3 When Worlds Collide Today s gospel presents a dialogue between two rulers, the governor of the nation and Jesus, whose dominion is over all creation. The power of Pilate was exhibited in the crucifixion of Jesus. Pilate feared an uprising and gave in to what the people wanted. Might makes right. A concept that goes back to the Greeks in Plato s Republic and has been echoed and used in a negative way as an expression of power. It is ironic that the most powerful, God, does not abide by this aphorism. Yet, some world leaders do. Today we celebrate the feast of Christ, the King, but is this just an example of pious language that has lost its meaning? Is it just a title in a religious tract or the gospel of John? What does it mean for you? If you say that it expresses your true faith, that Christ is king in your life, then it begs the question, How do you show it? Do your actions speak as loud as your words? Are you willing to serve your king? Today the liturgical calendar, cycle B ends. The readings for the past few Sundays and weekday Masses remind us that one day all of creation will cease and there will only be the Kingdom of God. How do you respond to this? If you commit your time to attend Mass each Sunday, this is a start. If you support the ministry of the church by regular contributions that reflect your gratitude to God for how he has blessed you, if you are involved in caring for others and the ministries of the church, if you reach out to those in need, then you have found the beatitudes. If you follow the commandments, you are a righteous person. There is one thing left to do, Jesus says to all, Follow me. At times we will be in opposition to what the world believes, to the morals governments impose, to the values of society around us. Are you willing to give witness to your faith? Are you willing to pray in public to ask God s blessing on your food, to make the sign of the cross and let others see it? Are you willing to forgive others? Are you willing to share your faith with others and tell them how God has blessed you or been present to you? This is evangelization. It begins with you making a commitment to put Christ first. Then you will be a true disciple, a child of God, and a citizen of heaven. (You and I will still have to pay taxes here.) When we live and share our faith we store up treasure in heaven. God bless you during the coming Advent season as we prepare to Put Christ first. The Renew My Church banner hanging on the west wall of our church reminds us of change that is happening within our archdiocese. I not only invite, but ask you to be part of the growth and change by participating in a ministry of St. George. If we as an older generation do not make inroads, relationships, and invitations to our children to take on leadership roles, then change will overwhelm us. We must give an example. We must welcome those who pray near us. We make the love of God real, or by our lack of actions we are saying Faith is a cheap insurance policy, just in case.. What do your actions say about you and your commitment to St. George? Fr. Ken Fleck The Port Thanksgiving/Christmas Collection December 1 & 2 at weekend masses Please leave donations at the entrances of church. The annual PORT Shelter Thanksgiving collection will take place a little later this year December 1 & 2 at all of the weekend masses at the entrances of church. 4 Young at Heart Outing Wednesday, December 5, 2018 Gaelic Park Christmas Luncheon Plated lunch, coffee, tea and water with musical entertainment Cost: $15 Doors open at noon, lunch at 1:00 pm with entertainment to follow until 4:00 pm DISCOVER YOUR NEIGHBOR SUNDAYS Acts of Faith and Religious Education are collaborating on DISCOVER YOUR NEIGHBOR Sundays. ALL ARE WELCOME!!! These afternoons of sharing will consist of family-friendly activities and speakers that will make us more aware of the needs of our neighbors, both near and far. We are reaching out to the St. George community in support of these efforts as the year goes on. St. George families are getting together to feed the hungry. Gather together on December 2, 2018 to make sandwiches for the Port Ministries Bread Truck. On Sunday, December 2, 2018, on Discover Your Neighbor Sunday, St. George families will get together to make sandwiches for the PORT Ministries BREAD TRUCK. St. George parishioners regularly donate needed items twice a year to support the BREAD TRUCK, free medical clinic, after school programs, office needs and cleaning supplies. Donations of sewing machines have also helped the PORT to continue offering a learn-to-sew program for the neighborhood families. We will meet in O Connell Hall in the school basement immediately following the 11:30 am Mass to make sandwiches. Stop at the Family First Sunday brunch to have a snack on your way. If you have any questions please contact Angie Brady at angsssra@aol.com or the R.E. office at (708) Thank you! Did you know? No transportation provided. Purchases Final No Refunds St. George Church is a qualified charitable organization for direct transfers of IRA distributions. If you are over 70 1/2 and required by the IRS to take a distribution from your IRA, you can request a direct transfer to St. George of all or part of your required amount. Your financial institution will send the distribution directly to us. By making this decision you not only help to further our mission, but help your tax situation as well! You may wonder how this is different from simply taking your distribution, donating to St. George and taking a charitable deduction on your tax return. While it may work out to be the same, in some cases you may not qualify to itemize deductions. In that case your contribution could not be used to reduce your tax burden. With a qualified charitable distribution, your donation reduces your taxable income regardless of whether you qualify to itemize. Recent tax law changes have increased the hurdle to itemize deductions on your tax return, thus making it a great time to consult your tax advisor on whether a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA would benefit you. 4 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

7 THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: THE BOOK OF SIGNS Saturday, December 1 6:30 to 8:00 am This week we continue our examination of the Word of God, but transition from Mark s gospel to the Gospel of John. The most beloved Apostle John, who laid his head upon the chest of Christ and deeply contemplated the very heart of God, passes on for Christians the most contemplative account of Christ s life. It is not possible to come close to exhausting the deep meaning of this Gospel in just two short sessions. Dr. John Cavadini returns as this week s presenter and will hopefully guide us toward a better and more complete understanding of John s message. Invite a friend and join us for a hearty breakfast beginning at 6:30 am. All adult men, 18 and over, are invited and encouraged to attend. That Man Is You! meets on Saturday mornings for breakfast in O Connell Hall at St. George School. To learn more about TMIY, please contact Gary at (708) ; ghendzell@msn.com. St. George rectory is in need of a housekeeper! If you are interested and would like more information, please call Darlene Georges at (708) , ext Flexible times available. Our prayer shawl ministry has been busy creating shawls for many in need of healing prayers. If you would like a prayer shawl please contact Pina Quatrini (708) or Marybeth Kelly (708) We accept donations of 4 ply, sport, or baby yarn and clear ten quart or underbed containers. Please contact Barbara Rose Whalen (708) or Rebecca Morgan (708) for more information. We want to thank all our volunteers for their help with our ministry. Hope As we approach the first week in Advent the Church year is coming to an end, it is time to take stock in the past year! We look back and see all the joys and struggles that have brought us here. We just celebrated Thanksgiving and I pray you were able to find a lot to be thankful for this past year. To quote one of my favorite homilies by Fr. Kill, This is the season for Great Expectations! And that is what Advent is all about. I know we have a lot of preparation to do during this time; we need to visit family, we need to make cookies, we need to shop for and wrap gifts and decorate our homes, but we also, and more importantly, need to take time to be with God and prepare a space for Him. During this first week, we light the first candle to symbolize Hope/Expectation. I want to challenge you to take time this week and think about your expectations or hopes for Advent. Think about what you want to do and achieve during this time of preparation. Think big! Hope big! God is a God of great things! Have you heard what He did for the young Jewish girl who said yes to His invitation? This Advent really take time to prepare for Him, slow down, pray, listen and watch. Amazing things are happening; hope for them and be prepared. 8 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

10 The King is In We have a King in our parish. And since today is His feast day, our King is holding audiences today and all week with anyone and everyone who wishes to spend time with Him for as long as you want. Just come to Holy Family Chapel and stay with Him awhile. I hope the lines to get in aren t too long. The King, Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, has all His unrequited love and graces and compassion for everyone who comes in extra-special quantities this week. Don t worry, He won t run out. His love and graces and compassion are inexhaustible. Once in the chapel it won t take long to realize what a treasure we have, to have the King of Kings there with us every day, all day long. Our King will let you know that you are loved and that you don t have to face life s problems alone. And, if you re not already a member of the A-team, call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour each week with Our King, Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Then every week Jesus will give you renewed energy to face life s challenges, and you ll build a relationship with Our Lord that will last for eternity. It is really a great feeling to hobnob with the King of the entire universe, and that feeling will last forever. Book discussion date January 25, All are welcome invite a friend! A tale of war and forgiveness, and an intrepid dog McCall Smith s generous writing and dry humor, his gentleness and humanity, and his ability to evoke a place and a set of characters without caricature or condescension have endeared his books to readers, - The New York Times Alexander McCall Smith is one of those authors, which should come as no surprise to those who have happily read their way through his prolific output ranging from a ladies detective agency in Botswana to a supercilious philanthropist in Edinburgh and a forlorn little boy called Bertie.
