1 February 12, 2017 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2017 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday 8:45 am: Tuesday & Wednesday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am & 6 pm Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME True Love Love hurts. Those two words sum up what most of us have experienced. True love is a commitment. When we look to the crucifix we see what love is all about. God didn t just tell us he loves us on Valentine s Day or once a week on Sunday, but each day God shows us a Father s love. One of many reasons we gather each Sunday, not just when we feel like it, is to love as God loves us, that is, to be present to God and one another. How can you say you love someone and not want to be present to them? It is not a matter of controlling the other, but merely being present to them. A child is comforted after an accident not by a bandage or medicine or treatment, as much as the hug and kiss of a parent who reassures them that everything will be alright. The silent language of a parent embracing their child tells them I am here. I will not leave you alone. That is why a toddler cries at the thought of going to sleep without the parent by their side, they are afraid they will be alone. Sometimes parents reassure that child with a nightlight. Isn t that what Christ has done for us? We stand before the darkness of our sins, past failures, sometimes serious sins, and even the specter of death which are darkness we cannot see through to the other side and we are afraid. God has given us his son, Jesus, as our nightlight. Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness of our souls and gives us the reassurance that he will never leave us. What a treasure we have! However, we are asked not just to be comforted by this spiritual presence; we are asked to be the light of Christ for others. Matthew s gospel spells that out for us in clear and difficult terms - love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you offer no resistance, go the extra mile, turn the other cheek, be willing to suffer for love of others. Love hurts. Which is easier to do, when insulted to shout an insult back or be quiet and walk away? When frustrated do you keep pursuing the solution the way you have always done something or can you be open to another way of looking at things? Does your spouse think you were Mr. or Mrs. RIGHT when they first met you, not knowing your first name was ALWAYS? Want to know how to stop hurting? Hug the ones you love. Read 1Corinthians 13. Say the Lord s Prayer and reflect on how those words apply to you. Say the Prayer of St. Francis. Forgive. Fr. Ken Fleck

2 We have another opportunity to Be a pencil in God s hand. Next weekend, February 18 and 19, we will be highlighting the Parish Life Commission. It s a small group, but in our video, we will also include pictures of some of the extra projects that are done here at St. George. These are groups that support outside projects that St. George helps fund. We are a vibrant and giving parish and our Ministry group has been trying to show all of our parishioners the Good News in action. Please continue to pray about your involvement here at St. George. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Love Your Neighbor As Yourself, was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our parish, our Archdiocese and throughout the world. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. After our parish goal of $48, is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. February 12, 2017 The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

6 Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education! Who Are the CWSF? Some of the ladies visit the sick and homebound, bringing Jesus in the Eucharist, some of the ladies care for husbands, or children or grandchildren, some of the ladies crochet or knit gorgeous prayer shawls, afghans, baby blankets, chemo caps, stuffed toys, some are old, some are young, many are inbetween, some are healthy, some have health issues, some have lost parents, spouses, children, close friends and beloved family members, some love and support family members who wear on their patience - day after day after day, some are forgetful, some have experienced hospital visits, rehab, using canes and walkers and wheelchairs, some are unable to be with us yet still create beautiful works of love from home, some are blessed with abundance and some are living carefully and frugally out of necessity, some have been in St George Parish all their lives while some have come recently to the parish, some have been with CWSF since the ministry began, some have just found us, some travel, some have moved away yet still come back to us, some bless our ministry with their gifts and talents in ways that are very visible to the group and to the parish, some bless our ministry in quiet ways that the Lord knows; we love to be together, we find strength in our prayers and in our friendships, we want to share our faith with you, through our prayers, and through the work of our hands. If you would like a blessed prayer shawl, call Pina Quatrini at (708) , or Maureen Cetera at (708) As always, we thank our precious donors who allow us to share "Hugs from God" free of charge! 7 Office of Human Dignity & Solidarity Immigration Ministry Saturday, February 18 6:30 to 8:00 am APOSTLES OF THE FAMILY Support the BRIDGE Act and Protect DACA Youth To remove DACA protections would put hundreds of thousands of young people at risk of deportation, cutting short their dreams of a better future Deport them, and we deport their potential to make our nation stronger we deport our future builders of bridges, teachers of children, savers of lives we deport our fundamental values as Americans. ~Cardinal Blase Cupich (01/09/17) Under the BRIDGE Act, young people who came to the United States as children would maintain their eligibility to work and live in the U.S. without the fear of deportation and family separation so long as they meet certain requirements. During last Saturday's session, we discussed how we can transform our families, following in the footsteps of the Holy Family. This week, we will continue our journey towards Nazareth. Our Lady gives us guidance through her apparitions to the saints. How can we transform our families by imitating her? Our video presentation will include: We Live in the Midst of a Struggle The Miraculous Medal: Recourse to Mary Lourdes: Promises and Petitions Fatima and the Apparition of the Holy Family Cultivating Love in the World Ministering to the Family Being Schooled at Nazareth this Lent All men are invited to join us whenever they can. Fun, food, fellowship and faith who could ask for more? That Man Is You! meets on Saturday mornings for breakfast in O Connell Hall at St. George School. All adult men, 18 and older, are invited to join us. To learn more about TMIY, please contact Don Budny at (708) ; dbudny3@aol.com or Gary Hendzell at (708) ; ghendzell@msn.com. Active Parishioner Status We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at St. George. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an active member of St. George. Because of the nature of our congregation, having so many visitors, it is difficult to know everyone. An active member of St. George Catholic Church: Is properly registered and supporting the Church. Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Participates in parish activities when possible. Uses the parish envelope system for donations. Adult children living at home are required to register separately from their parents as parishioners. While assessments of an inquirer s status will be made individually, the above are the main factors what will be considered in making that determination. Registration will take place next Sunday, February 19, 2017, after the 9:30 am Mass in the Parish Life Center, Meeting Rms. 1&2. February 12, 2017 The Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

9 PRO-LIFE BREMEN-ORLAND FAMILIES FOR LIFE You are invited to the monthly meeting of Bremen-Orland Families for Life on Monday, February 13 at 1:00 pm. It will be held at the Brementowne Manor located at Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park. We will plan for future activities and discuss current Pro-Life events and issues. For more information, call Bill Beckman at (708) or Lana Stack at (708) PROTECTING CATHOLIC HEALTH CARE THE CHALLENGES WE FACE The Multi-Parish Knowledge and Prayer Series is proud to present its February 2017 program. Assisted suicide, sterilizations, euthanasia, abortions, referrals, end of life counseling and care, birth control measures, IVF, tax exemptions, are just some of the issues being mandated, ordered or recommended by government regulations. How do Catholic hospitals, Catholic doctors, nurses and health care professionals comply with these mandates and remain faithful? How can hospitals continue to provide care without violating their core ethical and moral standards? Will Catholic hospitals even continue to exist? Will health care professionals be forced to violate their consciences to continue practicing? These are just some of the issues Rev. Michael Foley will address on Thursday, February 23 at 7:00 pm at Our Lady of The Woods Church, W. 131 st, Orland Park, IL. Fr. Foley, is a Chicago native, who graduated from St. Laurence High School, Loyola University and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Since being ordained in 1986 he has served as Pastor and associate Pastor in Hyde Park, Evergreen Park and Orland Park, becoming Pastor at Our Lady of the Woods in He is a dynamic speaker who can cut through the pyscho babble and get to the core of the issues. We are called to build a culture of encounter. Jesus made that clear from the way he lived, the message he preached. Pope Francis makes that clear by his own daily example. And we have a host of holy men and women who have come before us, who have gone to the margins of society so that every member of our human family might know the love of God. Now, it s our turn. With the spiritual pillars of Lent at our disposal, we set out on a 40-day journey, a journey of encounter with ourselves, our neighbors and our God. Through prayer, we encounter Christ, present in the faces of every member of human family, so often still walking that long road to Calvary. Through fasting, we encounter our own obstacles, those things about ourselves that prevent us from loving God and neighbor. Through almsgiving, we encounter our brothers and sisters around the world, asking what we can give up so that others might have a life to the fullest. Lent is our time to encounter, to cultivate a spirit of global solidarity. CRS Rice Bowl is our guide, a vehicle through which the stories of communities around the world can be shared, an invitation through which our prayers and Lenten sacrifices can change lives. How will you contribute to the culture of encounter this Lent? Questions? Call Jenny Luzzo at (708) CELL PHONES MUST BE PUT AWAY DURING ROUNDS! Get ready for the 2017 Trivia Night at St. George! Learn From the Master There was a man who lost a loved one. The man was very hurt and asked Jesus, Why did you take her to heaven and not me? Jesus answered him, You are not ready for heaven. The man asked Jesus what he must do to be ready. Jesus replied, You have heard the commandments I taught: You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39) The man asked Jesus, How do I learn to do this? Jesus said, Come and spend time with me and open your heart to me, and I will teach you. Jesus makes this invitation to all of us. He s there in the Holy Family Chapel waiting for us to come and open our hearts to Him, and we will learn how to be ready for heaven. This is not a one-time deal. It takes time. Jesus wants us to come often, so why not call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour every week with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Think of it as night school (or day school) where you can learn from the greatest Teacher that ever was or will be. Each class is filled with Our Lord s Love, but there is homework. We must go out and practice what we learn with others. Then we will be ready. Terry Dorencz 12 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

13 S I L E N C E by: Shusaku Endo Books are $9 and are available at the rectory for the next book discussion on Friday, April 21, "Silence I regard as a masterpiece, a lucid and elegant drama."-the New York Times Book Review Shusaku Endo is one of the most celebrated and well-known Japanese fiction writers of the twentieth century, and Silence is widely considered to be his great masterpiece. Father Rodrigues is an idealistic Portuguese Jesuit priest who, in the 1640s, sets sail for Japan on a determined mission to help the brutally oppressed Japanese Christians and to discover the truth behind unthinkable rumors that his famous teacher Ferreira has renounced his faith. Once faced with the realities of religious persecution Rodrigues himself is forced to make an impossible choice: whether to abandon his flock or his God. Winner of the 1966 Tanizaki Prize, Silence is Shusaku Endo's most highly acclaimed novel and a classic of its genre. It caused major controversy in Japan following its publication in Silence will soon be a major film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver. goodreads.com Friends of Jesus Projects Our fifth grade and sixth grade classes were given $1100 by an anonymous donor. The children worked together to complete 22 different projects within our community. Each project was given $50.00 with the condition that it be used in service of others. This was completed through the Friends of Jesus Project. Projects included donating wish-list items to Gigi s Playhouse, CTF Illinois, Together We Cope and art supplies for the Painted Turtle. Children chose to make a $50.00 donation to the Northern Illinois Food Bank which allowed them to purchase $ in food due to a matching grant during the month of December. While researching their charities, the children chose Northern Illinois Food Bank because it supplies our local food pantries. Many other worthy charities were also chosen. Other organizations wish lists included toys for children, items for adults, and supplies for the animal shelters. All of this was to help those people or animals in need of care, not for popularity, but for the joy of helping those in need. Students personally delivered their items or monetary donations to their chosen charities whenever possible. The fifth and sixth graders were humbled by the opportunity to make such generous donations to places that help people or animals. Students then wrote letters to the Friends of Jesus Project thanking them for this learning experience, explaining where they chose to donate the gifts, how it made them feel and what they learned while completing this project. 14 ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations.
