Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME The Audacity of Hope Today is the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. For some Christian communities this period of the first six Sundays of ordinary time, up until the first Sunday of Lent, is the Epiphany of the early Church. Our readings will focus on witnessing to our faith. Today s focus is on the role of John the Baptist. Next Sunday we hear of the beginning of the public ministry of Jesus in calling the apostles. After that the Beatitudes which spell out what the Kingdom of God is all about - not riches, power or influence - rather values that go beyond this world. By the end of this week we will inaugurate a new president of the United States, Donald Trump. During his campaign he spoke of often reading Scriptures and was challenged by a reporter to share his favorite passage. Faith is not a matter of memorizing Scripture quotes. It is living faith each day. This will be the challenge of the new administration - not just the president. Put the interest of the people in line with the values upon which our nation was founded. While we are a nation that states In God We Trust our actions will tell the truth. If we are a nation that trusts in God, then our values will respect all religions, not just Christianity. It will challenge us to build bridges, not walls. Jesus challenged the status quo of the religious and civic leaders to see all people as being worthy of the love of God and the dignity of life. Jesus established no campaign funds, no house of worship, no retirement plan. His plan was simply to let all know the love of God was transformative if we allow it to change our lives first. Love is sacrificial - the crucifix in church and in our homes is the ultimate symbol of the love of God. If we wish to follow Christ, then we too must take up our cross and follow in his footsteps. Sacrifice and compromise are the pillars upon which responsible stewardship of power and resources, bound by love, build the Kingdom of God. Prayer is important; but, it is offered not to change God or win God s favor. He already loves us. Prayer is to change our hearts to the will of the Father, thy kingdom come, thy will be done. Therefore we have the audacity to hope in God s Spirit leading and guiding our newly elected leaders to be good stewards. We must work hand in hand with them, challenging at times, shaping a common vision, guided by the faith that has seen us through tough times and leads us onward. For our part we must also give witness to our faith here and now. Share it. Welcome those new to the community, especially neighbors. Reach out to those who have fallen away giving them encouragement and hope to look again and rekindle the fire of divine love in their hearts and join us at the table of the Lord each Sunday. Go on retreat, seek out the wisdom of a spiritual director, read a good book, read another good book, say "yes" when someone asks you to join a ministry, find a lonely person and share your time, call an old friend you have lost touch with, take a trip to visit someone you love, spend quality time in prayer, pray for vocations, encourage someone to listen to God's call, do a little act of service that no one will notice, offer each day to The Lord and then make it all about Him! These are just a few ideas that you might add to your list of resolutions - be creative! Do it for Jesus, and have a Happy New Year! 9 PRO-LIFE MARCH FOR LIFE IN CHICAGO You are invited to the Chicago March for Life to be held on Sunday, January 15, 2017 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Assemble at Federal Plaza (200 S. Dearborn St., Chicago, 60604), march north to the State of Illinois Building, and then march back to Federal Plaza. The route is about 1.2 miles long. Bolton Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion nationwide for all nine months of pregnancy under any circumstances. Nominated for 14 Academy Awards, Winner of 6 Academy Awards Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln - Best Actor Rating PG 13 As with the great John Ford (Young Mr. Lincoln) before him, it would be out of character for Steven Spielberg to construct a conventional, cradle-to-grave portrait of a historical figure. In drawing from Doris Kearns Goodwin's Team of Rivals, the director instead depicts a career-defining moment in the career of Abraham Lincoln (an uncharacteristically restrained Daniel Day-Lewis). With the Civil War raging, and the death toll rising, the president focuses his energies on passage of the 13th Amendment. Even those sympathetic to the cause question his timing, but Lincoln doesn't see the two issues as separate, and the situation turns personal when his son, Robert (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), chooses to enlist rather than to study law. While still mourning the loss of one son, Mary (Sally Field) can't bear to lose another. Playwright Tony Kushner, who adapted the screenplay, takes a page from the procedural handbook in tracing Lincoln's steps to win over enough representatives to abolish slavery, while simultaneously bringing a larger-than-life leader down to a more manageable size. In his stooped-shoulder slouch and Columbo-like speech, Day- Lewis succeeds so admirably that the more outspoken characters, like congressman Thaddeus Stevens (Tommy Lee Jones) and lobbyist W.N. Bilbo (James Spader), threaten to steal the spotlight whenever they enter the scene, but the levity of their performances provides respite from the complicated strategizing and carnage-strewn battlefields. If Lincoln doesn't thrill like the Kushner-penned Munich, there's never a dull moment--though it would take a second viewing to catch all the political nuances. -- Kathleen C. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Although sacramental needs of patients are administered by the hospital chaplain or by a local priest, in an emergency, St. George clergy will respond to sacramental needs. Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations. Please remember St. George Parish when planning your estate or preparing your will. Wedding arrangements must be made four months in advance of the wedding date.
