2 The Triduum begins, when Lent ends, at sundown on Holy Thursday and ends at sundown on Easter Sunday. The Triduum is more than a reminder of what God did long ago. Instead, it is a continuous celebration of the Church's salvation today. During these three days the whole church fasts and prays with anticipation and hope. Through the symbols of water and the cross, and the liturgical actions of blessing and kissing the foot of the cross, the historical events of Jesus' life, death and Resurrection are made real in the here and now. We look at the Easter Triduum as one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from his resurrection. We do not spend all of the three days in church, but at various times during those days, we are called to church to gather and remember together. When we are not in church, we are asked to keep the spirit of those days even in our homes, if possible. Those days are not days of "business as usual." Chrism Mass Tuesday The Chrism Mass is celebrated each year at Holy Name Cathedral. During the Mass the Bishop will bless the oil of catechumens, used for adult catechumens and infants; the oil of the sick, for anointing the sick; the oil of chrism, used for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests and the consecration of altars. All three are basically an olive oil; chrism spices the air with the scent of a perfume, traditionally balsam symbolizing the fragrance of Christ. Since the bishop is the only minister who may consecrate chrism, this Mass highlights his ministry and our union with him. He will not baptize and confirm everyone in the parishes of the diocese, but he will be symbolically present in the chrism which the priests and deacons will use. These oils will be brought from the cathedral and presented at St. George on Holy Thursday. (Paul Turner, Modern Liturgy, 1997, Resource Publications, Inc.) Liturgy of the Lord s Passion and Veneration of the Cross 3:00 pm Good Friday (Day of Fast & Abstinence) After making a reverence to the altar, the priest prostrates himself and prays as a sign of the grief and sorrow of the Church. Following the Liturgy of the Word, Adoration of the Holy Cross begins as the priest or deacon brings a veiled cross into the sanctuary. After uncovering each part he sings, This is the Wood of the Cross! The people come forward to venerate the cross with a kiss. The Blessed Sacrament is brought out from repose and Holy Communion, consecrated on Holy Thursday, is distributed. We leave the church in silence again. Living Stations of the Cross 7:30 pm We remember the suffering Jesus endured in his Passion and death on the cross. We follow His walk from when he was tried by Pilate until he is laid in the tomb. These will be put together by our teens using contemporary music. Sacrament of Reconciliation Saturdays after the 4:00 pm Mass and Sundays after the 7:30 am and 9:30 am Masses. There is no Reconciliation on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday. Mass of the Lord s Supper Holy Thursday This Mass, celebrated in the evening begins the sacred Easter Triduum in which we are devoted to the remembrance of the Last Supper. This Mass is, first of all, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist. It is also the memorial of the institution of the priesthood. In addition, this Mass is the memorial of that love by which the Lord loved us even to death The Church bells are rung during the singing of the Gloria. Washing of feet, to show the Lord's commandment about fraternal charity, is performed during the homily to show our call to serve one another. A procession is formed for the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the place of reposition. The Blessed Sacrament is then incensed and Eucharistic song is sung. We leave church in silence. The Blessed Sacrament will be in repose in church until midnight for adoration. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil 7:30 pm The Roman Missal reminds us that this mother of all vigils is the greatest and most noble of all solemnities. On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory. We begin with a blazing fire outside the church after the sun sets. A new Pascal (Easter) Candle is lit and brought into the darkened church with a procession of lighted candles. We hear Old Testament readings beginning with the Story of Creation with Psalms sung by the choir. Finally we hear the Alleluia that has been quieted for Lent just before the Gospel is read. The candidates for Baptism come forward to be received into the church. NOTE: Because the Triduum is one Liturgy, there is no Mass on Saturday nor is there an anticipatory Mass in the evening. Rather the Easter Vigil is celebrated after sundown at 7:30 pm. 2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

The crowds came out to greet Jesus as a great prophet. For about three years Jesus has been an itinerant preacher, miracle worker, story teller, activist, outspoken for the poor, crippled and outcasts of society. He has gained quite a reputation and his followers have grown in numbers. In today s language we would say he is at the top of the charts. The crowds come out to greet him as he enters Jerusalem for their high holy days to celebrate Passover with his disciples. Today, as back then, the streets are lined with curious onlookers who want to see Jesus from a distance. Perhaps they will see him work a miracle. They grab palm branches from nearby trees to line the way, similar to today s ticker tape or confetti parades to welcome and honor someone special. The reality that we all know is that those who hail him on his entry to Jerusalem are also the ones who abandon him and some who openly will be part of the crowd mentality to call for his crucifixion. Why would they turn on this popular man, Jesus? Some were swayed by the authorities who wanted to get rid of Jesus, others may have been disappointed that their expectations weren t met, still others may have expected short sweet stories rather than longer parables that hit a nerve. They turn away from Jesus. In many Catholic churches, through our annual October count, we have statistical evidence that tells us only about 22% of those who claim to be Catholic or are registered attend Mass regularly. Today the crowds will come out and at Easter as well. This is good. It is a start to hear the story of Jesus Passion, Death and Resurrection again. It reminds us that one day we too will pass through where Jesus has gone - death. He embraced it to show us the great love that God has for us. This is the power of love - it transforms our lives not by force, but by choice. Love motivates us from within. Love, in a relationship, speaks to our hearts and motivates us to act not because of rules, but because we want to return that gift to the beloved through our actions and words given as a gift. I invite you to enter into that relationship with the Lord and begin again. If there are past hurts, sins, unresolved issues, deal with them - for the love of Christ. That is not a swear statement, but what our faith is all about. We show our love for a God whom we cannot see through our words and actions directed toward those whom He loves - our family of faith. I hope you will join us for our three special liturgies called the TRIDUUM. Even more I hope you will allow the lame of faith to grow in love and express itself by joining us each Sunday. You will encounter the Lord in and through the relationships that develop with and through our ministries and as brothers and sisters in the Lord. I pray this will be a blessed Holy Week for you and your loved ones. Walk with us this last week of Lent. Join us for the journey of a lifetime! I invite you, but the Lord opens the door. Turn the minority - 22% who attend Mass each weekend - into a majority. Vote with your feet. God will do a recount. Can we count on you? Fr. Ken Fleck April 9, 2017 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord 3

4 Divine Mercy Sunday Sunday, April 23 11:30 am Mass followed by Procession and Devotion Join us to celebrate God s mercy and love for us. Divine Mercy Sunday is an official feast of the Catholic Church instituted by Pope John Paul II as a result of messages given to St. Faustina by Our Lord Jesus Christ during the 1930s. Jesus asked that the first Sunday after Easter be declared as a feast for His Divine Mercy and promised to pour out many graces on that day. (Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska) To prepare for this day Our Lord asked St. Faustina that a Novena of chaplets be prayed. He asked that this Novena be prayed beginning on Good Friday. On each day of the Novena, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is offered for a different group of souls. Quoting from her diary, Our Lord said, On each day you will beg My Father, on the strength of My Bitter Passion, for graces for these souls. I have placed pamphlets with the Novena in the back of the Church. Pray it at home with your family and join us on April 23. You have nothing to lose and much to gain! Maria Kavanaugh My daughter, write that the greater the misery of a soul, the greater its right to My Mercy; urge all souls to trust in the unfathomable abyss of My Mercy, because I want to save them all. (Diary 1182) Lenten Reconciliation St. George provides opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation after the 4:00 pm Mass every Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses every Sunday. If these times and days are not convenient for you, please consider one of our neighboring parishes: St. Cyril (tri-parish), 608 Sobiewski St., Lemont Monday, April 10, 5:00-6:00 pm, 7:00-8:00 pm St. Francis of Assisi, S. Wolf Rd., Orland Oark Monday, April 10, 7:30 pm Our Lady of the Woods, W. 131st St., Orland Park Tuesday, April 11, 7:00-9:00 pm Easter Flower Collection There will be a second collection this weekend, April 8/9 for Easter flowers. Thank you for helping us make the church beautiful for the Easter season. We are preparing our Directory. Those who have used our past four Directories have found it to be very helpful both to contact parishioners as well as obtaining important information about the parish staff, pastoral council, parish ministries and their contacts. The four Parish Commissions are listed in the front section, i.e., Worship and Spiritual Life, Service and Outreach, Education and Parish Life. It lists both the contacts and a brief description of each ministry. After the first section of general information, the second part lists all current registered parishioners. If you DO NOT wish to have your name, address or your phone number listed, please call the rectory at (708) or dgeorges@stgeorge60477.org with Parish Directory in the subject box to express your wishes. Only parishioners and staff will receive this Directory through the mail. Looking for volunteers to have their feet washed at our Holy Thursday Mass of the Last Supper. Please call the rectory if you would like to be one of those selected for this honor. Lenten Regulations (from March 1, 2017, Ash Wednesday, to the Paschal Triduum) Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. 4 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

Please remember the annual collection for Maundy Thursday. Once again, the response of the parish for this special collection will benefit the Bonaventure House through the St. George Missionary Group. PROVIDING CARE TO CHRISTIANS IN THE HOLY LAND Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in Catholic Churches to support the work of the Franciscans working in the Holy Land. Christians there rely heavily on the help that comes to them during this special day in the Church and our life of faith. The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America is the home of a world-wide Commissariat of Friars Minor and monasteries who function as bridges between the Holy Land and Christians all over the world. The Commissariat offices here at the Monastery in Washington, D.C. coordinate the vital support for the work of the Franciscans who work in Holy Land. The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility of caring for the Holy Places as well as caring for the Christians living in the Holy Land. It is vital that we care for the Christians living in the Holy Land in order to maintain a Christian presence in a land that is filled with a majority Islamic and Jewish population. 8 Feeling Alone That Man Is You! Will NOT be meeting on Holy Saturday, April 15. Please have a HAPPY EASTER and join us for the final session of our spring semester on Saturday, April 22. Holy Thursday Supper We have a few volunteers to help coordinate our Holy Thursday Pot Luck Dinner after our evening Mass, but we still are in need of more volunteers to help with preparing food, setting up O Connell Hall and helping with cleanup. If you can help, please sign up. Holy Thursday is a few days away. Greenhouse Volunteers Spring has sprung. Fr. Fleck needs volunteers to help get our greenhouses in order. Some of the tasks at hand are, setting up the first greenhouse to accept plants as soon as April 7, volunteers to help transplant plants from seedlings to cups for our May plant sale, those who would water and tend the plants on a daily basis or schedule for watering, setting up the new water tanks to receive rain water for the greenhouse and box gardens. Growing Trends in School Sweet green peppers, a variety of tomatoes, eggplant and radishes - grown by our students in their classrooms and in our garden. We will begin registering children from our parish - school and religious education children - for the garden club. See our Easter bulletin for details. School Registration Our school is growing well. This year enrollment is up 11%. We anticipate a similar increase for next year. Call school to register early (708) St. Julie s has a special prayer service on Holy Thursday night in their little chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration. The service is quite inspirational with music, scripture reading and prayer. At the end of the service, the Blessed Sacrament is removed and the chapel takes on an empty feeling. I left the service and came to our own Holy Family Chapel. The Blessed Sacrament wasn t there, either. (The Blessed Sacrament is removed from Holy Family Chapel before Mass on Holy Thursday, and is put back again after Mass on Holy Saturday.) It gives one kind of an abandoned feeling to look for the Blessed Sacrament and not be able to find Him. Imagine how the apostles felt when they took Jesus away, and they were all alone! We are lucky in that we know that Jesus is always with us spiritually, and that the Blessed Sacrament will be back with us soon. Sometimes seeing the chapel empty gives us a feeling of appreciation of the gift we really have. If you can, come by the chapel when the Blessed Sacrament is not there and experience that empty feeling. Then come back again after He returns and feel His presence, and say Thank You. Then call Bill Beckman at (708) and commit to a scheduled weekly visit. This way you can experience the Lord s physical presence every week and make Him a part of your life. Terry Dorencz Life Moves On Bereavement Ministry St. George Bereavement Ministry will begin a six week series of group support sessions on Tuesday, April 18. We will meet each Tuesday evening from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. The sessions will be held in Meeting Room 1 on the 1 st Floor of the Cahill Parish Life Center. This group can serve as a source of companionship on the journey through loss, so that no one need walk the path of grieving alone. Participants will be guided through discussions of various aspects of the grieving process. There is an opportunity to share stories, express grief, listen to others and interact with people who share similar experiences. If you or someone you know might benefit from peer support after the loss of a loved one, whether you have attended group support sessions or not, join us on April 18. If you wish to attend or if you need additional information, contact Mary Hagan at mhagan@stgeorge60477.org or (708) Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

9 St. George St. Baldrick s Festival St. George had the Luck of the Irish on March 11, 2017, when wonderful people came out for a great cause. We raised over $5, for the St. Baldrick s Foundation. Our small group, with only 15 people from all walks of life, stepped up and went bald for the cause. Even with our small numbers, we raised well beyond our first-time goal of $2,500. St. George LifeTeen would like to thank the volunteers: Angela Kvasnica, Fran Fancsali, Abby Fancsali, Al Fancsali, Sheila Swillum, Namara Swillum, Nicole Douglas, Joey Robson and the many others that helped make this day happen. The day turned out far better than any of us had hoped. Happy Sunday!! April 9, 2017 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord 9

10 Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education! The Catholic Women Sharing Faith are making good use of some very generous donations of yarn that we have recently received, and other gifts from generous donors. We would like to thank all those who are so good to our ministry. Because of your generosity, we are able to share God's love through the beautiful gifts we make - blessed prayer shawls, baby blankets, baby bibs, and our newest craft - wash cloths and dish cloths. We are helping a lovely ministry called I Am Who I Am to kick off their new line of handmade soaps by providing cotton wash cloths to accompany the soaps. I Am Who I Am benefits individuals with Downs Syndrome - from babies to teens, and adults. More information will be available as this new venture gets going. If you would like to donate towards the washcloth project, please share cotton yarn or a donation specified for the washcloth project and we will put your generosity to good use! Thank You, Lord, for your passion and death. Thank You for opening the gates to Heaven for us! Have you noticed someone at Mass who could use a hug? Or perhaps someone in your family, or a neighbor, who may need a reminder of God's precious gift of love? You can reach out in love by offering a blessed prayer shawl - free of charge. Call Pina at (708) ,or Maureen Cetera at (708) As always, we thank our precious donors who allow us to share handmade shawls freely. Thank you! RICE BOWL RETURN WEEKEND The time has come to turn in your Rice Bowls. Please bring them to church on the Weekend of April 22/23. Baskets will be ready for you to deposit your Rice Bowls at the entrances of church. Children can also return their Rice Bowls to school and to their Religious Education classes. Thank you, St. George parishioners, for your generosity. By participating in CRS RICE BOWL, you are participating in global solidarity. You are helping your brothers and sisters both worldwide and in the United States experience a life with hope and dignity. CRS assists needy families to gain the skills and confidence to create a sustainable income so they can provide their children with a home, nourishment, and an education. Global Solidarity Sixth Week of Lent Catholic social teaching inspires and guides how we are to live and work in the world. In this principle, Global Solidarity, Jesus tells us to love our neighbors, even though they may be different than us. That means the neighbors who live next door and also those who live on the other side of the planet. Jesus reminds us that we are all part of God's great family. Encounter Our Neighbors You are born with breadfruit, you grow up with breadfruit and you die with breadfruit. This popular saying from the Micronesian island of Chuuk, thousands of miles off the coast of Hawaii, captures the importance of this starchy fruit. It s a staple both for the Chuukese living in Micronesia, and for people like Micaela, who were forced to migrate to Hawaii due to a changing climate and rising seas. Though Micaela moved to Hawaii seeking a better life, she instead found a community of Chuukese struggling with hunger. Through the One Ohana: Food and Housing for All program, Micaela organizes groups of women to learn farming techniques. Together, they gain the knowledge to plant breadfruit trees and feed their communities. For Micaela, the project is a way to look to the future while remembering the past. It s been many years since I dug my hands in the ground. We are reconnecting back to our home, even though it s not the soil from where we came from, she says. Learn more about the One Ohana: Food and Housing for All program. And what s more, all her children are attending school. When I was a child, there were no education opportunities, she says. Then, with a shy but proud smile, she adds, That s a big difference. 10 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

We know that it is increasingly challenging to live out our Catholic faith, and we value the strength that we receive from the sacramental life of the Church and from our parish community. NFP is 100% free of harmful side effects and does not involve the use of any medications, drugs or devices. Proper use of NFP offers 99% effectiveness in postponing pregnancy as well as in helping couples with normal or marginal fertility achieve a pregnancy. Now you can learn Natural Family Planning without ever having to leave your house. Natural Family Planning classes are available online. All you need is a computer or ipad and speakers. The course features presenters on a live video feed, and you can ask questions through a live chat feature. New virtual classes in English and Spanish begin monthly. Register at Questions? 14 ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends.
