2 CANDLEMAS (Saturday, February 2) According to Jewish law, the first born male child belonged to God, and the parents had to buy him back on the 40th day after his birth, by offering a sacrifice, presenting the child in the temple and offering a pair of turtledoves. On that same day, the mother would be ritually purified. Mary and Joseph kept this law, even though, since she remained a virgin after the birth of Christ, she would not have had to go through ritual purification. Luke recounts the story in his gospel (2:22-39) The celebration of this event became known as the Feast of the Presentation of the Purification of Mary, on February 2. The feast, originated in the fifth century, took on the custom of holding a procession of lighted candles in memory of Simeon s words now known as the Canticle of Simeon: Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace; because my eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples; a light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people of Israel (Luke 2:29-32). The celebration known as Candlemas is a tribute to the light of God s glory that was manifested in Christ Jesus. February 2 places the Candlemas celebration forty days after Christmas and continues the religious cycle that leads up to Easter Sunday. Additionally, it is also the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, which is the basis for various ancient European celebrations that commemorate the annual beginnings of the agricultural season. For the Church it is a time to honor the Lord as the Light of World and to remind us that we too have that light within us. St. George will observe Candlemas on Saturday, February 2 by blessing the candles that will be used the next day for the blessing of throats on the Feast of St. Blaise. Parishioners are invited to bring candles from home to be blessed. We will also have candles available for a donation to take home if you wish. St. George Adult Faith Formation Committee The Blessing of the Throats will take place at all Masses next weekend. Tax Letters St. George is grateful for the generosity of our parishioners. Sacrificial giving enables us to offer a variety of services and programs. Tax letters have been mailed out. If you do not receive a letter this week and need one for income tax purposes, please call the rectory office at (708) Online givers can print a donation statement anytime directly from Give Central by following these steps: Log into your account. On the menu on the left, select Tax Letters. Select the Year Select the location - St. George To print, you can create a PDF file from the tab at the bottom of the donation list. Just use the buttons Control P to print the page. I fought the law and the law won. The Clash sang those words in 1977, but I think they re true for all of us in every age. I don t necessarily mean the civil law, but rather, God s law. How many of us have fought against where God was trying to take us and discovered that, no, God s way is going to win out? How many of us have been happy to commit a particular sin and then, only later, discovered how destructive it really is? I think all of us have been there in our own ways. We have tried to fight God s law, only to have God s law win out. It s almost like God is smarter than me! Oh, wait, yeah All of us have tried to fight God on something, only to discover that God actually does know what he s talking about. So, the question becomes, why do we fight him? Admittedly, each of us can be stubborn in our own ways. But, here s what you and I have to come to recognize. God knows us better than we know ourselves. It s easy to want to have complete autonomy in our lives. We want to be completely free. And make no mistake, freedom isn t a bad thing. We have to have freedom if we re going to be good people. We have to have freedom if we re really going to choose to love God. But, if we want to live a life that gives us fulfillment, we have to choose to follow God s plan. If I eat nothing but cheeseburgers and cheesecake, it would be fun for a couple of hours. Then, I would have weeks of misery. In our first reading today, we hear people rejoicing over receiving God s law. Would we rejoice today over a new set of rules? Our society convinces us that rules are made to be broken. Yet, at the same time, we have more rules, regulations and restrictions than ever. Well, rules are not a bad thing, in and of themselves. We need them in order to function as a society. Heck, we even need them for ourselves, because sometimes we don t always see what is best for us. Does God s law restrict our freedom? Well, of course in some ways, the answer is yes. It means we can t morally go out and rob people blind or commit axe murder, that s true. It means we have to live lives for God and others, rather than our own comfort, that s true. But, we can celebrate God s law because it s a blueprint. It shows us who we are meant to be. It also shows us how to get there, or rather how to allow God to make us into the people that we were always meant to be. God has a plan for you and for me and he wants to bring us to himself. As St. Augustine wrote of his conversion, You were with me, but I was not with you You called, You shouted, and You broke through my deafness. May we have ears to hear God s call and hearts to respond to him. In Christ, Fr. Brendan 2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

9 PERSONAL BENEFIT, COMMON GOOD In its first year the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program, "Invest in Kids", awarded scholarships to more than 3,000 students from low-income families to attend a Catholic school of their choice in Cook and Lake Counties. This was made possible through the generosity of thousands of donors who took advantage of the seventy-five percent state income tax credit on their donation. To help their donations have even more impact in 2019, several donors have agreed to pool their resources and offer a 2-for-1 matching gift program to the more than 160 schools run by the Archdiocese of Chicago, up to $5 million total. HOW IT WORKS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2 AND SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3 This Super Bowl weekend St. George Parish will once again take part in the Souper Bowl of Caring collection after all the Masses. All monies raised are kept here in the parish and used to defer costs for meals which our parish prepares and serves at Daybreak Shelter in Joliet on a monthly basis. This past year, we served over 1,000 meals to men, women and children being housed at the shelter. With your help, we can continue to show God s mercy to those in need. No amount is too great or too small to drop into one of our soup pots to help the cause. Thank you for your generosity! For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, the school will receive two dollars in matching funds. The donations are capped at $100,000 per school. The program will end when all matching funds have been depleted or on February 28, 2019, whichever comes first. After April 1, 2019, any matching gift program funds that are not awarded at a designated school will be reallocated to low-income students at schools with unmet demand. EXAMPLE A donor with about $75,000 in income could make a donation of $5,000 to Empower Illinois, in cash or stock, that would... Eliminate their Illinois state income tax liability (approximately $3,750); and Provide $15,000 in scholarship support (after the $10,000 match) For a total cost of $1,250, this donor has now provided three students with $5,000 in scholarships to use to attend a Catholic school of their choice (donation of $5,000 minus the $3,750 in state credit). 12 St. George Parish Friends, In my heart I am so inspired when I remember those who have gone before us...people like St. Vincent DePaul, Dorothy Day, and Saint Mother Theresa and Jesus Christ Himself. They have provided us with glorious examples of how to live our lives with our families, in our community and the world. We have many opportunities here at St. George to walk in the steps of these great examples. St. George is blessed with wonderful people and wonderful groups that interact with those who are in need such as the Mission Group, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Day Break Team, Prison Ministry, Immigration Minitry, Shawl Ministry, Agape, Ministers of Care, Right to Life, Tinley Park Community Dinners, and there are more. So we are not lacking in opportunities to serve The Lord, our Church, and our brothers and sisters. Call the rectory for contact person information. As you know we haven't been having Acts of Faith meetings this year. After me being the only person who would show up, I figured that meetings were not very inviting for you all. This has not deterred me from doing Peace and Justice work and I hope that you will continue to join me as we bring educational and meaningful activities to share with St. George parishioners and perform meaningful Acts of Faith as a parish. So... I am inviting you to become active and participate in one or more of the activities listed below. We could really use your help. We have begun the task of joining with neighboring parishes, St. Elizabeth Seton and St. Julie, and tentatively two more parishes. We will build a house on St. George property on the weekend of June 7 & 8. There is a job for everyone. We will need 100+ volunteers for just a few hours over the two days. More information will be available in the next month. Watch the bulletin for meeting times, sign ups and activities. Please Come! Cross Roads Missions Help Build Hope program is dedicated to assisting families living in substandard housing. We partner with various groups and affordable housing organizations like Habitat for Humanity and The Fuller Center for Housing to bring together teams of people passionate about eliminating poverty housing. By partnering with Help Build Hope we will build partnerships, build relationships, build community and build homes. 15 Get Meaning to Your Life There once was a man searching for the meaning of life who risked life and limb climbing the highest mountain to see a mystic guru and find the meaning of life, only to find out he climbed the wrong mountain. If you re looking to get meaning to your life, you won t find it on top of a mountain. But, you can find it in a little out-of-the-way chapel behind the Cahill Center. Pope John Paul II said it best: The most beautiful and stirring adventure that can happen to you is the personal meeting with Jesus, who is the only one who gives real meaning to our lives. Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is there in Holy Family Chapel waiting for you to come to Him and get some meaning to your life. The real meaning of life is to establish a meaningful relationship with Our Lord. God created us to love us, and Jesus is the epitome of that love. But, He wants us to love Him, too. Our main goal in life should always be to obtain eternity with Our Lord in heaven. That is success. Anything less than that is failure. The path to that goal is hard and full of pit falls and thorn bushes. Jesus knows that. So He is there in the chapel anxious to give us all the love and graces and help we need to keep going when the going gets tough. Jesus Love is the ointment that heals the wounds that we get from the thorns of life. So go to Our Lord and open up your heart and soul to Him. You just might hear Him say to you in your heart, I ve been waiting for you. Go one step better and call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour every week with Our Lord in The Blessed Sacrament. With regular visits with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament you can build a meaningful relationship with Him that will last for an eternity. That is the real meaning of our life. Anything of this world is just for a time and will be gone before we know it. Terry Dorencz Please Make Your Gift to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me...and share the Word Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus call to Come, Follow Me...and share the Word. In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help here in our Parish. As we contemplate God s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude. Your financial support for the work of our Parish, our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world is one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $55, in paid pledges, all additional funds contributed will be returned to us for use in our Parish. January 27, 2019 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time 15
