3 Thank the Lord! November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. This tradition has a long history with different stories describing its origin. While we may never know where or when the original tradition began, we do have enough evidence to show us that it was Christians who took this time to give thanks to God and to offer up prayers for all He has done for us. George Washington declared Thanksgiving in 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God." God has richly blessed us in America with an abundance unlike any other nation that has ever existed on this earth. So why is it that we always seem to want more? No matter how much we have, it is never enough. Whatever our income is, we wish it could be just a little more. Our home is nice, but wouldn t it be better if it was just a bit bigger. Or perhaps you purchased a bigger home, and it s too much to take care of, so now you just want a smaller one. No matter what you have, you are always looking for the next bigger or better thing. It seems like the grass is always greener on the other side and our desires seem to have no end. Stop for a moment and take a good hard look at the grass you re currently standing on. It s good! You have all the provisions you need. You have food on the table. You have a roof over your head. You have clothes to wear. You have a government that still allows you to worship the Triune God and they don t penalize you for it. God has richly blessed you and the majority of the people that live in this country. If there was ever a time to stop and say, Thank you! to God, now is it. We don t need to wait until Thanksgiving Day every year. We should be thanking and praising God each and every day of our lives. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) Acknowledging God and His goodness is what He expects from us each and every day. In the service of Christ, Pastor Rolf 3

Please bring a $5.00 gift if you wish to participate in the gift exchange Give thanks to the Lord (psalm 107:1) With Thanksgiving just around the corner. We take time, as families, to gather around the Thanksgiving table recalling all the goodness, grace and gifts with which God has enriched our lives and thanking Him for it. In our prayers we remember those millions suffering as terror stalks their lives. Our own nation has experienced heat, drought, floods and hurricanes. As Women on a Mission we are actively serving the Lord through serving others, with our mites, quilts, food, and clothing to mention just a few areas of service. Through Bible Study in our Circles our relationship to Christ grows and influences all our relationships. Life becomes a daily thanksgiving for God s grace and mercy, while our activities are a year-long thank offering. November highlights what we have been doing all year Bringing our thanks offering and celebrating our thanksgiving to a gracious God. His light on our daily walk reveals the many blessings we enjoy. Oh God of Grace, Bless our Homes and our Nation, as we partake of your bounty. Give thanks to the Lord, because He is good; His love is eternal! Blessed Thanksgiving to one and all! 6 Book Club The Summer Before the War By Helen Simonson East Sussex, It is the end of England s brief Edwardian summer, and everyone agrees that the weather has never been so beautiful. Hugh Grange, down from his medical studies, is visiting his Aunt Agatha, who lives with her husband in the small, idyllic coastal town of Rye. Agatha s husband works in the Foreign Office, and she is certain he will ensure that the recent saber rattling over the Balkans won t come to anything. And Agatha has more immediate concerns; she has just risked her carefully built reputation by pushing for the appointment of a woman to replace the Latin master. When Beatrice Nash arrives with one trunk and several large crates of books, it is clear she is significantly more freethinking and attractive than anyone believes a Latin teacher should be. For her part, mourning the death of her beloved father, who has left her penniless, Beatrice simply wants to be left alone to pursue her teaching and writing. But just as Beatrice comes alive to the beauty of the Sussex landscape and the colorful characters who populate Rye, the perfect summer is about to end. For despite Agatha s reassurances, the unimaginable is coming. Soon the limits of progress, and the old ways, will be tested as this small Sussex town and its inhabitants go to war. The Book Club will meet Wednesday, November 23 rd in the Fellowship Hall. A Cookie Mini Sale Be sure to bring dollar bills on Sunday, Nov. 6 th. A dollar will buy three home baked cookies to help purchase new cots for Grow in Peace. The cots cost $40 each. This small fundraiser, a service project, qualifies for a Thrivent grant of $250. Your cookie purchases plus the grant will help Grow in Peace immensely. Look for the cookies in the Entry Way between services. 6

Keith and Joan Loesch This specially planned 10-day tour features a Cruise on the Rhine River beginning at Amsterdam, Holland, continuing into Germany to Cologne and Coblenz, Speyer and Heidelberg, then through the picturesque grand Castle region of the Rhine Gorge as far as Mainz, where Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press, and Worms, where Dr. Martin Luther made his Here I Stand speech before the Emperor.
