse this evil that now enjoys legal justification. It is also important that we strive to create in our families a consistent "culture of life" that is our Catholic answer to the "culture of death. What does the "culture of life" look like? Our families should be characterized by a reverence and nurturance of human life throughout the continuum of life. It is important that we respect the rights of all family members, that we keep our homes safe from violence and abuse and that we teach peaceful and respectful resolution of family conflicts. Our senior family members should receive the care and respect necessary for them to enjoy an appropriate quality of life and relationships. Family members with disabilities also need to be assured of their value in the fabric of family relationships and gifts. At the center of this family "culture of life" is a family spirituality that includes family prayer and devotions, scripture reading, weekly participation in Holy Mass and family good works of care and concern for others. Every important family event including birthdays, school events, meals, individual successes and accomplishments, difficult experiences, even suffering and deaths in the family all have a spiritual dimension that needs to be recognized and honored. Family life is filled with the grace and life of God but sometimes we just don't notice or celebrate God's role and presence. We can, however, create a Catholic family counter-culture that is life-reverencing and life embracing and stands as a "sign of contradiction" to the impoverishment of contemporary culture and values. As we grieve the effects of the "culture of death", we should be hopeful that together we can create a life-reverencing and life-sustaining Way of Life that is The Way of Jesus The Way that always confronts and ultimately triumphs over every sin and evil. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw JANUARY 21 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

5 FROM THE SOCIAL OUTREACH MINISTRY DIRECTOR Because we had our Ministry Fair & Ice Cream Social last weekend I thought it would be a good time to discuss the importance of becoming involved in the parish life of the church that one attends, especially if you missed the event. Here at St. Joan of Arc there is much more going on than a few Masses (7 to be exact) on a weekend. There are numerous service groups meeting every week: the Knights of Columbus, the Council of Catholic Women, the School Dad s Club and the Columbiettes just to name a few. There are also numerous liturgical ministries here at St. Joan of Arc: Ministers of Hospitality, Choir, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Lectors with each ministry being a vital part of our church liturgies. There are also our social outreach ministries, our Care Ministry that runs our Food Pantry and Crisis Center which are important elements in the care of those who are less fortunate in our community. There are many other areas of our vibrant church community life that one can participate in as well. There are also many benefits to volunteering besides helping out your church or your neighbor. Studies show that people who volunteer their time are 22% less likely to die a premature death. Volunteering can reduce stress, help you find new friends, let you reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Giving your time for others can also help protect your mental and physical health. So with all of these added benefits why not take the time to check out the opportunities open to you and donate your time and talent towards those in need. 13 BRINGING HOME THE WORD THE POWER OF CHRIST S INVITATION By Mary Katharine Deeley Whether he knew it or not, Jonah was one of the most powerful prophets in Israel. He had scarcely started on his journey through Ninevah when the entire city under the direction of the king expressed sorrow for their sins and turned God s judgment to mercy. I think we all hope we might be that effective in our jobs. If we to continue to read the Book of Jonah, though, we find that he wasn t so happy about this turn of events he felt it made him look weak. Did he not predict the destruction of Ninevah if they failed to repent? But for now, we see a people so moved by the word of God that they immediately change their behavior. In Mark s Gospel, Christ s invitation is just as compelling for the four fishermen who abandon their nets and their father by the sea and immediately change their direction and their lives. I have a hard time imagining the words that would make me drop everything to follow a completely different path. Certainly I ve taken the advice of friends and family or have responded to circumstances that demanded a new direction, but only after reflection and prayer but it took considerably longer than a single moment. The power of the good news, however, is unlike any other to those who are open to it. When we really hear God s voice, our hearts yearn to be in his presence and, though not always easily, our souls and minds bend to his will. How is God s word calling you to change today? SEVEN DIVINE WORKS OF ART By Fr. Thomas Richstatter, OFM One thing you can say about Catholics: We aren t afraid of things. In fact, it s the opposite. We know that creation is good and that created things can serve as a window through which we see something of God. For us, things are not an obstacle to grace but a means of grace. This is true in those celebrations we call sacraments. Humans are body, mind, and spirit, and we Catholics come to God with our whole being not with words alone. We do not simply say, Jesus is my Savior. We Catholics do more. We go into the baptismal tomb where we die with Christ, then plunge into the waters of birth in him. We come up from the Church s womb with rebirth and new life to be oiled and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, and fed on the Body and Blood of Christ at the Eucharist. Catholicism is an incarnated religion. It uses the ordinary stuff of this world to touch the world beyond. An artist is always somehow embodied in his or her work. We can look at a painting and say, That is a Picasso. We hear a piece of music and say, That s clearly Beethoven. In a similar way we can look at the sacraments and say, That s God! We see the artist revealed in the work of art. That s what the sacraments are seven great artworks revealing the Creator. PORTRAITS OF GOD Baptism reveals God as the womb and source of all life. When I see a newly baptized infant in his or her parents arms, I get a glimpse of parental God embracing us loving us, not because of what we have done, but because we are God s children. Confirmation reveals our destiny; we are to live to make visible in outward signs the personality of our Creator God. We are to be signs of wisdom, judgment, courage, knowledge, reverence, and awe. Eucharist says it all: We become present to the Lord who died that we might live who feeds us with his Body and Blood so that we become one body filled with his Spirit. JANUARY 21, 2018 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reconciliation reveals a God ever ready to forgive and embrace us. Anointing shows us a God who heals, longing for the end of sickness, pain, and disease and calling us along with all creation to wholeness. Holy orders provides a glimpse of a God who shepherds the flock, leading and sanctifying all into the kingdom. And what a powerful sign we have in marriage! In the faithful, total, through-thick-and-thin, for-betteror-worse love the couple promises each other in the rite of marriage, all who witness the sacrament can glimpse how God loves us: faithfully, totally, through thick and thin, for better or worse. At their wedding, the bride and groom receive many wonderful gifts. But the gifts they receive are not as wonderful as the gift the couple gives us. They give us a sacrament, a sign of who God is. SEEING MORE As Americans, we value efficiency and production. We like getting to the point and getting the job done. Sometimes this can blind us to the symbolic function of things and events. Sacraments produce through symbols. Sacraments help us see more. They help us see God in a baby s smile or in the touch of a loved one; they help us to find God in the I m sorry of someone who has hurt us. The sacraments, and all of creation, reveal the divine Creator artist. SUNDAY READINGS Jonah 3:1 5, 10 They proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. 1 Corinthians 7:29 31 For the world in its present form is passing away. Mark 1:14 20 Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. WEEKDAY READINGS January Mon. No evangelizer acts, as Paul VI recalled, in virtue of a... personal inspiration, butin union with the mission of the Church and in her name. Address to International Union of Superiors General, May 8, 2013 Lord, draw me close to your heart that I may come to know and love you more deeply. From Peaceful Meditations for Every Day in Ordinary Time, Rev. Warren J. Savage and Mary Ann McSweeny Do I understand that putting off the voice of God is also putting off all the good, joy, and peace he wants to bring about by what he is asking? 2017 Liguori Publications, One Liguori Drive, Liguori, MO Scripture quotations in this publication are from New American Bible, revised edition, 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Washington, DC. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed. 2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.) A bequest can be made in a number of ways: A specific dollar amount. Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property. Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan. A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.
