5 Annointing With Chrism As the Confirmandi continue to prepare for Confirmation, they reflect on the significance of the ritual of anointing with the sacred Chrism in the rite of Confirmation. In the anointing, candidates are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, who makes it possible to continue the ministry of Jesus. How do we, as a parish, live as anointed ones? Please continue praying for our Confirmandi. Sacramental People As members of this parish community prepare for Confirmation, we the faithful journey with them. Laying On of Hands The use of oil in sacred rituals can be traced back to Old Testament times when the Jews anointed sacred objects (vessels used in worship) as well as persons considered sacred (kings and prophets). The key in both instances was that the object or person was being set aside or consecrated for a special purpose, a special mission that came from God. The notion of a person with a special mission from God took on major proportions in biblical times, and a redeeming figure called the Anointed One (in Hebrew, Messiah and in Greek, christos or Christ ) was awaited by the people. The early followers of Jesus recognized Jesus as the Anointed One long-awaited by the Jewish people. Very quickly his followers understood that they shared in his mission, and so they too came to be called anointed ones or, from the Greek, Christians. For Reflection What difference does it make in my life when I remember that I have been given a special mission as a disciple of Jesus? Faith Focus Christians, who are anointed with sacred Chrism in both Baptism and Confirmation, share in the mission of Jesus, the Anointed One. The Church Says... In the Rite of Confirmation, the anointing with Chrism and the accompanying words express clearly the effect of the giving of the Holy Spirit. Signed with the perfumed oil, the baptized receive the indelible character, the seal of the Lord, together with the gift of the Spirit that conforms them more closely to Christ (Rite of Confirmation, Introduction 9). Prayer God our loving Father, you have called us to share in the mission of your Son, a mission to bring the Good News of your reconciling love to a world of sin and suffering. Send your Holy spirit upon us, so that we might be faithf l to the anointing for mission that we received. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. January 26, 2014 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 5

Tax Letters St. George Church is grateful for the generosity of our parishioners. Sacrificial giving enables us to offer a variety of services and programs. Tax letters have been mailed out. If you have not received a tax letter and need one for income tax purposes, please call the rectory. The object of the Church s social doctrine is essentially the same that constitutes the reason for its existence: the human person called to salvation, and as such entrusted by Christ to the Church s care and responsibility. By means of her social doctrine, the Church shows her concern for human life in society, aware that the quality of social life - i.e. of the relationships of justice and love that form the fabric of society - depends in a decisive manner on the protection and promotion of the human person, for whom every community comes into existence. In fact, at play in society are the dignity and rights of the person, and peace in the relationships between persons and between communities of persons. These are goods that the social community must pursue and guarantee. In this perspective, the Church s social doctrine has the task of proclamation and also of denunciation. In the first place it is the proclamation of what the Church possesses as proper to herself: a view of man and of human affairs in their totality. This is done not only on the level of principles but also in practice. The church s social doctrine, in fact, offers not only meaning, value and criteria of judgment, but also the norms and directives of action that arise from these. With her social doctrine the Church does not attempt to structure or organize society, but to appeal to, guide and form consciences. The social doctrine also entails a duty to denounce, when sin is present: the sin of injustice and violence that in different ways moves through society and is embodied in it. By denunciation, the Church s social doctrine becomes judge and defender of unrecognized and violated rights, especially those of the poor, the least and the weak. The more these rights are ignored or trampled, the greater becomes the extent of violence and injustice, involving entire categories of people and large geographical areas of the world, thus giving rise to social questions, that is, to abuses and imbalances that lead to social upheaval. A large part of the Church s social teaching is solicited and determined by important social questions, to which social justice is the proper answer. The intent of the Church s social doctrine is of the religious and moral order. Religious because the Church s evangelizing and salvific mission embraces man in the full truth of his existence, of his personal being and also of his community and social being. Moral, because she aims at a complete form of humanism, that is to say, at the liberation from everything that oppresses man and the development of the whole man and of all men. The Church s social doctrine indicates the path to follow for a society reconciled and in harmony though justice and love, a society that anticipates in history, in a preparatory and prefigurative manner, the new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells (2 Per. 3:13). Fr. Blaise Lent is approaching rapidly. In order to prepare and plan our Lenten Prayer Services, I would like to start with Fridays Stations of the Cross. This year would be nice to have the different groups/organizations of the parish leading the Stations of the Cross for a particular Friday. To signup your group/ organization, or if you need more information, call Fr. Roberto Mercado at (708) or him at frroberto@stgeorge60477.org by February 7, January 26, 2014 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 7

Many of our parishioners have received a mailing from Cardinal George. He asks that you make a pledge to the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. The Appeal supports both parish and Archdiocesan ministries. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: You are the Temple of God. We are living temples of God and carry His true presence into the world. He calls us to share our gifts with others. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. As you review the mailing from Cardinal George, please note the ministries and services funded by the Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Note that when our parish reaches its goal of $68, in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish. 8 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

Cetera Some number of years ago James Taylor came out with a popular song. I always felt this song is more of a hymn to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The song is You ve Got a Friend. You probably remember it. For you younger readers, the first verse goes like this: When you re down and troubled and you need a helping hand and nothing, whoa nothing is going right. Close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest nights. What a pleasant thought to know Jesus is always near by. All you need is to think of Him and He is there for you. You can go one better. You can come to the Holy Family Chapel and experience the physical presence of our friend, Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament. Share your troubles with Him. Share your good feelings as well. A good friend always likes to share your pleasant moments as well as the difficult ones. You can also call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour with your friend every week. It s a great way to have your friendship grow. Terry Dorencz January 26, 2014 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 9

10 Someone You Should Know - PPC Spotlight The Parish Pastoral Council spotlights our notable parish family members throughout the year. The council selected Tim Framke as December s Someone You Should Know. We shine the PPC spotlight on Tim Framke because he consistently goes beyond the call of duty. He gives generously of his time and talent serving and helping our parish. We appreciate all his help and are blessed to have him as part of St. George Parish. Learn more about Tim in this short interview. Tim Framke s parents, Delores and Spencer Framke, moved to Tinley Park and Tim began fourth grade Religious Education classes at St. George School in He grew up in the parish and has volunteered at St. George for the last fifteen years. A tradesman with 37 years of expertise, Tim currently works for the CTA as a chief sheet metal worker. He enjoys his successful career and in his spare time he creates candleholders and other articles from scrap metal. Tim s favorite sport is bodybuilding and in the mid 1980s he won several trophies. Among his many memorable experiences, Tim cherishes his marriage in 1978 to his lovely wife Donna. Rev. Alfons Gorny, SVD officiated at their wedding. Donna and Tim are blessed with three adult children James, Sean, and Gabrielle. Their children s baptisms were particularly precious times. Tim believes the nicest part of being a member of St. George Parish is the lifetime of friendships he and his family have developed. St. George Parish Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Holy Family Chapel Ministries are very fortunate to have Tim as one of their members. His fifteen years of service in church ministries began when Donna introduced him to Jan Ross. Jan encouraged him to become a Eucharistic minister, his favorite ministry. When Cardinal George celebrated Mass for the parish s 75 th Anniversary, Tim served at that Mass. It was one of his most memorable experiences as a volunteer. Tim loves being a volunteer and wishes more young parishioners would become involved. He believes the future of the parish depends on the involvement of our youth. Tim also wishes Catholic politicians would stand up for their faith and include Catholic values in public policies and legislation. Tim s favorite Bible story comes from St. Luke 24: It s the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus when they encounter Jesus, but they don t recognize him. Jesus agrees to stay with them at an inn. Their eyes are opened when he breaks the bread for communion. Tim likes the story because our eyes are opened just like the eyes of those ancient disciples. It s not surprising that Tim s favorite Catholic song is I Believe This Is Jesus. The song celebrates a fundamental Catholic belief. As a Eucharistic minister, Tim cherishes this belief. He especially appreciates bringing the body of Christ to the handicapped attending Mass. Thank you, Tim, for the opportunity of getting to know you better. MEN S SPIRITUALITY GROUP The Men s Spirituality Group will meet next Saturday, February 1, in the Rectory Meeting Room. The group meets from 8:30 to 10:30 am. All Christian men are invited as we talk about men s issues and spirituality. Please enter through the back entrance of the rectory. 10 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL Many thanks to the wonderful volunteers who spent a lot of time and effort to decorate our church for Christmas and, then, take down the decorations for Ordinary Time. The church was beautifully and tastefully decorated; the large poinsettias were especially striking. Thanks for all who volunteered for all of our ministries from the preparation of purificators, to ministers of communion, lectors, cantors and choir members. The liturgies were spiritually uplifting and lively. The bulletin was well-designed and beautiful for Christmas and the feast of the Holy Family. God s blessings on all who worked so hard for our Christmas celebrations. Fr. Fleck

11 The goal of Parish Transformation is to make our Parish more vibrant and effective in the spirit of Jesus mission and ministry. Through consensus of the team, the following Focus area was identified as a priority for the Finance segment of Parish Transformation. Continued Financial Communication In addition to the Annual letter, we will continue to provide timely updates on the financial position of the Parish. Below is a chart of Sunday collections for the six month period that ended December 31, comparing this year to last year and to the budget for the current year. As you can see, we are approximately $31,000 less than last year and where we expected to be for this year. Also shown below is a chart of the Christmas collections. As you can see, we are approximately $7,000 less than last year and where we expected to be for this year. We ask each parish family to prayerfully consider increasing their level of giving so that Saint George can continue to be a vibrant Catholic community. We are grateful for all the good people of Saint George and ask everyone to keep Saint George in your prayers. January 26, 2014 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 11

12 The St. Coletta Blanket Tying Project Saturday, February 1, :00 am-12:00 pm Come for an hour or three O'Connell Hall in the School Basement Please come and tie! We need you! Good News! Our last day of parish tying on November 17 was wonderful... almost 50 children, men and women came to help with the blanket project. We have now completed 120 blankets! Isn't that amazing! We are still in need of fabric to make 50 more. The kindness and generosity of the people of St. George has been overwhelming. We hope that we can continue and reach the 176 blanket goal. WE NEED YOU! You can help in three ways: Donate your time to tie blankets - Lots of fun! We still need fabric. Donate 5 yards of fleece fabric (2 1/2 yards of patterned fleece and 2 1/2 yards of solid colored fleece to match). Generally blankets cost about $20-$25. SHOP SALES! With the current sales at JoAnn Fabrics and Hancock Fabrics, blankets have cost as little as $15 per blanket. Or, you can call one of us, donate the money for one blanket and we can do your shopping for you. Make your own fleece blanket individually or with your family for a St. Coletta resident (directions are at the rectory). We will be collecting blankets on the Sundays that we will be tying or you can drop them off at the rectory. Please take a photo of your family while working on the project and fill out an index card with your reflection on the activity. God bless you for your kindness! For information please call Michelle Moore at (815) , Angie Brady at (708) or Judy Graves at (708) The PORT Ministries What you should know about The Port Twenty years ago when St. George needed help with liturgies on the weekends, Father Gus came from The PORT to help. St. George Parish began supporting The PORT Ministries at that time. The annual Thanksgiving and Palm Sunday collections benefit The PORT. Some of the ways you can help/volunteer at The PORT... The Port Free Clinic housed in our Pio House Administration building, is a basic health care provider for the uninsured and homeless. Staffed entirely by volunteer physicians and other health professionals, the clinic offers physicals, immunizations, free treatment and medications as well as educational programs such as well-baby care and other services relative to family health and well being. The Home Visiting Ministry is reaching into homes with listening hearts and is bringing compassion so needed to offset the loneliness and sufferings of the homebound. Its goal is to visit and bring care through listening, Eucharistic ministry and prayer to those who are locked in their homes or nursing homes through illness, old age or disability. To find out how you can help/volunteer at The PORT call (773) PRAYER CORNER As Catholic Christians, we believe that our God is not one person but three and these three share infinitely happy relationships. Not only that, but this Holy Trinity invites us to enter into this relationship, this dance of love, and share their happiness. Our part is a certain consention and intention of will. Consciously and deliberately taking some time each day to pray is our passageway into this Holy Relationship and the key to our own lasting happiness with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Next Trip to Daybreak Shelter in Joliet will be Thursday, January 30, Come and join us! Call Fran Fancsali at for more information. 12 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477
