3 December 16, Page 3 REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD Third Sunday of Advent The prophetic writings we hear in today s scriptures call us to rejoice and celebrate the goodness of God. Zephaniah, Isaiah, Saint Paul, and John the Baptist in Luke s Gospel all follow the rich tradition of the Biblical prophets, a tradition that reaches full expression in Jesus. The prophets warn that human failings have truly disastrous consequences. All are summoned to repent, and to change their lives. Today we hear the Good News that God s gracious love exceeds and overcomes all human corruption. God has not given up on us. Indeed, God keeps pursuing us, and eagerly seeks to reconcile with us. God s initiative to set the world aright culminates with Jesus, whose coming John the Baptist announces. John s prophetic message summons us to join in God s reconciling work, by living generously and justly in our daily lives. As we rejoice in God s grace, we then extend this grace to all. GOD S JOY, OUR JOY Zephaniah s description of God in today s first reading is quite striking. It is remarkable that after most of the book of Zephaniah paints a dark picture of God s judgment on the Day of the Lord, we see God singing with joy, partying and celebrating, bursting with love for the Chosen People. Such is God s delight in us human beings. In the scriptures, there seem to be two kinds of moments when God is especially delighted. First, during creation, when God creates something beautiful: not only the whole universe, but also individual human persons, made in God s image. Second, after times of separation, when God celebrates the restoration of intimacy with God s beloved. As Paul writes to the Church in Philippi, those on the path of faith might somehow get swept up in God s joy. Because in Christ and through the Holy Spirit, God continually speaks and listens to those in united in faith. We participate in God s delight in creation when we are creative ourselves, when we add to the world s beauty. We also participate when we join in the work of reconciliation and act to heal human divisions and restore relationships. BEGIN WHERE YOU ARE In today s Gospel, those who listened to John the Baptist s prophetic preaching were quite troubled, and moved to ask What should we do? Although John had given dire warnings about what might happen if they did not sincerely repent, he did not suggest drastic actions. He recommended that people begin where they are, and work within their daily circumstances. Share generously. Treat people fairly. Be content with what you have. These were perhaps small steps turning them, in God s time, toward deeper change. A first step for us might be to learn, however slowly, to listen to God speaking within the context of our lives. We can respond with small concrete actions and perhaps learn what God wishes to say through them. We can then listen anew for the next step. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 4 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, December 16, Page 4 St. Barbara s Parish News A Christmas Message from our priests Advent, originally from the Latin Adventus, means coming. This four-week season begins with the first Sunday that falls on or closest to November 30th, and ends with our celebration of Christmas. This season of joyful preparation and anticipation has a two-fold meaning. First, it helps us to prepare ourselves spiritually for the commemoration of the birth of Christ, celebrated during the Christmas season. Secondly, it invites us to look forward to Christ s Triumphal Second Coming at the end of time. Therefore, all our spiritual work during this Advent Season is about renewing the bonds that bind us to one another and to the Lord. We also reach out with open hearts to build up our relationships with one another and with our God. We wish you joy, peace, and love this Christmas season; and a blessed, happy New Year. Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, Adviento viene del latín "Adventus" y significa "Venir". Esta temporada tiene cuatro semanas, la cual inicia con el primer domingo que está más cerca del 30 de noviembre y termina con nuestra celebración de Navidad. Esta temporada tiene una preparación de gran alegría y tiene dos caracteres importantes: Primero, nos ayuda a prepararnos espiritualmente para la conmemoración del nacimiento de Cristo durante la temporada navideña. Segundo, también nos ayuda a esperar la segunda venida triunfal de Cristo al final de los tiempos. Por tanto, nuestra tarea de esta temporada de Adviento es de renovar los lazos que nos unen al prójimo y al Señor Jesús. Y con corazones abiertos y dispuestos edifiquemos una buena relación con los demás y con el Señor. En mi oración le pido a Dios que les conceda alegría, paz y amor en esta temporada navideña, y un bendito y feliz año nuevo. CHUÙC MÖØNG THAØNH HOÂN 16 Tháng Mười Hai Chân Phước Philip Siphong và Các Bạn (c. 1940) Trong nhiều thế kỷ, các nhà truyền giáo ở Xiêm (bây giờ là Thái Lan) không những được nhân nhượng nhưng còn được tiếp đón niềm nở bởi quốc gia đa số theo Phật Giáo. Các quốc gia khác ở vùng Viễn Ðông không được như vậy, và nhiều nhà truyền giáo đã chịu tử đạo. Tuy nhiên, vào giữa thập niên 1930, sự ổn định chính trị từ xưa ở Xiêm bắt đầu mất dần. Ảnh hưởng Âu Châu đang trên đà suy thoái, và sự đe dọa xâm lăng của người Nhật đã đưa đẩy nước Xiêm đến một thái độ thiếu thân thiện đối với các thế lực Tây Phương. Vài vụ bạo động đã xảy ra cho người ngoại quốc, kể cả các Kitô Hữu. Nhiều nhà truyền giáo bị tù đầy. Tài sản của Giáo Hội bị tịch thu. Những người Thái Lan tòng giáo bị ép buộc phải công khai bỏ đạo. Ông được bảo rằng phải lên trung tâm cảnh sát để làm đơn khiếu nại, trên đường đi ông đã bị mai phục vào ngày 16 tháng Mười Hai. Sau này, được biết ông đã bị tra tấn trước khi bị bắn chết. Trong khi đó, các sơ Agnes Phila và Lucia Khambang tiếp tục giảng dạy trong trung tâm truyền giáo. Hai sơ nói với các em rằng ông Philip là vị tử đạo, điều này khiến các viên chức địa phương đã ra lệnh ngăn cấm hai sơ không được dạy giáo lý và phải mặc y phục bình thường của người Thái. Aunque Juan ya había advertido acerca de lo que podría pasar si no se arrepentían sinceramente, él no sugirió acciones drásticas. Él recomendó que las personas empezaran donde estaban, y trabajaran dentro de sus circunstancias diarias. Compartir generosamente. Tratar a las personas justamente. Contentarse con lo que se tiene. Estos fueron quizá pequeños pasos que los convirtieron, en el tiempo de Dios, hacia un cambio más profundo. Un primer paso para nosotros podría ser aprender, aunque sea lentamente, a escuchar que Dios nos habla en aquello que ocurre en nuestras vidas.
