1 September 10, 2017 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2017 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME The Road Less Traveled The gospel today, Matt 18:15-20 teaches an important lesson about judging others and how to take the high road. All too often issues are swept under the rug, ignored, wished to go away, or worse yet, discussed with others - gossip. None of these options will resolve the issue or bring about reconciliation. Jesus response is to deal with the issue directly. If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. In our consumer-driven, idiosyncratic society that has an insatiable appetite for the sensational, most will choose a one sided presentation of the issue to friends or colleagues in gossip or water cooler conversation. What do you do in situations like this? The other extreme, that is just as popular and equally frustrating, is the legal system. Hire a lawyer. While it has created a whole profession to settle disputes and has spawned jokes at lawyers expense, it is not the first choice for men and women of faith. Where is our faith when we have to settle a disagreement? How do you deal with issues that come up between you and neighbors, friends, fellow workers, classmates, and family members? It seems we have lost the art of conversations and learning to both talk and listen, participating in the give-and-take of good communication. This will allow both parties to express their point of view while the other truly listens so as to respond to what was said and not what went through their mind while the other was speaking. Life is difficult. As Christians we are challenged by Jesus to take the road less traveled. We are given an example of turning the other cheek and going the extra mile. Which of these metaphors best describes your way of dealing with those who cause you stress? This is more than an article that explores the psychology of disagreeing. This is a call for each person to delve into their soul and reconsider their response to disagreements beginning in the family and extending into our daily life and conflicts. Charity begins at home and moms and dads set the example for their children to follow. Do your children see and hear you pray for guidance? We would take fewer high blood pressure pills if we took the high road often called The Road Less Traveled and took our faith more seriously and frequently. Last week Jesus challenged us saying, Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. What will it take for you to be reconciled with those who have offended you or whom you have offended? We must take our faith seriously and get involved in sharing our faith, talking about it, bringing others closer to Christ, and sharing in the ministries of St. George. We are building a beautiful museum for a future generation. Vatican II clearly set the challenge before us, The Church is the People of God. Fr. Ken Fleck

3 DEACON JOE TRUESDALE I grew up on the south side of Chicago in St. Leo s Parish where I attended grammar school. I graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 1961 and then attended St. Mary of the Lake Junior College Division for a semester. I transferred to the University of Illinois Chicago where I studied engineering and accounting, but the seminary did not prepare me in the necessary math and science and I left college to begin an apprenticeship as an electrician in Local 134, IBEW. In those days, when you left college, the college immediately notified your draft board and my apprenticeship was put on hold as I was soon drafted. From 1965 to 1967, I served in the United States Army as a Personnel Management Specialist. After separation from the Army, I continued my career in the electrical industry. The apprenticeship program gave me a better preparation for returning to night school in the late 70 s. I received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with honors from Illinois Institute of Technology in I left the field and became a project manager for an electrical contractor. I retired December 31, Forty years after leaving the seminary, I realized my vocation was not to priesthood, but to the diaconate. I was ordained to the Order of Deacon on May 24, 2003 by Cardinal George. I graduated from Loyola University, Chicago with a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies in May of For thirteen years, I served at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, a year at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish and now have been assigned by Cardinal Cupich to St. George. I serve our parish as a Deacon and our vicariate as Vicariate Diaconate Coordinator as a member of the Diaconate Council of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Vicariate V Episcopal team. I have been married to my wife, Mary, for over twenty-four years. Mary attended St. Bernadette and St. Christina grammar schools, Academy of Our Lady High School and Northern Illinois University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. Mary is an artist and teaches art classes at the Lockport and Orland Park park districts. At the time I was in formation, wives were invited to participate in the process to the full extent of their husbands. Mary did, and as she says she did not do it to be a public minister, but to know what I was getting us into. She received the same Certificate of Studies from the University of St. Mary of the Lake as I did. Mary has served as a Minister of Care and substitute Eucharistic Minister. I look forward to getting to know and serve you, but I hope you will be patient with me as I try to remember names. Mary is excited about returning to St. George which was her parish for over twenty years. Deacon Joe September 10, 2017 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

4 Movie Night! Presenting...UNDER THE SAME MOON Friday, September 15, :00 pm in the Rectory Meeting Room Refreshments and great conversation! Families invited! Rated PG13 In her feature film debut; director Patricia Riggen weaves parallel stories into a vividly textured tapestry of yearning and devotion that portrays a child's courage and tenacity; and a mother's sacrifice. Nine-year-old Carlos aka Carlitos (Alonso) is one of the countless children left behind by parents who come to the U.S. seeking a way to provide for their families. His mother; Rosario (del Castillo) has worked illegally as a domestic in Los Angeles for four years; sending money home to her son and mother to give them a chance at a better life. When the death of his grandmother leaves young Carlitos alone; he takes his fate into his own hands and heads north across the border to find his mother. As he journeys from his rural Mexican village to the L.A. barrio; Carlitos faces seemingly insurmountable obstacles with a steely determination and unfettered optimism that earn him the grudging respect and affection of a reluctant protector; a middle -aged migrant worker named Enrique (Derbez). The unlikely pair finds its way from Tucson to East L.A.; but the only clue Carlitos has to his mother's whereabouts is her description of the street corner from which she has called him each Sunday for the last four years. Unaware that Rosario is only hours away from returning to Mexico to be with her son; Carlitos and Enrique desperately comb the vast unfamiliar city for a place he has seen only in his imagination. Children s Liturgy Just a short note: The children s liturgy of the word will be in full swing as soon as our newly remodeled church opens. We look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces, hopefully within the first few weeks of October. Thank you for your patience and hope to see you then. Dawn Bartos Initial Training for Ministers of the Eucharist (for new Ministers of Communion) Two Mondays, September 11 and 18, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at St. Julie Parish 7399 W. 159 th St., Tinley Park, IL (708) Margie Guadagno Through prayer, reflection and praxis, participants will explore what it means to be an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist in the 21st Century. In Session One there will be a brief overview of the history and theology of the Eucharist. We will also explore the development of the role of the laity in the liturgical life of the Church. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences of Eucharist and worship with one another. Session Two will address the call to ministry and what it means to be a Minister of the Eucharist in the Church of today s world. To register contact Vicariate V Ministry Commission Coordinator, Kathy McNicholas at kmcnicholas@incarnationcatholic.com or call (708) or register on the Vicariate Website Renovation Update Today you are invited after Mass to sign your name on the floor of the church, write a prayer on the floor and see the colors of the walls as it is being painted. We are on schedule for completion by October 15. The walls of the nave are painted. Most of the ceiling is painted. Work is in progress in the sanctuary area. The heating system has been completely replaced. New insulated copper pipes feed the west addition. No radiators are in place yet. Replacing the A/C units will be next. The steeple has posed a problem for us as it is covered with leadcoated copper siding. The dark discoloration is the oxidation of the lead coating. Having consulted many experts in roofing, siding and painting, our conclusion is that to make our steeple look appealing, it must be stripped of the current cladding and covered with long lasting materials such as baked enamel finish aluminum. We are soliciting bids. It will cost more than first estimated. Many thanks, to all who are keeping their pledge to our Renew My Church campaign. For those who have yet to make a pledge, your contributions will help us stay on budget. Call the rectory office to make a pledge (708) Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

5 NCYC - Indianapolis - November 16-18, 2017 The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) is an exciting, biennial three-day experience of prayer, community and empowerment for Catholic teenagers and their adult chaperones. Teens and their group leaders enjoy speakers, workshops, live music, electrifying large sessions, an amazing closing liturgy and exploring faith in a supportive environment. Perhaps best of all teens are part of an enormous community of peers who love Jesus, who embrace their Catholic heritage and aren t afraid to show it! Teens and youth leaders can together harness the experience and bring it back to their parishes. The thematic park is a unique venue incorporating traditional exhibits with interactive, educational and recreational activities. A must see!! If your teen is interested in attending this wonderful event, or you would like to be a chaperone, please call Maureen Cetera at (708) Maureen can answer any questions you may have and guide you through registration. High School Confirmation Program St. Stephen will begin a high school Confirmation program on Wednesday, September 27 at 4:15 pm for teens in Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior years of high school. The program will meet weekly until the Sacrament is conferred upon the teens on March 10, 2018 by Bishop Kane. Topics that will be covered will help teens relate to being a Catholic in our modern society. Students will discuss elements of the Catholic faith and the significance of moral, theological, and scriptural issues that are a part of every committed and confirmed Catholic s life. There are three Sacraments in which people become full members of the Catholic Church - Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation. Confirmation is an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and completes the good work that was begun in Baptism and that is continually strengthened in receiving the Eucharist. Students will be required to do service projects and attend a retreat in preparation for the Sacrament. It is also expected that each student will research and prepare a report on the saint name chosen for his/her Confirmation name. Registration forms can be picked up at the St. Stephen Religious Education office or found online at under Education tab, where the form can be printed and returned to the St. Stephen Religious Education office. If you have any questions, please contact Barbara Black at Barbara@ststephentinley.com. The Coalwood Way - New Fall Book! by Homer Hickam Please pick up your copy of the book at the rectory for just $6! Join the book discussion! Friday, October 20, 2017, 7:00 pm Rectory Meeting Room In his bestselling memoir, Rocket Boys (which became the 1999 movie October Sky), former NASA engineer Hickam looked back at the mining town of Coalwood, W.Va., when the 1957 ascent of Sputnik prompted Sonny and his teenage pals to launch their own rockets and aim at the stars. This sequel is set in 1959, when Sonny is a high school senior, still sending up rockets at "Cape Coalwood," at local launches that became full-scale social events with numerous spectators: "Even the Big Creek cheerleaders came, dressed in full uniform." Hickam digs deeper into his own family life, recalling an ambivalent relationship with his father, the superintendent of the local mine: "My dad was, in many ways, [a] general, plotting strategy and tactics against an unyielding foe, the mine itself." Hearing the constant miner's cough in her own house, Hickam's mother, Elsie, wants to leave the coal dust-covered community for the "fresh, clean air" of Myrtle Beach, since "she knew very well lung spots never got smaller, only bigger," but Homer Sr. is determined to stay and save the mine. Amid the resulting household tension, Sonny suffers from an inexplicable sadness, despite his growing relationship with a local girl and his various science and writing projects. His recollections are occasionally reminiscent of the youthful exploits in tales by Jean Shepherd and Ray Bradbury, but Hickam's voice is his own. Recalling a lost era, the transition between small-town life and the dawning of the new technological age, he brings his American hometown to life with vivid images, appealing characters and considerable literary magic. 12 Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education! God gave each of us to the world in this time and place for a purpose. Some of us know exactly why we are here, some have not a clue, and there is a whole range of understanding in between. We have an opportunity to learn our purpose from others who share time and space with us; we can use the wisdom we have been granted to help others understand their purpose as well. There is beauty and power in making an effort to understand ourselves and each other. One way that our world seeks to understand is through generation analysis, as there are psychological and sociological dimensions in the sense of belonging and identity that define generations. People alive in our world today can be categorized by their generation, and each generation has specific characteristics. Years are reported differently in different resources, but loosely, these are the generations that we live with: G.I. Generation: Born 1901 to 1924 Traditionalists, or Silent Generation: Born 1925 to 1944 Baby Boomers: Born 1945 to 1964 Generation X: Born 1965 to 1984 Millennials, or Generation Y: Born 1985 to 1999 Generation Z, igen, Post Millenials or Homeland: Born 2000 and later The best ways to communicate with people of different generations vary; some appreciate a written card or letter, a telephone call, a personal visit, an , a text, a skype call, a snap chat, etc. We hope that everyone would appreciate a Hug from God, and that is something you can provide freely, thanks to many generous donors, and hard-working prayer shawl ministers at St. George. Consider reaching out to someone of your own generation, or select someone special of another generation, and give them the promise of your prayers, and a lovely, unique shawl. Call Pina Quatrini at (708) , or Maureen Cetera at (708) ; we can leave a shawl at the rectory for you to collect at your convenience. With Love! Thursday Mornings in September: 9:30-11:30 am in the Quiet Room 9/14/2017 St. Rita Novena (followed by Ladies Lunch on your own) 9/21/2017 Prayer Shawl Ministry 9/28/2017 Prayer Shawl Ministry "Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect" Romans 12:2. PRO-LIFE BREMEN-ORLAND FAMILIES FOR LIFE You are invited to the monthly meeting of Bremen-Orland Families for Life on Monday, September 11 at 1:00 pm. It will be held at the Brementowne Manor located at Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park. We will plan for future activities and discuss current Pro-Life events and issues. For more information, call Bill Beckman at (708) or Lana Stack at (708) THERE IS HOPE! SUCCESS STORIES, UPDATES, AND ACTIONS PLANS FROM ILLINOIS RIGHT TO LIFE Get the inside scoop on Pro-Life happenings in Illinois. What s going on in Springfield? Learn how we are taking back Illinois through groundbreaking new Pro-Life education. Hear behind the scenes stories about the women and men they have counseled. Find out what Illinois Planned Parenthood does not want you to hear. Find out why the Pro-Life movement in Illinois is stronger than ever and how you can help. Regina D Amico, Program Manager at Illinois Right to Life, will be presenting this hope-filled message at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 14, at St. Bernard s Parish, W. 143 St., Homer Glen, IL. Bring your friends and family. Hospitality to follow the program. LIFE CHAIN 2017 Please plan to attend the 28th annual Life Chain on Sunday October 1 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. Life Chain consists of forming a line of people along a busy street (in this case, 159th Street). Each person holds a sign that states a truth about abortion (Abortion Kills Children, Abortion Hurts Women, etc.). To seek a renewal of respect for life in our nation, it is more important than ever to show our support for mothers and their preborn children. Since Life Chain is our nation's largest Pro-Life event, it is a great way for your entire family to support respect for life. ORLAND PARK 40 DAYS FOR LIFE A 40 Days for Life prayer campaign is scheduled for Planned Parenthood in Orland Park from September 27 through November 5. St. George is sponsoring both Monday, October 9 and Monday, October 23. Please mark your calendar and plan to sign up for one or more hours between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm, if possible on one of the St. George dates, to join this local campaign to end abortion. Orland Park joins the national call for 40 days of prayer and fasting that will take place at 8 locations in Illinois and over 370 around our nation and beyond. 13 Dear Parishioners of St. George, Come and join a choir this fall! Rehearsals are starting up again and even though our Church is still under construction, we'll be back home there soon singing praises to the Lord as always. This December 3, we have the Southwest Symphony Orchestra paying us a visit and it would be great to have a ton of singers to greet them. They have challenged us to sing some difficult music with them and I know we can meet that challenge. With a handy rehearsal CD, we'll be singing all hours of the day and night. Please RSVP to the group leader of your choice. See you at practice! Mother of God we entrust you the hopes of all the world s migrants and refugees and the aspirations of the communities which welcome them, so that we may all learn to love the other, the stranger, as ourselves. Pope Francis The Dream Act of 2017, S. 1615, was recently introduced in the Senate. If passed into law, this bipartisan bill would protect immigrant youth who entered the U.S. as children with conditional permanent resident status and a path to full lawful permanent residency and eventual citizenship. This includes the 780,000 young people who received temporary relief from deportation and employment eligibility through the Department of Homeland Security DACA program. ACTION: The Catholic Church believes in protecting the dignity of every human person and has long supported DREAM- ERS. Ask your senators to co-sponsor the Dream Act of 2017, by visiting the USCCB website For additional ways to advocate for immigrants and refugees visit: We invite those who have lost children of any age to join us for a special Mass honoring their memory and praying for eternal peace. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday September 30 at 8:30 am at St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Also joining us will be Nancy Loeffler, author of The Alchemy of Grief. As a mother, herself who lost her daughter tragically, she understands grief and will speak about transforming grief thru the wisdom of your heart. Choral & Guitar Group - Mondays 7:30 pm - Cheryl Rowland (708) Children's Choir - Tuesdays 6 pm - Fran Ward (708) Adult Choir - Wednesdays 7 pm - Robert Mockus (773) Handbell Choir - Thursdays 7:30 pm - Robert Mockus (773) Teen Choir - Thursdays 7 pm - Fran Fancsali (708) CATECHETICAL SUNDAY Next Sunday, September 17, is recognized by the USCCB as Catechetical Sunday. The theme outlined this year is, Living as Missionary Disciples. This highlights the need for each and every one of us to live out our baptismal call to serve others and to spread the love and compassion of our God. All catechists, Catholic school teachers, Youth Ministry volunteers, Children s Liturgy of the Word volunteers, SPRED helpers, RCIA team members, and anyone involved in a parish catechetical ministry will be invited to stand at Mass next Sunday to receive a special blessing. Each family will be encouraged to take a prayer card with them at the end of Mass next weekend. Let us each pledge to LIVE AS MISSIONARY DISCIPLES! Please join us at St. Francis of Assisi South Wolf Road, Orland Park, IL. September 10, 2017 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 13
