I feel the more & more completely we accept this from our hearts, the less & less we will worry (and in recent days we ve seen plenty of worry)! The temptations to worry are all around us, but it is important to first consider how worry differs from concern. It s understandable, even necessary and very good at times, to be concerned. It s obviously great for parents to be concerned about the safety and welfare of their children; it is great to be concerned about doing our very best at all times regarding our relationship with God, our universal vocation as disciples, and our particular vocations as cleric, spouse, employee, student, etc. Instead of, concern, worry is more akin to the, senseless anxieties we used to pray for protection from after praying the Our Father in Mass. You are already familiar with how easy worries can set-in. You are already familiar with the unhappiness worry causes, and you may already be able to think back to times where the worry turned-out to be over nothing (but so much time was still lost while you worried!). You are already familiar with how worry can make the situation worse, as it clouds judgment into making harmful decisions which often create new problems for us to get worried about! So, therefore, our concern needs to be how to break the cycles of worry! This involves recognizing, and dropping, the harmful tendency to pursue total control to the point where we think that we no longer would need God. Sound familiar? At the very least it was part of Original Sin of Adam & Eve, but we don t need to go that far back to find examples! Next relates to reflecting on the multitude of similar Scripture passages which remind us that we are the Lord s, through the reality of God s infinite love of us (and his related longing for our ultimate happiness). Therefore we have nothing to truly fear in this world, even when the hardships intensify. Perhaps most important part, however, is the need for us to pray constantly, pray in our recognition that we will always need God, pray to overcome the temptations to worry through a focus fixed on God, and pray for the courage to live the lives we are called to as an expression of both gratitude and trust of God! So while there are many good things to be concerned about in our lives, with prayer and trust we can begin to forever free ourselves from worry, because, no matter what, we are the Lord s. - Father Martin Dunne, III Confessions Saturday: 3:00-4:00pm Sunday: 5:50-6:20pm (Spanish & English) Confessions by appointment during office hours SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 YOUR WELCOMING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SEPTEMBER IN DOWNTOWN 17 ST. 3 PASTOR S MESSAGE Dear St. Joan of Arc Family, We have survived the tragedy of Hurricane Irma without any deaths but with much personal property destruction, power outages and many other inconveniences. Our church was not damaged and our campus only lost the awning outside of the Gift Shop and a few trees. We also had some minor water damage in the Church. The church and chapel reopened Friday, September 15 th for all Masses and services. God was good to God's House. Now we have the difficult task of reconstructing our homes, our daily schedules and many of life's arrangements. We do this with faith in God and gratefulness for our deliverance. As disciples of Our Master, it is now our responsibility to follow Him faithfully and to reach out and care for our neighbors with His compassion. Florida is providing a wonderful model to our country of how to survive a natural disaster with enthusiasm, hope and great concern for neighbor. All of us at Saint Joan of Arc Church are part of this miraculous outpouring of love and prayer. Below is a prayer in times of natural disaster. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw SEPTEMBER 17 ST. 5 FROM THE SJA PARISH ACTIVITIES & HISPANIC MINISTRIES DIRECTOR As you might know, I came over to the United States nearly fourteen years ago following the Lord s lead. I knew he had a mission for me in this country and that there was a journey ahead of me. I started as a volunteer at our Parish, but about a year ago he made my path very clear. I said "Use me Lord," and here I am now working full time for HIM as an instrument for you. Jesus wants us to work with him, to be the light of the world and give up ourselves to him and his will just as Mother Mary did when she said "yes" after being asked to be the virgin mother of our Savior Jesus Christ. Like Mary, as we strive to answer his call our disposition is key, both towards God and toward other people. Peter, Mary Magdalene, Paul and many others found a new disposition after they encountered Jesus. As they all did, we can come to a deeper understanding of all that Jesus did for us on the cross and all the blessings he is constantly pouring onto us; that it is our job to stay aware of our gifts on a daily basis, and then we will find ourselves more eager to serve the Lord. Through HIM... with HIM... in HIM... as we hear at every mass...in unity with the holy spirit...is the way to find real joy, peace, harmony, strength, hope in everything we do. Our understanding of what God can do with our "YES" is as limited as Mary and Joseph's. Imagine how they were feeling at the time things were unfolding when they were unsure of where and why God was leading them. All they could see were the risks involved with choosing to go forward. Joseph with a pregnant woman from someone else s child and Mary jeopardizing not only her chance of a good marriage, but her life as well both said "YES" with faith in spite of their fears and confusion. When you give up yourselves to do His will...he will lead you and open the doors for you were ever He wants you to be...just the way He does... it will always be the best for you...with no doubts... Everything will falls into place at the right time. And that is how you have me now as the Director of Parish and Hispanic Ministries and Activities at our Parish. We have a lot of work to do on being a testimony for all the ones that need God and us more than ever after this devastating hurricane. September 8 th we celebrated the liturgical memorial of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary,. The Second Vatican Council says that Mary precedes us in the way of faith because she believed that what was spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled (Luke 1:45). And this Friday we are celebrating our Lady of Sorrow...after a very stressful and uncertain call from nature to wake up us ON TRUSTING HIM and say YES to HIM with the same faith having all the fears and confusion of the uncertainty, like Joseph and Mary had when they said YES. Mary stands with us in our suffering. As our mother in heaven, she comes alongside us, supports us, and leads us through. As Mother of the Church, she is uniquely able to understand what we re going through. And also and opportunity to be HIS instruments of courage, help and testimony of our faith on Him with all the victims of this mayor hurricane we just live through. Let s pray to our blessed mother to intercede for us to have the gift of an ever more mature, stronger and deeper faith. Holy Mary, thank you for your example of trust and abandonment to God s will. Thank you too for the help of your intercession. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. What YES is he calling you for next? Let s pray to Jesus to give us a heart that wants to help others. To give ourselves to His will and to be open to let Him use us to build His church. To let us be alert for the need of the people around us and to be alert to their emotional and physical needs as well...jesus wants to work with US! 9 FROM THE SJA PARISH ACTIVITIES & HISPANIC MINISTRIES DIRECTOR What do you get when you combine nearly 20 teens, tons of pizza, and tie dye? It s a recipe for a mess for sure! The St. Joan of Arc High School Youth Group (The SpArk) hosted its kick-off event on September 3rd after the 5pm Mass. The teens prepped themselves with gloves, wrapped the shirts in rubber bands to create a design, and soaked the shirts in the colors of their choosing. For many teens, this was the first time they ever tie dyed a shirt. Afterrward, teens came together in prayer before they broke bread. Then, to wrap up the night, we talked and played games together. For , the SpArk will be hosting more events and service projects instead of meeting on a weekly basis. The theme for the youth group this year is becoming the Hands of Jesus and becoming more actively involved. As St. Teresa of Avila said, Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours, Yours are the eyes through which to look out Christ's compassion to the world, Yours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good; Yours are the hands with which he is to bless men now. Getting involved does not mean we are just going to show up. We are going to provide our time, talent and treasure to help care for the Earth and for our brothers and sisters in Christ who dwell upon it. There is no youth without you. Get involved, participate, and if you have any ideas or charity causes you are passionate about, share with me and let s see what we can do! me at bryant_valerie@stjoan.org or connect with me on Facebook or The youth will still come together in worship at the 5 pm Youth Mass every Sunday so teens will still have the opportunity to get involved as ushers, altar servers, lectors and Extraordinary Ministers serving the Body and Blood of Christ. 10 BRINGING HOME THE WORD SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME TEACHING FORGIVENESS By Judith Dunlap Some families hang on to grievances like treasured heirlooms. They look for insults and slights. Belligerence almost becomes a way of life. Remember the Hatfields and the McCoys? They are the antithesis of Christian behavior. Being generous with our forgiveness is the hallmark of our faith. Teaching, celebrating, and living forgiveness are characteristics of the home church as well as the larger Church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that when we refuse to forgive we harden and close our hearts, making it difficult for God s love to enter. Experts tell us that anger and grief that are harbored and rehashed can do physical as well as spiritual harm. You do a great service to your children when you teach them to forgive and let go. When they have been injured, give them time to talk about their injury. Listen to and allow them to express their anger, grief, or frustration. Let them know they have a right to all of their feelings, but then help them see that hanging on to anger or grief for a long time is an uncomfortable way to live. Invite them to pray and ask God to heal their hurts and help them forgive, or even just want to forgive. Try to model this behavior by talking about your own hurts. Pray with your children, asking God to open your hearts to divine forgiveness. In the Our Father, the prayer Jesus gave his disciples and his Church, we are reminded that forgiving others is the prerequisite for receiving forgiveness ourselves: Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. When we open our hearts in an effort to forgive others, we allow God s loving forgiveness to enter. Inherent in that forgiveness is the mandate to pass it along. A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS We must not grow weary, then, of keeping watch over our thoughts and our attitudes, in order that we may be given even now a foretaste of the warmth and splendor of God s Face which in eternal life we shall contemplate in all its fullness. Forward, thinking of this judgment which begins now...forward, doing so in such a way that our hearts open to Jesus and to his salvation; forward without fear, for if we ask forgiveness for our sins he will forgive us. This is what Jesus is like. Forward then,...which will bring us to the glory of heaven! General audience, St. Peter s Square, December 11, 2013 SUNDAY READINGS Sirach 27:30 28:7 Forgive your neighbor the wrong done to you; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Romans 14:7 9 For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. Matthew 18:21 35 [Jesus said,] Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you? How kind, patient, and forgiving am I on a regular basis? How kind, patient, and forgiving would others say I am? 10 ST. JOAN OF ARC SEPTEMBER 17

11 HOW TO REALLY FORGIVE By Fr. William H. Shannon Every day I say a prayer at least seven times which, if I truly thought about its full meaning, would scare me half to death. I say the Lord s Prayer, in which I ask God to treat me the way I treat others. I suspect though I don t like to admit it that I secretly hope that God will treat me much better than I treat others. It s not that I m a nasty person. At least I don t think I am. But there are times when I treat others shabbily and find it hard to forgive. Oh, I can go through the external motions of being gingerly polite, but rancor may still be in my heart. So let s admit it: It takes courage to say the Lord s Prayer. In this text from Matthew, Jesus is blunt: If you forgive, God will forgive you. If you don t forgive, God won t forgive you. What does Jesus mean by such strong, demanding words? First, he does not mean that our God is a God of retaliation who says, I ll show you. If you don t forgive I will get even with you. I won t forgive you either. The God Jesus reveals loves us and continues to love us, no matter what we do. The point Jesus is making is more subtle. He is telling us that God, much as God might want to do so, cannot forgive us if we do not forgive others. He is telling us that forgiveness cannot be received by an unforgiving heart. Receptive Hearts As I write this, I look out the window of my office where I see a cement sidewalk. I think to myself: How nice it would be if I could look out and, instead of seeing slabs of concrete, encounter a colorful group of lovely flowers growing in the middle of that space. I might even ask a friend who has a green thumb to plant such flowers there for me. But alas, much as he might want to please me, it is impossible for my friend to do so. The concrete is too hard to receive the roots of the flowers. Likewise, a hardened heart can be no more open to forgiveness than concrete is to flower seeds. We need to have our hardened hearts softened and opened by God s grace so that God s loving forgiveness can flow into us and through us to others. Gift of Tears Do you remember the story of the Israelites in the desert protesting to Moses that they have no water to drink? God ordered Moses to strike a huge rock with his staff and, behold, water gushed forth in abundance. Early Church writers often prayed for the gift of tears that would open their hearts and enable them to receive God s loving forgiveness. Indeed, in an older Latin missal there was a Mass for the gift of tears. (This Mass has been revived in the latest version of The Roman Missal.) The opening prayer is strikingly beautiful and relates to forgiveness: Almighty and most gentle God, Who from a rock made flow A fountain of living water For your thirsting people, draw now from the hardness of our hearts tears of sorrow that we may weep for our sins and, by your continued mercy, be ready to accept their pardon. Amen. The situation may well arise when this lovely prayer will prove helpful for you. Clip it out and take it with you for safe keeping. Lord, your resurrection conquered sin and death. Give me the strength to overcome pride so I can become a humble servant of your love and peace. Amen. From Peaceful Meditations for Every Day in Ordinary Time Rev. Warren J. 15 Padre Oscar Alonso, Sch.P.
