Blessed is he who come in the name of the Lord, the king of Israel. John 12:13 Palm Sunday we honor Jesus by participating in our triumphant procession through the Church. At all the Masses everyone is invited to participate in this procession by receiving a palm at the entrances of church and gathering near the Book of Intentions. The procession will follow the Celebrant through the inside of the Church. Looking for volunteers to have their feet washed at our Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper. Please call the rectory if you would like to be one of those selected for this honor. Easter Flower Collection There will be a second collection this weekend, March 24/25 for Easter flowers. Thank you for helping us make the church beautiful for the Easter season. 2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477
3 The Triduum begins, when Lent ends, at sundown on Holy Thursday and ends at sundown on Easter Sunday. The Triduum is more than a reminder of what God did long ago. Instead, it is a continuous celebration of the Church's salvation today. During these three days the whole church fasts and prays with anticipation and hope. Through the symbols of water and the cross, and the liturgical actions of blessing and kissing the foot of the cross, the historical events of Jesus' life, death and Resurrection are made real in the here and now. We look at the Easter Triduum as one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from his resurrection. We do not spend all of the three days in church, but at various times during those days, we are called to church to gather and remember together. When we are not in church, we are asked to keep the spirit of those days even in our homes, if possible. Those days are not days of "business as usual." Chrism Mass Tuesday The Chrism Mass is celebrated each year at Holy Name Cathedral. During the Mass the Bishop will bless the oil of catechumens, used for adult catechumens and infants; the oil of the sick, for anointing the sick; the oil of chrism, used for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests and the consecration of altars. All three are basically an olive oil; chrism spices the air with the scent of a perfume, traditionally balsam symbolizing the fragrance of Christ. Since the bishop is the only minister who may consecrate chrism, this Mass highlights his ministry and our union with him. He will not baptize and confirm everyone in the parishes of the diocese, but he will be symbolically present in the chrism which the priests and deacons will use. These oils will be brought from the cathedral and presented at St. George on Holy Thursday. (Paul Turner, Modern Liturgy, 1997, Resource Publications, Inc.) Liturgy of the Lord s Passion and Veneration of the Cross 3:00 pm Good Friday (Day of Fast & Abstinence) After making a reverence to the altar, the priest prostrates himself and prays as a sign of the grief and sorrow of the Church. Following the Liturgy of the Word, Adoration of the Holy Cross begins as the priest or deacon brings a veiled cross into the sanctuary. After uncovering each part he sings, This is the Wood of the Cross! The people come forward to venerate the cross with a kiss. The Blessed Sacrament is brought out from repose and Holy Communion, consecrated on Holy Thursday, is distributed. We leave the church in silence again. Living Stations of the Cross 7:30 pm We remember the suffering Jesus endured in his Passion and death on the cross. We follow His walk from when he was tried by Pilate until he is laid in the tomb. These will be put together by our teens using contemporary music. Mass of the Lord s Supper Holy Thursday This Mass, celebrated in the evening begins the sacred Easter Triduum in which we are devoted to the remembrance of the Last Supper. This Mass is, first of all, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist. It is also the memorial of the institution of the priesthood. In addition, this Mass is the memorial of that love by which the Lord loved us even to death The Church bells are rung during the singing of the Gloria. Washing of feet, to show the Lord's commandment about fraternal charity, is performed during the homily to show our call to serve one another. A procession is formed for the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the place of reposition. The Blessed Sacrament is then incensed and Eucharistic song is sung. We leave church in silence. The Blessed Sacrament will be in repose in church until midnight for adoration. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil 7:30 pm The Roman Missal reminds us that this mother of all vigils is the greatest and most noble of all solemnities. On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory. We begin with a blazing fire outside the church after the sun sets. A new Pascal (Easter) Candle is lit and brought into the darkened church with a procession of lighted candles. We hear Old Testament readings beginning with the Story of Creation with Psalms sung by the choir. Finally we hear the Alleluia that has been quieted for Lent just before the Gospel is read. The candidates for Baptism come forward to be received into the church. NOTE: Because the Triduum is one Liturgy, there is no Mass on Saturday nor is there an anticipatory Mass in the evening. Rather the Easter Vigil is celebrated after sundown at 7:30 pm. March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday 3
4 MAUNDY THURSDAY COLLECTION What does "Maundy" mean? Derived from the Latin word mandatum, meaning "commandment," Maundy refers to the commands Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper: to love with humility by serving one another and to remember His sacrifice. Please remember the annual collection for Maundy Thursday, March 29. The response of the parish for this special collection will benefit the Bonaventure House through the St. George Missionary Group. Many different Missionary needs have received support as a result of this collection and God s message of love, hope and charity has reached so many needful people. Feast of Divine Mercy- Sunday, April 8 Procession and Devotion after the 11:30 am Mass What is the Feast of Divine Mercy? In the 1930s Our Lord appeared to a polish nun, Sister Faustina Kowalska. He gave her many messages about God s mercy and asked her to put them in writing. These messages are now compiled in St. Faustina s diary: Divine Mercy in my Soul. Jesus desire was to teach us more about God s infinite mercy in order to bring souls back to Him. Through these revelations he taught St. Faustina a prayer: The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Our Lord said to her, I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. (Diary 687, 1731) Our Lord also asked that the Sunday after Easter be declared Divine Mercy Sunday. He said to her, I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My mercy. (Diary 1109) The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion will obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 699) In other words, He is granting us the great gift of a Plenary Indulgence!! So, how do we obtain this plenary indulgence? On Divine Mercy Sunday, receive Holy Communion, and pray the indulgence prayers at the end of mass. These prayers are the Apostles creed, the Our Father, and a prayer for the Pope. Also, you need to have gone to Confession no more than 20 days before or after the Feast. Jesus said, On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. After the 11:30 am Mass we will have a procession with the Image of Mercy and the Blessed Sacrament, will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, have Benediction and an opportunity to venerate the Image. So, don t forget to go to Confession to be ready for this special feast and join us to celebrate God s great Mercy for us. 5 Finding the Meaning of Life Why are you here? Not here in church, rather, why do you, in particular, exist here and now as you are? Are you happy and satisfied with life? These are basic questions that get to the core meaning of life for each one of us. Registration deadline: Friday, April 6 For questions, contact Hildy Kingma at hkingma@vopf.com or (708) St. George School Used Goods Donation Drive April 20, 21 and 22, 2018 Friday, April 20: 1:30-3:30 pm Saturday, April 21: 9:00-11:00 am and 3:00-5:30 pm Sunday, April 22: 7:00 am - 1:30 pm Start your spring cleaning early and put all of your unwanted goods aside for our Third Annual Savers Donation Drive! Empty out your closets, keep your items out of landfills and help us raise funds! Keep it green when you clean! Moreover, why are some people happier or more satisfied with life than you? What is their secret to happiness? If you believe the advertising commercials and images of success and happiness that wash over our minds each day, then beauty, wealth, a perfect physique, homes and being surrounded by beautiful people are what brings smiles and happiness and by conclusion purpose and meaning to life. These are phantoms of success. We have been duped by our consumer mentality and constant brainwashing, by advertising, that the images portrayed in commercials are portraits of success. While there may be a fleeting moment of contentment, like King Midas, whose touch was golden, the things and bling of this world do not satisfy the hungers of the human heart. As we enter Holy Week with the celebration of PALM SUNDAY, we begin to reflect not only on the suffering, passion and death of our Lord, but also on our own mortality. We search for answers. For those who occasionally attend church services on these holy days, the answers are elusive. Church services, devotional prayers, Scripture and daily prayers are passing thoughts compared to sports, movies and electronic games which outweigh the use of their time. Service to others, whether through church ministries or local social service agencies, is a faded invitation. You get what you pay for. is a phrase most are familiar with, especially if we have been at the bad end of a deal. The same is true for the meaning of life. However the price is not valued in dollars and cents, but in how we spend our time, an even more precious commodity. Christ spent his life in service and love of humanity. Christ paid the price for our sins. Salvation is his gift to us. So great is his love that each morning his mercy is renewed and hope is restored to a fallen world. However, how we spend our time determines what we purchase with it. If you are feeling down and out, if you feel that life has lost its spark and meaning, look at the receipts you have for how you spent your time. At Christmas we passed out 1,100 copies of Matthew Kelly s book, Perfectly Yourself. Find it and read it this week. Share your thoughts with family and/or friends. It will open your eyes to the treasure we have in our Catholic faith. Join us for Mass each Sunday, just one hour of the 168 hours God gives you to spend each week, and you will find new meaning to life. You will find a parish family that is friendly, welcoming and invites you to become involved with us. The more time you spend with the Lord and in his service to others, the more treasure you will have stored up in heaven. Spiritually speaking: What s in your wallet? Fr. 9 PRO-LIFE GOOD FRIDAY OBSERVANCE AT FLOSSMOOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD St. George Pro-Life and St. Damian Pro-Life are sponsoring a Good Friday observance at the Flossmoor Planned Parenthood (19831 S. Governor's Highway, Flossmoor, IL) from 10:00 am-11:00 am on Friday, March 30. You are invited to join us for an hour of prayer in observance of Christ's death right there at a killing center where babies lives are being lost daily. Public parking is available 1/2 block north of the Planned Parenthood site on 198th St. which goes west from Governors Hwy. NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING CLASSES AVAILABLE ONLINE Why take health risks? When it comes to spacing children, many couples are turning to Natural Family Planning (NFP). NFP is 100% free of harmful side effects and does not involve the use of any medications, drugs, or devices. Proper use of NFP offers 99% effectiveness in postponing pregnancy as well as in helping couples with normal or marginal fertility achieve a pregnancy. Now you can learn Natural Family Planning without ever having to leave your house. Natural Family Planning classes are available online. All you need is a computer or ipad, and speakers. The course features presenters on a live video feed, and you can ask questions through a live chat feature. New virtual classes in English and Spanish begin monthly. Register at Questions? Contact Monica Cassidy at (847) HOLY FAMILY CHAPEL GOOD FRIDAY CLOSURE In observance of Good Friday, Holy Family Chapel will be closed from 6:00 pm on Holy Thursday (March 29) until 10:00 pm on Holy Saturday (March 31). NO RELIGIOUS ED CLASSES THIS WEEK There will be NO Religious Ed classes this week (March 28) due to Spring Break. We encourage all of our families to take part in the assorted liturgies of Holy Week and the Triduum. Second grade students are reminded to bring their Communion banners to class on Wednesday, April 4. Our final class of the current formation year will be on Wednesday, April 11. Many blessings to all of our families! Abandoned? I happened to pass by an old abandoned house the other day. It seemed like such a lonely place now that perhaps all the love that was once there, and the people who loved there, are gone. The Blessed Sacrament will be removed from Holy Family Chapel before the Mass on Holy Thursday and will not be returned until after the Mass on Holy Saturday. If you have the opportunity, stop by the chapel when the Blessed Sacrament is not there and see if you can feel the emptiness when Our Lord is taken from us. You can imagine how the apostles felt when they thought they lost Jesus forever. It s different for us because we know He ll be back. Come again to the chapel after the Blessed Sacrament is back and, once again, feel the peace and love and graces that He is offering to you. If you can feel this difference, and if you re not already a member of the A-Team (A for Adoration) call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour every week with the Blessed Sacrament. Every week you can thank Him for being there for us, and to get help for life s journey, until we re never ever separated from Him again. Terry Dorencz Friday Night at the Movies Featuring VICTORIA & ABDUL Friday, April 6, :00 pm, Rectory Meeting Room Rated PG13 In 1887 Queen Victoria is celebrating her 50 years on the throne at her Golden Jubilee. During the festivities she becomes fascinated with a young Indian man who was chosen to present her with a gift from his country to mark the occasion. The loss of her husband has left Victoria despondent, and when she meets Abdul she sees her own traditional and rigid existence through a new set of youthful and enthusiastic eyes. As their friendship develops, prevailing racial, class, and cultural prejudices of the time create turmoil among her family and royal court. 10 ENCOUNTER CRS USA Encounter Lent Palm Sunday March 25 - March 31, 2018 PALM SUNDAY For those we encountered on our Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl, and all people around the world who struggle to provide enough food to meet their families daily needs. May we welcome the homeless, the lost and the wanderer, recognizing that Jesus himself lived without a permanent home. We pray to the Lord Option for the Poor and Vulnerable Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Option for the Poor and Vulnerable, Jesus tells us to give special care to those who are most in need. He reminds us of our Christian duty to listen closely to those who often go unheard and to help those most vulnerable. HOLY WEEK Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:7-8 Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, one of the most significant moments of the Church year. During this week, we journey with Christ from his triumphant entry into Jerusalem, to his final meal with his closest friends and ultimately to his death on the cross. As we walk with Jesus through Holy Week, we call to mind the countless men, women and children who even today carry heavy crosses: crosses of hunger, of homelessness, of a lack of resources or security. In these brothers and sisters we encounter Christ, Christ who continues to walk that long road to Calvary. This final week of Lent is a time, too, to reflect on those words of St. Paul to the Philippians. Jesus emptied himself for us; how might we empty ourselves for others? Our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving have prepared us to wrestle with this question. We must always remember that Holy Week gives way to Easter; the fast turns into a feast. God wins the day. As we prepare to celebrate Easter joy, it is our responsibility as members of God s one human family to share that joy with everyone, near and far. ****Please return Rice Bowls at the weekend masses on April 7 & 8.**** This Lent, encounter our neighbors in the Archdiocese of Chicago and share their stories of hope. Finding hope amid violence in Chicago. The statistics say it all. Last year, the city of Chicago ended 2017 with 786 murders. This year, the number is already over 160 as of mid March. The community is struggling with. Many parishes are already working to bring peace, healing and guidance to the communities they serve. In Little Village, for example, a unique program at St. Agnes of Bohemia helps young people who are vulnerable to gang recruitment find a positive outlet. These teens use positive graffiti to create art that inspires and empowers. Their work has become a community movement that values equity and fairness.. In the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation works with over 250 young people and over 70 families who have been affected by violence and incarceration. Mentoring and building relationships is its chief work. Father Dave Kelly, who works at Precious Blood, explains they create safe places where people can speak their truth.. SHARE THE JOURNEY: This Lent, CRS Rice Bowl invites you, your family and community to journey alongside the Good Samaritan, to reflect on the question: Who is my neighbor? So many of our neighbors are on the move: migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, travelers. The Good Samaritan a traveler himself, one on the move shows us what it means to encounter the stranger, to accompany one in need and become a companion on the journey. Pope Francis has invited Catholics to build bridges of understanding and hospitality with migrants and refugees through Share the Journey campaign. How does the Parable of the Good Samaritan invite us to welcome the migrant, the refugee and others on the move. Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more. This Week: Crsricebowl.org Set aside five minutes a day with the daily calendar reflections on Jesus life and example. Pray for our vulnerable Brothers and Sisters during the Triduum and pray for willingness to accompany them on their Journey. Put your Lenten sacrifices into your CRS rice bowl. 10 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

12 Today, Palm Sunday, is the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. We pray for the grace to take up our own cross and follow Jesus through death to new life. During Lent, because of your gifts, we were able to bring Christ's mercy to families who called for our help for food and other bills. God bless you. Working Bikes Cooperative Bike Collection Mark your calendars! April 20, 21 and 22, 2018 Working Bikes gives donated bicycles new life by redistributing them as tools of empowerment in local and global communities. History Working Bikes is a 501(c)(3) organization that was started in Phnom Pehh, Cambodia, May 4, 2014 Woman carrying bags on her bike by Lee Ravenscroft, Amy Little and a group of volunteers dedicated to recycling bikes, supporting bike culture and helping international and local projects. Since its inception, Working Bikes has recovered tens of thousands of discarded and donated bicycles from Chicago and the Midwest, and has redistributed more than 50,000 of them worldwide. Working Bikes is able to do the work we do because of the generous support of hundreds of individual donors, recycle event organizers and our bicycle drop off locations. A big, big, big thank you to all of these wonderful people. Impact Countless bicycles are discarded or sit unused in garages in the United States every year. But, in a developing country a bicycle can truly change the life of an individual, their family and their community. Bicycling is, of course, a form of transportation. But, bicycles are also used for towing cargo, and even as a source of electricity through the creation of pedal-powered machines. In areas plagued by poverty, high levels of unemployment and lack of reliable, accessible transportation, a bicycle can help provide access to jobs, education, medical attention and other resources. Global Impact: Working Bikes ships thousands of bicycles each year to our partners in countries throughout Latin America and Africa, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, Uganda, Lesotho, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Ghana. Local Impact: Working Bikes donates to individuals and partner organizations here in Chicago, providing transportation to people in homeless transition, refugee resettlement and youth empowerment programs in our own community. Working Bikes donates over 6,000 bicycles each year to our international and local partners. The PORT Ministries Easter Collection THIS WEEK! The office will reopen on Monday, April 2 at 8:00 am. Pope Francis has asked our parish to support Christians in the Holy Land. Through the Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world to stand in solidarity with the Church in the Holy Land. When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you become an instrument of peace in a troubled land. In these challenging times in the Middle East, your support means that our church will conduct parish ministry, provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee centers in the Holy Land. Christians, along with all of the clergy and religious who serve in the Holy Land, will deeply appreciate your prayers and financial help! The political, religious and military challenges in the Holy Land are more complex than ever. The wars, unrest and instability have been especially hard on Christians. Our parish will support Christians in the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection, as requested by Pope Francis. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy Land. PLEASE BE GENEROUS! For more information about Christians in the Holy Land, visit COME CELEBRATE APRIL SHOWERS OF DIVINE MERCY WITH US Since the First Sunday of April is the feast of Easter, we will celebrate our Family First Sunday on the SECOND Sunday in the month of April. April 8 is the Feast of Divine Mercy, when Jesus showers us with the ultimate gift of God s mercy resulting from His Death and Resurrection. Come enjoy those April Showers of Mercy by celebrating with your parish family after all the Sunday Masses that day. We will celebrate the Easter Season, the coming of Spring and the beauty produced by all April Showers! As always, the Cahill Center will open at 7:15 am for anyone wishing to drop off any donations for our breakfast buffet prior to going to Mass. Take a few moments to join us for a quick cup of something and a few moments of conversation! March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday 13
14 Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education! Baby Boomers Part 2 (continued from last week) A Series on Generations Boomers grew up at a time of dramatic social change, and the group divides between proponents of change and more conservative individuals. Some analysts believe this division played out politically since the time of the Vietnam War to the mid-2000 s, to some extent defining the political landscape and division of the U.S. This generation is divided amongst those who organized against the Vietnam War, or fought and died in that same war. Baby Boomers found that their music, most notably rock and roll, was an expression of their generational identity. They experienced The Beatles, Motown and Woodstock; Boomer music is now known as classic. Between 2010 and 2030, one in five Americans will be a senior citizen. The density of the Baby Boomers may put a strain on Medicare, with individuals over the age of 65 increasing by 73%. There is growing dialogue on how to manage aging and end-of-life issues as this generation typically has avoided longterm planning. It is argued that Boomers are in a state of denial about their own demise, and may be leaving undue economic burden on their children for retirement and health care. We hope that everyone knows our blessed prayer shawls are multi-generational signs of love, and are actually hugs from God, when given with that intent. Please feel free to call Pina Quatrini at (708) , or Maureen Cetera at (708) ; we can leave a shawl at the rectory for you to collect at your convenience. With love! Thursday Mornings in March: 9:30-11:30 am in the Quiet Room 3/29/2018 No meeting - Triduum services begin on Holy Thursday Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.
