1 April 15, 2018 Third Sunday Of Easter ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2018 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME SHALOM English is a difficult language in many ways. It has evolved over centuries. One of the difficulties is that it has borrowed words from other languages which have morphed both in pronunciation and spelling. The English language we use, in the United States, is even more difficult due to the liberal use of idioms. This double effect of nuanced meaning and inconsistencies, representing many different cultures and languages, makes it even more difficult for foreigners to learn our language and for us to understand and appreciate the richness of other languages. Shalom is one of those words. Translated it means peace. However, in Hebrew culture, at the time of Jesus, it conveyed more than a lack of war, more than a pastoral setting of sheep in the pasture and contented children playing. Shalom means an abiding communion with God, one s neighbor, and on the earth. It is not the absence of violence or a simple quiet stillness. Shalom is an experience of peace and harmony that comes from its cultivation in our hearts, our homes, and our values. It is more than a one time event. Shalom comes from living a lifestyle that is in harmony with God s presence. It goes beyond the mere observance of commandments, laws and rules. It is the end product of a life lived well in relationship with God, self and others. It is the fulfillment of commitment. The life lived in shalom is obvious by the bond that has formed over time. Laws, rules, words and contracts may be the beginning of any commitment, but to reach shalom takes a lifetime of commitment. We see it in the love of God, John 3:16. We see it in the sacrifice of Christ - his passion, death and resurrection. We feel it in Reconciliation. We are given the opportunity to live it in the committed love of Marriage and Holy Orders and in preparation through the friendships we form in our early years. Twice Jesus gives his disciples his peace - Shalom. He offers us that same gift. We must make the commitment. Feel the love of our family of faith by becoming involved in one of the many ministries we offer to serve in our community. Fr. Ken Fleck

If you have any questions, please contact Stacey Yock at (708) A Blessed and Happy Easter There are two things I d suggest that all of us, including me, do to make this Easter more special. They are 2 Bs - bible and blessings. The part of the bible that is particularly fitting is ACTS, commonly called the Acts of the Apostles, but really also the actions of the newly formed Christian people. In the bible, it covers about 30 pages, which when read, reflected on and prayed over a page or two each day, will help us draw closer to Christ and his Church. It will not be a sacrifice, it will be a pleasure. The actions of the early Church show us a people that were learning about Jesus and developing fellowship, that were reverently praying and gladly sharing, that were happily worshipping and telling the greatest story ever told. A people becoming the Body of Christ. In regards to blessings, which are almost self-evident, they are an acknowledgement that every good gift comes from God, the source of all goodness. We bless persons, places, things and events. Every blessing has God and a person or persons in mind. A parent can bless her child tracing the sign of the cross on her head each night. A gardener can bless his flowers and vegetables (grass too) with a simple prayer. All can bless a visitor and we can bless a sick person whom we visit. We can bless cars, pets, homes, meals, a new baby, a ball game or a wedding engagement. We can bless the whole world. Always, we bless God who always blesses us. A blessed and happy Easter. God love you always Joe Panek, Deacon 4 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

5 Celebrate Easter s 50 Days! Family Activities to Celebrate the Easter Season Easter is the most important feast of the Christian year so important that the Church sets aside a seven-week season to rejoice in Christ s victory over sin and death. How can a family sustain this Easter spirit of celebration all the way to Pentecost? Here are fifty ways to celebrate the fifty days. But don t try to do them all! Each week, just pick a few ideas that seem right for you. You ll be rejoicing long after the last jelly bean is gone! 1. Use a special candle at family meals to recall the light of Christ. 2. Every day, read together from the Easter story: Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24; John Plan fun family activities one for every week of Easter. 4. Put up a sign or banner that proclaims, He is risen! 5. Was anyone received into the Church during your parish Easter Vigil? Have them over. 6. Add an alleluia song or three alleluias to your grace before meals. 7. Put on an Easter play. Invite relatives and friends to a performance. 8. Make a poster of a life-giving cross. Add paper flowers and leaves to it throughout Easter. 9. Celebrate new life by doing something as a family to support unborn children and their parents. 10. Keep fresh flowers around. 11. Use the old Easter greeting and response: Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! 12. Visit a lonely neighbor or do some other family act of kindness to express thanks for the resurrection. 13. Talk about baptism. Tell stories of family members baptisms. 14. Plan a family outing to a river, lake, stream, or ocean. 15. Drape your crucifixes and crosses with a strip of white cloth. 16. Make cookies in the shapes of Easter symbols. Freeze some to serve throughout the season. 17. Learn how other cultures celebrate Easter. Try out some of their customs and foods. 18. Make cards announcing the good news of the resurrection. 19. Use a special container for newly blessed water from church. Show your kids how to use holy water. 20. Throw some water balloons! 21. Listen to Handel s Messiah and other Easter music. 22. Read about the Emmaus disciples (Luke 24:13-35); take a family walk. 23. What about a short trip to an interesting shrine or church? 24. Place a resurrection icon or picture in a place of honor. 25. Discuss what it means to be Christ s witnesses (Luke 24:48)? Help each family member to see that their witness matters. 26. Wear more white, or even gold! They re the season s special colors. 27. Pray the Liturgy of the Hours together in the morning or evening ( 28. If your family likes to sing and play instruments, have people over for a musical Easter celebration. 29. Read about the disciples amazing catch of fish (John 21:1-14). Then go fishing together. 30. Or imitate Peter, and go swimming (John 21:7). 31. The Sunday after Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday. Explore this relatively new devotion ( 32. Talk about how the disciples hid (John 20:19) until the Spirit s coming at Pentecost. Follow up by playing hide and seek. 33. Plant some seeds. 34. Honor the risen Lord s mother by learning about Mary gardens ( 35. Read Luke 24:50-53 or Acts 1:6-11. Ask family members to imagine themselves present at Jesus ascension. How would they have felt about it? 36. Watch a movie with an Easter theme (For ideas, see the list from the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference: movies/filmsforlent.htm). 37. Just before his ascension, Jesus blessed the disciples. Pray Numbers 6:24-26 together as a way of communicating his blessing to one another. 38. On Ascension Thursday, choose a family intention. Make the nine days till Pentecost a novena to the Holy Spirit. 39. Add some Pentecost red (for fire) to your Easter decorations. 40. Read Acts 2, the Spirit s coming at Pentecost. Read it in all the languages family members speak! (See the Bible translations at Decorate a cake with Pentecost flames and other symbols to celebrate the birthday of the church. 42. Talk about the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (see Isaiah 11 and 1 Corinthians 12; also the Catechism of the Catholic Church, ). 43. Make a Pentecost hanging or mobile that features a dove and tongues of fire. 44. Learn a prayer to the Holy Spirit to use in your family prayer time. 45. Play twenty questions : Have someone choose a Bible character or thing from the Easter and Pentecost stories. The group gets twenty questions (yes or no answers only) to guess the right answer. 46. List the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23; Catechism, 1832) on separate slips of paper. Have each family member randomly select a fruit to cultivate. 47. Fly a kite to celebrate the wind of the Holy Spirit. 48. Find ways to make Sunday meals special during the Easter season. 49. Continue the special Sunday meal tradition to celebrate Jesus resurrection all year. 50. Discuss why Sunday is holy (see John Paul II s Apostolic Letter, On Keeping the Lord s Day Holy; Catechism, ). Decide how you can keep the Lord s Day as a family. April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter 5

First Communion Mass Coming Soon We would like to ask the St. George Parish community to pray for the students who will be receiving the Eucharist for the first time; please pray for their parents and families as well. We know that it is increasingly challenging to live out our Catholic faith, and we value the strength that we receive from the sacramental life of the Church and from our parish community. Twenty-four students will receive their First Holy Communion at the 11:30 am Mass on Sunday, April 29. They, along with their families and friends, will be in attendance at our regular 11:30 am Mass that morning. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in the public witness of their faith, and we rejoice with these students and their families! BOOK CLUB New Book!!!! A DANGEROUS CROSSING Discussion to be held on May 25, 2018 Highly recommended for Jr. High and older. Rectory Meeting Room, 7:00 pm Books available for $10 at the rectory. Ghalib doesn't want to leave his home in Syria. But, the city has become too dangerous, and his family has no choice but to flee. Together they make their way through Syria to the Turkish border, where Ghalib gets separated from his family. Stricken with grief and fear, fighting cold, pain and hunger, he manages to make it to a refugee camp in Turkey. Ghalib is safe for now, but life in a refugee camp is wretched and hopeless, and this boy's journey in search of safety is far from over. Based on true accounts and real Syrian children, A Dangerous Crossing is the story of one boy's search for refuge. Story is based on the experiences of real Syrian families. A Dangerous Crossing is a story of bravery and solidarity in the face of despair. April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter 9

PLUS 8 loaves of bread... 5 pounds of bologna... 3 pounds of cheese... generosity of parents, catechists and parishioners... AND immeasurable prayers and compassion! All of this was packed onto the Port Ministries Bread Truck on the afternoon of April 5 to share with the hungry that evening, thanks to the work of 16 first-year Confirmation prep students at class the night before. We are grateful for this opportunity to reflect on the Corporal Works of Mercy and to reach out in love and service to help those less fortunate than ourselves. This service activity was a great way to close out our Religious Education formation year and to encourage continued acts of mercy over the summer. We continue to pray for these students as they forge on toward Confirmation next year. Thanks to all who made this possible! 10 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

12 RENEW MY CHURCH is being implemented across the Archdiocese of Chicago. It will bring change to all our churches. Change is a sign of growth - a sign of new life. Just as spring brings forth new life from the earth, God's Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, given in Baptism, recreates the many ways we celebrate our faith. Our seven Catholic churches in Tinley Park and Orland are part of a new grouping. The pastors have already started working together. Chris Stefanick is an inspiring Catholic evangelist. As our parishes form committees and work together for this event, we open our hearts to New Life in the Spirit. I hope you will join us. GOD DIDN T CREATE US TO JUST GET BY, HE CREATED US TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULL! REBOOT! Let internationally renowned speaker and author Chris Stefanick, along with top performing live music artists, help you REDISCOVER God, and REDISCOVER the life you were made for. REBOOT! is the fun, inspiring and practical experience for all (ages 12 and up), of applying the beauty and genius of the Gospel to every aspect of your life, from prayer and spirituality, to work, dating, marriage, parenting, health and more! It s time to start living the Life you were made for. A Chris Stefanick experience is coming to our area! He will be at St. Elizabeth Seton, Orland Hills, IL on Wednesday, October 10, Tickets are only $22 and are available now at reallifecatholic.com. Watch for more information in upcoming bulletins. With the help of the greenhouse they should be hardy for cool nights by mid-may. Call the rectory if you would like to help. We need to get our greenhouses ready along with our rain barrels. 14 Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education! How Did They Know? By Joyce Rupp How did they know it was time to push up through the longwintered soil? How did they know it was the moment to resurrect while thick layers of stubborn ice still pressed the bleak ground flat? But, the tulips knew. They came, rising strongly, a day after the ice died. There is a hope-filled place in me that also knows when to rise. It is urged by the strong sun, warming my wintered heart. It is nudged by the Secret One, calling, calling, calling, Arise, my love, and come. Like the dormant tulips, my heart stirs, and hope comes dancing forth. Not unlike the Holy One, kissing the morning sun, waving a final farewell to a tomb emptied of its treasure. If you would like a blessed prayer shawl for yourself or for a loved-one, please call Pina Quatrini at (708) , or Maureen Cetera at (708) You can receive or give this special Hug from God freely thanks to the great generosity of our donors. Please feel free to share in our ministry by participating on Thursday mornings, by sharing shawls with those in need of a Hug, or by donating to the ministry. May Easter JOY fill your life with wonder! Thursday Mornings in April: 9:30-11:30 am in the Quiet Room 4/19/2018 Prayer Shawl Ministry 4/26/2018 April Birthday Party!
