3 The Month of Love When I was doing a little research I ran across some information that touted February as the month of love. Since Valentine s Day falls in the middle of the month I guess it only seems natural to think of February as the month when we think about, consider, and talk about love. The only problem is, what exactly does love mean? If you look up the word love in the dictionary it has many meanings, not only from using the word as a noun, but it also has many different meanings when using it as a verb. These many and various meanings have made the word ambiguous and it usually requires a context for us to understand exactly how the word is being used. While we may have many different meanings and understandings for the word love, Scripture has only one. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8) Our God is love! To be clear, when the word love is used in Scripture, it is used as a verb. The word love denotes action, much like the name of our God, Yahweh is a verb and denotes action. So when the above passage is used, it denotes that our God is a God of action. In actionable love, our God comes to us and becomes one of us. He lives among us and suffers with us, because He loves us. And greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13) Our God who is love took the actions necessary to save us, by giving up His life and dying on a cross. And in the very next verse Jesus tells us, You are my friends if you do what I command you. (John 15:14). What Jesus commands is this, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-38). Our God has called us to love Him and love our neighbor. Our neighbor is our spouse, our children, our families, and all those that we come into contact with. Since we know that love denotes action, just saying to our spouse, children, or others that we love them isn t enough. God commands the action of love. This means we need to show them. Saying I love you is a great place to start, but let s not forget to show others through our actions how much we really do love them. For, if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. (1 John 4:12) In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf 3

Book Club From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure s converge. Doerr s Stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer whose sentences never fail to thrill (Los Angeles Times). The Book Club meets the 4 th Wednesday of every month (February 24 th ) in the Social Room at 9:30 am. We read a new book every month and enjoy an in-depth discussions about each book. Anyone that enjoys reading and having wonderful discussions is welcome to join us. 7

8 What s New on the Spinner? Spin Till You Find It! Need consolation Need advice Need encouragement It s hoped that you know where the Lutheran Hour Ministries Spinner is in the entryway. It is filled with booklets that are there for you to take and share. Here is synopsis of two new ones: So You Prayed for a Miracle Do modern-day miracles really happen? Have you seen them in other s lives, but never felt they occurred in yours? The marvelous healing done by Jesus was widely described while He was on the earth. But what about today? What constitutes a healing miracle now? Why would some people experience an amazing healing and others would not? In this booklet you ll discover why Jesus performed miracles of healing. Today, many people wonder why miracles don t happen when, seemingly, they have taken all the appropriate steps to ask for healing. While the healing done by Jesus was visible in His day, the most important act He performed was securing eternal life for all who believe! Raising Your Children with Respect Raising a family is hard work, especially in today s world. Many external forces reach into our homes and influence our families, but studies still show that children look to their parents for guidance in the major areas of their lives. This booklet offers helpful tips for building a rewarding relationship with your children. You ll find suggestion for opening up communications, stimulating creativity, setting the right example, and raising your children with respect. Why are some people standing on the last verse of a hymn? Well that is a little startling, isn t it! One can be singing the sermon hymn or another hymn during the service, and all of a sudden, a few people are standing. Look closely at the verse you re singing in the hymnbook. It has a small triangle at the beginning of that particular verse alerting the congregation a line naming each person of the Trinity is being sung. Traditionally, many hymns ended with this type of verse. To show honor and praise to the Godhead, the congregation stood. Many church members still do. Do you know an easy way to find the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed? Turn to the inside back cover of the hymnbook. Presto! The creeds are easily at your fingertips! 8

9 Excerpts from the January Lutheran Witness Many years ago I began to note that the elderly saints whose funerals I was conducting had confirmation verses that remarkably reflected their lives. It was uncanny. I used to think that those old pastors really had profound insight into the lives of these dear saints when they were young. I still think that s so, but there s more. I think that the Word of God in a confirmation verse actually has the power to shape a life and so often does. Such is the power of God s Word, especially the words of the very Gospel. p. 1 Pastor Matthew C. Harrison, Synod President {What s your confirmation verse? Do you agree with President Harrison?} It flies, it marches on, it is fleeting, and in some circumstances it seems to stand still. It is time. However we speak of it, time regulates our lives in this world. We cannot control time; we can only measure it and mark its passing while knowing that time is running out. Time is precious because it is limited. We will all experience a final moment in which time will cease for us. So we count time in ways that are meaningful to us and that help us make the best use of it The Church Year moves our focus off what we must do by certain dates or what we have done (good or bad) on certain anniversaries to what Christ has done and continues to do for us. p. 7 The Rev. Mark Wood. The world promises transformation of our bodies and lives, but it cannot deliver the hope we need. God delivers our true hope through the forgiveness of our sins poured out upon us, richly through His Word. On the last day, our hope is fully realized as we fully receive Christ s victory over sin, death and the devil. In the end, we are all tombs some of us newly whitewashed, others looking much worse, all in need of true hope. p. 9 The Rev. Jeremy Swem 5 Resolutions Every Lutheran Should Keep 1. Remember your Baptism 2. Go to church regularly and receive Christ s body and blood 3. Support your pastor and the work of your congregation 4. Encourage the families of your church 5. Make a bold confession p.p. 14&15 The Rev. Michael Meyer 9
