1 October 18, 2015 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2015 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday 8:45 am: Tuesday & Wednesday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am & 6 pm Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME To Serve Why did God make you? is one of the questions from The Baltimore Catechism. The answer starts out: To know, to love and to serve God in this world and be happy forever with him in the next. Those born prior to Vatican II appreciated this approach to religion. It was short questions and answers. They were easy to learn and repeat back. Most of this generation remember those irst two questions and answers. There are a couple of things wrong with that format. First, we were required to memorize and repeat back what we learned without much emphasis on whether or not we understood it. Secondly, it focused on giving right answers with a head full of knowledge and leave the ministry to others. Father said Mass and parishioners attended Mass. It was a passive approach to faith that could earn salvation through devotional prayers, rosaries, attending Mass and Communion and, of course, following the commandments. Evangelization was not part of our vocabulary and deinitely not OUR responsibility. There were so many priests and nuns who could do that. How times have changed!! From the beginning of Christianity the gospel imperative is Go out to all the world and tell the good news! It is true for us today as it was when Jesus walked the earth. God loves us so much he has entrusted The Good News to us. Similar to parents who for the irst time go on vacation leaving their eldest teen in charge of things, or giving that teen the keys to the car without riding along with them. God is counting on us to do the right thing. How have you been involved at St. George? How have you shared the Good News of not only what Jesus said and did but, what you are doing and saying about the ministry at St. George. Life was so much easier when we could point to the clergy priests and nuns to measure the success of a parish. When we get to heaven each of us will have to answer to our stewardship of time, talent and treasure. Next week we will have the Parish Council present and invite parishioners to learn about and become involved in our Education Commission. We will have a blessing for our children with their parents at each Mass in celebration of World Youth Day. Our gathering of men each Saturday morning at 6:308:00 am for That Man Is You in O Connell Hall strengthens not only those who attend, but their families as well who beneit from strong faithilled male leadership. Young and old alike all have a role to play in salvation history. God has blessed us in many ways. We have been tested as well in many ways like the irst apostles. What is your response? How do you support the ministry at St. George? Opportunity knocks, but you must open the door. Invite Christ into your heart and home. Fr. Ken Fleck

2 Saturday, Oct. 24 6:30 to 8:00 am O Connell Hall Week 7 Integrity of Action This week s program is about action! Our actions must be in harmony with the clarity of our thoughts for us to be men of integrity. These principles are true for both married and unmarried men. It s nice to talk about inviting God to be present in our marriage and family life, but we must take concrete actions to make it happen. What are the Catholic Social Teachings? During the next weeks we will reflect on the Seven Themes of the Catholic Social Teaching focusing on one teaching each week. Please take time to consider these teachings of the Catholic Church that provide us with direction on how we can actively live out our Catholic Faith through the teachings of the Gospel. We will also share how the wonderful people of St. George Parish are already living out the Gospel! Praise the Lord... Alleluia! Your Opinion Counts The Pastoral Council looks forward to hearing from St. George parishioners. Please place your questions, comments or concerns in the suggestion box located in the back of church. (Please note: your name must appear on the form so someone can reply back.) Our discussions this week will include: The Church Guides Us in Finding God in The Family Integrity of Action in the Home The Issue is Freedom The Enslavement of Sin Freedom in Christ The Challenge of the Christian Marriage Please join us and bring a friend! That Man Is You! meets every Saturday morning at 6:30 am for breakfast in O Connell Hall at St. George School. All adult men, 18 and older, are invited to join us. For more information about this program, please contact Don Budny at (708) ; dbudny3@aol.com or Gary Hendzell at (708) ; ghendzell@msn.com. Prepare for Winter with St. George PART Cards Autumn is here and snow and cold are coming. How can you prepare for winter and support St. George School or our parish ministries? Use PART cards to pay for your yard work supplies, repairs and furnace needs. Whether you are a diligent planner who is planting bulbs or a frantic scrambler who needs to fix that thermal window, St. George PART cards can bring a portion of your winter preparation payments back to St. George School. With PART cards from Ace Hardware, Home Depot or Menards four percent would be rebated back to St. George School. If you re a school parent or assisting a child in religious education, 2% of that would be credited to the student s tuition/fees and the other 2% goes to St. George School to reduce educational expenses. Imagine if you used PART cards to purchase yard waste bags, a rake, screens for gutters and downspouts, water buckets, cleaning supplies, a new snow blower, a shovel, rock salt for melting ice and clear plastic insulating film for windows. Every $100 spent would return $4 to St. George Parish. Prepare your household for winter buy PART cards and help St. George School. 2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

After working with the Archdiocese Facilities and Construction Department, engineers, roofing and insulating companies, we have found that in extreme cold weather conditions, condensation builds up in the roof causing water damage to the church walls and ceilings. The repair project is tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, October 26, and completion is targeted to be finished on or around November 19. During this time, the west section of Church will be closed including the south entrance, Cry Room, Reconciliation Room and washrooms for three weekends. You will only be able to enter the Church through the north entrance on 175 th Street and the east entrance which is handicap accessible. The parking area located directly south of the Church will be used for storage and staging area. Because of limited handicap parking spaces, those in need of handicap parking can use the reserved spaces located on the east side of Church. We have seating for 656 in the main body and balcony of Church. We would encourage those who are able to sit up in the balcony to do so as it would give more room on the main floor for those who have difficulty with stairs and cannot sit in the balcony. Since we will not have access to the Reconciliation Room, the priests will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, face to face, at our normal times in the Rectory office which can be entered through the Bride s Room. You can also call the Rectory Office to schedule a time for Reconciliation. If our accommodations do not work, St. Julie offers Reconciliation on Saturdays from 3:30 pm to 4:00 pm, St. Stephen on Saturdays from 8:45 am to 9:30 am and St. Anthony on Saturdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. For these four weeks, our Church will be closed during the week except for Funerals. Daily Masses will be held in the Cahill Center Meeting Rooms. For parishioners attending 7:30 am Mass, please be careful and considerate to parents and school children who are being dropped off at this time. Thank you for your patience through this project. 6 ALL SOULS DAY REMEMBRANCE MASS We will be having a special Memorial Mass on All Souls Day, Monday, November 2 at 7:00 pm to remember all of our parishioners who have passed away in the past year. We invite ALL to join with your parish family to remember those who have gone before us. This is a wonderful opportunity to show the support our parish offers to our family members. We will have fellowship and refreshments following the Mass in the Cahill Center in Meeting Rooms 1-3. Please use the main entrance to Church (north entrance on 175th Street) or the east entrance, as the south entrance (the entrance closest to the school building) will be closed for roof repairs. Please join us in Church on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 pm. Crosses We all have our crosses to carry of different sizes and shapes. It s been said that God gives the biggest crosses to those He loves the most. He gave His only Son, who He loved so much, the biggest and heaviest cross. It was the heaviest because it carried the weight of all the sins of mankind. But we carry our crosses, sometimes grudgingly, sometimes willingly, hoping for help along the way. There is help for us. We can go to Holy Family Chapel and ask Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament for help. Our Lord is there anxiously waiting to make our yoke easy, and our burden light, just for the asking. We can also thank Him for carrying His cross because by His Holy Cross He has redeemed the world. If you re not already a member of the A-team (A for adoration), why not call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour every week with the Blessed Sacrament. With regular visits with Our Lord. and with His help, you ll be able to handle any cross you have to carry. Then one day you may notice all the crosses stacked up outside the gates of heaven. Once people pass through those gates their crosses aren t needed. 7 WOW! Good News...Catholic Social Teaching alive and well at St. George Parish! First Catholic Social Teaching: Life and Dignity of the Human Person The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is sacred and that the dignity of the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society. This belief is the foundation of all the principles of our social teaching. In our society, human life is under direct attack from abortion and euthanasia. The value of human life is being threatened by cloning, embryonic stem cell research and the use of the death penalty. The intentional targeting of civilians in war or terrorist attacks is always wrong. Catholic teaching also calls on us to work to avoid war. Nations must protect the right to life by finding increasingly effective ways to prevent conflicts and resolve them by peaceful means. We believe that every person is precious, that people are more important than things and that the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. Amazing! How many ways do the people of St. George answer the call of Jesus to respect the dignity of the human person? So many... St. Vincent DePaul - Provides acts of charity to those in need..food, shelter and support. Pro-Life - Prays for respect for life from conception to natural death, sponsors blessings for mothers and their pre-born children, educates the parish through bulletin articles, works on relevant public actions for legislative issues, assists pregnancy help centers and participates in area Pro-Life activities. Catholic Women Sharing Faith - Are active in the Prayer Shawl Ministry in which the ladies offer prayers, knit and crochet shawls for those in need of a "hug from God." Acts of Faith - collections for needed supplies for the PORT Ministries; bike collection for Working Bikes Cooperative; attending prayer services at the Broadview Immigrant Detention Center; making blankets for St. Coletta's residents; Fair Trade sales - support to farmers trying to provide food, education and a shelter for their families; providing educational opportunities at St. George regarding prison ministry, racism, human trafficking, gun violence, poverty and issues that diminish the dignity of life for individuals. Day Break Shelter - St. George parishioners prepare and provide meals and friendship for residents of the shelter. Sharing Parish - Parishioners give regular monetary support to St. Gerard Majella. Christmas Gift Collection - Parishioners donate gifts for St. Coletta, St. Gerard Majella, The Women's Center and the Crisis Center. Life Moves On - Offers comfort through personal contact to those who are grieving a loss. S.P.R.E.D. - Provides education and faith formation to children with learning or developmental disabilities. Ministers of Care (Agape) - Prays, visits and brings Holy Communion to the homebound and hospitalized. Ministry of Praise & Mercy - Prays for the community of St. George from home, usually a ministry for homebound parishioners. Youth Ministry & Young Adult Ministry - Mission Trips to provide help in impoverished or disaster communities, help at the Day Break Shelter. Meeting Locations - St. George provides a meeting place for Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon and Narcotics Anonymous. All of the above mentioned groups at St. George respond to the "Dignity of the Human Person." We are truly blessed. Consider making your faith come alive and explore these opportunities to participate. Harvest of Hope The past week, parishioners grew and donated 21 pounds of fresh vegetables to our local Tinley Park Food Pantry. Thank you for your generosity and for feeding the hungry. Total for this year, 1,146 pounds. Halpin and Corin K. Specht Celebrated Marriage The following couples celebrated the sacrament of Holy Matrimony last weekend: Joseph Fox and Krystina Sepulveda This past Tuesday the men and women of the parish who enjoy learning more about the faith by examining more closely those who have lived the faith in an extraordinary way, arrived in Peoria, IL to experience a museum devoted to Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen who has been named venerable. Fr. Tomy celebrated Mass with us in a quaint side Chapel. During his homily he stated how Archbishop Sheen is well known in other countries; i.e. India. Fr. Tomy referenced Archbishop Sheen as a prophet who preached to America and the world the need to change and turn back to God and grow closer to God. Sister Leah of the Franciscan Sisters of St. John the Baptist gave us a tour around the shrine building and was most gracious. We enjoyed a movie of the life of bishop Sheen, saw many artifacts and had an opportunity to shop in the religious goods store. The museum allowed us to encounter the Bishop in a new way and see firsthand how he influenced the world. Fulton Sheen began giving National talks on the radio in 1928 which was known as the Catholic Hour and had four million listeners. In 1950, the Bishops invited Fr. Sheen to be the National Director of the Society of the Propagation of the Faith in charge of the mission work of the U. S. Catholic church in the whole world. In 1951, Cardinal Spellman of New York suggested Sheen try a new approach to evangelization, television, and Life is Worth Living became a very popular show. He wanted to be close to the Eastern Europeans who were being persecuted so he arranged a broadcast of a Byzantine/Latin liturgy behind the Iron Curtin. Bishop Sheen was a prolific writer and authored sixty six books. An alleged miracle is under study of a boy now five years old, James Fulton Engstrom, and how his mother had asked for Fulton Sheen s intercession to watch over her pregnancy. The pregnancy was normal; however, James Fulton was still born. Bonnie (James Fulton s Mother) prayed to Archbishop Sheen while CPR was performed on her newborn son who was lifeless for sixty-one minutes; only then did he begin to breathe. It is a lasting healing and James s current health is normal. We were all given a beautiful image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the blessing of Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C. The blessings flow from ourselves, to our families, to our parish. For more information on Fulton Sheen s life and cause visit As a courtesy to others, please remember to turn off all cell phones and electronic devices during Mass. Thank you! Call to Prayer for the Success of the Synod of Bishops on the Pastoral Challenges for the Family Having met at their annual spring meeting, the Bishops of Illinois, in a spirit of solidarity with our Holy Father Pope Francis, call upon all Catholics to pray for the success of the upcoming Synod of Bishops on the Pastoral Challenges for the Family. The Synod, scheduled for this fall, October 4-25, at the Vatican, will discuss and formulate appropriate pastoral guidelines for the pastoral care of the person and the family. Information about the Synod may be found at: The Bishops of Illinois request that their churches prayerfully ask God for the gift of the Holy Spirit upon the participant, as well as the whole Church. Parishes are asked to include this intention in the Prayer of the Faithful at the Eucharist regularly in the weeks and months ahead of the October gathering in Rome. World Meeting of Families Prayer God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters in the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in idelity to the Gospel. May the example of the Holy Family, with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us! These prayer cards can be found at the exits of church or simply clip this article. Recite this prayer with your families.
