History At 5am on 11 November 1918, three German government representatives accepted the Armistice terms presented to them by an allied commander, General Foch of the French Army. The demands of the Armistice included the withdrawal of German forces to the east bank of the Rhine within 30 days; immediate cessation of warfare; and surrender of the German fleet and all heavy guns with no further negotiations until the signing of the peace treaty. The armistice became effective at 11am the same day, and as the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium, four years of hostilities ended. The cease-fire was made permanent the following year when members of the Commonwealth and the League of Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, people across the world celebrated the war's end - celebrations tempered by thoughts of the enormous suffering and loss of life resulting from the War. World War I began in 1914 and lasted for four years. More than 416,000 Australians volunteered for service in World War I. Of these, 324,000 served overseas. More than 60,000 Australians were killed, including 45,000 who died on the Western Front in France and Belgium and more than 8,000 who died on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. After the end of the Second World War, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day. Armistice Day was no longer an appropriate title for a day, which would commemorate all war dead. In October 1997 the then Governor-General issued a Proclamation declaring 11th November as Remembrance Day - a day to remember the sacrifice of those who have died for Australia in wars and conflicts. The Proclamation reinforced the importance of Remembrance Day and encouraged all Australians to renew their observance of the event. As a school community we will stop for a minute at 11.00am on Monday 11 th November.
2 SCHOOL BUSH DANCE Tomorrow, starting at 7.00pm all families are invited to come along and join us in a night of fun and dancing. We will be entertained by the Blackberry Jam Bush Band. This will be a great fun night for the whole family. Tickets cost $10 a family. Bring a basket of goodies to enjoy on the night whilst joining in all the bush dancing! PLEASE FIND A BOOKING SLIP AT THE END OF THIS NEWSLETTER MOVEMBER Each year Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men s faces in Australia and around the world, with the sole aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men. There is an increasing momentum of men s health awareness in Australia; but as a general rule, men remain unhealthier than woman. The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that men have an average life expectancy of 78, compared to 83 for a woman. Men sporting Movember moustaches, known as Mo Bros, become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men s health. Mr. Chris Anderson (Prep classroom teacher) is growing a moustache to support the issues of men s health. If you would like to support the Movember cause and assist in raising funds please send your donation to the office. 5 PARISH NEWS Early Sign Up This year we will have the annual sign-up for all Parish Ministries during Advent instead of the usual time of February. This change is to ensure that the new rosters begin as from the first week of February. This week there is an insert in the bulletin with a description of each of our Ministries. This will be repeated in the November Big Bulletin. Parishioners are requested to prayerfully consider making a commitment to at least one Ministry. When you have reached a decision as to which Ministry you will commit to, please fill out the attached form and return to the Parish Office or Welcome Desk. Lourdes Water After reaching Santiago de Compostela in October Fr Noel continued his pilgrimage to Lourdes. He has brought back some holy water from Lourdes. If any parishioner would like to have a small quantity of Lourdes water please contact him. Advent This year Advent begins on Sunday 1 December. We move from cycle C Readings (Luke) to cycle A (Matthew). By way of preparation it would be a good idea to begin reading Matthew s Gospel. Parish Party This is an invitation to all parishioners who are in a Parish Group or a Parish Ministry or who help in any way during the year to come to our annual get-together. It is on Wednesday 4 December commencing at 7pm. You are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share. Working Bee The last working bee for this year is on Saturday 30 November. Even the casual observer would notice all the weeds, dead bushes, and untidy hedges that abound. Please make every effort to come. You will make a difference. Candle Money Some people (mainly children) have been stealing the candle money from the Blessed Sacrament and Marian chapels. The seventh Commandment is You shall not steal. Let this stealing stop. A gold coin donation for EACH candle is expected. Christ the King The feast of Christ the King is on Sunday 24 November; it is the last Sunday of Ordinary Time. It is also the Sunday when the parish celebrates our Samoan heritage. The 10.30am Mass will have a distinctive Samoan flavor; Samoan choir, Samoan environment, Samoan culture. Parishioners who trace their heritage back to Samoa invite all Resurrection parishioners to share in this experience. Part Time Position Resurrection Parish is looking for someone experienced in office administration to work on Sunday mornings between 8.30am and 12.30pm. The position is for a highly motivated person who can work with minimum supervision, has strong organisational and time management skills. Good working knowledge of MS Office programmes of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher is required. For a detailed job description please contact Fr Noel.
