4 Bible Trivia This month Peace will be hosting a trivia night on September 23 rd, and it made me think about the concept of trivia. The popularity of trivia and answering questions has always been around, but it didn t really come into prominence until about 100 years ago. The word trivia was not an official word in English until about The advent of television really brought the concept of trivia into the mainstream over the last 50 years. Shows like Jeopardy and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire are some of the most popular TV game shows in existence. As I was growing up, and trivia became more popular, games were introduced in the market for purchase. In 1984 the game Bible Trivia was introduced and was a big hit in the small town where I grew up. If you ve ever played this game then you know how difficult it can be. It s a difficult game because not many people read their Bible regularly. Some have never even read their Bible from cover to cover (Genesis through Revelation). Why is it that many Christians do not read their Bible regularly? In the LCMS we confess the Bible (or the Scriptures) to be, The words of eternal life, the living, inspired Word of God. When everything else in life fails, the Word of the Lord endures forever and provides the bedrock for our religious life. (Lutheranism 101) If this Word given to us by God is our bedrock, why do so many of us know so little about it and are unable to answer many trivia questions about the Bible? We should be more like the Psalmist who wrote, It is my mediation all the day. (Psalm 119:97) When we read and hear God s Word it strengthens our faith. Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17) Let us not forget to read our Bible daily, and over the course of time our sanctification will progress through the power of God s Word. Through His Word we become more like Him, the way God envisioned it when the world was first created and we were made in His image. Reading God s Word daily, and keeping it as a sign on your hand, and as, frontlets between your eyes, (Deuteronomy 6:8) is what He wants for us because of the Spirit s power that works through His Word. While trivia may have a connotation of being trivial, or not that important, God s Word is always important. There is never anything trivial about Bible trivia. It is all important because it is God s very Word. Through His Word we come to know Him and the love He has for all of us. It was this love that caused the Father to send His Son, the Word made flesh. In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf 4

6 LWML (Lutheran Women Missionary League) The topic for September 2017 Circle meetings is in the Summer Quarterly on page 22, entitled The Profound Search for Wisdom authored by Jan Brunette. She is a speaker and freelance writer who has been an active member in the LWML for over forty years. She currently attends Our Savior Lutheran Church in Rockwall, TX. We will be walking through the Bible in search for wisdom Why not join us for this trip!! Roll Call Word Wisdom Alpha Circle will meet Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the home of Ruth Oexman with Barbara Belach as her Co-Hostess. Topic will be led by Cindy McCubbin. Carol Head will check the Acolyte Robes for laundering or mending needs. For more information, please call the President of Alpha Circle, Wanda Thurnau at Lydia Circle will meet Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 1:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall Norma Derringer and Cathy Truelove will host the meeting. The Topic will be led by Darla Wolters. For more information, please call the President of Lydia Circle, Kathleen Jarvis at President Patti Engage, Encourage, Equip -- Enjoy has been her personal theme during her two-year presidency, because that is what she sees the LWML doing. Engage, and Equip Excerpts from Saturday Luncheon at the convention Nancy Cohen, Chairman of the Apple of His Eye Ministries shared her excitement to be the first RSO to host missionaries from the LCMS in Israel. She stressed that People there are hurting and need our unconditional love. As the Great Commission sends out workers into the world it is our Obligation to the Jews to tell them about Jesus. Lutheran World Relief Gloria Edwards and Linda Reiser, past LWML Presidents, serve on the Board of Directors, shared the following In 2016 the LWML shipped $13.3 million worth of quilts and kits throughout the world. The LWM helps out in all types of disasters and is there to lend a heling hand. Everyone is a Missionary Rev. Kevin Robson, LCMLS Chief Mission Officer described the mission work that has been going on here and abroad. He shared a video of the LCMS disaster response team in Perryville, MO. The team used the disaster response trailer provided by the LWML through a Mission Grant. Our Mighty Mites, those pennies and dimes reach people in need everywhere. Building Bridges Rev. Gregory Seltz, Lutheran Hour Speaker, encouraged everyone to Be ourselves in Christ for others and Be ourselves that we may bring Christ s message of salvation to our neighbors far and near. Are we strong enough to build bridges? Indian Ministries The Navajo Nation is one of the largest and most challenging mission fields in the United States. The majority of residents are Non-Christians. There are no native leaders such as Deacons or Pastors, explained Vicar Norton, who works there. Mistrust of the White Man s Religion, unique language barriers, poverty, hunger, abuse and generational trauma are all challenges to receiving the message of the Gospel. 6

7 The small town of Navajo, New Mexico, is on the largest Indian Reservation in the United States. Vicar Norton and his family plan to stay when he is ordained at the end of August at Shepperd of the Hills, Navajo, New Mexico. Were do we go from here? -- Asked Deaconess Betty Knapp at the start of Bible Study. She stated that from the very beginning, the word Missionary has been in our name Leaders left no doubt that the focus of the LWML was the word Missionary and not speeches, resolutions, or other aspects of faith and life. She highlighted seven women involved in Outreach, including Mary Banta, known as Chinatown s Angel of Mercy and Martha Boss, a medical missionary to China and Hong Kong. But as she stated, we are not all called to serve on foreign soil as missionaries. Yet our response to God s call is not less important. In fact, it is equally important. Because there are people whose lives intersect with ours, whose only experience with hearing the saving message of the Gospel may come through us. Computers, Computers -- What a blessing to those who could not attend the convention. They were able to view the proceedings online. There were 1,452 people including viewers from Bueno Aires, Argentina, Ontario Canada and people from 44 of 50 states. All together there were 2,710 viewers online participating in the convention. Attention Topic Leaders -- Topic leaders meet the first Tuesday of the month at 9:30 AM with Pastor Rolf. Board Meeting -- September 16 is the date, 6:30 PM is the time, Fellowship Hall is the Place Thank You and Thank You -- This Newsletter could not be finished before I extend a Huge Thank You to our congregation for their support in providing school supplies to our children at Grow in Peace. The overwhelming supply of needed items that filled the table located at the top of the stairs, was beyond all expectations. Wish we could share the smiles and happiness the children displayed upon receiving the new backpacks filled with school supplies was indescribable. You opened your heart and your pocketbook and love poured out and our children at Grow in Peace benefitted from that love. This project was sponsored by Alpha Circle and will continue to be the Helping Hand to the needs of our Grow in Peace Child Care. Each month a new list of items needed by the Child Care will appear on the poster. And once again, please help us to extend that helping hand to those needing the most. May God bless each of our wonderful Peace members for your love and caring for the least of these, our children. The unfailing love of the Lord never ends! 8 Book Club The Readers of Broken Wheel By Katarina Bivald A heartwarming reminder of why we are booklovers, this is a sweet, smart story about how books find us, change us, and connect us. Once you let a book into your life, the most unexpected things can happen... Broken Wheel, Iowa, has never seen anyone like Sara, who traveled all the way from Sweden just to meet her book-loving pen pal, Amy. When she arrives, however, she finds Amy's funeral guests just leaving. The residents of Broken Wheel are happy to look after their bewildered visitor there's not much else to do in a dying small town that's almost beyond repair. You certainly wouldn't open a bookstore. And definitely not with the tourist in charge. You'd need a vacant storefront (Main Street is full of them), books (Amy's house is full of them), and... customers. The bookstore might be a little quirky. Then again, so is Sara. But Broken Wheel's own story might be more eccentric and surprising than she thought. The Book Club will meet Wednesday, September 27 th at 9:30 am in the Social Hall. Everyone is welcome to join us for a discussion on this very interesting book. Altar Flowers There are Sundays available for you to acknowledge special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, or remembrances. 11 CLOSE THE DOOR TO HELP PROTECT THE CHURCH PROPERTY AND TO ENSURE OUR SAFETY; PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL OUTSIDE DOORS ARE COMPLETELY CLOSED ESPECIALLY DURING THE WEEK. Peace Mission Sunday Sunday, September 17th Vickie Kraft, President & Chief Executive Officer of Newhouse will be at Peace for Mission Sunday, September 17 th. Vickie will speak at both services and be available between services. We are working with Newhouse at this time to identify immediate needs. Since their needs change quickly we are waiting until closer to the time. We will have an in-gathering on Sunday, September 3 rd and September 10 th; then on September 17 th we will have envelopes available if you wish to make a cash donation. With 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence and a report of domestic violence being reported in Missouri every 16 minutes the Newhouse shelter is a much needed and used service. Newhouse service 900 per year. Please keep Newhouse and all who experience domestic violence in your prayers. Please also pray for the abusers. The church needs volunteers to help Usher on Sundays mornings. We are asking both ladies and gentlemen to help. 12 Mission Sunday September 17 th Do you wish you knew how to do something that a simple session might provide that how to? Some members have asked if we might have some workshops on various topics ranging from how to tie a beautiful bow for a package, to using excel, to baking bread, to hemming a pair of slacks, to changing oil in lawn mower, to making soap, raised bed gardening, making a blue bird house, etc., etc. A few years ago, we did one for the youth on table manners that was well received. Is there interest in these workshops? What topics would you be interested in attending (perhaps with a friend)? How often would you like these offered? When would you like these offered weekend, evening, etc.? Please share your thought with the Peace Council Members at Large - Kathleen Jarvis, Carol Malone, and/or Jan Rinne. Every 16 minutes in Missouri a domestic violence crime is reported. Thanks to organizations like Newhouse women and children have a place to go and receive support as they transition from a place of domestic violence. These women and children arrive with very little and often only what they are wearing. As part of the Peace Lutheran Mission Sunday we will be doing three things On Sept 3 rd collecting new bath towels 2. On Sept 10 th collecting cold & flu medications as well as acetaminophen and ibuprofen (all needed in adult and pediatric strength) On Sept 17 th taking a door offering for Newhouse On this date Vicki Kraft will be with us again this year to share information and answer questions. In addition, a group from Peace will be preparing and serving a meal in the near future for the residents of Newhouse. 12
