1 January 22, 2017 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2017 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday 8:45 am: Tuesday & Wednesday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am & 6 pm Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME Choose Light or Darkness Ordinary Time is the in between time. We are between the Christmas season and Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, March 1. So too our lives, we are living in the in between time from our conception until the fullness of life in God s kingdom. There is an important task for us in this period of time. The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light, from Isaiah in the first reading and echoed in the gospel of Matthew. From this point on Jesus begins his public ministry. His theme, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. From this point on Jesus calls his disciples. He calls us as well, through the waters of Baptism. WE are called to be the light of Christ in a darkened world. Christ sacrificed his life for our salvation. What are we willing to sacrifice? Stand up for the Right to Life! What are some of the issues that the light of Christ needs to shine upon? A new president inaugurated who wants to put up walls between us and Mexico, who wants to scrap The Affordable Care Act with no specifics for a backup plan for millions who need health insurance, immigration reform, and violence in major urban areas, specifically, Chicago. Choices. Catholic Schools week begins next Sunday. Many Catholic schools have closed since I was ordained in Is this due to high tuition or a matter of choice? Our parents and grandparents who built these churches and many in the old neighborhoods had less than we do today, yet they had thriving Catholic schools and parishes. What happened? Choices. Our October count tells us only 21% of Catholics attend church each Sunday. Considering there is a Church precept that requires Catholics to attend Church each Sunday, there must be a rampant illness that grips the rest. Choices. The darkness that covers us is our affluence. We have more choices that are more entertaining. The majority of Catholics choose not to attend Mass many weekends. If we want to know what the result of these choices is, just look at the lack of vocations, the lack of adequate funds to operate most churches, compared to the money spent on entertainment, sports in particular and all the other choices we put before God on Sunday. Growing up in the Fleck household the rule was, If you are too sick to go to Church you have to stay in bed for the rest of the day. God came first, then, our choices followed. If we celebrate Catholic schools week with all the accomplishments of our children, but neglect the family being at Mass each weekend, then we undermine their education and formation. The choice is ours, each Sunday. Let your light shine as an example for all. Considering that the Cubs won the World Series in the last game and in the last inning, after a rain delay, the suspense was so thick you could cut it with a knife. It was reported that in those 17 minutes of delay 43.2 million rosaries were said throughout the country. In the playoff games many season holders are willing to sell their seats for a premium price on E-Bay, Stub Hub, etc., but would never think of giving up a seat at the World Series Doesn t eternal life and a seat in heaven command a greater price - namely, our time, one hour each week? Being rolled down the aisle of church for a funeral Mass does not guarantee a seat in the real World Series of heaven. Fr. Ken Fleck

Date: Sunday, January 29, 2017 Time: 1:00 pm Place: Rectory Meeting Room Pot Luck Refreshments. Special treat! Enjoy some of Abraham Lincoln's favorite Foods! Don't miss this amazing award winning movie! As with the great John Ford (Young Mr. Lincoln) before him, it would be out of character for Steven Spielberg to construct a conventional, cradle-to-grave portrait of a historical figure. If Lincoln doesn't thrill like the Kushner-penned Munich, there's never a dull moment--though it would take a second viewing to catch all the political nuances. --Kathleen C. May your new year be blessed with many good resolutions that you are able to keep! As our signature Scripture verse says, "Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect" Romans, 12:2. Go on retreat, seek out the wisdom of a spiritual director, read a good book, read another good book, say "yes" when someone asks you to join a ministry, find a lonely person and share your time, call an old friend you have lost touch with, take a trip to visit someone you love, spend quality time in prayer, pray for vocations, encourage someone to listen to God's call, do a little act of service that no one will notice, offer each day to The Lord and then make it all about Him! These are just a few ideas that you might add to your list of resolutions - be creative! Do it for Jesus, and have a Happy New Year! If you would like a blessed prayer shawl, call Pina Quatrini at (708) , or Maureen Cetera at (708) As always, we thank our precious donors who allow us to share "Hugs from God" free of charge! Thursday Mornings in January: 9:30-11:30 am in the Quiet Room 1/26/2017 Prayer Shawl Ministry " Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect" Romans 12:2. 9 PRO-LIFE MEMORIAL FOR VICTIMS OF ABORTION January 22, 2017 is the forty-fourth anniversary of the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion nationwide for all nine months of pregnancy under any circumstances. During these fortyfour years over fifty-nine million babies have died when their mothers were victimized by the lie that abortion will solve their "problem". We pray for an end to this American holocaust. If you (or a person you know) needs to talk to someone to seek reconciliation and healing from an abortion, people are available who are ready to help. Please call Project Rachel at (312) or Post- Abortion Hotline at (800) 5-WE-CARE. Do you know the #1 killer in our nation? It's not cancer. It's not heart disease. Sadly, it is abortion, which does not happen by chance or heredity like cancer. It is chosen, though often not by the mother, but rather by others who pressure her to make this deadly choice. St. George Pro- Life sponsors this weekend s memorial at Mass for the babies lost to abortion and in recognition of the serious impact of abortion on the mothers and their families. ROSARY CRUSADE FOR LIFE On Saturday, January 28 you are invited to attend the Rosary Crusade for Life prayer vigil, seeking spiritual assistance to prevent women and their preborn children from becoming victims of abortion. We will leave from St. George parking lot at 9:25 am to travel to Family Planning Associates at 659 West Washington, to pray the Rosary and other prayers for about seventy-five minutes. If you need additional information or a ride, call Bill Beckman at (708) THE WOMEN S CENTER LIFE BANQUET Save the date! Taste of St. George on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, To volunteer or for questions you might have, please call Angie Brady at (708) ARCHBISHOP KURTZ URGES ALL TO PRAY, ACT FOR HUMAN DIGNITY IN MESSAGE FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY As our nation celebrates the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I am reminded of the timeless plea found in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail that we move from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of human dignity. I am grateful for Dr. King s words and actions and those of so many who worked for justice and helped to advance our country s recognition of the dignity and equality of each person. Continuing tensions and violence in our communities remind us that although significant progress has been made in erasing the stain of racism and the cycle of related violence, we still have much work to do. As we consider the gains of the past and the challenges before us, I urge each of us to pray for healing and peace as we work for ever greater communion. Every human life has profound dignity, rooted in our creation in the image of God. We are one family. Our communities will only reflect this dignity if we first turn to prayer to guide our actions toward ending years of isolation, disregard and conflict between neighbors. That which seems impossible can only be brought about through God and his powerful intervention in our hearts. Dr. King reminded us of the power of prayer and action. I invite everyone, this day and every day, to implore God to make us his instruments in creating a more just society. January 14, 2015 Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of [those] who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust and our quarreling into forgiveness. Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words division, hatred and war be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be brother, and our way of life will always be that of... Peace...! Amen. - Pope Francis, excerpt from a prayer for peace for the Middle East, June 8, Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Although sacramental needs of patients are administered by the hospital chaplain or by a local priest, in an emergency, St. George clergy will respond to sacramental needs. Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations. Please remember St. George Parish when planning your estate or preparing your will. Wedding arrangements must be made four months in advance of the wedding date. You must be a registered parishioner for six months prior to making arrangements. Please schedule your church date before reserving your hall. Bulletin information provides updates on parish and Archdiocesan events. Please submit articles or recommendations to bulletin@stgeorge60477.org by Monday noon before publication date. Because of space limitations, articles will be limited to St. George activities and information, as well as Archdiocesan events and news. All articles are subject to editing and will be published at the discretion of the Pastor. No guarantees can be made as to size or placement of the articles. PARISH STAFF Pastor..Rev.
