2 The Triduum begins, when Lent ends, at sundown on Holy Thursday and ends at sundown on Easter Sunday. The Triduum is more than a reminder of what God did long ago. Instead, it is a continuous celebration of the Church's salvation today. During these three days the whole church fasts and prays with anticipation and hope. Through the symbols of water and the cross, and the liturgical actions of blessing and kissing the foot of the cross, the historical events of Jesus' life, death and Resurrection are made real in the here and now. We look at the Easter Triduum as one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from his resurrection. We do not spend all of the three days in church, but at various times during those days, we are called to church to gather and remember together. When we are not in church, we are asked to keep the spirit of those days even in our homes, if possible. Those days are not days of "business as usual." Chrism Mass Tuesday The Chrism Mass is celebrated each year at Holy Name Cathedral. During the Mass the Bishop will bless the oil of catechumens, used for adult catechumens and infants; the oil of the sick, for anointing the sick; the oil of chrism, used for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests and the consecration of altars. All three are basically an olive oil; chrism spices the air with the scent of a perfume, traditionally balsam symbolizing the fragrance of Christ. Since the bishop is the only minister who may consecrate chrism, this Mass highlights his ministry and our union with him. He will not baptize and confirm everyone in the parishes of the diocese, but he will be symbolically present in the chrism which the priests and deacons will use. These oils will be brought from the cathedral and presented at St. George on Holy Thursday. (Paul Turner, Modern Liturgy, 1997, Resource Publications, Inc.) Liturgy of the Lord s Passion and Veneration of the Cross 3:00 pm Good Friday (Day of Fast & Abstinence) After making a reverence to the altar, the priest prostrates himself and prays as a sign of the grief and sorrow of the Church. Following the Liturgy of the Word, Adoration of the Holy Cross begins as the priest or deacon brings a veiled cross into the sanctuary. After uncovering each part he sings, This is the Wood of the Cross! The people come forward to venerate the cross with a kiss. The Blessed Sacrament is brought out from repose and Holy Communion, consecrated on Holy Thursday, is distributed. We leave the church in silence again. Living Stations of the Cross 7:30 pm We remember the suffering Jesus endured in his Passion and death on the cross. We follow His walk from when he was tried by Pilate until he is laid in the tomb. These will be put together by our teens using contemporary music. Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturdays after the 4:00 pm Mass and Sundays after the 7:30 am and 9:30 am Masses. There is no Reconciliation on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday. Mass of the Lord s Supper Holy Thursday This Mass, celebrated in the evening begins the sacred Easter Triduum in which we are devoted to the remembrance of the Last Supper. This Mass is, first of all, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist. It is also the memorial of the institution of the priesthood. In addition, this Mass is the memorial of that love by which the Lord loved us even to death The Church bells are rung during the singing of the Gloria. Washing of feet, to show the Lord's commandment about fraternal charity, is performed during the homily to show our call to serve one another. A procession is formed for the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the place of reposition. The Blessed Sacrament is then incensed and Eucharistic song is sung. We leave church in silence. The Blessed Sacrament will be in repose in church until midnight for adoration. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil 7:30 pm The Roman Missal reminds us that this mother of all vigils is the greatest and most noble of all solemnities. On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory. We begin with a blazing fire outside the church after the sun sets. A new Pascal (Easter) Candle is lit and brought into the darkened church with a procession of lighted candles. We hear Old Testament readings beginning with the Story of Creation with Psalms sung by the choir. Finally we hear the Alleluia that has been quieted for Lent just before the Gospel is read. The candidates for Baptism come forward to be received into the church. NOTE: Because the Triduum is one Liturgy, there is no Mass on Saturday morning nor is there an anticipatory Mass in the evening. Rather the Easter Vigil is celebrated after sundown at 7:30 pm. 2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

4 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY AT ST. GEORGE This year we offer three different opportunities to celebrate and honor God s great mercy. MOVIE: The Face of Mercy Tuesday, April 23 6:30 pm, Cahill Center, Meeting Room 1 This is a documentary of the Divine Mercy story beginning with St. Faustina s visions and revelations, to Saint John Paul II, and testimonies from Immaculee Ilibagiza, from a former NFL linebacker, a former MLB baseball player and others whose lives were transformed by praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Feast of Divine Mercy Sunday Sunday, April 28 11:30 am Mass followed by Procession and Devotion After the 11:30 am Mass we will have a procession with the Image of Mercy and the Blessed Sacrament, will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, have Benediction and an opportunity to venerate the Image. Divine Mercy Sunday is an official feast of the Catholic Church instituted by Pope John Paul II as a result of messages given to St. Faustina by Our Lord Jesus Christ during the 1930s. Jesus asked that the first Sunday after Easter be declared as a feast for His Divine Mercy and promised to pour out many graces on that day. He said to her, I want to grant a complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy. (Diary 1109) The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion will obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 699) In other words, He is granting us the great gift of a Plenary Indulgence!! So, how do we obtain this plenary indulgence? On Divine Mercy Sunday, receive Holy Communion, and pray the indulgence prayers at the end of mass. These prayers are the Apostles creed, the Our Father and a prayer for the Pope. Also, you need to have gone to Confession no more than 20 days before or after the Feast. Jesus said, On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. To prepare for this day Our Lord asked St. Faustina that a Novena of chaplets be prayed. He asked that this Novena be prayed beginning on Good Friday. On each day of the Novena, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is offered for a different group of souls. Quoting from her diary, Our Lord said, On each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My Bitter Passion, for graces for these souls. I have placed pamphlets with the Novena at the entrances of the Church. Pray it at home with your family and join us on April 28. Divine Mercy Holy Hour Friday, May 17, 7:00 pm Deacon Jerry Souta will hold a Holy Hour celebrating Divine Mercy beginning on this day. This Holy Hour will be celebrated on the third Friday of July (July 19) and September (September 20). Come spend time with our Lord to thank Him for His great Mercy. In Memory of Fr. Blaise Coehlo It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Fr. Blaise. He died peacefully on Sunday, March 31. He had a stroke, was immobilized as a result, and spent his last few months in a clergy retirement home. We are told that he had a peaceful passing. He was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at St. Andrews cemetery in Bandra, Mumbai. Fr. Blaise served St. George as a resident priest for over twenty years until his iftieth anniversary as a priest after which he returned to Goa, India, his home city in We will celebrate a memorial Mass for Fr. Blaise on Saturday, Aprill 27, 8:00am Mass. May he rest in peace. 4 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

Just like New Year s resolutions, some have not kept their Lenten commitments and feel like, What s the use!?! DON T GIVE UP! Christ endured to the end, not because he is God, but because he loves you and me. This is the power of love. If you think about it you have seen this in senior couples who give encouragement and hope to one another through the difficulties and failings of life and their marriage give them hope, not answers. Promises based on love give us the courage to try one more time. If you have failed, or if you know of someone who has fallen away from practicing their faith, call them back with the gift of your love. God is counting on us to be the ones who follow in the footsteps of Christ and do what he did; listen, forgive, love, heal and give hope. It is a sacrifice to attend church services three or four days in a row. This is a bonding event. The Triduum (meaning three days) is a single liturgy that encompasses the central mystery of our faith. We celebrate the institution of the Eucharist and Priesthood at the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. This begins the three day commemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus. We share as a family of faith with a communal meal after sharing at the table of the Lord. Afterwards, we take time to pray silently in the presence of the Lord for our loved ones and for ourselves as we are invited to come and pray one hour with me. We not only remember Jesus Agony in the Garden, but our own trials and pray that we will have the courage and love to endure to the end. On Good Friday we commemorate the Passion and Death of Our Lord at 3:00 pm as we read the gospel of his Passion and Death, reverence His cross, receive our Lord in Communion, and silently leave church holding in our hearts how He loved us to His death. This is my body given up for you. There is a second commemoration, our Living Stations of the Cross, as our youth portray the Passion and Death of our Lord at 7:30 pm. To accommodate those attending either of these liturgies we will offer a Fish Fry to benefit our multi-church project, Help Build Hope. All proceeds from this dinner will help build two homes on our church parking lot Saturday, June 8. Holy Saturday is a day of preparation. We have a blessing of Easter baskets and foods in O Connell Hall at noon. At 7:30 pm we gather in church to celebrate the Easter Vigil. As darkness falls upon the earth and reminds us of the darkness that sometimes overwhelms us, we light the Paschal Candle which symbolically proclaims the Resurrection of Christ. It is a longer liturgy than usual, beautifully recalling salvation history in Scripture and songs of remembrance and praise. Reverently we move from darkness to light, from despair to hope, from death to life. The choirs have been practicing during Lent for the joyful Masses of Easter. When you take time to celebrate your Catholic faith your sacrifice of time is united with the sacrifice of Christ. You will find new reflections of your life, struggles, forgiveness and hope if you invest your time. Come as a family. God so loved the world He gave his only Son. What will you give to say Thank You? That s what Eucharist means in Greek - Thanksgiving. Fr. Ken Fleck 6 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

9 Crucify Him! CRS Rice Bowl, Week 6, April JOURNEY THROUGH HOLY WEEK GOD OF HOPE, WE ENCOUNTER YOU IN THE STRANGER. We have journeyed to other countries to encounter members of our human family. We have shared their struggles, their courage and their triumphs. Now, we are called to be unafraid to share the journey with those in our own communities whom we have not yet encountered. Lenten Prayer God of hope, You journey with us through the desert. You challenge us to become more like Christ. During this Lenten season, may our prayers, fasting and almsgiving give us the courage to go forth from these 40 days in the desert to share our gifts with the world. May our encounter with you allow us to bring your hope to all of our human family. Amen Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more, or contact your local diocese to find out about projects CRS Rice Bowl supports in your community. Please drop your Rice Bowls off at the entrances of church on April 27 & 28. Don t Forget: 25% of your CRS Rice Bowl donation stays in your local community! Today we commemorate Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem. People were praising Him and laying palm branches in His path. I wonder what Jesus thought, knowing that these same people who were praising Him would, in a few days, demand that they crucify Him. I think He loved them anyway. He always loved sinners, not the sin, but the sinners. A few days later, after He established the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist by proclaiming This is My Body Do This in memory of Me., He was taken away from His apostles and friends, who ran away and hid. All except His Mother and the teenage apostle, John. They stayed near Jesus until the very end. But, on the third day Jesus arose and returned for a time. We commemorate Jesus being taken away by our taking of the Holy Eucharist from Holy Family Chapel and closing the chapel until after the Holy Saturday service when Our Lord is once again with us, not just for a while, but forever. This is the same Jesus that died for us 2,000 years ago. Before He ascended into heaven, He said He would stay with us until the end of the age, and there He is in Holy Family Chapel, keeping His word. Show Our Lord that you are not one to run away from Him, but you are one who wants to be with Him often. Call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour every week with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Every week you can tell Our Lord that you love Him, and that you love how He loves you. He will cherish the time you spend with Him in His Heart forever. Consider the time spent as investments into your eternal retirement plan. If you didn t read this article, check elsewhere in the bulletin to find out when the chapel will be closed. Terry Dorencz RICE BOWL RETURN WEEKEND The time has come to turn in your Rice Bowls. Please bring them to church on the weekend of April 27 & 28. Baskets will be ready for you to deposit your Rice Bowls at the entrances of church. Children can also return their Rice Bowls to school and to their Religious Education classes. Thank you, St. George parishioners, for your generosity. By participating in CRS RICE BOWL, you are participating in global solidarity. You are helping your brothers and sisters both worldwide and in the United States experience a life with hope and dignity. CRS assists needy families to gain the skills and confidence to create a sustainable income so they can provide their children with a home, nourishment, and an education. 10 PRO-LIFE STATIONS OF THE CROSS & MONTHLY VIGIL AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN FLOSSMOOR Coordinating Parishes: St. George (Construction Site) Incarnation Our Lady of the Woods St. Elizabeth Seton St. Francis of Assisi St. Julie Billiart St. Michael June 7-9, 2019 Given that the monthly vigil date falls on Good Friday, we will begin with Stations of the Cross at 10:00 am followed by the standard vigil displaying signs, continuing until noon. You are invited to attend a scheduled monthly vigil at Flossmoor Planned Parenthood (19831 S. Governor's Highway, Flossmoor, IL). The next occurrence of this monthly vigil will take place from 10:00 am-noon Friday, April 19 and continue on the third Friday of each month (next one on Friday May 17 from 10:00 am - noon). Given the volume of abortions committed on Fridays, please join us in solidarity with the babies lost to abortion and their injured mothers. Public parking is available 1/2 block north of the Planned Parenthood site on 198th St. which goes west from Governors Hwy. OPPOSE RADICAL ABORTION BILLS The stakes have been raised many notches by current attempts in Springfield to pass bills that almost fully de-regulate abortion in the state of Illinois. How can we focus on anything else but working to prevent these radical abortion bills from becoming law? Get details below and take action now. HB 2467 or SB 1594 would repeal the Parental Notice of Abortion Act, so that young girls could get abortions without their parents ever knowing about it. HB 2495 or SB 1942 would virtually de-regulate abortion. Either of these bills would end inspection of abortion clinics and reporting of abortion statistics, allow non-doctors to perform abortions, eliminate conscience protection for medical professionals who are unwilling to perform abortions, force all of us to pay for abortions through private health insurance plans, and repeal the ban on partial birth abortion. Call Senator Michael Hastings (19 th Dist) at (217) and Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin (38 th Dist) at (217) to express opposition to these bills. If you are not in the legislative districts mentioned above, you can find the correct ones at: Visit our Website You can check Mass times, the calendar, schedules, staff information, view a slide show and more! As this Lenten season draws to a close, perhaps you have discerned that becoming more active in your parish is a way for you to further serve God. I ask you to consider joining us as a Eucharistic Minister at the mass that you normally attend. You will find that it enriches your mass experience, and as you are already at mass, there is very little time commitment beyond that. If you are hearing His voice you can reach me at (815) My name is Teri Rycyzyn and I am the coordinator for Eucharistic Ministers here at St George. I will be having a training session soon and would love for you to join us. MAUNDY THURSDAY COLLECTION What does "Maundy" mean? Derived from the Latin word mandatum, meaning "commandment," Maundy refers to the commands Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper: to love with humility by serving one another and to remember his sacrifice. Please remember the annual collection for Maundy Thursday. A portion of the funds will be donated to a number of Catholic Charities throughout the world through the St. George Missionary and Prayer Group. Also, a portion of the funds will benefit the Bonaventure House. Thank you for your generosity. At our Holy Mass we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ. Please pray for those who are hungry or without hope. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the rectory at (708) , and leave a message for the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Together, we can help those who are hungry. April 14, 2019 Palm Sunday of the Passion of Our Lord 13

Attention Veterans and Spouses! Our company assists veterans and/or their spouses in qualifying and receiving a little know benefit called "The Veterans Aid and Attendance Pension", which helps veterans receive up to $2,127 per month tax free to apply toward the cost of extended medical care. To qualify, a veteran (or the spouse) must need assistance with two activities of daily living OR be blind OR have dementia and served during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam or the Gulf War. The veteran did not have to actually serve in the war zone, but must have been on active duty during those time periods. President Truman introduced this benefit after WWII, anticipating that our veterans would need aid for medical coverage as they aged. This benefit may be used for care in the home, assisted or independent facilities and skilled care. For more information, please call Veterans Consultants Inc. at (815) or (708) Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477
