1 March 4, 2018 ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2018 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME Zeal Apart from being a good Scrabble word when you have the letter z on your tray, we don t hear this word very often. Have we lost passion in our lives? Do we just go about living each day in a haze of I-pod music, s, and computer communications such that we are living in self-imposed electronic gadget prisons which cut us off from the rest of humanity? It is possible to be beaten into submission such that we routinely run through each day falling into a boring repetition of the day before. This is what can happen to good, holy people who observe the laws of the Church, but do not go beyond them. Our second reading, 1 Cor. 1:22-25, points out how living a Christian lifestyle seems foolish to the rest of the world. We are called to live our lives radically different from the world values. Today s gospel, John 2:13-25, is the first of three Passover references that John lists in his gospel. It introduces us to Jesus empowered by the Spirit: Zeal for your house will consume me. is the Scripture passage his disciples use to describe the passion evoked in Jesus as he threw the buyers and sellers out of the temple. John uses this passage to point toward the eventual resurrection of the Lord and the fulfillment of his mission. John also uses this particular episode to underscore the human nature of Jesus intertwined with his divine nature. While we do not have the same privilege of two natures, we struggle with the one human nature we do have. The challenge of Jesus to us is to go beyond our human nature and strive to live as children of God, never being complacent. This leads toward the unity of observing Church laws and acting upon their imperative through social justice issues. It is not enough to just pray. Prayer must lead us to take action. During the season of Lent these actions should not only turn us away from sin, but also arouse from within an awareness of how we can be good stewards of the skills, talents, money and resources God has entrusted to our care. Two sides of the same coin, namely, do good, avoid evil. If there are bad habits you want to overcome, substitute a good habit. Write it down. Make a conscientious effort to do that good deed every day and you will overcome evil. Continue with your Lenten practices of sacrifice, prayer and almsgiving, but also reflect upon your involvement in the Church ministries that need volunteers. Is there more you can do? Is there a ministry which God is inviting you to try? How often do we get frustrated and emotional when we are stuck in traffic because we can t get to where we want to go and do what we want to do? If only we had the same zeal for our journey of faith and our final destination. Fr. Ken Fleck

3 Congratulations and Blessings!!! Last Sunday, forty students from our parish community were confirmed here at St. George by Bishop Joseph Perry. We are grateful for all who made this celebration so special for these young people who have so much to offer our parish community! In addition to Bishop Perry and MC Dan Ragonese, we thank the priests, deacons, staff, musicians, Knights of Columbus, RE Board, parents, sponsors and family present! We are grateful to have these young people within our parish community. It is our sincerest hope that each of them continues to grow in relationship with the Lord, to participate more fully in the sacramental life of the Church and to carry our faith out into the community and the greater world. May they be true witnesses of God s love and mercy in the world as they continue to grow. No matter their vocation, God will be with them every step of the way; may they find joy in knowing God s infinite love and constant presence. The road may not always be easy, but the burden will be lighter with trust in the Lord. May God bless them... today and always! May they know and respond to God's will. May they always have the support of sponsor, parents, family, friends and faith community! May they experience joy, love and peace in abundance! SPRED II Earn Your Wings and Halo! 4 Parish Ministry Weekend Highlighting Service and Outreach March 10 and 11 Next week, we are going to continue our journey and visit all of the Service and Outreach Ministries. You may not be as familiar with a lot of these ministries. They go out into the community to share their gifts by educating and praying. They welcome new parishioners into our parish community. They may pray and bring Holy Communion to the homebound. They may also share gifts or other acts of charity to those in need. Consider sharing your gifts and being a part of one of these wonderful ministries. Please come and visit all of these ministries and pray about your own involvement here at St. George. (708) For the Catholic with celiac disease, the most painful aspect of living on a strict, gluten free diet is the inability to receive the host, or bread, at Communion. Now there is a choice. A host has been developed that is extremely low in gluten, 0.01%. The Secretariat for the Liturgy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has stated that these meet the requirements of the Code of Canon Law and may be validly used at Mass with permission of the person s pastor. If you are in need of a low gluten host, please see the celebrant before each Mass. Strike It Rich Tickets are available NOW!! Date of drawing - Friday, May 4, Tickets only $20 each!! 10 Encounter Lent Third Week March 4 - March 10, 2018 Trusting in the mercy and the love of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who invites us to go and do likewise in the spirit of the Good Samaritan, we voice our own petitions, asking for the needs of our brothers and sisters all over the world saying, Lord, may we love as one human family. For Safiata, who we encounter through CRS Rice Bowl, and all farmers near and far, that they find abundant harvests to feed their families, their communities and the world. We pray to the Lord For those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes for safety or better opportunities. We pray to the Lord Care for God s Creation Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Jesus reminds us that we are all made in God's image and likeness. That means that every human being has a special value and a purpose. We need to care for each other so we can be the people God calls us to be. Encounter Safiata The dry and dusty climate of Burkina Faso means farming can be difficult. It means water can be hard to come by. And it means Safiata and her family often face hunger. Even though she had two plots of land to farm, the many months each year without rain made feeding her 9 children and 16 grandchildren a real challenge. That s why Catholic Relief Services is providing farmers like Safiata with more land to grow crops - like onions - that thrive in dry climates. And thanks to a CRS-sponsored irrigation system, she knows she ll have access to water year-round. That means her crops will grow, and she ll be able to sell some at the market. I pay school fees thanks to selling the vegetables. The vegetables help solve the problems my family faces, Safiata says. Moreover, she can prepare for the future. Together with others, Safiata is putting a little of the income she earns from selling her crops at the market into a community savings pool. If you face difficulties, the community will help you, she says. Those who contribute can borrow money from the fund for emergencies, school fees for their children, or to build businesses. Encounter Lent Lenten Prayer: God of the journey, whenever we stumble on life s roads, you are with us. Your love enables us to get back up and start again. May our Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving be an encounter with your mercy. May our experience of your selfless love inspire us to go and do likewise, becoming companions for our neighbors most in need and for every member of our human family. Amen SHARE THE JOURNEY: A polluted river, poor soil, rising waters - these are some environmental reasons families migrate. They remind us to care for creation. Visit crsricebowl.org to watch a video and learn more about Burkina Faso. Learn more about CRS work in Burkina Faso. And learn how you can lend a hand to our brothers and sisters in Burkina Faso through our Helping Hands food packing program. Try our simple meal from Burkina Faso: Bean Cakes found on your Rice Bowl daily Calendar. Crsricebowl.org God of All people, You are the source of every blessing. May we be mindful of your presence now and as we use these CRS Rice Bowls in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. May they be instruments of encounter, bringing us closer to you, our God, and to our neighbors both near and far. May this time of reflection help us to see our role in caring for the most vulnerable-those experiencing hunger, lack of economic opportunity and violence that force them to migrate. Through these forty days, may we deepen our faith in you and love for one another, as we prepare for the great celebration of Easter. Amen This Week: Set aside five minutes a day with the daily calendar reflections on Jesus life and example. Prepare the simple meatless meal from Burkina Faso: Bean Cakes on Friday provided on the calendar. Put your Lenten sacrifices into your CRS rice bowl. 12 The Big Sea of Life My God, Thy sea is so big. My boat is so small. How many of us try to sail the sea of life alone, no compass, no charts, floating aimlessly hoping to find the shore of eternal life, if by accident. We don t have to do that. We can go to Holy Family Chapel and talk to the Master Sea Captain, Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, and ask Him to show us the way. After all, He is The Way, as well as The Truth, and The Life. He is there to help us sail through this vast sea of life, just for the asking. But, it doesn t do much good to come to Our Lord just once or twice, or only when the storms get too rough. We need to sit with Jesus often and have Him check our navigation, and make sure our sails are trimmed just right. So call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour with the Master Sea Captain every week. He s been through every storm, and He can calm the high winds, if need be, and He will even walk on water to get you safely home. With regular weekly visits, you ll find the waters calmer, and the storms not too bad. You might even stop to fish. But be careful. Our Lord has been known to fill the nets to overflowing. It won t matter so much if the sea is big and your boat is small. Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament will guide you along the way, until you see the sun shining on the shores of eternal happiness. You might even see the Master Fisher of men on the shore, making breakfast for you. Terry Dorencz Divorced and hurting? Divorce can be painful and often shattering. 14 Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education! A large group of people in our families and Church community are known as the Silent Generation, or Traditionalists. These folks were born from the mid-1920 s through the early-1940 s, making them between 74 and 93 years old. The children who grew up during this time worked very hard and kept quiet it was commonly understood that they should be seen and not heard. With some notable exceptions, the Silents are also known to focus on their careers rather than on activism, and people in this generation were largely encouraged to conform with social norms. This generation values traditional morals, safety, security and consistency, with work ethic and reliability being important to them. Silent Generation children were primarily raised in a paternalistic environment and taught to respect authority. Conformity and conservatism are prized by members of this Silent Generation, or Traditionalists. They tend to be good team players, preferring not to initiate conflict. They value being needed, are loyal to their country, and to their employers. Typically, Traditionalists work for one employer their whole lives. While they are less likely to change jobs to advance their careers, they expect loyalty in return. And when some were forced out of their jobs by newer generations coming into positions of authority, the change in values was difficult to understand, and at times devastating. The Silent Generation brought the strong work ethics of their parents into the factories of industrialized society. They grew up during lean times, including the Great Depression and WWII. They consider work a privilege, and are known to be the wealthiest generation. They believe you earn your own way through hard work long grueling hours in their prime enabled them to get ahead in their careers, and they believe others should do the same. Most of the Korean War soldiers were part of this generation. In the United States, the Silent Generation was comparatively small because the financial insecurity of the 1930 s and the war in the early 1940 s caused people to have fewer children. Significant members of the Silent Generation include a host of writers, artists, and athletes, and such political and civil rights leaders as Pope Francis, Pope Benedict XVI, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Queen Elizabeth II. Many of our Catholic Women Sharing Faith are part of the Silents, or Traditionalist Generation. Their work ethic is noteworthy, evidenced by the quantity of beautifully unique hand-crafted shawls they make and donate to our parish and beyond. Please feel free to call Pina Quatrini at (708) , or Maureen Cetera, (708) , to get a blessed shawl for yourself or for someone special you want to honor. Thanks to our generous donors, all shawls are freely given. And thanks to the members of Silent Generation for their hard work, and the values and ethics they share that have helped to shape our culture. AMEN! PRAYER AND FINDING JOY WITH GOD Saturday, March 10 6:30 to 8:00 am We all know that God can truly transform our lives. This weekend we continue our Lenten Journey with a discussion about how we can help God transform our children and those we love. Some St. George School families suffer through hardships while sending their children to our parish school. These families may be dealing with divorce, death, medical bills or loss of a job. They do not need the added burden of having to transfer their children out of our school. When a family is temporarily behind in tuition, they can call and set up an interview with the Hardship Committee. The Committee reviews each case individually and helps the family with tuition and other needs (food, job, etc.). Each interview is held in total confidence between the family and committee members. As the families lives return to normal, they are expected to repay the tuition loan. St. George Hardship Fund is supported by donations from Guardian Angels. Please make any donation to: St. George Hardship Committee, c/o St. George Church. God Bless You March 4, 2018 Third Sunday of Lent 15

16 ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations.
