1 Volume 28 Number 15 April 14, Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC tel: fax: Joining Hands with God Dr. Jeff Roberts, Senior Pastor Roberts When I arrived as pastor in 2000, our first Pastoral Advisory Council began discussion of the establishing of a Sabbatical Policy for the Sr. Pastor and Ministerial Staff. In 2008, we established a Sabbatical Policy, which allows for the ministerial staff to request a sabbatical for renewal and learning to enrich the minister and congregation. The policy allows for ministers to apply for a sabbatical leave every 7 years. Since the inception of our plan, two of our ministers have enjoyed a time of rest and renewal through the plan. This coming summer, I will be taking my first sabbatical after 25 years of serving as a pastor. Many of you have already told me it is long over due and I am thankful for your grace and encouragement. The Pastoral Advisory Council and Personnel Committee have reviewed my request and authorized my plan for sabbatical from June 22 August 7, The plan includes both time of rest, writing and also an experience of learning. The centerpiece of my sabbatical will be spent in Durban, South Africa at the Baptist World Congress. It has long been my hope that I might be able to join other Baptists from around the world in this time of connection, ministry and celebration. I am looking forward to my time at the conference. In conjunction with this experience, I will be connecting with other CBF churches and missionaries during a mission lab prior to the conference. The Sabbatical Leave is a common practice among many churches today. It is my opinion that a Sabbatical Leave is not only beneficial to the minister, but also to the congregation. This is especially true in our Baptist churches that believe strongly that every member is a minister. The time away cannot only help the minister rediscover his or her identity in Christ outside the congregational duties and job designation, but the church can again be reminded that the church and the pastor are not the same entity. I think this is especially important in a time when the culture of the church in America is driven by strong pastoral personalities. It is important time to let others who are called to vocational ministry experience opportunities that are many times left to the Sr. Pastor. The members of our staff will grow in responsibility and confidence during this time. Of course for the Sr. Pastor it is an important time for prayer, reflection, renewal, learning and discerning God s call and leadership for the future. For all of these reasons, I am encouraged and grateful that our congregation has provided this opportunity for our staff and me. As part of my preparation, I will be making a ministry plan for not only the preaching duties, but for pastoral care duties and staff supervision. In regards to the preaching duties the Deacons have already approved the securing of Dr. Clay Warf as the supply preacher during my sabbatical. Clay and his wife Sherry are continued

Following Jesus... continued members here at Trinity and many of us have enjoyed Clay s teaching and service since their arrival with us. Dr. Warf is the President of the North Carolina Baptist Foundation and prior to this position was the Sr. Pastor at Temple Baptist in Durham and First Baptist Church in Roxboro, N.C. When Clay is not with us singing in the choir and leading discipleship, he can be found as a popular supply preacher in pulpits around our state. We are thankful that Dr. Warf has accepted this responsibility as he brings several similar experiences with other congregations and pastors. I will continue to update you as we prepare for this experience this summer. This coming Sunday we continue our look at the resurrection stories and the encounters with the risen Christ. 3 Deacon of the Week Joe Ward has been a member of Trinity since 1992 and is a native of Illinois. He and his wife, Melanie have two children, Kimberly and Samuel. Joe is an Infrastructure Manager with Schneider Electric. He serves in the Sanctuary Choir, First Light, WIHN, KY Missions Team, Bells of Praise, Office Automation Committee, and Missions Steering Committee. Joe works with the Peterson/ Spilman (Adult 4 Coed 6) SS Class. He also works with deacon Sam Spilman. Discipleship Academy Our two Academies have been awesome and I want to express deep gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Clay Warf for leading us so faithfully through an overview of the Old and New Testament on Sunday evenings this year. Hal Melton, Nursing Homes & Homebound Visits Restarts Wednesday, April 15 10:00am Fellowship Hall Shredding Event Saturday, April 18 9:00am-1:00pm This will be the third year that the SAC has sponsored a spring-time shredding event, just in time to take care of those tax season documents you no longer need. This is an outreach event open to the public. Each household may bring up to 5 paper boxes of paper. Don t worry about removing staples or paper clips. You may even bring bound books for shredding! Home Health Care Program Tuesday, April 21 2:00 pm A214 or Thursday, April 23 6:00 pm A214 Home Health Care is provided in homes and inside assisted living facilities. Come to the third event in our Senior Living Options series and find out more. Trinity s Mark Moore owns one such agency and will talk about Home Health Care, when to take that step, what it will cost and what you should look for when considering a Home Health Care provider. Hawaii Cruise Interest Meeting Tuesday, April 28 7:00pm Multipurpose Room This is a meeting to determine interest in this cruise. Lunch at Angie s and then enjoy The Dixie Swim Club performed by the Garner Towne Players Saturday, April 25 11:00am Cost: Lunch on your own, Tickets $12 made out to TBC First we ll head to Garner for lunch at Angie s. After lunch we ll head over to the Garner Performing Arts Center for a performance of The Dixie Swim Club in which five southern women set aside a long weekend every August to recharge their relationships. They meet at the same beach cottage on the Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other s lives. The play focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years -- a hilarious and touching comedy about friendships that last forever. This is general admission no reservations, so we ll arrive early to get the best seats. Senior Adult/Baptist Heritage Day Sunday, May 3 Each year on the first Sunday in May, we celebrate Baptist life and honor and celebrate our own Senior Adults. Some of them will help Dr. Roberts lead in worship on that morning. After the 11 o clock service, seniors enjoy a luncheon in their honor. There is No Charge, but you must sign up at the B-Hallway bulletin Board by April 26. Guest speaker for the luncheon will be Chip Coffey, son of Dr. Jack Coffey, a former interim pastor. Chip is in the U.S. Secret Service and among other responsibilities has served on the President s Protective Detail for both Republican and Democratic presidents. He has many stories and insights to share with us.

The speakers are awesome including Dr. Kevin Leman whose materials we have used on marriage retreats in the past. Conference fee is only $99. Please pack items in kitchen trash bags. The collection bin is in the hall in the B building, main floor. Home Build Mission April 16, 17 & 18: We will need 20 volunteers. (This is an OIAM Project.) Wake County Missions Blitz Saturday, April 18 Thanks for Volunteering for this event. If you haven t heard from your Project Team Leader please call him/her and get final instructions for your project. Call the church office if you don t know who that person is. For those who signed up, a hot country breakfast will be served in the Fellowship Hall Saturday morning at 8am. We ll share a time of devotion and prayer, then head out to our 19 mission projects.

6 Rev. Steve Byers, Special thanks to Karen Trachtman for her beautiful solo in both morning worship services, and our Music Makers and Young Musicians Choirs for leading in worship this past Sunday. Our children s choirs have been working each week to prepare for worship services, but also for their spring concert on May 17 at 6 pm in the Sanctuary. Parents will want to mark that date on their calendars! There are only a few more weeks left of choir, so don t forget to come each week and continue learning! Children s Choirs Parents It is important that your students attend choirs on Wednesday evenings for concert preparations. If you will not be attending on May 17, please notify your choir director. It is very important we know how many to count on for the final concert. Karen Metcalf Eickhoff, Why Grown Children Leave the Church There is an epidemic in this generation of young adults who attended church when they were children and young teens only to leave as soon as they become of age. What are we as a church doing to get these students to leave? While there are many answers to this question, here are five things your church can do to get children to leave as soon as they grow up. Play a lot of games in children s church. Games aren t wrong, but when a ministry mostly focuses on games and the wow factor, children will grow up expecting to be entertained. When they start attending adult church, they will become disappointed and leave. Teach children to be good. It doesn t sound right, but teaching children to be good can cause them to walk away from the church. There is nothing wrong with being good, but we should be teaching children to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Being good isn t good enough. We need to teach our children to be godly. Teach watered-down Bible stories. Bible stories are important. So is every other part of the Bible. But if we only teach watereddown Bible stories and concepts, instead of teaching children the entire Word of God in a way they can understand, we inoculate them to the Gospel. We give them just enough to feel good about themselves, not enough to get them saved. Unfortunately many Christian Education publishers are doing that to make sure their curriculum is accepted by all denominations. Children can learn doctrine if we teach it in a way they can understand. Don t let children have a part in ministry. Teach them that their only role is to come to church and listen, maybe play a few games, and you ll assure them that they re not an important part of the church. Children can be taught to minister and participate in worship. If you never let children or even teens in some cases be a part of the congregation, they will grow up in the church but not being a part of the church. They ll have little or no connection with the older members and will leave when they re no longer a part of the youth or children s ministry. They ll be out of their comfort zone. One way to stop this from happening is to make sure children are included in intergenerational church worship services and to make a place for them at church events. Let s be proactive and include our children and teach them well.

9 Rev. Carla Babb, Words from Carla Did you know that God designed us to depend on Him moment by moment? When we get caught up in our own tasks and desires, we may become driven to what we determine success is in our own eyes. When this happens, we lose our focus of what God is trying to do through and with us. Maybe we think our plan is better and of course it must work, because we have tried it and we have confidence in it being successful. The moment we take our eyes off of God and switch to our own thoughts, we have pulled away from God s desire for us. God would not cause us to change our thinking or place new opportunities before us or would he? Yes, He would and yes, He can. Maybe you have done things your way and there is no Parent-Child Dedication Sunday, May 10 8:45am & 10:55am Services reason to change because it has brought you attention and success in man s eyes. Can you honestly say that pride never got in the way of what you may be doing? Have you given your all to the one who designed you? Do you go to Him daily in prayer asking for guidance, discernment, and wisdom in each decision (no matter how small) you make? It is hard because we get caught up in doing our routine, but I invite you to take time and pray to God before you jump to a decision. What is it He wants you to do? Sometimes He places us in moments where we feel alone, but in that quiet moment, be thankful, for you have stopped and listened for His soft voice calling you. Walk trustingly with Him through the routines of your day. God s plan is perfect and do not be afraid to stand firmly on His words of promise. He is faithful! You see, God designed us to depend on Him and recognize that without Him we can do nothing! Have a great week! I am the vine; you are the branches.
