1 The Living Light TLC TALLMADGE LUTHERAN CHURCH JANUARY 2019 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER DIFFERENT We live in a society today that wants us to conform: Conform to what they want and the way they want to live, but I want you to know today that as followers of Jesus, we are called to be DIFFERENT. We are not called to fit in but rather to be DIFFERENT, to stand out. The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome and tells them: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. This is a challenging verse in the scriptures for us as Christians because, if we are honest, in some ways it is hard to distinguish Christians from those who don t follow Jesus. It is hard for disciples of Christ to separate ourselves from the world sometimes. This was a common problem 2,000 years and it is common problem today. In This Issue Message from the Pastor (p 1-2) Announcements (p 2-4) Children & Family Ministry (p 6) Youth Group Corner (p 7) Ministry Spotlight (p 7) Music Ministry (p 8) Preschool/King s Kids News (p 9) TLC Building Projects (p 10) Monthly Calendar (p 11) What Paul is teaching simply means we can t fit in with the rest of the world and expect that we will be able to discern the will of God. We are called to be DIFFERENT. We can t go out and do the things that the rest of the world does, especially those thing that go against the will of God. You cannot do the worldly things and expect to understand the will of God in your life. Instead we are to be transformed by the renewal of our mind. Transformed means to change one s life and habits to something else. We are changed and transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ and that takes work. It has to be daily work, so that we can discern the will of God in our lives and be DIFFERENT in Christ.

2 When Jesus, the King of Kings was born, He did not conform to the world standards. The world would have placed the king on a pedestal, in a castle, with the best amenities that where available during that time, A worldly king would have servants to wait on him hand and foot, for every wish and desire would be given. But not Jesus. Instead Jesus stood out by being born in a stable, becoming a refuge, growing up in a small town. Instead of servants waiting on the king, The King was a servant and waited others, the King washed the feet of others. The King touched the heart and souls of the afflicted. As the King of Kings, He reached out to the poor and the needy. His love and grace came not just for the Jews but, also gentiles, for the rich and the poor. No king would sacrifice Himself for His people. No King except King Jesus. This King of Kings, this Savior, this Messiah, did not fit it, He stood out. He was DIFFERENT. And we are called not to fit into the world but to stand out, to stand out for Jesus. We are called not conform to the worldly ways of life, but to stand out from them. To be DIFFERENT in Christ. As we begin a New Year, we will explore this idea together on Sunday mornings during worship how we are called to be DIFFERENT as followers of Jesus. Blessings on this New Year as you GROW, CARE, and SHARE as disciples of Jesus! 5 Wise Owls Thank you to the Wise Owls who took time out of their Christmas party to wrap gifts for our Preschool and King s Kids! 9 The Music Ministry presented Shout the Good News! by Lloyd Larson for our annual Christmas Cantata services on December 16, This original music was performed by our TLC Chancel Choir and Orchestra, consisting of over 50 collaborative musicians gathered together. This exciting, beautiful music highlighted the story of Christ s birth and the messengers of God in a unique and captivating way for the congregation and for those performing. The original music also included a few known advent carols and hymns for the congregation to join the choir in song. Conductor Bryon Black II shared afterwards, It was a true joy to bring together such a talented ensemble of musicians, colleagues, teachers, church staff, youth, college students, family and friends. Together, we provided an incredible musical performance as the messengers of Christ s good news. Our congregation was so blessed by this, and it s a day that I ll never forget. So glad I was able to do this with many of my favorite people! We truly hope that Shout the Good News! blessed all who heard it during our Christmas season! It was a joy and a delight for us as we gathered so many talented musicians together to spread the good news. Thanks to all who helped to bring the vision of this special service into fruition.
