He is risen indeed, is the traditional greeting on Easter morning by Christians who gather for worship on this most holy of days. As much as this greeting makes Easter a special day of worship, it is somewhat sad that we do not greet each other every Sunday with this proclamation. The early church chose to gather on Sunday for worship to remember Jesus resurrection on a weekly basis. In this way, every Sunday is resurrection day. This speaks to the importance of the resurrection in the Christian faith. It is the resurrection of Jesus that changes everything in our world. It changes our view of the past, present and future. It changes our past because a resurrected Jesus speaks to a transformed past. How things once were are no more. Death, Sin and the Grave, the certainties of the living loose their power over the person who has placed their faith in the resurrected Jesus. We discover that the way things use to be, or the way we thought life had to be is transformed in the resurrection. Our present is transformed in the resurrection of Jesus. N.T. Wright reminds us in Surprised by Hope: The point of the resurrection is that the present bodily life is not valueless just because it will die What you do with your body in the present matters because God has a great future in store for it What you do in the present by painting, preaching, singing, sewing, praying, teaching, building hospitals, digging wells, campaigning for justice, writing poems, caring for the needy, loving your neighbor as yourself will last into God s future. These activities are not simply ways of making the present life a little less beastly, a little more bearable, until the day when we leave it behind altogether (as the hymn so mistakenly puts it ). They are part of what we may call building for God s kingdom. The resurrection of Jesus changes how we consider our lives in this present moment. The resurrection changes our view of the future. Because Jesus has been raised we too have the hope of resurrection. The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:16-19: For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. continued

Following Jesus... continued These past weeks we have been considering some basic affirmations of our faith. We affirm that God is, God created all things, God is Love and Jesus is God. This week I want you to consider what makes the Christian faith an astounding proclamation and that is the resurrection of Jesus. Timothy Keller writes in the Reason of Faith in an Age of Skepticism: If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn t rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead. We serve a living Christ. This changes our past, present and future. 3 Deacon of the Week Frank Evans has been a member of Trinity since 1993 and is a native of Edenton. He and his wife, Loretta, have two children: Jeffrey and Melanie and five grandchildren: Jade, Carey, Victoria, Maggie and Nathan. Frank is a retired Civil Engineer Tech with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA. He serves as ROC Volunteer and Baptist Men Fellowship Coordinator. He serves on the Kitchen Committee, Music Committee, Living Praise Ensemble, and Facility Master Planning Committee. Frank works with Adult 2 Coed 1 SS Class. You will be laughing, singing, and clapping along as one thing after another goes awry and they reveal their true and hilariously imperfect natures. Hal Melton, Food Drive Sunday, February 23 Every week, a list of needed Food Pantry items for North Raleigh Ministries is published in the Trinity Times newsletter and the Sunday School sheets. On Sunday, February 23 we are going all out to more than fill the pantry in one day! The Young Adult Sunday School Class has agreed to collect the food items in all major lobbies of the church that morning. They will also deliver the food to NRM for us NC Missions Conference March Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC Highlights include keynote speakers Anne Graham Lotz, David Platt, Bryan Loritts, and Leonard Sweet. Contemporary Christian music artist, Christy Nockels will lead worship for this year. Other highlights include testimonies, breakout sessions, mission fair exhibits and much more. McCreary Co., KY Summer Mission Opportunities Construction & Vacation Bible School July We will continue our Rural Poverty Initiative mission in one of the poorest counties in the US this summer. One team will work on substandard housing through Hills and Hollers Ministries as we have done for many years. The other team will plan and lead a Vacation Bible School for children in need physically and spiritually at the Eagle Community Center. Cost of these week-long missions is $275 including transportation, lodging, meals and T-shirt. Cost of building materials and VBS supplies is covered by our TBC Missions Budget. If you are interested in participating on either of these teams, please sign-up on the Narthex Registration Board. Planning will begin soon, so don t wait!

6 Rev. Steve Byers, Music Notes Our Children s Choirs, musicians, and worship leaders did an outstanding job this past Sunday leading us musically in worship. We are so proud of you for your work throughout the year, and a special thank you to the directors and leaders who commit so much time helping our children grow spiritually and musically! Middle School Choir Trip Charlotte Area May Look for details about the trip coming soon. Parents and students, please mark your calendars and make sure you are attending choir rehearsals if you are expecting to go with us. Rehearsals are important for our worship leadership. An Extended Invitation for Help. Videographers Needed Do you have interests or gifts in videography? We are in great need of more people to join our Video Team. Each Sunday, a small team of folks provide this fantastic opportunity for people outside of the church to watch our worship service through Internet streaming via our church website. Without these people, we may not reach others who cannot come to worship or those who are watching our church to find out more about it. If you have gifts that can be utilized or interests in training for something new, please consider this important ministry of our church. Call me for more details. We welcome your involvement! Lydia Tatum, Words from Lydia In middle school missions on Sunday nights, we have been learning about home missions and missions on every continent on earth (except Antarctica). Our students have had the opportunity to learn about different cultures, to discover some of the very different ways to use their gifts in service to God, and to study our scriptural calling to be followers on mission for Christ. Within the student ministry here at Trinity, our students have opportunities to serve in hands on missions throughout the year; and if you take a look at our announcements just on this page this week, you will see some of our many upcoming opportunities to serve. Hopefully, the message we are sending is that Christian missions is important. But, is that the message you send at home? Be encouraged to think through a family mission statement together. What would you include? Would family missions make the cut? The number one influence in a student s life is not his or her peers, youth group, or HS Spring Break Mission Trip Brunswick & St. Simon Island, GA March 30 - April 5 Cost: $250 If you have not turned in your registration for Spring Break Mission Trip, please turn them in as soon as possible! HS Nashville Summer Mission Trip July 11-19, 2014 Cost: $350 ($200 deposit due at registration) We will partner with ministries like Nashville Rescue Mission, Franktown Ministries, Show Hope, Second Harvest Food Bank and Tenn. Baptist Children s Home to help build up God s kingdom! We will also have time to tour Ryman Theater, Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry and more! If your child sees a missional lifestyle modeled at home, then it is more likely that he or she will grow a heart for serving God and His people. As you think about how your family can be more involved with missions, remember that you do not have to reinvent the wheel! Think about ministries where you can plug right in and serve ministries like those with whom we serve here at Trinity (North Raleigh Ministries, Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network, Love Wins Ministries, and the list could go on). God has uniquely gifted each one of us to serve His kingdom. Let s use our gifts to serve our Great God! MS Passport Summer Mission Camp July 7-12 Danville, Virginia Cost: $255 (Deposit $100) We still have spots open for MS students this summer. Be sure to turn in your registration as soon as possible to reserve your spot. MS Spring Missions Retreat Camp Caraway March 7-9 Cost: $30 MS students will travel to Camp Caraway to help prepare the grounds for the upcoming summer camp season. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in a significant way. Registration deadline is February 23. 8 Rev. Karen Metcalf Eickhoff, Children s Day Now Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 This Sunday our children stepped up to share their faith by reading, speaking or singing their love and devotion to God. AMAZING. Thank you children for inspiring me to desire to work harder for our Lord. Thank you choir members for singing and glorifying the Lord with your voices thank you 5th graders for and speaking out and leading in worship thank you for ushering and greeting those who come to worship. You are learning to be faithful! I also want to thank a wonderful lead team that includes Dorthy Drew, Mable Christian, Patra Payseur, and Bruce Eickhoff. I am reminded how blessed we are at Trinity to share and live our faith with ourchildren. A faith that needs to be experienced at home, lived out daily, and inspired through a community of believers. Thank you Trinity for being an incredible community in which to share Faith.even to the least of these. And Parents---do not forget, You are #1 and #2 when asked by teenagers to rate their top spiritual influence. We, as church, will promise to help. But claim the responsibility and begin today sharing and teaching your child about God. Passportkids Summer Camp For children in current grades 3-5 June 30 - July 3 Converse College, Spartanburg, SC Cost: $ Deposit of $100 Sign-up is extended for a little longer. Join a Lead Team Lead teams take the responsibility for an event or project in ministry and organize, promote and implement the specific event chosen. Lead Teams involve parents, teachers, other adults and children in the children s ministry. They require involvement and effort for the short term. Contact Karen or Carla and join a team and get involved with our Children s Ministry. Our Lead Teams are: VBS, Preschool Easter Event, Grade School Easter Event and Children s Day.

9 Carla Babb, Words from Carla A Christian parent s most important job is to build a solid spiritual foundation for their child. It begins at birth! The trust your baby has for you forms the basis of future relationships including a relationship with God. So be intentional in your child s spiritual development. Be a living example to them! Talk with them about God and Jesus. Children love to sing and for you to sing with them; (they do not care if you have a great singing voice) so share music with them. This is a wonderful way to teach about God. Read the Bible to and with them AND let them see you reading your Bible. Let them touch it, turn pages, and tell them the Bible is a special book. Pray OFTEN! Sometimes we use prayer the most in circumstances when we need or want something and forget to look around and thank God for the beautiful flowers, trees, sunrises, sunsets, and the gift of each new day. Be thankful, praise God daily, and pray without ceasing! When our children see our daily dependence on God and our love and thankfulness for His comfort, peace, and creation, they will learn to be thankful as well. Make church a priority in your family s life. It is not too late to start! Calling all Dads and Moms: I encourage you to take some time and sit down with your child. Play with them and let them show you how they play. Dads, you may have to join in with your daughter s tea party, rock a baby doll, dress up, and so on. Moms, you may have to dig in the dirt, play with Legos, drive trains, cars, etc. Whatever your child shows interest in, encourage them to let you participate in their activities. Make memories and build their self- esteem and confidence by showing your interest in who they are and what they do! Time goes by fast, so ENJOY each moment! Raising a child is a monumental task that requires a great deal of work, but be encouraged that you are not alone in this journey! The Lord is there before you start the day and He is there when the day is over!
