This alone tells us how important it is for us not to be afraid, even though it seems a greater challenge than ever before, as there are so many things, externally and internally, which seem to threaten us into worry all of the time. For example, we place so much stress on ourselves if things beyond our control interfere with our plans for the day, and we then fear that we won t be able to get everything done, and that it will cause a snowball effect and that it won t end well. The repetition of this message 365 times says just how deeply God cares for us, how keenly aware he is of the threats that fear can impose on us, how he wants to spare us from all fear, worry, and senseless anxiety which can rob us of both our happiness and our unique purpose in life. Although not as clearly noticeable as the 365 verses directly telling us, be not afraid, God is once-again giving us the same message in this Sunday s gospel, the parable of the seeds: Be not afraid. The fate of the seeds which do not bear fruit represent the various fears which can become the excuses preventing us from fulfilling all our particular vocations, yet most especially our universal vocation to be Christ s disciple: The seed that, the evil one comes and steals away: Will we fear we will forget that we have been enriched by Word and Sacrament each Sunday as the stresses of life spur us to making the wrong decisions? Maybe as early as the church parking lot? The seed sown on rocky ground: Will we fear that we will be rejected by others (whether family, friends, or society) if we do not make compromises on our faith, our Catholic moral teachings which seek to spare us of unhappiness, our very vocations? The seed sown among thorns: Will we fear that if we don t compartmentalize and hold people or things higher than God as the greatest good we will lose them? Jesus loves us so much that he desires us to always live in freedom from all fear. Jesus wants us to savor the joy of the gospel in our daily lives. Jesus wants to entrust us with making others aware of the joy and fulfillment they are meant to have so we can all produce or 60 - or 30 - fold with our daily lives! Be not afraid! - Father Martin Dunne III Confessions Saturday: 3:15-4pm & 5:30-6:15pm JULY 16, 2017 YOUR WELCOMING CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN DOWNTOWN JULY 16 ST. BOCA JOAN OF RATON ARC 1

3 PASTOR S MESSAGE ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA THE LILY OF THE MOHAWKS A MODEL OF FAITH FOR OUR SUMMER SPIRITUAL GROWTH During the summer is probably not the best time to write about making progress toward sainthood. It is, however, a good time to call attention to a recently canonized saint who was very important in my own growth in faith and in the lives of many Catholics raised in the Northeast of our country. I call attention to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, because in grade school everyday we prayed for her canonization. Now all of our prayers have been answered. She represents for the striving Christian a model of how to deal with persecution, misunderstanding, being ostracized from family and friends because of faith and devotion to God. She is also a great inspiration during the times that we suffer from illness or life-threatening diseases. Holiness, as Kateri teaches us, is a heroism of faithful practice of the basics of our faith and with a special concern for the sick, aged and vulnerable. These virtues are ones that we can surely practice even during summer vacations. Kateri was born near the town of Auriesville, New York, in the year 1656, the daughter of a Mohawk warrior. She was four years old when her mother died of smallpox. The disease also attacked Kateri and damaged her face. She was adopted by her two aunts and an uncle. Kateri became converted as a teenager. She was baptized at the age of twenty and incurred the great hostility of her tribe. Although she had to suffer greatly for her Faith, she remained firm in it. Kateri went to a new Christian colony of Indians in Canada. Here she lived a life dedicated to prayer, penitential practices, and care for the sick and aged. Every morning, even in bitterest winter, she stood before the chapel door until it opened at four and remained there until after the last Mass. She was devoted to the Eucharist and to Jesus Crucified. She died on April 17, 1680 at the age of twenty-four. She is known as the Lily of the Mohawks. Devotion to Kateri is responsible for establishing Native American ministries in Catholic Churches all over the United States and Canada. Kateri, was declared venerable by the Catholic Church in 1943 and she was Beatified in During the time since she was officially canonized by the Church, hundreds of thousands have visited shrines to Kateri erected at both St. Francis Xavier and Caughnawaga and at her birth place at Auriesville, New York. Pilgrimages to these sites continue today. It is a prayerful and spiritually powerful site to visit since it also is a Shrine to all of the North American Martyrs. St. Kateri Teckakwitha is the first Native American to be declared a Saint. Her feast day is July 14. She is the patroness of the environment and ecology as is St. Francis of Assisi. - Msgr. Michael D. McGraw JULY 16 ST. JOAN OF ARC 3

6 FROM THE SJA LITURGICAL MUSIC & CHOIR MINISTRY DIRECTOR HUMILITY AND OUR CATHOLIC FAITH Humility is the moral virtue that keeps a person from reaching beyond oneself. It is the virtue that restrains the unruly desire for personal greatness and leads people to an orderly love of themselves based on a true appreciation of their respect to God and their neighbors. Religious humility recognizes one s total dependence on God. Moral humility recognizes one s creaturely equality with others. Yet, humility is not only opposed to pride, it is also opposed to immoderate self-abjection, which would fail to recognize God s gifts and use them according to His will. CATHOLIC DICTIONARY In choosing a topic for this week s article I went to the calendar and found that this week we have a memorial in recognition of St. Mary Magdalene. I m in awe of her humility and would like to refresh our memories. Mary was a sinner, but with sorrow, hope, and love she looked upon Jesus. She bowed down and said not a word, but bathed His feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. With great humility she kissed His feet and with an utterance from Him, her sins were gone. Although she was covered with shame she came and received a great reward. Forgiveness was given and received. Thereafter, ministering to Jesus she sat at His feet and listened to His words. Jesus so loved her family that He raised her brother, Lazarus, from the dead. He even wept at the death of Lazarus. Mary stood at the foot of the cross during His crucifixion, a representation of many who had been forgiven. Jesus also gave the certainty of His resurrection to her and made Himself known to her first after rising from the grave. He called her by name because she was His. Such humility is worthy to be recognized and presented to us as an example of its true value. While today we can t do as Mary did, we nonetheless can find many ways to live our lives with humility. I want to challenge you to find your way, in your life, to recognize and practice humility as stated above. Let me send you away with words to a song that I hope will be a blessing to you and serve as a start for renewed humility in your quest to be more like Jesus in your daily interactions with God and each other. Lord, I come before You to honor and adore You for all You are and all that You have done. Lord, I am not worthy. My heart is dark and dirty, but still somehow You bid for me to come. So clothe me, humility. Remind me that I come before a King and there is nothing more precious or more worthy. May I gaze deeper. May I stay longer. May I press onward to know You, Lord. - Laura Story Sing a new or renewed song in your hearts as you go. And, if you happen to sing it out loud that would be okay too.
