Schmid Church Secretary Debbie Baldwin Director of Grow in Peace Child Care Center Carla Hamilton Organist: Sylvia Ratcliffe Office Hours: Tuesday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. The Messenger of Peace Re is my favorite prefix. It means to go back or to do something again. Word examples of this include return, reacquire, redo and so forth. Of course, our Lord uses it to a much richer and fuller usage and meaning, Redeemer being the classic example. Deem means to judge or to come to a conclusion. The present conclusion is that we are sinners, deserving nothing but condemnation and everlasting death. But our Father of mercy, out of love, sent His Son so the judgment of sin would not be applied to those who have faith in His Son as Lord and Savior. In other words, every time our Redeemer forgives us, it is like we are returning back to the Garden of Eden before Adam and Eve sinned, before they were judged and cursed. Made holy again, made whole again, our sin remembered no more. Rejoice! In response to our Redeemer reconciling us and returning us to His grace, when we repeat our sins (and we will) we return back to Him by repenting to Him. And then we rejoice in His forgiveness, renewing our vow to obey His commands to the renewal of our daily lives and the lives of those we touch with His acts of redemption. We do this as individual disciples but also as the one body of Christ at 82 nd and Blue Ridge. The new pastor brings with him the opportunity for Peace to be reinvigorated with the renewal that change by the will of God can bring. Let us reload our Sword of the Spirit by hearing and living His Word and by receiving His power through Holy Communion where we are renewed by His very body and blood. In response to all this, as Paul writes in Philippians, may we rejoice in the Lord always, I say it again, rejoice! In the Redeemer s name, may it be so. Amen. In Christ Pastor Zerkel

Ruth Oexman Ice Maker Book Club Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at seventeen. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she has settled for permanent disappointment but seeks momentary escape through an obsessive flirtation with a younger man. As she hikes up a mountain road behind her house to a secret tryst, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media. The bewildering emergency draws rural farmers into unexpected acquaintance with urbane journalists, opportunists, sightseers, and a striking biologist with his own stake in the outcome. As the community lines up to judge the woman and her miracle, Dellarobia confronts her family, her church, her town, and a larger world, in a flight toward truth that could undo all she has ever believed. The Book Club will meet on Wednesday, June 23 at 9:30 am in the Social Room The Messenger of Peace Grow in Peace Child Care June, director@gipchildcare.com main ( )2 nd line **Please be sure and program our phone number into your cell phone. 5 Lutheran Hour Pamphlet Ministry PORNOGRAPHY! That s an attention getting word in a Peace newsletter, isn t it?! Were you aware that the porn industry is a 97 billion dollar enterprise, with a 2006 estimate of $13 billion spent here in the United States. Just think those are 8-year old statistics. How big has it grown by the time you re reading this? The painful topic of pornography is discussed in a pamphlet available on the Lutheran Hour Pamphlet Ministry in Peace s entry. Look for the pamphlet entitled Strength and Honor The Spiritual Warfare Against Pornography written by Rev. Dr. Steve Hokana, an active duty US Army chaplain and an active member of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Below is the synopsis of this pamphlet: Pornography, sadly, is a word all too familiar these days. To say porn has crept into our households would be an understatement; its advance has been more like a march, leaving a host of casualties in its wake: individuals, marriages, families, relationships, careers, sometimes even one s faith go down the drain as this take-no-prisoner scourge derails Christian and non-christian alike. In this booklet the reader will find insights and hope for dealing with the problems brought on by pornography. The words offered here are Christ-centered, to the point, and deliver a Christian approach to battling this pernicious* vice. It s overriding aim is to help individuals defeat pornographic addiction in their lives, and with the power of God s grace it can be done. As the author writes, It is in His Name we conquer strongholds, including those built around the deception and slavery of pornography. Miscellaneous Continued from page 3 News Tidbits - Hallelujah, Praise the Lord.
