For many the Christmas celebrations begin today with relatives coming from out of town, dinners, parties and the exchange of gifts. It is important not to overlook the value of this fourth Sunday celebration. For some this is a season of sadness. They have lost a loved one recently and feel their absence even more. Others have received a bad medical report and have been told their time is now measured for this world. Still others feel the world has left them behind as they suffer from depression, the loss of employment and income or a continuing cycle of poverty. For these just described there seems to be no hope. It is a time of sadness and a feeling of isolation. It does not need to be that way. Relieving all these problems is not the answer. We all must die some day. Most will have prior knowledge from a professional medical diagnosis. And Jesus reminds us in the gospels, The poor you will always have with you. (Matt 26:11. and Deuteronomy 15: 7-11.) What gives us hope? The real presence gives hope - Emmanuel, which means God is with us. What brings the greatest joy to children, the gifts under the tree on Christmas day or the family which shares the day together? Which brings you the greatest satisfaction, choice wines and foods at a restaurant or the family gathering to share what each brings to the feast at someone s home? The greatest hunger of the human heart is the need to love and be loved. St. John reminds us in his gospel, God so loved the world that he sent his only son (John 3:16) For this reason we need to celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent in joyful anticipation of the Second Coming of Christ as well as Christmas. God not only sent his only Son as a sign of his love, he sent you and me. God loves us as much as his only begotten Son. We play just as important a role in salvation history as did Jesus. Too easily we dismiss the movie, It s a Wonderful Life to Christmas schmaltz. It points towards a profound meaningful purpose of this gift of life. God loves us and put us here for a purpose. It is my prayer and hope for all our parishioners that you find that purpose and meaning in life, dedicate yourself to that, and see your life transformed by the birth of Christ. You are the sign of God s love. --Fr. Ken Fleck

I will not be home on December 22, December 29 and January 5 since I have my holy hours from 7 to 8 pm. OPLATKI CHRISTMAS WAFERS Christmas Eve always has occupied a special place for those of Polish and Eastern European heritage. Probably more than any other set of customs, the tradition of the Oplatki wafers has continued to strengthen a sense of religious and national identities. The Oplatki are large rectangular wafers embossed with figures of the Christ Child or other nativity scenes. Each member of the family shares a part of their wafer with those at the dinner table and wishes them a Blessed Christmas and New Year. Please see Robert Mockus, Music Director, after weekend Masses, or come to the rectory office during the week to obtain the wafers; free-will donations will be accepted. ST. 5 PLANNED GIVING - Gifts for St. George Parish in Your Will When making a gift for St. George Parish in your will or living trust, we recommend that you use the following terminology to ensure your gift is applied according to your wishes: Clause for a gift to St. George Parish I give (amount/percentage/asset/item) to The Catholic Bishop of Chicago, Tax ID # , located in Chicago, Illinois for St. George Parish located in Tinley Park, IL Please consult an attorney when preparing legal documents. For more information about leaving a donation to St. George Parish in your will, please contact Elin Schriver at (312) or eschriver@archchicago.org Why are Gifts of Appreciated Assets so Valuable? What is the best asset a person can give to St. George Parish? From a tax perspective, gifts of securities, real estate or other assets that have gone up in value are the hands-down winners. Why? Because donors receive a double tax benefit: They can deduct the full fair market value of their appreciated assets - if owned more than one year - and they save again by avoiding all capital gains taxes on their paper profit. Please call Elin Schriver in the Archdiocesan Office of Stewardship and Development at (312) ; she would be happy to discuss your gift in a greater detail. Income for Life for You Benefit for the Future of St. George Parish A charitable gift annuity is an extraordinary way to make a gift to St. George, increase your income and slice your tax bill - all in one transaction! The Archdiocese of Chicago s charitable gift annuity program was created as a service to our parishioners who have expressed a desire to make a gift of significance to their Parish while still retaining income from the gift during their lives. A charitable gift annuity provides: Income for Life - at attractive payout rates; Tax Deductible Savings - a significant portion of what you donate is a deductible charitable gift; Tax-Free Payout - a significant portion of your payments is tax-free; Personal Satisfaction - knowing that your gift will benefit St. George for years to come. Gift annuity rates are determined by the age of the person or persons who receive the income payments. Call Elin Schriver in the Archdiocesan Office of Stewardship and Development at (312) ; she would by happy to discuss in greater detail and send you a free gift illustration. As you all know, Congress and President Obama reinstated a law allowing you to make a tax-free gift to support the Church from your IRA. The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 made permanent the IRA charitable rollover. Donors aged 70½ or older who transfer up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities do not have to pay income tax on the money. This donation can be all or part of your required minimum distribution, (RMD). You will need to act fast to take advantage of the opportunity for the 2016 tax year. Funds must transfer directly from your IRA custodian to The Catholic Bishop of Chicago, 835 North Rush Street, Chicago, IL in order to avoid a taxable event. You may designate your gift to St. George Parish. A recap of the IRA charitable rollover rules: If you are 70½ or older, you can give up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to charities such as the Archdiocese. Your qualified charitable contribution can satisfy all or part of the required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA for the year. The Tax ID # is This opportunity applies to both Traditional and Roth IRAs but not to other types of retirement plans. You pay no income tax on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions. The transfer may be made in addition to any other charitable giving you have planned. The gift needs to be made by December 31, 2016, if you want your gift to qualify this year. You must distribute the gift amount directly from your IRA. It is important that you do not withdraw the funds prior to making your gift. Instructions on how to make your IRA donation to St. George Parish: 1. Contact your IRA plan administrator and advise him/her of your intention to make the transfer of funds. 2. Deadline: Make your contribution by December 31, 2016, in order to qualify for this year s tax savings. 3. Information for your plan administrator: Tax ID # To send a check: Distribute directly from your IRA Make Payable to: The Catholic Bishop of Chicago Mailing Address: Attention: Elin Schriver, Archdiocese of Chicago 835 N. Rush Street Chicago, Il Please eschriver@archchicago.org with any questions. December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent 5

6 Christmas Cards for Prisoners, A Ministry of CWSF I was in prison and you visited me Matthew 25:37. Once again St. George is working with Kolbe House, the Prison Ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago, to let prisoners know that they are not forgotten. We can help a prisoner reach out at Christmas time - perhaps saving a relationship, or strengthening a bond - by providing new Christmas cards and new stamps. The Christmas cards and stamps we share will be given to inmates at Cook County Prison. This is a community of over ten thousand people who, because of their wrongdoing, are detached from the world, from freedom, from all those they love. If you want to visit a prisoner, here are some ways to help, and to show love and forgiveness: 1) Donate blank Christmas cards with stamps (new cards, new stamps and stamps may not be attached to the cards) so that inmates can send cards to their loved ones. 2) Donate stamps which we will give to prisoners to mail their own Christmas cards, or donate funds to purchase stamps. 4) Donate blank, unused Christmas cards. Please leave new cards in one of the baskets at the entrances to church; deliver stamps and cash donations to the rectory c/o CWSF. Please do not seal any Christmas card envelopes. Do not attach stickers or stamps to the Christmas cards or envelopes. Please leave your cards in one of the boxes located at our church entrances. Leave stamps or donations (checks made payable to Kolbe House) in an envelope marked "Christmas Cards for Prisoners" at the rectory or in the collection basket. If you have questions, please call Maureen Cetera at (708) Thank you for your goodness in visiting a prisoner! Thank you for supporting senior religious. A sister from Indiana writes, Because of your kindness, our elderly sisters will have the comfort, security and joy of living out their remaining years here in their home. You truly honor them and their many years of service by your generosity. Religious across the United States off sincere thanks for your generosity to last week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious. 7 The Good News at St. George School! St. George School evening at Barnes & Noble was a huge, fun success! The bookstore was filled with happy children, parents and grandparents participating in a variety of activities, some of which were face painting, crafts, storytelling, Christmas caroling, shopping & gift wrapping. The Christmas spirit of love and joy was spread to all who entered the store. Our school received a portion of the profits. Thank you to everyone who participated. Merry Christmas! Our children in Caring Hearts Club sang their hearts out and brought so much love and joy to residents at Providence and Autumn Leaves facilities. The older students, with their stronger voices, helped the younger ones in singing. The little ones were quick to share their hugs with the elderly who received them warmly. It was beautiful to see our children bring the love of Jesus to the elderly. Kind, gentle hearts are what our faith is all about. December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent 7

"I like to envision the whole world as a jigsaw puzzle If you look at the whole picture, it is overwhelming and terrifying, but if you work on your little part of the jigsaw and know that people all over the world are working on their little bits, that s what will give you hope." Jane Goodall "Provocative...profound...Goodall simply and touchingly invites readers to follow her spiritual footsteps." New York Times Book Review Discussion on Friday, January 27, 2017 (Date Change) Used books are available at the Rectory for $6.00 "Her revolutionary studies of Tanzania's chimpanzees forever altered our definition of "humanity." Now, intriguing as always, Jane Goodall explores her deepest convictions in a heartfelt memoir that takes her from the London Blitz to Louis Leaky's famous excavations in Africa and then into the forests of Gombe. From the unforgettable moment when a wild chimpanzee gently grasps her hand to the terror of a hostagetaking and the sorrow of her husband's death. Here, thoughtfully exploring the challenges of both science and the soul, she offers an inspiring, optimistic message as profound as the knowledge she brought back from the forests, and that gives us all...reason for hope." 10 At the beginning of this third millennium, you too, young people, are called to proclaim the message of the Gospel with the testimony of your lives. The Church needs your energies, your enthusiasm, your youthful ideals to ensure that the Gospel permeates the fabric of society and inspires a civilization of authentic justice and love without discrimination. Now more than ever, in a world all too often deprived of light and the courage of noble ideals, it is not the time to be ashamed of the Gospel (cf. Rom 1: 16). Rather, it is time to preach it from the rooftops (cf. Mt 10: 27). The Pope, your Bishops, the whole Christian community are counting on your commitment, on your generosity and following you with confidence and hope! John Paul II, Meeting with the Catholic Youth of Switzerland, 5 June 2004 We are still looking to hire missionaries! Contact us if interested. As a Totus Tuus missionary, you commit to traveling in a four-person team, teaching, evangelizing and spreading the gospel in parishes for six weeks. Missionaries also complete two weeks of training in the curriculum and program, and have a break during the week of the July 4th holiday. Finally, missionaries also take part in a mid-summer and summer-end spiritual retreat. Anyone who has discovered Christ must lead others to him. A great joy cannot be kept to oneself. It has to be passed on. Pope Benedict XVI, Homily at the World Youth Day 2005 closing mass. Totus Tuus missionaries are faith-filled college students and seminarians who are willing to give themselves totally to Christ and His Church for the summer, by preaching the Gospel to children and teenagers. Young Adult Missionaries must be Confirmed, practicing Catholics who are faithful to the teachings of the Magisterium, willing to live in the community of their team, be committed to a personal and communal prayer life, be prepared to make sacrifices through a rigorous daily schedule and also be prepared to have fun. As part of the Totus Tuus team, a missionary has the tremendous privilege and challenge of spreading the Gospel throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. This challenge is accepted with great joy! The teams come to know and love the vitality, faith and courage of all the youth they encounter. These youth are the future and hope of the next millennium. Today s youth are hungry for a greater understanding of the Truth contained in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, as guided by the Magisterium. The youth are seeking not just role models, but heroes who are striving to live and proclaim, Lord, I will be totally yours. With joy and honor, Totus Tuus teams serve these youth by sharing the gifts that God has given to them. As a Missionary we will provide housing, a $2,000 stipend and meals. If you are interested in applying to be a Totus Tuus Missionary, please go to chicagopriest.com and click on Totus Tuus Chicago in the upper right hand corner. Applications are due by the middle of March. After your application is reviewed, we will contact you for an interview. We genuinely appreciate your interest in serving in the Totus Tuus Ministry! Please also include a Referral form with your application. Four-person teams will be selected after the first week of training. A Gift Exchange Well, advent is just about over. The shopping is done, the tree is decorated, and the gifts are all under the tree, crowding the little manger scene. But some gifts are not under the tree. They are gifts to you and yours. These gifts are at the Holy Family Chapel. They are gifts of peace and love and grace that Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament wants to give to you. Come to the chapel and graciously accept these gifts, and, in exchange, offer the Blessed Sacrament the gift of your love. Then, if you re not already a member of the A-Team (A for Adoration), call Bill Beckman at and sign up to spend an hour every week with The Blessed Sacrament. Then you can exchange gifts with the Blessed Sacrament all year long. Terry Dorencz 10 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

Reminder that we are still taking donations for the mitten tree or for the Confirmation service retreat; items may be brought to class on January 4. Details below Advent A Journey Of Solidarity with Families: Make Straight the Paths Office of Human Dignity & Solidarity Immigration Ministry Reflections The Fourth Week of Advent December 18-December 24 God Sends us a sign -Light three purple candles and one pink candle during the fourth week of Advent~ "The virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel." ~Isaih 7:14 DONATIONS REQUESTED Seventh and eighth grade students (along with a parent or sponsor) from St. George School and St. George Religious Education Program will be participating in service activities on Sunday, January 8, in preparation for Confirmation. We are reinforcing the notion that service to others is an essential part of our Catholic identity. Our activities will revolve around the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The call to mercy is a baptismal call, not just one that we responded to in the Jubilee Year! Among our activities, we will be making sandwiches and assembling lunches for Port Ministries in Chicago's Back of the Yards community, as well as packets of toiletries to be sent to Catholic Charities. We would like to ask the parish to support our efforts. If you are able to donate any of the following items, you may drop them in the Religious Education Office during our regular office hours, or return them to the tables in church. Please mark the items "For Religious Ed." NEEDED ITEMS: Individually wrapped snack packets (granola bars, crackers, chips, fruit snacks, cookies, etc.) Cases of bottled water Toiletries in any size packaging, including travel size (toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, brushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) Gallon-sized freezer/storage bags We thank you in advance for your generosity! MANY BLESSINGS!!! Renewed by God's promise from Gaudete Sunday, we wait for a sign...a sign that we are acting with justice, a sign that the lowly are being exalted, a sign that God is with us - Emmanuel. Fortunately, we know that the sign comes quietly in the night; we have heard the story of Jesus' birth. But, do we recognize when the sign comes quietly from another land, in the soft whimper of a child refugee who has seen horror or in the hard work of a migrant parent trying to feed a family? Do we act as a sign to them that God is with them? During this last week of Advent we are reminded that God is near. We are told to look. Look for the signs of Emmanuel. But, we must also act - be that sign of Emmanuel; be that sign to those on the margins, to the refugee and migrant. But, we must also be that sign to the deaf so their ears are cleared and to the blind so their eyes are opened. Challenge the systems that continue to tell God's children they are not welcome, that continue to say God is not here. We know the story of "God with us," but the story is not in the past; it continues today. How will you be that sign of "God with us" to the world? PRAYER: Jesus, Emmanuel, be with us. Be near us. Be. We have fallen; we have been lost; we have been afraid, be with us. Be near us. Be. We search for you. We look for you in the refugee and migrant, be with us. Be near us. Be. Fourth Week of Advent: Wait in Joyful Hope Join the Prayer Vigil at the Broadview Detention Center, 1930 S. Beach St., Broadview, Fridays at 7:15 am or pray in solidarity with those being deported. 14 ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Although sacramental needs of patients are administered by the hospital chaplain or by a local priest, in an emergency, St. George clergy will respond to sacramental needs. Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations. Please remember St. George Parish when planning your estate or preparing your will. Wedding arrangements must be made four months in advance of the wedding date. You must be a registered parishioner for six months prior to making arrangements. Please schedule your church date before reserving your hall. Bulletin information provides updates on parish and Archdiocesan events. Please submit articles or recommendations to bulletin@stgeorge60477.org by Monday noon before publication date. Because of space limitations, articles will be limited to St. George activities and information, as well as Archdiocesan events and news.
