3 LOVE Paul wrote one of the greatest chapters on love in his letter to the people of Corinth. 1 Corinthians 13 is commonly used as a text in weddings, but it also explains the importance of love in all relationships that we have with our family, friends, and neighbors. Paul uses eloquent writing to demonstrate that if our actions are done without love, they are useless. Paul writes, If I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:2) Wow! Those are strong words. Without love, I am nothing. At the end of this chapter Paul lifts up love as the greatest when he writes, So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13) I wrestled with this for many years because I thought faith would have been considered the greatest. For without faith, no one can be saved! But I learned over the course of time that while we need faith now, eventually there will not be a need for faith. It will disappear. The author of Hebrews says, Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) But once we get to heaven we will see the Lord with our own eyes, as Job so faithfully declared many years ago. Our faith will no longer be necessary in heaven and will disappear. Hope will also go away once we reach our heavenly bliss. Who hopes for what he already has? The final item of Paul s list that remains is love. This is why Paul lifts up love as the greatest, because, Love never ends. (1 Corinthians 13:8) And Paul says that without it, we are nothing! Love is more than just a matter of the heart. It is something that comes from the Lord and resonates deep within our soul that is made in His image. Love wells up and causes us to take action to help our neighbor. The Lord demonstrated this for us because, God is love. (1 John 4:8) And it was His love for us that brought about the action of sending His only Son, Jesus the Christ, to come and be our Savior. It was the love of God that carried Jesus to the cross where He paid the price for all of us, so that we could be brought to our heavenly home. It is in His heavenly kingdom, where we will continue to experience His love that never ends, and we will return to Him and others this same love forever. We shouldn t be waiting to express love for our neighbors until we get to heaven. God has commanded us to love right now. Each of us is to love the Lord and our neighbor on earth. As discussed last month, one of the ways we can do this is by providing a meal for our neighbor. There are also many other ways that we can love our neighbors. God has given you the freedom to decide how you love your neighbors. We must be sure to use this freedom not to indulge in ourselves, but to look to their needs. And when our times is up on this earth we will hear the words of our master, Well done, good and faithful servant. (Matthew 25:21) In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf 3

We will be exploring what the Bible has to say about learning and knowledge and its role in our lives. This Bible Study is authored by Alison Witte, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Communication at Trine University in Angola, Indiana. Busy Hands Mothers and Newborn Babies When the project of assembling kits for newborns was presented to the LWML, the ladies got busy using their hands to make, knit and gather the needed items. What is in your hand? Moses was asked by God. It was only a rod, but when used as God directed, miracles happened. Our ladies assembled 25 kits for institutions to give to the mothers and newborn babies. Little miracles, God s blessings. Baskets, Baskets Who s got the baskets? Baskets are needed and will be collected for Easter Basket Creations at Beautiful Savior Home by March 15. Please place the baskets in a specially marked box in the hallway. 6 A Day of Prayer A Day of Prayer: The first Day of Prayer Service was offered to societies through the LWML Office in the 1959 Quarterly. It was suggested also that the Day of Prayer be held on the Tuesday following the first Sunday in Lent or any other day of the week. Although Peace LWML has not had a prayer service for several years, the LWML offers one on its website, for any LWML to use. The prayer service authored by the President of Iowa District West, Dr. Steve Turner, celebrates 75 years of commending Christ from one generation to another. (One generation shall commend your works to another and shall declare your mighty acts. Psalm 145.) Perhaps you would like to incorporate it into your own private devotion time. If you think Peace should bring back this Day of Prayer, please mention it to Kathleen Jarvis or an LWML member to bring up at the next league meeting. We welcome your input. You are God s gift to the world. Do all you can do to make it a better place. 8 Book Club Rosemary The Hidden Kennedy Daughter By Kate Clifford Larson Joe and Rose Kennedy s strikingly beautiful daughter, Rosemary, attended exclusive schools, was presented as a debutant to the queen of England, and traveled the world with her high-spirited sisters. Yet Rosemary was intellectually disabled, a sacred fiercely guarded by her powerful and glamorous family. Major new sources Rose Kennedy s diaries and correspondence, letters from Rosemary s teachers and doctors, and exclusive family interviews bring Rosemary alive as a girl adored but left far behind by her competitive siblings. Kate Larson reveals both the sensitive care Rose and Joe gave to Rosemary and then as the family s standing reached an apex the often desperate and duplicitous arrangements the Kennedys made to keep her away from home as she became increasingly difficult in her early twenties. Finally, Larson illuminates Joe s decision to have Rosemary lobotomized at age twenty-three and the family s complicity in keeping the secret Rosemary delivers a profoundly moving coda: JFK visited Rosemary for the first time while campaigning in the Midwest; she had been living isolated in a Wisconsin institution for ten years. Only then did the siblings understand what had happened to Rosemary and bring her home for loving family visits. It was a reckoning that inspired them to direct attention to the plight of the disabled, transforming the lives of millions. CONGREGATIONAL CHRISTMAS CARD Thanks to all who signed the large card in the entrway and made a donation. The $41.00 contributed was given to Beautiful Savior Home in Belton New on the Spinner Coming new to the spinner right when Timothy Lutheran is offering a series on grief is the new pamphlet Grief: Where Sadness and Hope Meet. The grief we experience over profound loss in this world, particularly the death of a loved one, is an emotional journey different for each of us. There are no hard and fast rules for getting through such an ordeal; as individuals we ride it out to the best of our ability. While some are emotional basket cases, erupting in tears for long periods of time, others face this trauma with a type of stoicism or hard-edged exterior. Regardless of the person s reaction, however, God is there in the middle of it, ever available to comfort and bring us through out suffering and tears. And that s the point of this booklet: our grief, while it can be intense and debilitating, is not a thing that can t be managed and eventually overcome. That is, of course, where God comes in. Though life has dealt us a terrible blow, we know His grace is sufficient, healing even the heartache of our loved one s absence in this world. Along with this pamphlet, The Purpose of Living, The Purpose of Dying has also been placed on the spinner in the entryway. This first-hand account chronicles the life of Ron Casteel from the day he is diagnosed with AIDS. His story is a powerful and moving discovery process of God s purpose for our lives. As Casteel comes to terms with his shortened life, he applies Christ s saving mercy with other AIDS patients. His story is both a powerful witness and a practical guide for living. As he discovers, the purpose for living and the purpose for dying are the same to honor Christ. 9

For questions and to register, call the Care Ministry office at Beautiful Savior Home, Belton, Missouri News Are you aware that Beautiful Savior Home and Manor in Belton, Missouri had its beginnings in 1972? It is a 126-bed skilled senior care center and a 50-bed assisted living center with a wide range of services that provide area seniors a comfortable and rewarding life. Just recently, the LWML at Peace sponsored a bake sale and raised over $900 to use for resident Christmas gifts. Thank you, Peace for your generosity in supporting this endeavor. The LWML also collected unused items that the residents could choose as personal gifts to give to their own loved ones. Two of our own members, Al Kuegele and Marcella Ellison, reside in the Manor at Beautiful Savior. Peace members have greeted them while assisting with Chapel duty in January. Recently, the Board of Directors at Beautiful Savior did not renew the management agreement with the Tutera Group Company. Instead, it entered into a consulting agreement with the Grace Team, which is a group of Christians that have many years of experience in providing services to senior community ministries such as Beautiful Savior. Peace s own member, Peggy Noah, serves as the President of the Beautiful Savior Auxiliary and is on the Board of Directors. Peace members faithfully attending auxiliary activities are Wilma Seutter and Punky McDaniel. The Peace LWML is a staunch supporter of this group with yearly dues, chapel duty service, Christmas cookies for December, support at Easter and Halloween and other activities. The big news is that Pastor Rolf is a new member of the Board of Directors of Beautiful Savior!! Congratulations, Pastor. We support you in this new worthwhile endeavor! 10

12 It s Still There! Try it Out! The Independence Examiner newspaper recently ran a lengthy article about a member who attends Ascension Lutheran Church: 82-year-old Don Bartels. He makes a daily weekday trip in the early hours to open up Ascension s Family Life Center so walkers can start their daily walk. Now in its 12 th year, Ascension saw the opportunity to reach out to the community when the Blue Ridge Mall closed and walkers were without a place to walk. Another regular at the Family Life Center is 90-year-old Rachel Brown (our own member Bob Brown s mother) who volunteers to prepare coffee when it s her time to serve as hostess. Why not check out this free avenue for meeting new friends, sharing a cup of coffee and getting that needed exercise. The gym is open for walking from 7 to 10 am. Need more information?
