1 January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord ST. GEORGE CHURCH 6707 West 175 TH STREET TINLEY PARK, ILLINOIS stgeorge60477.org MISSION STATEMENT We, the faith-filled community of St. George, nourished by God s Word and His Sacraments and renewed by the Holy Spirit, accept the call to continue the mission of Christ by living in, sharing and transforming our world. MASS TIMES 2019 Daily: 7:30 am: Monday thru Friday Saturday: 8:00 am Vigil of Sunday: 4 pm Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am Holy Days: to be announced. Confessions (Reconciliation) After the 4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and after the 7:30 and 9:30 am Masses on Sunday. CATHOLICS COME HOME You Are My Beloved Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. What day is your Baptism anniversary? You should both know this and celebrate this. It is the day you took on a new identity. You may not have realized what it meant, especially if you were a baby. Parents and godparents spoke for you. At Confirmation you spoke for yourself, reaffirming your faith and receiving the third and final sacrament of Initiation. You were then considered an adult in the faith community. What have you done lately? The Scriptures today speak a message of hope. The first reading from the prophet Isaiah gives hope to the Israelites who were in slavery in Babylon. He speaks of the servant of the Lord who will be strong in his faith and love of God and bring that message of hope to those who have fallen away. We have that same challenge set before us. God has chosen us through Baptism to proclaim his Kingdom. It begins at home. Parents: in the baptismal ritual blessing at the end of the ceremony states, You are the first teachers of your child in the ways of faith, may you be the best of teachers by what you say and do. It is another way of saying Actions speak louder than words. Children need to see us pray each day. They need to see we do not have all the answers and that at times we seek and pray for the wisdom of God to make a right decision. Children do not learn this from a book, but from the example we show them. This year you will have an opportunity to share your faith and grow in the love of God through the program called ALPHA. That will start in February. Three programs already invite us into a relationship with God, TMIY (That Man Is You) meets on Saturday mornings, Catholic Women Sharing Faith, and Tuesday evening Bible study. All are welcome. We have all exchanged Christmas gifts with family and friends. Those gifts will be used, appreciated and eventually be consumed or used and gone forever. The gift of our faith, planted as a seed in the heart, does the opposite. It grows, enhances our lives, gets stronger and better with use and lasts forever! Give the gift that keeps on giving. Talk about your faith. Invite family members to rekindle that spark of divine love. If they have questions you can t answer, call the rectory to talk with a priest or deacon. Browse the information brochures at the north exit of church. Take what you need. Google your questions. The best way to learn about your faith is to put it into action. Volunteer. It enriches your life and the lives of others. There are many ministries through which St. George reaches out to our family of faith and to our Tinley Park Community. Home Build, scheduled for the second weekend in June, will give us the opportunity to build a house for a family in need - in one day!! We will do this cooperatively with other parishes in our RENEW group. I hope you will consider joining us when this is formally announced. The Celebration of the Baptism of the Lord is a gateway that leads us to embrace the gifts of the Holy Spirit given at Baptism and Confirmation. Don t leave the gifts unwrapped. Send God a Thank You note by using those gifts each day. Fr. Ken Fleck

A brief reservation form, which will timestamp your application, available January 15, 2019 at 7 pm. 2. The complete application, which requires household documents, available January 18, If you need assistance, call (309) or scholars@empowerillinois.org. PART ONE: RESERVATION On Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at 7:00 pm, applicant families can visit EmpowerIllinois.org to access the reservation form and begin your application. You will be asked to provide your name, phone number, home address, address and all your students names. Please note: the order in which you list your students on the reservation is the order in which your family s scholarships will be awarded. Submitting this form will timestamp your reservation. Your timestamp matters and may impact your chances of receiving a scholarship. Please note: Only one reservation is required per family, even if you are applying for several students. Be sure, however, to list all students you are applying for on your reservation. If you forget a child, you will need to make a separate reservation for that child. After completing your reservation, you will receive instructions by about accessing your student portal. Beginning Friday, January 18, 2019, you can use your student portal to complete part two of the application. You can complete part two whenever you are able, but we encourage you to submit your application before January 28, 2019 to have the best chance at receiving a scholarship. PART TWO: APPLICATION Through your student portal, you can now begin part two of the application process. Part two consists of six steps. Part two may take some time to complete. If you cannot complete it at one time, you can pick up where you left off the next time you log in to the student portal. When you have answered all the questions for each step, remember to click on save and continue. Until your full application has been completed, your portal status will show as Application Incomplete. Remember, you can pick up where you left off, provided you clicked save and continue before exiting the application. You will need to upload required documents. These documents include providing financial information. PERSONAL BENEFIT, COMMON GOOD In its first year the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program, "Invest in Kids", awarded scholarships to more than 3,000 students from low-income families to attend a Catholic school of their choice in Cook and Lake Counties. This was made possible through the generosity of thousands of donors who took advantage of the seventy-five percent state income tax credit on their donation. To help their donations have even more impact in 2019, several donors have agreed to pool their resources and offer a 2-for-1 matching gift program to the more than 160 schools run by the Archdiocese of Chicago, up to $5 million total. HOW IT WORKS For every dollar designated to a qualifying school through Empower Illinois between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019, the school will receive two dollars in matching funds. The donations are capped at $100,000 per school. The program will end when all matching funds have been depleted or on February 28, 2019, whichever comes first. After April 1, 2019, any matching gift program funds that are not awarded at a designated school will be reallocated to low-income students at schools with unmet demand. EXAMPLE A donor with about $75,000 in income could make a donation of $5,000 to Empower Illinois, in cash or stock, that would... Eliminate their Illinois state income tax liability (approximately $3,750); and Provide $15,000 in scholarship support (after the $10,000 match) For a total cost of $1,250, this donor has now provided three students with $5,000 in scholarships to use to attend a Catholic school of their choice (donation of $5,000 minus the $3,750 in state credit). 10 Our Friend I have a friend. He s your friend, too. Our friend is very lonely. He wants you to come and spend some time with Him. He says that He knew you before you were born. He loved you then, and He loves you even more now. He says that He has so much to give you: love, compassion, strength of character, persistence, grace. Yes, even grace. All He wants is for you to come and spend some time with Him and these gifts and more are yours for the asking. He says that He can make your day, your week, your life better and easier to deal with. He s there in Holy Family Chapel waiting for you with open arms, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, longing to see your face. He gets so disappointed and sad when you don t come to see Him. He is Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, the greatest power in the universe, waiting for you, not your neighbor, but you to care enough to come and spend time with Him and to be friends. You can go one step better. Call Bill Beckman at (708) and sign up to spend an hour every week with our friend, the Blessed Sacrament. The time you spend with Our Lord is never forgotten. And some day, when you have to give an accounting of your life, your friend may just walk by and tell His Father, This is My friend! I CAN ONLY IMAGINE Sunday, January 20, 2019 After 11:30 mass in the Parish Life Center Meeting Rooms 1 & 2 Enjoy a Sloppy Joe lunch! Bring a snack or dessert to share. or don t bring anything! FREE! Growing up in Greenville, Texas, Bart Millard suffers physical and emotional abuse at the hands of his father, Arthur. When Arthur becomes terminally ill, he finds redemption by embracing his faith and rediscovering his love for his son. Years later, Bart's troubled childhood and mended relationship with his dad inspires him to write the hit song " I Can Only Imagine" as singer of the Christian band, Mercy Me. Both beautiful and emotionally powerul. USA Today A gripping reminder of the power of forgiveness, 'I Can Only Imagine' beautifully illustrates that no one is ever too far from God s love or from an eternal home in Heaven. 12 PRO-LIFE MEMORIAL FOR VICTIMS OF ABORTION VIGIL AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN FLOSSMOOR January 22, 2019 is the 46th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion nationwide for all nine months of pregnancy under any circumstances. During these 46 years over 61 million babies have died when their mothers were victimized by the lie that abortion will solve their "problem". We pray for an end to this American holocaust. If you (or a person you know) needs to talk to someone to seek reconciliation and healing from an abortion, people are available who are ready to help. Please call Project Rachel at (888) 456-HOPE (4673) or Post-Abortion Hotline at (800) 5-WE-CARE. Do you know the #1 killer in our nation? It's not cancer or heart disease. Sadly, it is abortion, often with others pressuring mothers to make this deadly choice. St. George Pro-Life sponsors this weekend s memorial at Mass for the babies lost to abortion and in recognition of the serious impact of abortion on the mothers and their families. Please plan to join the monthly vigil to be held at the Flossmoor Planned Parenthood abortion facility. We will gather along the public right-of-way extending from S. Governor s Hwy in Flossmoor. This vigil will take place from 10:00 am - 11:00 am on Friday, January 18, Public parking is available 1/2 block north of the Planned Parenthood site on 198th St. which goes west from Governors Hwy. Express your prayers and concerns about an abortion facility located in our own neighborhood. BREMEN-ORLAND FAMILIES FOR LIFE You are invited to the monthly meeting of Bremen-Orland Families for Life on Monday, January 14 at 1:00 pm. It will be held at the Brementowne Manor located at Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park. We will plan for future activities and discuss current Pro-Life events and issues. For reservations or additional information, please phone (773) or visit the website at Attention Parishioners!! Would you like an easy way to help support St. George School? Please consider paying for everyday purchases with gift cards purchased from PART. For example, you pay $25 and receive a $25 gift certificate for Jewel. For every certificate sold, St. George School earns money. You say you want to help Youth Ministry, Religious Education, St. Vincent depaul, etc? Just tell us where you want your credit to go. For a complete list of stores, please stop by the PART table before or after all the Saturday and Sunday Masses. Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. For many in Latin America and the Caribbean, a rising secular culture, difficult rural terrain and a shortage of ministers present obstacles to practicing the faith. Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation and other programs to share our faith with those who long to hear the Good News of Christ. To learn more about how you can make a difference, please visit Did you know you can pay your Kohl s bill with PART gift cards? What an easy way to help the school and pay a bill you d be paying anyway! Gift cards are available for purchase every week in the Bride s Room before and after all the Sunday Masses and at the rectory office Monday through Friday from 8:30 am - 11:30 am and 1:30 pm 3:30 pm, on Thursday evenings from 4:00-7:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 1:00-4:00 pm. 12 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church Tinley Park, IL 60477

13 Active Parishioner Status We receive many requests for parishioners to be godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at St. George. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an active member of St. George. Because of the nature of our congregation, having so many visitors, it is difficult to know everyone. An active member of St. George Catholic Church: Is properly registered and supporting the Church. Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Participates in parish activities when possible. Uses the parish envelope system for donations. Adult children living at home are required to register separately from their parents as parishioners. While assessments of an inquirer s status will be made individually, the above are the main factors what will be considered in making that determination. Registration will take place next Sunday, January 20, 2019, after the 9:30 am Mass in the Parish Life Center, Meeting Rm. 1. Thank You Many Thanks to: The Sacristans and Art and Environment volunteers who decorated the church for Advent and Christmas. It looks beautiful!! To the choirs, your hours of practice allowed us to hear a moment of heavenly music. To the ministers of communion, lectors, ushers and servers whose dedicated commitment welcomes all and helps our liturgies to express the joy of this holy season. Thanks to our dedicated staff. May the Lord continue to allow us to be a source of blessing and guidance to our family of faith throughout January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord 13

14 ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Although sacramental needs of patients are administered by the hospital chaplain or by a local priest, in an emergency, St. George clergy will respond to sacramental needs. Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church. Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish s ministries and organizations. Please remember St. George Parish when planning your estate or preparing your will. Wedding arrangements must be made four months in advance of the wedding date. You must be a registered parishioner for six months prior to making arrangements. Please schedule your church date before reserving your hall. Bulletin information provides updates on parish and Archdiocesan events. Please submit articles or recommendations to bulletin@stgeorge60477.org by Monday noon before publication date. Because of space limitations, articles will be limited to St. George activities and information, as well as Archdiocesan events and news. All articles are subject to editing and will be published at the discretion of the Pastor. No guarantees can be made as to size or placement of the articles. PARISH STAFF Pastor..Rev.
