Many of us have probably set some sort of goal concerning a new activity. It might be to learn to paint, or take dance lessons with your spouse or maybe it is to learn to play a musical instrument. Others will make this year a time to develop an already enjoyed activity. The New Year is always a time to discover a new interest or develop an already enjoyed interest. Spiritually, the New Year is a reminder that we need to continue to grow in our faith, commitment and service to Christ. In the book of Acts Chapter 19, Paul discovers a group of disciples who had not yet heard of the Holy Spirit. When Paul asked them if they had received the Holy Spirit they simply reply, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. These disciples were followers of John and had been baptized in John s baptism as a sign of their repentance of sin. Yet, they were seeking to serve God with just partial knowledge of God s revelation in Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul shares with them the news of Jesus and power of the Holy Spirit and they are baptized in the name of Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit in their lives. These disciples, like us, were doing all they could with the knowledge they possessed, until they had the opportunity to grow and mature in their faith. As we begin a New Year, we all have new opportunities for spiritual growth and maturity. At Trinity we state in our Core Values that we believe in life long learning for the Christian. So, I want to challenge you this year to grow and mature in your faith. Grow in your reading and understanding of the Bible. Find a Sunday School class where you can grow in Bible knowledge. Join us on Wednesday nights in the Chapel at 6:15 p.m. for the Pastor s Bible Study. Consider joining a TNT small group or find your place in one of our Women s Bible Studies this winter and spring. There are so many ways for you to grow and mature in your faith right here in the weekly ministry of Trinity. I hope you will take advantage of one or more of these opportunities and make 2015 a year of spiritual growth and maturity.

3 Deacon of the Week Boyd Dimmock has been a member of Trinity since 1974 and is a native of New Bern, NC. She and her husband, Tom, have two children: Julie Anna and Laurie; and three grandchildren: Micah, Annalise and Vivian. Boyd is retired from IBM. She serves as 10th grade SS Teacher, Chair of the Nominating Committee and sings in the Adult Choir. She works with the Dimmock SS Class. She also works with deacons Fran Holland and Joe Ward. 6 Rev. Steve Byers, Music Notes Special thanks to Maury Tepper for sharing his talent with us in worship this past Sunday morning. As we start our new year of music ministry at Trinity, we look forward to hearing from our musicians as they share in worship. Our choirs will begin this coming week making their preparations for worship leading. Sanctuary Choir Retreat This Weekend, January 9-10 Sign-ups for this weekend will be available at rehearsal this coming Wednesday night for you. Our Easter cantata will be presented on March 29, which is only a little over 2 months away! This is an important time to rehearse and get a head start on the music, as well as spending time fellowshipping together. Maybe there are those who wish to join our Sanctuary Choir and need a time to begin but haven t made the commitment yet. Did you know that there are almost 3,000 homeless youth in Wake County alone? That number is up 53% from just 5 years ago. These are people that you go to school with - faces you see every day. On Monday, January 19, while you are enjoying a day out of school, we will be meeting here at church for a day of service. We will be partnering with Haven House, a ministry to homeless youth here in Raleigh. Meet in the Fellowship Hall to spend a day serving our brothers and sisters.

8 Rev. Karen Metcalf Eickhoff, The New Year Read these words penned by my father and discover a fresh perspective for 2015: The New Year converges upon us with the powerful impact of time. The old year has squeezed through the cracks of many passing events we thought would last forever. Days gone by rapidly fold into the pages of the past, while the days ahead are pages clean for the writing. Time is always in forward motion. Although we would like to go back and re-live some moments and re-do some deeds, we cannot. We are left with a set of memories which serves us with a combination of both satisfaction and sorrow. Perhaps our most wholesome understanding of the present is that we are in the process of making more memories. Whatever we do today greatly affects our perspective on things tomorrow. The opinion we will have of ourselves and others tomorrow is affected largely by what happens today. We cannot always control the things that happen to us. Life is not nearly as predictable as we often assume. We make our plans, we set our course and then the strong winds of circumstance steer us in many directions. Adjustments have to be made. It takes a lot of flexibility to deal with father time. Only those who understand and accept the dynamics of change can be happy. Those who carve out their ruts of despair and get locked into only one of life s many channels will never know peace. Some will never sing because they have not allowed themselves to find life s melody. We cannot wait until life is entirely to our liking before we express our music. People, who lose their zest for life by whining and complaining about the passing of time, are to be pitied. God calls us forward in faith to face a future that will yield its problems and its solutions, its sorrow and joy, its pain and its peace, its hate and its love, its sin and its forgiveness as well as a healthy combination of fear and courage. We must be still and know that He is God, lest our urge to go everywhere and do everything affects our ability to worship and pray. In our hurry to get on with life, we may rob it of its most tender moments and its sacred purpose. We cannot stop the coming of the New Year, but we can stop fretting about the past. We can allow the Lord of all life to be the Lord of our lives and the Lord of the New Year. CSM May the Lord of Life be the Lord of your life this year! Practices are conducted either on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday evenings on the same day and at the same time each week. All practices will last one hour consisting of a 15 minute devotion and a 45 minute on-court practice. All games and practices are held in the Recreational Outreach Center on the Trinity Baptist Church Campus. Practices Dates for 2014/2015 Season Please plan to attend practice each week.
