The little girl pressed her nose to the window and stared wide-eyed at the goodies inside. Her mother gave her a dollar and told her, I ll wait out here, and you go inside and spend it however you want. The girl anxiously went inside. In a little while she came back out, still clutching the dollar, walked past her mother, and over to a blind man on the corner selling pencils. The little girl put the dollar in the cup and took out a pencil. The two continued their walk, the little girl clutching her new pencil with a smile, the mother so proud she could hardly keep her feet on the sidewalk. Life is like that little girl s dollar. God gives us our life to spend however we want, but we can only spend it once. Sometimes we make God proud, sometimes not so proud. Why not spend a little of it giving it back to Our Lord? Come to the Holy Family Chapel and spend some time with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. He has loads of graces for us just for the asking. Come and ask the Blessed Sacrament for the help and graces to spend our life wisely. You will leave feeling a warmth in your heart like the little girl with the pencil. And while your at it, call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour each week with the Blessed Sacrament. Don t look at it as spending time, but investing the time building a friendship that will last forever. Terry Dorencz 2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

3 MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2018 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME There is none so blind as he who will not see. I'm sure you've heard this classic proverb many times. Yet, what makes a proverb oft quoted is the fact that it states an important truth, and one of which we must be reminded often. It's easy for us to think that we know it all. It's hard to admit that we don't know something. Sometimes I wonder if it's harder to admit it to others or to ourselves. We like to think we're in control and we abhor weakness and ignorance. Yet it's interesting to notice that children don't seem to have this problem. Young children will constantly ask questions because they want to know the world and its wonders. It s interesting to me, as I ve moved through various academic programs, that the smartest professors that I ve met aren t the arrogant ones. There are plenty of arrogant people in academia, don t misunderstand me. Yet the smartest are the most humble, and also they are often the easiest with whom to work. You see, they are constantly looking for new ideas and new understanding and want to learn from everyone. They recognize just how little they know and they sincerely want to learn as much as they can, as well as to pass it on to others. The same is true in the world. The smartest people recognize that they still need to learn more and more. Indeed, psychological studies have shown us, time and again, that the least competent people think that they are experts and the most skilled individuals in a field believe that they are average or below. This makes sense when we look at today s Gospel. The blind man, Bartimeaus, cries out to Jesus that he wants to see. The crowd rebukes him and tells him to be quiet. Why do they tell him to be quiet? Is it because they don t yet have enough compassion on him? Well, I suppose that s part of it. But, I suspect there s more to this story. I think that the people in the crowd don t want to acknowledge their own spiritual blindness. If Jesus lets this man see, then he isn t just a wise teacher. He truly is of God. And that means that the crowd will have to follow him, not themselves. God is at work in our world. We can see him at work if we ask him to cure our blindness. I challenge each of you, and myself, to ask God today to help us to see. What blindness do you need cured? Fr. Brendan Guilfoil Bible Study of the Gospel of John Athletics is looking for scorekeepers for the upcoming winter season. Scorekeepers must be high school or college age. Pay is $10 per hour. Please contact Kelly Murray stgeorgead@outlook.com to apply. Winter season runs November 1 - March 1. We are also seeking volunteer volleyball coaches for the girls program. The season runs 11/1-3/1. Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 pm, Cahill Center, Meeting Rm. 2 Now-November 13 Would you like to grow in your relationship with Jesus? In this study we will focus on Jesus s encounters with eight people throughout the Gospel of John: the woman at the well, Nicodemus, Lazarus and others. As we read how John witnessed these encounters we will personally encounter Jesus Christ and grow in our relationship with Him. We will follow The Turning Point, A Gospel of John Bible study from Dynamic Catholic. You can purchase a participant s workbook on line at dynamiccatholic.com; however, it is not required in order to participate in the study. THE SOURCE AND SUMMIT Saturday, November 3 6:30 to 8:00 am You can t have a Catholic men s program without talking about the Eucharist! All Saints & All Souls Days This week the church celebrates 2 beautiful feast days; All Saints Day (a Holy Day of Obligation) and All Souls Day. Both of these days remind us that we are still connected to those who have passed from this world and moved on to the next. As we honor those who have found their reward in Heaven let us remember to pray for those who are still waiting in purgatory. As a little girl, my Grandma would remind us how important it was to pray for those in purgatory because they were often forgotten, in fact from Nov. 1-8 we can receive a plenary indulgence for a soul in purgatory. For more information on this visit and search Help the Holy Souls! Mass and confession times can be found in the bulletin or on our parish website. 8 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

9 St. George Parish has been truly blessed by Fran Ward and her longtime inspired direction of our Children s Choir. Fran has now moved on to other projects, so we must warmly thank her for the many great memories of Christmas pageants past and the wonderful classic songs at Sunday Mass! So now we are seeking a new director to lead our children in song and inspire our parishioners. Some musical background is a good idea, and a passion to lead the kids is most important. Please contact Robert Mockus at (773) or rmockus@stgeorge60477.org if you are interested. All Souls Purgatorial Society During November and throughout the upcoming year, we will offer twenty masses for our Purgatorial Society. There are envelopes at the entrances of Church. 11 Hand-carved olive wood gifts from the Holy Land: proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land. Did you know that 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood? The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Issam from Star of Bethlehem Group came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic Schools and clinics in the Holy Land. Star of Bethlehem has been approved by many bishops, and diocese of Jerusalem. Please take a look at those beautiful artifacts November 10 and 11 here at St. George Parish. A Sweet Deal for St. George from Bakers Square! We are participating in the Sweet Returns program. Val was working as a land girl when the Americans arrived at the nearby airfield in Mike, a young American airman, came into her life soon after, and so too did Peter Woodhouse, a dog badly treated on a neighboring farm and taken in by her aunt. Little persuasion was needed for Mike to take Peter Woodhouse to the airbase and over time he became the mascot of the American squad, flying with them whenever their Mosquitoes took to the skies. When their plane is shot down over Holland both Mike and Peter Woodhouse are feared lost. But, unknown to their loved ones at home, Mike and Peter Woodhouse survived the crash. Taken in by the Dutch resistance and with the help of Ubi, a German officer, the pair to remain in hiding till the end of the war when they are reunited with Val. We then follow Val, Mike and Peter Woodhouse as they rebuild a life in England and Ubi as he returns to Ge rmany at the end of the war and tries to build a new life for himself. His dream is to run a Wall of Death, a circus ring that pits motorcyclists against gravity as they attempt to stay upright at ever increasing speed. McCall Smith s generous writing and dry humor, his gentleness and humanity, and his ability to evoke a place and a set of characters without caricature or condescension have endeared his books to readers. 14 ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations. Please remember St. George Parish when planning your estate or preparing your will. Wedding arrangements must be made four months in advance of the wedding date. You must be a registered parishioner for six months prior to making arrangements. Please schedule your church date before reserving your hall.
