Schmid Church Secretary Debbie Baldwin Director of Grow in Peace Child Care Center Carla Hamilton Organist: Sylvia Ratcliffe Office Hours: Tuesday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. I got the text from Keith Kirchhoff, they approved the ministry description with only minor changes. I felt at first joy and relief, that the body of Peace was indeed one in Spirit and purpose and that this important part of the calling process had been finished. Then my focus turned to the kind of Pastor that would have to come in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the ministry description. The only word that came to mind was perfect. To be traditional yet flexible, to be a great shepherd and a great evangelist, to work with all groups and be a leader of all ages. While these are valid biblical requirements of the Shepherd, all must remember that pastors are no different than anyone else; they make poor decisions; they sin. Your next pastor will not be perfect. He will fail. He will sin against you and the Lord. But what brings pastors and laity together is what they share besides a sinful nature, faith in the blood and name of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the head shepherd of the flock and the under shepherds. He is the one who forgives and forgets. He is the one who enables us to bear the fruits of repentance and redemption so we can forgive and forget the sins of others, including those of pastors and each other. Let us prepare for the arrival of God s chosen by getting things as perfect as we can before his arrival. Individuals and boards looking at the challenges of Peace and trying to address them with solutions that can be in place when he comes. Let us seek out the brother or sister that we don t have a good relationship with and work things out. Let us get the physical plant in top shape. Let us fill our boards with eager disciples, so that the new Pastor does not inherit the baggage of the past and can go to work immediately on what the Lord would have him to do and Peace needs him to do. It can and will be done, for we can do all things through Him who strengthen us. In the name of the only perfect one, Jesus the Christ, and to the blessing of the faithful of Peace Lutheran. Amen. In Christ Pastor Zerkel
2 Christian Education & Worship Birthdays, Baptismal birthdays, Anniversaries, & Official Acts Chili/Soup Get Together It s Time It s time for The Lutheran Witness Subscriptions to be renewed. January Baptisms The 3 F s: Food, Fellowship and Fund Raiser: First things first Mark your calendar for 12:30 January 18 th when the LWML has its annual Chili/Soup Get Together. Hopefully, all have heard of Mother s Refuge opening its doors again in December after a devastating fire two years ago. We are pleased to have its director, Robert Zorn, speak to us about the efforts to once again have this home meeting the needs of young mothers and their babies. After gathering together on Sunday morning, December 21 in the church basement, we know what a good feeling is generated around tables as we worship our Lord in different surroundings. Let s duplicate that aura once again as we learn about this vital ministry and break bread with fellow Christians. For planning purposes, we ask that you sign up in the atrium. There will be an added interest that afternoon as our sewing ladies present their sewing gifts of love for use at the home. 5 Miscellaneous Organizations MISSION WORK! Of course every Christian is for Mission Work. After all, isn t that what the Great Commission is all about Go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations So what is Peace doing about mission work throughout the world and right here in the USA? You might be a bit surprised at the answer because it has to do with something that has been on a pedestal at the back of the church the last Sunday of every month for as long as you can remember. Oh, that s right. You probably go right by it without giving it a thought because after all, it doesn t concern you. A purple and white box only concerns that small group of ladies who wear purple one Sunday in October and seem to have bake sales and ask for food donations and who knows what else all year long. The box is marked Mite Box and Mite Box Sunday is marked on the church calendar each month, but really, it s of no concern to most of the congregation, especially the men. Right?? Wrong!! Mite box is the gathering of coins and bills for mission work for ALL WORSHIPPERS at Peace. (Remember the widow that Jesus pointed out as giving her all when she put her mites in the box outside the temple?) Please read about what the $100,000 pledged for just one of 18 projects is going to do to ease suffering and proclaim the Gospel in Haiti (on page 9). Then won t you bring a dollar or two the last Sunday in January to help with this Mission Work? Read next month about the $40,000 pledged to support Lutheran Public Radio. Book Club The Family of Jesus offers a fictional view of six of the family members of Jesus, all anchored in Scriptural truth, creating a lifechanging and unprecedented emotional connection to the Bible. The characters in these short stories were among those closest to Jesus: Mary, Joseph, James (brother of Jesus), John the Baptist, Zechariah, and Elizabeth. Each has a compelling tale to tell. Karen intersperses fictional, emotionally gripping details anchored in Scripture with historical and theological insights and questions that will guide soul-searching and reflection. The next Book Club will meet on Wednesday, January 28 at 9:30 in the Social Room. Could use your help!! If you regularly place articles or any form of information in the newsletter please call or your address or phone number to sheiladalen6@gmail.com or I would like to update my records and this will give me the opportunity to get back in the habit of sending everyone a reminder each month.
